The receiver overseeing the Oak Bay Beach Hotel has offered the first look at the hotel’s financial picture.

The hotel is on an upswing financially since receiver Ernst and Young, appointed by B.C. Supreme Court, took over opera-tions at 1175 Beach Dr. late last year, said the March 26 report.

Following its appointment, the receiver terminated employment of five members of the management team, including Kevin Walker, his wife, Shawna, and their daugh-ter Kate.

Icon Services Ltd. has been working since Dec. 8 on a month-to-month term to man-age the hotel. The company receives a base management fee of 3 per cent of the gross operations revenue with a monthly mini-mum of $30,000 for the first two months, and $20,000 per month thereafter, lower than the 5 per cent management agreement between Bison Properties (OBBH) and Walker Hotel Management.

The hotel went into receivership this win-ter owing $125 million. As of the report’s writing, the receivers have distributed $612,000 to construction lenders, a group of three organizations owed $60.5 million.

“In order for any creditor subordinate to

the Construction Lenders to receive any recovery, the sale of the debtor’s prop-erty must generate transaction proceeds in excess of $70 million,” according to the report.

The District of Oak Bay is ranked as a super priority claim in the receivership of Oak Bay Beach Hotel, which owes nearly $800,000 in 2014 property taxes. The receiver commissioned the Altus Group to review and appeal the BC Assessment values which they expect will materially reduce the property taxes to be borne by the hotel in the future.

Website redevelopment is a priority as a primary marketing booking channel with

22 per cent of hotel room nights booked there. Room reservations for June through September are up 253 per cent over 2014.

The OBBH has a fundraising partnership with the David Foster Foundation. Since its re-opening, the hotel had collected approxi-mately $20,000 from the sale of live theatre event tickets for donation to the foundation that hadn’t been remitted to the founda-tion as of receivership. Ernst and Young has continued the partnership, honouring the outstanding donations.

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Jennifer Blyth, News staffParticipants in this year’s Scotiabank MS

Walk will enjoy a new route at a new location, but their goals remain unchanged.

After many years at Willows Beach, walkers will this year gather at Marigold Elementary School before heading out along the Galloping Goose Trail toward Thetis Lake.

“We are excited about the new location and how central it is for Greater Victoria. We hope this move makes the event more accessible to people from Sidney, Saanichton, Brentwood Bay, View Royal, Colwood and Langford and encourages them to join us on May 3 with their friends and family,” says Ashley Hodgins, Manager of Development, MS Society Van-couver Island Region.

In addition, the new location offers more parking, a mix of concrete and grass surfaces to make participation easier for those in a wheelchair and a beautiful tree-lined route with fewer road crossings and less vehicle traf-fic.

While much is new for this year’s walk, its goals, atmosphere and motivation remain unchanged. As always, the route is fully acces-sible to people using wheelchairs, scooters and walkers. Participants will also enjoy delicious food from Country Grocer and Island Farms, not to mention on-site musical entertainment that will set the tone for the day.

“With everybody coming out the whole thing is quite lovely. With so many people it’s a nice place to be and a happy event,” says Pippa Blake, entering her 13th MS Walk as Rise Above Barriers team captain.

Crediting “wonderful friends and fam-ily who have been in it from the start,” her team has raised more than $30,000 over the years, estimates Blake, who champions both the MS Society staff and the services they provide. “It really is the most unique place because we just have everything under one roof.”

The MS Society of Canada strives each year to support both aspects of its mission: providing ser-vices to enhance quality of life for those living with MS and conducting research into the cause and cure of MS,

Hodgins explains.Donations to the MS Walk provide those

living with MS access to education seminars, information and emotional support, member and partner/caregiver support groups and the equipment provision program. They enjoy drop-in gym and exercise programs, phys-iotherapy, advocacy, social and recreational events, a resource library and much more.

In addition, donations also support MS research being conducted right here in British Columbia, Hodgins adds, noting that prog-ress toward ending a disease typically emerges from thousands of small breakthroughs from hundreds of researchers. Tens of thousands of fundraisers each contribute to those small breakthroughs, which lead to bigger and bet-ter ones.

One of the key aspects of the walk is its sense of community. When MS strikes, there’s often no warning and for people experiencing symptoms for the first time, the cause is some-times misdiagnosed. For people living with MS, symptoms can worsen and new symp-toms can appear out of nowhere. The course of the disease affects everyone differently and can change without warning, which makes it difficult to live with.

