Ripping along behind a boat can be an ideal way for a teen to spend summer vacation. Oak Bay 15-year-old Patricia Horwood can’t

remember life before waterskiing and that longevity and love led to multiple medals last month. This summer marked her second trip to the BC Summer Games.

“It was fun. The first time I went there weren’t very many girls,” she said. Nine

BFF night at Sweet DelightChristine van ReeuwykNews staff

Leash your pets and bring them by. Barb Marquardt, owner/operator of Sweet

Delights Victoria in Oak Bay, found the simple sentiment in a sign online while perusing a site featuring Victoria Adoptables. She had to have one for the candy shop in Athlone Court on Oak Bay Avenue.

Now, sign in the window, she figures it’s time to give back to the non-profit organization that provided the pithy reminder that furry animals should not be left in cars.

“The Oak Bay market is perfect because it’s going to be a busy night anyway,” Marquardt said. “We’ve got the tent, it’s nice and cool, probably won’t be overwhelming for the pets.”

So on Wednesday the store invites all pet owners to shop with their BFF’s (best furry friends) and Victoria Adoptables, through the Victoria Humane Society, will benefit.

Partial proceeds from all sales during the Oak Bay market from 4 to 8 p.m. will benefit the Victoria Humane Society. The usual market night prize wheel will be by donation, cotton candy proceeds and another prize by-donation will all raise funds for the society.

“They’re going to come as well with a pet, a dog, and some of their things for sale,” Marquardt said. “I love animals and pets and I think this is a good way to give back to animals and the community.”

The August market featuring live music and more than 100 local vendors runs 4 to 8 p.m. rain or shine on Aug. 13 along the village core of Oak Bay Avenue.

Alyn EdwardsSpecial to the News

The 1926 Cadillac Custom Imperial Suburban Limousine purchased new at Victoria’s Begg Motors for $6,904.35 by the descendants of coal magnate Robert Dunsmuir is once again dignifying local streets and avenues. The magnificent custom aluminum-bodied seven passenger limo that cost a king’s ransom and transported the Dunsmuirs to tea and other social events in B.C.’s capital city had a very colourful life.

With the start of WWII, the big limousine was requisitioned for an ambulance. The door post on one side was removed to allow a stretcher to be placed inside.

When it was returned to the Nanaimo Colliery Company, the Dunsmuir family of Victoria that owned the coal mines no longer had any use for the old limo. They gave it to chauffeur Percy T. Fallick.

In time, the car ended up in a salvage yard in Prince George with the engine in the back seat. The old limo was rescued by a local enthusiast who had the engine rebuilt.

Eventually, the car came into the possession of one of Vancouver’s most flamboyant characters of the 1960’s. Vancouver businessman George Patey had been very involved in show business and became world famous through his purchase of the bricks from the Chicago garage where the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place. The Al Capone hit on the rival Bugs Moran gang saw seven people lined up against the wall and shot on February 14, 1929.

George Patey knew the massacre

getaway car was a Cadillac similar to the Dunsmuir limo. Patey had the old Cadillac painted in bright colours and upholstery redone in wild fabrics and had the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre wall reconstructed in the men’s room of his new Gastown night club called the Banjo Palace. The wall behind the urinal was then covered with plexiglass on which Patey painted targets to be aimed at.

When Patey closed his night club in 1976, the Cadillac limo was sold. It was eventually purchased by the BC Transportation Museum in Cloverdale for $6,500 – just short of the original cost of the car.

All assets were sold when the museum closed in the late 1980’s with the limo going to the Nanaimo Heritage Initiative connected to the Malaspina College history department. With the dissolution of the heritage initiative in 2002, the car was taken over by the Nanaimo Chapter

of the Vintage Car Club of Canada. The car needed to be restored and it was eventually sold to the owner of a restoration shop in Gibsons.

Victoria resident Dale Mackie was working for a tour business in Victoria with his restored 1954 Cadillac limousine when he heard about the Dunsmuir car being offered for sale on the internet. He bought it.

It was his intention to fix the car up and use it to convey tourists around Victoria with points of interest to include the mansions and castles left behind by the Dunsmuir family.

Over a 21-month period, the former welding and fabrication shop operator completely disassembled the car and painstakingly rebuilt it to new condition. Dale and restorer John Pietroniro worked six days a week on the car. The aluminum body was in surprisingly good condition and only needed some minor smoothing.

But the wood frame over which the body was constructed was rotted and needed replacing. The original floor boards were in such good condition they could be re-used. Workers at the factory had engraved numbers in the wood for recording body style 6355 and model 6700.