“So, to combat a disease that is so unpre-dictable, we organize, prepare for and plan an event – the Scotiabank MS Walk – to come together on a particular day at a particular time to celebrate what we can accomplish together,” Hodgins says. “And when we see you and your family and friends, we want to announce to everyone that we’ve met our fundraising goal, because we will only find a cure for MS if every-one helps.”

HOW CAN YOU HELP?Asking for and receiving a donation is both powerful and inspira-

tional, and almost all of the MS Walk fundraisers get their donations in more than one way, Hodgins says, pointing out that challenging yourself is a great way to build confidence and build on your initial fundraising success.

“So, don’t just post on Facebook, put up a fundraising poster at work and start a fundraising conversation with colleagues. Host a bottle drive, clean out your garage for a garage sale or put items up for sale on UsedVictoria.com under the #UsedHelps option. Email all of your contacts, pledge yourself and ask people to match your commitment to ending MS,” Hodgins says.

“Thank you to everyone in the Greater Victoria area for your ongoing support. Together we will end MS.”

Beams of colour will stream through the high stained glass windows infus-ing already-bright Ted Har-rison works with light in the latest exhibition to honour the late, great artist.

Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria celebrates his life and work with a public show and sale starting April 7. Har-rison, who died in Victoria in January, had a lifelong con-nection with the Anglican Church.

Malcom Read, one of the organizers of the event, had an idea spurred by a fellow church member’s friend-ship with Marion Carroll. He knew the Harrison family and Carroll family had long ties going back to their days living in Carcross, Yukon.

“It seemed to me there was not any opportunity to recognize his association with the Anglican Church,” Read said, noting that as a child, Harrison was a choir boy in Wingate in County Yarrow.

He became actively involved when he moved to Carcross, Yukon. Their cabin, on the edge of Crag Lake, is now an artists’ retreat in his name.

Over coffee, a group of the churchgoers hashed out a plan – the Christ Church Cathedral 150th Anniversary Celebrations Exhibition and Sale of Art by Ted Harrison. All sale proceeds will go to the cathedral’s newly estab-lished 150th anniversary fund, in support of its ongoing ministry to the city.

“It seemed an opportunity to celebrate his life in some way and his contributions to the Anglican Church,” said Read, adding the space is ideal for any art, but with its bright stained glass windows, is perfect for Harrison works.

The exhibition ties nicely into previ-

ous work the artist did for the Anglican church, says Carroll, who knew Harri-son and his wife Nicky for 30 years. Carroll too, lived in the Yukon, moving there with her late husband, Desmond, in 1985 as he

became dean of the church there.

Ted and Nicky offered to do the stained glass win-dow for the Whitehorse cathedral, Carroll recalled. He designed the panes, but there wasn’t a budget to have the work done.

“Ted generously offered to do a painting of the original cathedral … they sold very

quickly and raised the necessary funds in just a couple weeks,” Carroll said.

“That Old Log Church print can still be pur-chased on the Harrison website.”

In lieu of a signature, Ted, Nicky, their son Charles and their two dogs appear in a pane of the stained glass creation.

He was also heavily involved in the Anglican Church in Carcross, where the families lived.

“He was very involved in the organization there. In his own words, he said he pretty much ran the church there,” Carroll recalled. “Whenever Ted represents church in a landscape it’s always the Anglican Church in Car-cross… it’s almost a sig-nature. It’s a bit like the raven.”

Shortly after he moved to the Yukon, Harrison’s art underwent a sudden transformation to the bril-liant, colourful style for which he became famous.

“That was where Ted threw away his rule book; he tried to apply the tradi-tional rules and he found he couldn’t,” Carroll said.

After he moved to the Island, his Oak Bay studio was often visited by art lovers of all ages. Several

of them are lending private copies of his work to the exhibit.

“He was very eclectic. In Victoria he was involved in the Unitarian Church too because his little dog Maggie could come to church with him,” Carroll said.

In honour of his father, Charles has donated 10 limited-edition prints of some of his most famous and beloved images, which are numbered, signed, dated and being framed by the same business the man himself used, Prestige on Oak Bay Ave-nue. The works will be sold by silent auc tion during the exhibition.