It was a custom-built body by Fisher. The restored limo has been painted

in blue with black top and fenders. The interior is blue fabric with plush royal blue carpeting. This was among the most luxurious cars of the era with rear fold down jump seats for extra passengers, silk window shades, a curved roll up division window and windshield for added ventilation.

The only original part that has eluded Dale is the Stentor phone that passengers used to direct the chauffeur. The limo has been appraised at $140,000.

As an experienced tour guide, Dale Mackie developed a keen interest in the family that was once the wealthiest in Western Canada and owned homes like Craigdorroch Castle built on a hill overlooking Victoria in the 1800’s. Knowing how historic the Dunsmuir family’s Cadillac limo is, he decided not to use it for tours.

The amazing piece of Victoria history will be on display along with up to 300 special interest vehicles at the Oak Bay Collector Car Festival that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10.

“Each year, I look for an outstanding heartwarming feature vehicle to take centre stage at our event,” says organizer Ken Agate. “The Dunsmuir family limousine will be placed in the prime position.”

For more information on the show that attracts approximately 15,000 people visit bletheringplace.com online.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Walkers hope to see something super during the August Embrace the Night.

The Super Moon, when the full moon coincides with having it’s closest orbit to earth, creating the illusion of being up to 14 per cent larger than your average full moon, is set to rise that evening, Aug. 10.

“At 8:20 the moon rises so we’ll see it just near the end of the walk,” said Embrace the Night founder Ron Carter.

He’s seen a great success in the walks he started with a Valentine’s Day full moon meander in response to seeing too many televisions flickering through front windows on his own evening strolls.

“I like walking at night and when we’ve been out in the winter nights, especially in the dark it’s lonely out there,” he said. “It’s just so epidemic and it just means there’s that many people that aren’t enjoying the outside in our walkable community.”

While a dozen or so came out in February, and then again for

a St. Patrick’s Day affair, about 60 turned up for last month’s Embrace the Night, also organized on the eve of a super moon. He plans to hit the third super moon on Sept. 8 with a night walk.

“We’ve just been encouraged to keep going. There’s safety in numbers of course for people who are a little more timid,” he said. “I’m looking for neighbourhood leaders who might take a walk through north Oak Bay and south Oak Bay.”

This month, walkers will start at 7:30 p.m. and finish

around 9 p.m. at The Oak Bay Marina (Turkey Head) parking lot, south side, next to the latest piece of summer art by Chris Paul. The entrance to the marina is at the foot of Curry Road at Beach Drive. Participants will follow a route south along Beach Drive to Shoal Bay to see another new piece of Oak Bay’s borrowed summer art.

Contact Carter at [email protected] or visit caob.ca to learn more about volunteering. [email protected]

Hunter limits her paletteAngela CowanNews Staff

For someone who only started painting in 2000, Caroline Hunter has certainly made a splash in the art world.

After only a few years as an artist, she was invited to join the Oak Bay Artists Studio Tour, and quickly after was also accepted into the Sidney Fine Arts show. In 2009, with less than a decade of professional experience, Hunter was elected to Associate Signature Status by the Federation of Canadian Artists in recognition of her talents and passion for capturing her environment on canvas.

She may have only picked up a brush 14 years ago, but Hunter has been channelling a creative streak for as long as she can remember.

“I’ve always drawn, as a child, and actually designed clothes,” she said.

This particular talent developed into a unique opportunity when she was just 20 years old; in the year before she moved to Canada, Hunter designed original gowns for guests who attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

More than three score later, Hunter, now 81, continues to challenge her limits and take on new experiences.

She participated in the TD Art Gallery Paint-In this year for the first time, and found it exciting.

“The people are so warm and friendly,” she said. “When I was 80, I thought I was too old, but when I turned 81, I thought ‘what the heck?’” She’ll next be demonstrating her talents at the 10th annual Bowker Creek Brush Up on Aug. 10, something she’s enjoyed being a part of for more than half its history.

“I love the location,” she said of the Brush Up. “I think it’s a beautiful spot, and I happen to be right by the creek.”

She was introduced to the event through the other artists in the area and through the Oak Bay Community Artists Society, which organizes the Brush Up and is also involved with the Artists Studio Tour twice yearly.

Much of Hunter’s work is based on her particular brand of negative space painting, which lends a strong sense of balance to the finished image, she said.

“I underpaint, cover the canvas with dark red and dark blue, and paint the lightest colours last,” she said. “It’s so much fun. The fewer colours you use, and the more you keep some of the same colour throughout, the more it’s balanced.”

Hunter is also known for her extremely limited palette. She uses as few as five base colours, and blends all her greens from scratch.

Spectators wandering through the Brush Up are likely to see her working in her first love, watercolour, and she’s always happy to chat and answer questions.

Above all, she’s looking forward to painting under the dappled shade of Garry oaks and bigleaf maples.

“It’s a magical spot.”

Visiting Japanese artists get Eclectic

Every couple of years a small contingent of artists from Japan arrive in their sister city, Victoria. On the odd years Victoria sends a few artists to Japan, notably Robert Amos and Jimmy Wright.

This summer from Aug. 8 to 16, Eclectic Gallery in Oak Bay will host an exhibit by the visiting Japanese artists.

The artists will also offer a public demonstration of their skills during Oak Bay Night Market on Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Eclectic Gallery, 2170 Oak Bay Ave. Visit www.eclecticgallery.ca for more details.

Re: Plan to pay if you lose your lunch (News, Aug. 7)

Isn’t it the responsibility of the establishment to make sure nobody is over served?

Why bother putting together a ‘serving it right’ program if there are no consequences? If ‘serving it right’ states that you are responsible for getting your customers safely home, shouldn’t it include mistakes made along the way?

Painted piano provides fun site for learning

About this time every year I hold a Piano Boot Camp for my adult piano students.

This year we had a special treat, a field trip to the Painted Piano on Oliver Street. Ten of us played blues, jazz, and classical music in the beautiful sunshine. The Olympic Mountains were our audience, plus of fun family from New York. I think when they

go home they will have a slightly different impression of Canadians. Were not boring!

Well-played music still qualifies as noise

Re: Tickling the ivories a highlight of visit (Letters July 30) and Piano play meant as joyful noise (Opinion, July 30)

I am glad that the visitors from Texas enjoyed playing the piano (Texas has lots of room for pianos) and I am sure most of the players – including bad chopsticks – have

fun. I am not quite sure how this adds to the “character and integrity” of the citizenry of Oak Bay.

However, even well-played music of any genre is still “noise” to those who have not chosen to listen to it.

I am always delighted when people know by osmosis what others are thinking. To letter-writer Lynne Milnes I would say that I welcome the street market, light up celebration, Tea Party and parade, and also the annual Parade of Lighted Trucks – all of which are of limited sound duration.

Oak Bay best brace for crowds

If you love crowds this weekend is perfect to get out and about, maybe greet some of our guests, in Oak Bay.

Our fair community will be a destination for people from not only Greater Victoria, but across the Island and beyond as cars shined to perfection, and some still needing work, fill Oak Bay Avenue.

The annual car-themed street party – The Oak Bay Collector Car Festival (formerly Blethering Place) expects about 300 vintage and special interest vehicles. The entertainment from local favourites such as Johnny Vallis and Virtual Elvis draw even yet another set of people.

The car show alone expects to draw 15,000 viewers to our small part of the region.

Then there are more than 30 artists gathering for the annual Bowker Creek Brush-up on the green space along Bowker Creek at the same time. There people can hobnob with painters and learn more about technique or just enjoy the ambience. We’ve grown accustomed to sharing our space with guests who love Oak Bay and return to spend their money at other less busy times of year.

Crowds can be exhausting, annoying and exhilarating all at once.

As long as they’re tidy and respectful of our community – sounds like fun!

A new artist space will fill a small void on Oak Bay Avenue. In the pocket between Kharma Design Studio and Gold, Silver and Coin Shoppe, 17 artists launch Gage Gallery today.

“Some of us are from the art collective that was in Fernwood and folded a couple years ago and we have been missing it a lot,” said Diana Durrand, one of five board members. “We miss having that whole group support. We looked for a space that we could afford and that took a couple of months.”

The non-profit collective decided on 2031 Oak Bay Ave. because of its attractive appeal at an affordable price, the close proximity to other galleries, and because Oak Bay seems like a community supportive of contemporary arts and appreciative of exhibits.

“We were absolutely thrilled when we heard how supportive Oak Bay is of the arts,” said member Arlene Nesbitt, adding other galleries in the community have shown curiosity about the newcomer on the block. “They have been welcoming.”

After a couple coats of paint and some sweat equity it opens to the public Aug. 8.

“We have 17 artists who are all inviting people. It’ll be fun, we’ll spill out a little bit into the street.” Durrand said of the opening gala. “It’s an interesting way to show your work and have the support of a group. It’s not always easy, with different ideas … but it’s magic.”