Alongside the prints for sale, publishers have donated books for sale including A Brush Full of Colour: The World of Ted Harrison by Mar-griet Ruurs and Katherine Gibson, as well as Ted Harrison Collected, with forward by Victo-ria author Robert Budd, that launches April 4.

The exhibition and sale runs weekdays April 7 to 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A book collection of Ted Har-rison prints launches the same day as his Saturday memorial at the University of Victoria.

Ted Harrison Collected is the brainchild of the late artist’s curator Kaitlyn Webb Patience and Victoria author Robert “Lucky” Budd.

“I’m a really big fan of his art so I got in touch with his cura-tor three years ago to buy a print,” says Budd, whose work includes a best-selling series collaboration with Roy Henry Vickers artwork on Northwest Coast legends.

His second title in the series came out last year and it was time to begin the Harrison book. “I’m a huge fan of Ted’s art and the book was there needing to be done,” he says. “One of the things that’s always impressed me about Ted’s art is there’s an element of folk to it. It’s art for people.”

Ted Harrison Collected (Doug-las & McIntyre) features 85 of the former Oak Bay resident’s 88 limited-edition prints cre-ated between 1980 and 2010.

With format in mind, he set-tled in to a series of in-person conversations while poring over artwork in what turned out to be Harrison’s final months.

Day after day living in this city I feel an overwhelming sense of futility. There is a problem that has affected directly or indirectly every citizen. It is something your co-worker may have experienced this morning, or maybe your neighbour told you about last week.

It happens every day. It destroys faith in humanity and can be understated as petty crime.

Bike theft. This letter is written in hope of

change; maybe one stolen bike can be recovered or better yet prevented.

My wife and her co-worker bicycle from their respective houses every day, rain or shine to downtown Victoria. One less car? Bike-friendly city? Stay in shape? All of the above.

The problem is they have now been forced to walk, drive or bus. All due to our city’s rampant problem with bicycle theft.

Having locked bikes stolen in broad daylight, with the perpetrator caught on camera is not enough for justice. Both victims were forced to scrounge enough savings to start again.

With fresh commuter bikes, burly, state-of-the-art locks and a new plan for defense. This time the security guard tells them not to keep their bikes inside, safe from thieving eyes; instead they are kicked to the streets, picking a busy Starbucks front as the least likely candidate for more thievery.

But things go awry again.

This time it is seats and safety lights, anything with seemingly minuscule value. How desperate are the thieves in our city? That answer should seem all too obvious, to way too many of us. Let’s step up and put an end to this rambling “petty” crime and return our lifestyles to something more enjoyable.

I have looked into GPS tracking devices. The technology is there but that won’t stop your seat from surreptitiously being ripped off. Bait Bike programs – are we doing enough? A quick Google search turns up the last successful program was by VicPD in 2006. Let’s ramp it up. If funding is the excuse, well, as property tax time is fast approaching I know how I would like some of my municipal dollars to be spent.

If we want to be a bicycle city more like our friends in the Netherlands then we need to collectively check the problems that discourage everyday citizens from going green and bicycling.

What is B.C.’s grand treaty plan?

Re: Treaty trouble has deep roots (B.C. Views, March 31).

No one would disagree that the B.C. treaty process hasn’t been as successful as hoped. Indeed, there are also many First Nations who think it is the wrong process of reconciliation altogether.

However, that doesn’t excuse

Premier Christy Clark’s recent decision to blindside B.C.’s treaty partners by refusing to appoint George Abbott as head of the B.C. Treaty Commission.

Although it might be comforting to think that Premier Clark’s reckless behaviour was done in consultation with the federal government, there is simply no evidence to suggest that.

Not only did Jerry Lampert, the federal government’s appointee to the treaty commission, say Ottawa was as surprised as the other parties to the process, but on March 26, NDP Leader John Horgan stood in the legislature and asked Premier Clark three times whether she had discussed her plans with the federal government, and she did not contradict the words of Mr. Lampert.

If the B.C. Liberal government has a grand plan for reinventing the treaty process, they aren’t sharing it with any of their constitutional partners.

B.C.’s approach to reconciliation needs to be re-energized so that First Nations, resource workers and those seeking to bring new investment to B.C. can have certainty. This means not only fixing the treaty process, but doing more to find a way forward with First Nations who have chosen a different path. That means working together, not going it alone.

On a map, Syria and Iraq are a long way from Oak Bay.