Artists hail from all around Victoria, including one Oak Bay artist, Bonnie Helm-Northover.

“We’re a real eclectic bunch,” Durrand said. The artists span from those with multiple shows under his or her belt to relative newcomers to the scene. “We mentor the younger ones or the ones who haven’t shown a lot.”

The Gage hosts its grand opening and silent auction on Aug. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. The 17 artist-members will be on hand to chat about their works at

the introductory group show of contemporary art.

“Our first show will be a group show so it will be a mix of everything,” Durrand said. “Then the solo shows begin after our group show … Because we’re a collective we have a lot of freedom to do things. We’ll be able to do a lot of interesting things this year.”

There will also be an art auction fundraiser featuring the collective’s artists’ works at a

starting bid of $50. “We wanted to say thanks

to the people who support the arts and the Gage,” Durrand said. “At the same time, we want to raise funds to help us on our way.”

If you miss out on the grand opening, slide by Tuesdays through Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. when the gallery is open. The group show runs for three [email protected]

While Nanaimo hosted the Games, towed water sports competitors took to the waters of Quamichan Lake in the Cowichan Valley.

“I did one tournament there last year or the year before,” Horwood said, adding that knowledge of the area helped. “You get one round of familiarization, I chose slalom to get an idea of the course.”

Choppy weather marred the familiarization rounds but the athletes came through according to the Zone 6 towed water sports coach.

“She worked very hard, we had some tough conditions,” said Jed Leech, coach of the Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6) team.

“Fortunately (the water) was really good for the tournament and they (athletes) rose to the occasion.”

Horwood scored an impressive four medals: silver in slalom, silver in jumps, bronze on the trick skis and a team gold.

“She was a huge role in getting our team the gold medal for Zone 6,” Leech said. “She’s a great athlete, positive all the time and really happy to be there.”

In the one-ski event she favours, he figures she was just shy of topping the podium.

“Slalom she really strives in,” he said. “She was right there to get a gold medal. She had the potential to get the gold medal… almost every time.”

Horwood loves the challenge of slalom.

“I like slalom, I think it’s my best event. It’s challenging and works you technically,” Horwood said. “In slalom skiing you have an advantage being tall and I’m tall. In trick skiing being short is an advantage. Trick skiing is very difficult for me and I do a lot of body slams.”

With a limit of two Games per athlete, Horwood won’t be making a return come two years’ time, but she hopes other girls will take up the sport.

“There’s so many boys, we’re always trying to get new girls out to try and ski,” Horwood said. “It’s really fun. There are lots of events … usually anybody can find at least one event that they really like.”

Water skiing is a family affair for the Horwood clan, dad spends some unofficial time coaching Patricia and her three siblings. During provincials held in Abbotsford late last month, Patricia and her sister, Nicola, who enters Grade 12 at Oak Bay High this fall, were pitted head to head for the first time.

“She got all the gold,” said Patricia, who swept the silver medals.

An Escalade worth the waitCadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious ho-tels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at To-ronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. As one Torontonian put it, “that’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of rich people, or posers, looking the part. With a steady lineup of Ferrari, McLaren and other exotics parked outside, Cadillac was front and centre showing off its new full-size luxury SUV to a young, well-healed crowd of Toronto socialites and business people.

LooksGetting a full-size truck into a boutique hotel is like trying to park in one of those parking spots labelled “small car”. To get around this, the party part of the launch was held on a garage rooftop, transformed into a nightclub, complete with gourmet finger food, fancy

cocktails and live performers, including the requisite fire-twirling entertainers. There was even an Escalade-inspired golf cart to shuttle guests to the roof. The star of the show was the all-new 2015 Escalade, a vehicle Cadillac hopes will make up about 20 per cent of its overall sales. With a $6,000 price drop and very competitive packages, they hope even wealthy shoppers will stop to see the value in this SUV. It sure got attention, thanks to the fabulous LED projector headlamps and taillights. The angular shape is very contemporary and the sleeker sheet metal looks up to date.InsideThe Escalade has always made an impact when it arrives at any destination; the sheer size and attitude it projects says a lot about the person driving it. It is inside that needed to be refreshed the most, and the attention to detail Cadillac infused in its new truck should pay dividends. Any luxury buyer expects leather, wood, and smart infotainment and Cadillac delivers on all of these. The dash and doors are cov-ered with hand cut leather. The open-grain wood and contrasting interior materials like faux suede all make it look as rich as the buyer expects. Front and centre is Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system that I find easy to operate and interact with. The buttons below it are touch sensitive, there are no knobs or switches. The front passengers just swipe over the surface to change the volume and heat controls. DriveOne reason to buy a big truck-based SUV is to move people in numbers or tow a trailer to a cabin or cottage. That latter experience came with the drive portion of the Escalade launch, driving north of Toron-to to The Briars, a 100-hectare resort on the edge of Lake Simcoe. This family run complex includes a huge stretch of lake frontage, golf course, pools, tennis and activities for all ages and the Escalade fits right in. For moving a large family around in comfort, the