However, for those who have family and friends in the Canadian Armed Forces, the conflict there hits much closer to home.

Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper rose in the House of Commons asking MPs to support a 12-month renewal of an international fight against ISIL, including air strikes over Syria.

Canada, it should be noted, has contributed $700 million in humanitarian aid to the war-torn region. Yes, we are committing to more CF-18 sorties, but we are not stopping the help we are providing to children and other civilians caught in the conflict.

There is much to criticize about this government. All governments that have been in power for a time make mistakes.

However, we scratch our heads when we hear the exaggerated wailing about how Canada has lost its place in the world, lost respect, how we used to be a helper and peacekeeper but now we’re not.

We continue to provide hundreds of millions, no, billions to humanitarian aid, food and medical supplies and education to children who did not choose to be born in war-torn or drought-afflicted areas.

Has our role in the world changed? That was inevitable — the world

changed. We can no longer send brave members of our Forces into well-defined conflicts wearing baby blue berets.

But With a continued combination of humanitarian aid and armed support, Canada is doing what it has always done.

After nearly two decades with the Oak Bay Police Department, Sgt. Dave McMillan has grand plans to visit Europe and be a ‘full-time grandpa’ during retirement.

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

Sgt. Dave McMillan spent his final days as an Oak Bay Police officer with the added burden of planning his own retirement party.

Thursday marked his last official day working from the Monterey Avenue headquarters.

McMillan started his policing career with the Mounties in 1989, posted to Manitoba where the skies were big and blue, compared to grey, moun-tain-locked Ocean Falls, B.C. where he grew up.

“It was quite a culture shock,” he says. McMillan spent seven years on the Prairies

before his next 19 with Oak Bay Police, but it was there he had the highlight of his career. He worked closely with the aboriginal community, “being adopted by the chief of the day … and learning the language and culture.”

His goal was to change the perception of a police officer and it altered him as well. “It helped me as a person and a police officer … seeing a different side as opposed to just policing. Being inside their homes and seeing they’re people much like us.”

Seeking a move to B.C., he joined Oak Bay Police in 1996. “It worked out for me and my family … getting back to the Island was really important for us,” he said.

Deputy Chief Kent Thom describes McMillan as an “inspiration to everyone.”

“He’s funny but extremely professional. He makes everybody around him a better police offi-cer and a better person. It’s just the way he oper-ates,” Thom said. “He’s going to be missed signifi-cantly. I think he’s one of those guys we are going to miss more than we realize.”

The entire crew came together with a few return-ees to say farewell on Thursday in a function at Oak Bay Recreation Centre.

“He is our unofficial event planner. He brings the group here together and is the prime reason we have the camaraderie we do here at the Oak Bay Police Department,” Thom said. “He comes up with wonderful ideas and puts them together. He

put his own farewell together.” McMillan’s aim was to thank everyone at once

with the evening event that included his entire support system, peers and family.

“I’m certainly going to miss them all and thank them all,” he said, adding “I wanted to thank the community for having confidence in me.”

Over the years, McMillan has worked in inte-grated units, been the administrative sergeant, on patrol and in the detective’s office. “There isn’t too much area he hasn’t covered, and he’s accom-plished a lot,” Thom said.

“I had a chance to move around,” McMillan said. “I had a very good career and I’m leaving on a

really good high note.” A “humble guy,”

McMillan also does a wonderful job present-ing the organization to the stakeholders, the public.

“His goal is to do the best possible job and improve the image and production of the Oak Bay Police Department. Everything he does is

for the good of the organization,” Thom says. Most recently in support services, he’s worked

with large events such as the Oak Bay Tea Party and others, ensuring the safety of residents and participants.

“It’s important for me that the department func-tions well,” he said. “Esprit de corps is very impor-tant.”

First up in the retirement plans is a bucket list item. He and wife Mary will celebrate both his retirement and their 35th wedding anniversary with an extended trip to Europe.

After some quality family time. “I have a number of grandchildren who will get

quite a bit of my time,” he said. “I’m looking for-ward to being a full-time grandpa.”

was a joy,” Budd said. “It was wonderful – he was down with talking about art or anything. He was a very down-to-earth person.”

Harrison died in Victoria on Jan. 16 at age 88.“I visited him three days before he died,” Budd

recalls. “I didn’t want it to be a biography … I wanted it to be about his process and his art. You step in the middle of a scene where something is moving or happening … even the mountains seem to have rhythm and dance.”

The collection showcases the numerous sub-jects and settings Harrison depicted in his signa-ture style of sweeping lines and broad swatches of solid pigment, a style he shifted to when he moved to the Yukon. “When you start looking at his art as a collection there’s a few really, really amazing things that come out,” Budd said.

For example he painted “a tonne of landscapes” with very little green which is “shocking for Cana-dian art.” The lack of faces also struck Budd, with exception of one moustache, which he addresses in the introduction.

“You start learning a little bit about who these characters are … and they are characters and they all live in his imagination,” Budd said. “He [Ted] said all of the characters in his drawings are out for a bit of fun.”

Budd enjoyed the narrative of those works, the storyline created by three decades of boldly coloured artwork.

“He had such deep, deep imagination … there’s so much joy in his art, in every single image.”

Budd says the quote from Harrison himself (on the back of the book) best describes it: “The North is a special sort of symphony: its landscape is a dance, the wind is an orchestra, and the cries of the birds are big notes in the background.”

“That’s exactly what I found,” Budd says. “His art is so musical, it’s impossible to not look at his art and not feel all the senses.”

The book will be available in book stores the same day as Ted Harrison’s memorial at the Uni-versity of Victoria.

The pre-design study is expected to start in early spring to explore options for separating storm and sewer waters in Uplands, with public consultation slated for fall.

The provincial government mandates that com-bined sewer and storm water sewers must be separated. Currently, the Uplands neighbourhood has a one-pipe system installed more than 100 years ago, to accommodate both sanitary sewer and storm water flows.

Last year the district commissioned a survey to collect pertinent data and with elevations work complete, the next step is to explore design options and corresponding costs estimates.

In February Oak Bay asked staff to prepare a request for proposals for a pre-design study to examine options for sewer separation in Uplands.

Options to be considered include a gravity sani-

tary sewer system, where the existing combined sewer would convey storm water; a gravity sys-tem for storm sewers, where the existing sewer would convey wastewater; a low-pressure system for wastewater; a low-pressure system for storm water; a combination of gravity and pressure sys-tems; and any other innovative approach envis-aged by the consultant.

The RFP will request site-specific geotechnical investigations to identify appropriate conditions for ground infiltration, either for rain-gardens or on-site ground disposal of rainwater. In addition, design concepts will reflect the desire to mini-mize trench construction and easements on pri-vate property which would potentially negatively impact fences, hedges, and, in particular, healthy, mature, trees.

The owner of a new coffee shop on the Oak Bay border is hoping the shop becomes a regular stop for local residents.

The Good Earth Coffeehouse opened on Oak Bay Avenue at the beginning of March.

“Things have been going a lot better than we expected,” said Erjon Bleta, owner of the coffee-house located at the corner of Oak Bay Avenue and Foul Bay Road.

“People have been supporting us and we already have repeat customers who come all the time. It proves that we’re in a great neighbourhood.”

In addition to coffee, Good Earth offers bakery products and is licensed for beer and wine sales.

“We bake in the back so the food is fresh,” said Bleta. “Our coffee beans are high quality, we use only Arabica beans. Most of our beans are organic and all of them are fair trade.”

He said they tried to make the atmosphere warm and welcoming, with lots of seating and an open floor plan.

“We tried to make it like a home for people of all ages, even for kids. We’ve got great gelatos,” said Bleta.

The Oak Bay coffeehouse is the third Good Earth location in Victoria and 51st since the com-pany started in Calgary in 1991.

Good Earth is open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 8

a.m. to 8 p.m. on [email protected]

Ages, gender, race, creed and capabilities blend as young people stand shoul-der to shoulder singing with the SingYourJoy cho-rus.

A no-cost, non-audition community chorus for young adults aged 16 to 29, “it’s bringing a real eclec-tic mix of people together,” said Christine Chepyha.

Under the direction of Chepyha and Gordon Miller, the 55-member, four-year-old SingYourJoy is an open com-munity of people from all walks of life. “The chorus tends to cross-pollinate a whole range of people,” Miller said.

The diverse group includes, for example, those with hearing and mobility challenges; gender and sexual identification aren’t even a part of the conversation.