Escalade is wonderful as there is plenty of room to stretch out when the long wheelbase (ESV) model is chosen. Granted about 70 per cent of all buyers choose the shorter wheelbase as it looks less imposing and some might not need the interior vastness. Under the hood is GM’s premium 6.2L V8 with a whopping 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. This might seem like overkill but this larger engine can switch off to just four cylinders under light load, more often impacting fuel economy. The power goes to just the rear wheels, all four wheels or automatically controlled, all by a switch on the dash. My experi-ence driving for the day returned about

12L/100km in mostly highway driving. Not bad for a big truck.

VerdictThe new Escalade adds about $10,000 worth of new equipment like standard magnetic ride control for a more nimble ride. The cabin is much quieter, for doing big business deals on the phone, and the ride overall is much more refined than before. Starting at $79,900 the Escalade is for the well healed, but Cadillac representatives told me that most buyers shoot for the moon and buy the top Premium model for $90,500. The new Cadillac is fresh and much more refined, with features like never before. Do young wealthy buyers like the Cadillac brand and where it is going? The short answer is yes. GM claims this is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada and B.C. is a hot spot for the Escalade. It has been seven years since we’ve had an all-new Escalade… the wait was worth it.

Sophie was chosen as the icon for this event because of her public profile during the same decades the Sisters founded the first schools and hospitals in B.C., organizations like Mount St. Mary Hospital and Society of Friends of St. Ann’s Academy, who will both benefit from the proceeds, explained Kathleen Burton, chief development officer and executive director for the Mount St. Mary Hospital Foundation.

“She was a trailblazer of that time,” Burton said. “When they came over from Quebec it was four sisters and one laywoman, that left Quebec and arrived in Victoria. They were pioneers for all of B.C. for health and education.

“We wanted to find someone who had the same sort of passion and panache that the sisters had, that would be a direct tie in to the community here,” Burton said.

As the daughter of one of Oak Bay’s most affluent families, Sophie Pemberton received artistic training in Paris and was accepted for a gallery exhibition in London. She was the first woman to be honoured with the Prix Julian in 1899. Many of her paintings are in the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria or in the care of her descendants, the Pemberton Holmes family who also support the namesake tea fundraiser.

“It’s a great honour to have their support and backing,” Burton said. “A number of her descendents will be at

the tea.” The Sophie Pemberton Tea takes

place in the orchard of St. Ann’s Academy at 835 Humboldt St. Guests will be treated to tea, historic finger foods, a musical performance by Raven Baroque and a Victorian fashion show by Victorian Vogue. Guests are also encouraged to dress in period, though there is no code.

“A surprising amount of people have some Victorian pieces hiding in their closet, but the occasion to actually wear them doesn’t often come up,” co-ordinator Barbara Newton said.

The Sophie Pemberton Tea takes place Aug. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $35 and available at St. Ann’s Academy or Mount St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation at 861 Fairfield Rd.

Keeping it local, with every tow…

Angela CowanNews Staff

As August marches on with sunshine and heat, parents would normally be starting to eye back-to-school sales and new back-packs.

Unless serious progress is made on the B.C. teachers’ dispute with the province, and soon, students’ summer holidays may be extended a lot further than expected.

“Lots of people I’ve talked to have already said they’re anticipating the teachers won’t be back until October,” said Lucy-Ann Smith, owner and operator of Happy Camp-ers Childcare.

Happy Campers has 12 centres all through Greater Victoria and takes care of 450 to 500 children each day.

Most out-of-school care centres will con-tinue with what they call “strike camps,” said Smith, something they started in June when the teachers’ strike first took effect. Strike camps offer full-day care for parents who have to work and although the govern-ment has promised to subsidize parents with $40 per day for each child under-13 to help cover the extra costs, the allowance isn’t going to fix all the headaches parents have been dealing with.

A lot of care centres hire university students for the summer’s influx of kids, said Smith, and come September, they all go back to school. Centres could be left

short-staffed and ill-equipped to handle the higher demands for care.