“We don’t even have to talk about it. These are not issues in the chorus because they

shouldn’t be,” Miller said. The group incorporates their

sense of community with a trip to Our Place once in each six-week season. “It’s awareness for them of what the family at Our Place looks like,” Miller said. “It breaks down those barriers … and they’re there to help. We believe we’re building social capital.”

While building friendships and community, the singers

also develop a skill-set they share with the public once each season. “They’re com-ing together and learning about being in community together,” Miller added. “The concert is one goal, it’s perhaps not the primary goal.”

“Yet it’s not secondary,” added Chepyha.

SingYourJoy offers Time Warp, featuring a few of their favourites and the titu-lar song, April 10 and 11. “Our repertoire is eclectic and wide-ranging,” Chepyah said.

Lorde and Lady Gaga are on tap along with inspiring choral arrangements. “We’ve experi-enced some incredible growth in these four years,” Chepyha said.

Time Warp starts at 7 p.m. April 10 and 11 at Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell St. Tickets are $10 to $15. Email [email protected], visit singyourjoy.ca or call 250-213-1948 or 250-882-5668 for details. [email protected]

Kelowna car artist sportifi es Tesla

Kelowna resident Rick Kelly thinks Tesla has missed the boat with its Model S design, so he’s created his own sporty coupe version of the electric car.Well, actually, the car-loving artist has created a digital version of what he calls a Model S 2+2-coupe concept. Kelly explained: “The only ‘sporty’ electric vehicle on the market right now is the BMW i8 – I’ve seen one here in Kelowna and it is spectacular, albeit out

of most people’s price range ($145,000). Tesla has the performance in its electric Model S to be entertaining as a driver’s car. The Model S is one of the nicest-looking cars on the road, but it has FOUR doors – that precludes it from being ‘sporty’ in my book.”You can check out Kelly’s other creations at his website: http://automotiveart.shawwebspace.ca, his blog at http://digital-automotive-art.blogspot.ca and he even has a fun iBook called Digital Automotive Art on iTunes.Check it out. What do you think about Kelly’s digital re-creation of the $114,700 Tesla?

Vancouver auto show becoming world classAs the 2015 Vancouver Interna-tional Auto Show fades into our rearview mirror, it’s a good time to reflect on what a fantastic show it was.Yours truly travels all over the world to such exotic locations as Paris, Geneva, Beijing, New York and Frankfurt, for much bigger auto shows. But to me, it is obvious that the setting for the Vancouver show is, hands down, the best around. The Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre is a stunning building; from the huge windows, to the exposed wood and living roof, it is a world-class venue. And with the expansion this year’s show underwent, the Vancouver show is moving into the big leagues. By keeping the lower exhibit hall exclusively for the big auto manufacturers to showcase the latest, shiny cars, and adding the upper main ballroom and concourse locations helped the show breathe and provided flow. As much as the hot new cars get the atten-tion, often the local vendors can create a stir. Like the gang at Fine Vehicles, who buy

left-hand drive Land Rover De-fenders in Europe and then ship them to England to be rebuilt, before they are imported to Canada. The buyer gets a brand new Land Rover that is unavail-able here, starting at $75,000. The top floor also provided much more walking room for the large crowds to mingle and check out the collection of ex-otic cars or the vintage Corvette collection. It’s the lower floor where the big manufacturers spend a lot of money on elaborate stages to promote the latest and greatest from high-horsepower supercars to fuel sipping environment

vehicles or practical family crossovers. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is one of this year’s most anticipated cars, with 650hp and a track-ready setup that would make any driver look good. Dodge, not willing to take second seat, actually adds a back seat to its powerhouse Hellcat Charger or Challenger. These two new models come with 707hp and the factory has had to suspend orders so the production can catch up with demand.

Big power may be back but not to worry, the environmentally minded cars were never far from sight. The Vancouver show was chosen to announce the new Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Green Car of the Year Award. This year’s winner is the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle, providing a practical design with full electric capabilities. Also on display was the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell vehicle, capable of running on hydrogen, with no tailpipe emission, only water vapour. The hottest trend in the market today is the small crossover vehicles that come in many shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. The Fiat 500X is an example of the latest from Europe, allowing a young family practical, thrifty transportation in a stylish Italian design. Built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, the 500X has more panache and curb appeal. The 2015 Vancouver International Auto Show marked the 95th year of this annual event and it was the biggest and boldest yet.

‘‘As the only game in town when it comes to four-wheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries such as mining, logging, construction.’’Rob Rothwell

Sprinter is built for BC resource sectorBy Rob Rothwell

British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains are renowned for their steep north faces and massive old-growth cedars. While its rugged terrain is largely inac-cessible by road, logging activities have given rise to a network of steep, roughly cut access roads, which the spring thaw recently converted to deep quagmires of confidence-sucking mud, rock, and debris. What fool would attempt to drive a large commercial-style van up these routes of impending doom? Me for one. Mercedes-Benz invited me to explore the capabilities of their Sprinter vans available with four-wheel-drive, or in Mercedes-Benz parlance: 4ETS. In the world of commercial high-roof vans, the Sprinter is the only one

in Canada fit with traction at all four corners. Known technically as 4-wheel Electronic

Traction System, 4ETS is an option on V6 diesel-powered Sprinters, including the dual rear-wheel long wheelbase 3500 model. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000 for the feature, which can be paired with low-range gearing and downhill descent control for those seek-ing to maximize the Sprinter’s off-road fortitude. 4ETS is driver-activated as needed via a dash-mounted switch. When the grit of four-wheel-drive isn’t necessary, the setup enables optimal fuel-economy by returning the vehicle to rear-wheel-drive, thereby reducing fuel-robbing mechanical drag. While active, 4ETS splits torque 35/65 front-to-rear. This ratio doesn’t change

though traction-control and stabili-ty-related programs remain active to improve grip and increase safety. These programs can be disabled should the driver require the ability to spin the wheels in an effort to unglue a stuck Sprinter. Keeping one’s right boot deep into the Sprinter’s turbocharged throttle enabled its four wheels, clad in winter tires, to keep digging for traction while spitting out congealed mud and deleterious earthen material in an effort to supply forward propulsion. And it worked. We battled ruts so deep that the entire underside of the van banged and shud-dered viciously as rocks and buried tree limbs from former logging operations

did their best to impede progress. The ride-height of 4ETS-equipped Sprint-ers is increased by 75 mm (3-in) at the rear and 100 mm (4-in) at the front, which improves the vehicle’s approach and departure angles while also impart-ing a 24-inch wading depth.Interestingly, I didn’t find the additional ride-height detrimental to highway driving. The Sprinter felt exceptionally well anchored to the road and remark-ably secure on its winter rubber, even at high-speed on backroads of broken, patchy pavement. As the only game in town when it comes to four-wheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries

such as mining, logging, construction, and any other work environment locat-ed off the beaten path – and that’s huge in a resource-based province like B.C. The long-chassis Sprinter 3500 with dual rear wheels could easily serve as a roll-ing workshop for trades’ people needing access to work camps where four-wheel-drive wherewithal is essential. Mercedes-Benz will also equip the passenger version of their Sprinter with 4ETS. Ski resorts and lodges, such as the Monashee Lodge, will undoubtedly appreciate the expanded capability. The recreational market is another niche ripe for off-road performance. [email protected]

In 1985, there were five breeding pairs of Western Purple Martins left in the wild.

Well, “In the wild” isn’t even really accu-rate, as they were nest-ing in the portholes of an old decommissioned ship at the Department of National Defence dock in Colwood.

But then people with the Victoria Natural History Society and Western Purple Martin Foundation stepped in and started putting up nesting boxes to com-pensate for the loss of their natural habitat. Now, approximately 1,000 mating pairs return to the area each spring from their win-ter migration to South America.

“There was a slow and steady increase over the first few years (of the nesting box pro-gram),” says founda-tion director Charlene Lee.

By about 2002, she adds, there were approximately 200 pairs. It was evidence the program was work-ing and the foundation received funding to expand it.

“We weren’t sure, being a swallow, that they would take to the boxes,” Lee says, explaining many swal-lows are territorial about their nesting areas.

More boxes were put up at the DND docks, Royal Roads University, Goldstream Park and at Pedder Inlet near Pear-son College.

The Purple Martin’s instinctual nesting habitat is in the holes woodpeckers make in burned-out trees and other dead or dying wood. These days, Lee says, those areas are forested rather than left to nature, creating a lack of area for the birds to nest upon their annual return from South America.

The growth of the population also has a lot to do with luck – at least the meteorologi-cal kind. Lee says there needs to be the right kind of weather at the right time to create the natural circumstances

that support increased numbers.

“From 2002 to 2006 we had really good summers for bugs,” she says. Martins sur-vive off large bugs like moths, beetles and dragonflies, as opposed to smaller ones like mosquitoes, so if those types of insects aren’t plentiful when the mar-tins are trying to feed their young, progress is lost in the resurgence efforts.

If it’s too wet at the wrong times or for too long, not enough of the birds’ preferred diet is produced for the ones that are trying to sur-vive, let alone to feed their young.

It remains to be seen what the numbers will be like this year. The first ones are expected to return to the area to nest in late April.

While the nesting box program is not actively being expanded now, those willing to put up boxes and manage them are encouraged to email Lee ([email protected]).

Martins are not a “backyard bird,” as they like wide-open areas with water nearby.

The (hopeful) return of the Purple Martin

Danielle Pope/Pearson College UWC

Western Purple Martins returned from their southern migration last spring to find some new homes on Pedder Inlet.

Backyard bird enthusiasts should regularly clean their bird feeders and bird baths at this time of year, as migratory songbirds return from their winter retreats.

Species such as pine siskins, red-polls and grosbeaks congregate in large flocks in spring, and their close contact at a time of weather stress and nutrition shortage can pass dis-eases from bird to bird, says a bul-

letin from the B.C. forests ministry.Cleaning feeders every two weeks

and changing water in bird baths every few days can reduce the spread of avian pox virus, avian conjunctivi-tis and salmonella bacteria among birds. Using metal or plastic feeders rather than wood, and installing mul-tiple small feeders, rather than a sin-gle larger one, also reduces the risk of disease transmission.

Getting a sense of what’s hot and what ideas might work in your own home have long been drawing cards for the Young Life Home Design and Renovation Tour.

Celebrating its 25th year of showcasing the work of some of the South Island’s best practitioners in restoration, renovation and new home construction, the tour has provided many visitors with ideas and connected them with professionals in the industry.

This year’s tour, set for April 10 and 11, offers some serious makeovers, from a 400-square-foot micro-loft suite in Fairfield to a 1973 Saanich home that has been transformed into an ultra-modern living space.

While four of the 10 homes on tour are essentially brand new contemporary designs, a common theme in the remaking of the other homes has been renovating the kitchen and moving out from there, says Young Life tour spokesperson Bill Okell.

“It boggles my mind the whole emphasis put on the kitchen reno; that’s what stands out really,” he says. “I think almost all the (pre-existing) homes are complete renovations, but it’s amazing what gets initiated in the kitchen.”

While updating each of those homes’ dining and food preparation areas was central to the renovations, the structures themselves are a mix of styles, from a typical 1960s family home in Gordon Head to a spacious, restored Central Saanich farmhouse that will leave one daydreaming of the Deep South.

As always, the tour organizers encourage homeowners, designers and suppliers to stick around during the tour to speak with visitors about

their work, ideas and sources of inspiration.

Those conversations invariably wind up happening in the kitchen, Okell says.

“When you look at a kitchen with all the appliances, the sink detail and the counters, it’s a great conversation starter,” he says. “You can really display your products, from countertops to cupboards, the electronic aspect or even the utilization of a fan – the technology that’s drawn into that busy area of the home is really quite amazing.”

The tour provides an opportunity to witness firsthand the workmanship offered by some of Victoria’s most reputable designers and builders, including Jason Good Kitchens, Max Huxley and Emma Dane Design, to name just a few. The 1,000-plus expected visitors should have a great time viewing some stunning homes.

While the tour always attracts Greater Victoria architecture and design fans, the two-day event is the primary fundraiser for Young Life, a Christian organization that

provides teens with a summer camp opportunity at RockRidge Canyon near Princeton, B.C., and runs various other local programs for youth at schools and in the community.

Passport-style booklets for the self-guided tour sell for $25 and are available at hardware stores around the region, as well as the Young Life office; call 778-977-3551 to arrange pickup. For passport sales locations and more information on the tour visit younglife.ca/victoriahometour.

Turning a 400-square-foot suite into a luxurious micro-loft was a labour of love for the owner of this home in Fairfield. Its vaulted ceilings and expansive windows open up the cozy space to the garden and patio. It’s part of this year’s Young Life Home Design and Renovation Tour.

Visitors to be inspired by upgrades and modern construction