That’s the case with the View Royal Out of School Care Society, said operations man-ager Leeann Lindberg.

“Most of our staff are university stu-dents,” she said. “It’s a matter of seeing if we have enough staff.”

Lindberg said they’re in a particularly sticky situation, because even though they’re not attached to View Royal elemen-tary, the care centre and pre-school is still on the school grounds.

“If the union doesn’t picket the parking lot, then we’re able to stay open,” said Lind-

berg. But even though the union has been “really good” about letting the centre stay open, the centre still rents a classroom from the school that would be off-limits should the strike continue.

“It’s going to limit the number of children that can attend with us,” Lindberg said.

From staffing challenges and extra costs to scheduling full-day care, to the potential for lost income and the disruption to stu-dents, parents and care centres have been hit hard by the teachers’ strike.

And if the rumour mill is true, come Sep-tember, there may still be a ways to go.

coordinated by trained staff. • Sta will assist your Mom with daily activities such as

bathroom routines, showering, escort to meals, recreation activities and prescribed exercises.

• 24/7 personal assistance provides peace of mind for the recovering person and the family.

• Costs generally include a furnished room, meals, sta ng and all services (telephone, TV, utilities) except medication.

• Social contact with other residents is therapeutic and goes a long way towards a speedy recovery.

• It is recommended that you begin to research respite options well before a surgery date is set.

• A minimum stay is required at some retirement communities.

Kiersten Fisher is a manager with the Ministry of Health. She and hus-band, Jon, have two daughters, Gwen, 3, and Nora, 1.

Q How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

A It’s definitely challenging, espe-cially since I’ve gone back to work full-time. I have a supportive husband who is a very hands-on dad and we are lucky to be surrounded by family who love to spend time with our girls, which gives us a break.

Q What are you reading right now? What kinds of books do you like to read with your children?

A I wish I had more time to read, but it takes me awhile to get through a book these days. I just finished Water for Elephants and am looking forward to reading the final book in Ken Follett’s Trilogy Series, Edge of Eternity.

My youngest daughter won’t sit still for a whole book yet, but my oldest loves Dr. Seuss and Robert Munsch. We also make the library a part of our regular routine, which means we always have new books to read. Current favou-rites are Owl Babies and The Deep Deep Puddle.

Q What is your favourite family activity to share together?

A We love being active as a family, doing

things like swimming and skating and we really enjoy being outdoors - hiking, playing at the park or going to the beach. I would have to say our favourite activity is walks around our neighbourhood. It’s truly amazing how children can turn the most ordinary places into a grand adventure.

Q The part of your day you look forward to the most?

A I love watching my kids play at daycare at the end of the day before they realize I’m there, and then of course their reactions when they do see me are amazing and can melt away even the worst day at the office.

Greater Victoria Family

For most of the “little” years, my girls and I spent summers on the swim meet circuit, chugging up and down Vancouver Island and on the Lower Mainland in our bright orange ’78 Volkswagen.

Since Dad worked weekends, it fell to me to load up the VW and navigate our way through cities and towns and back roads, take shortcuts and not-so-short-cuts, dodge traffic jams, find campsites and swimming pools. I became capable. But it all fell apart the day we left our home on Salt Spring Island to cover a protest at the legislature for the local newspaper. Usually, our travels included just us females. But this time Dad joined us, apparently throwing a wrench into my capability.

The day started with a lift in his eyebrows as I hopped into the driver’s seat. He mumbled something about my driving making him sick, but I waved him off, breezily indicating that of course I’d drive. Things were going well, despite being one of the last cars to disembark from the ferry. We were zooming down the highway, the girls and I chattering away, when, to my right, Dad grunted and tried to interrupt.

“Photo radar,” he snapped when

he could get a word in. Naturally, he assumed I was speeding.

“No problem,” I said, shrugging nonchalantly. But I sneaked a look at the speedometer and wondered how I could deter him from collecting the mail for the next six weeks.

“Now that is a real car,” I announced a few minutes later as we arrived at a red light next to a Porsche. “But,” I said, thinking out loud, “I bet I can beat him up the hill.”

I balanced my feet on the clutch and gas, looking between the Porsche and the light. Then – blast off. I whizzed through the gear changes as the Porsche meandered behind us. Then the driver realized what I was doing, gave a little grin and lurched forward, disappearing into the horizon. The backseat cheering stopped.

“Does she do this all the time?” Dad complained.

Our first stop was a mall (Dad had purchases to make). As we got out of the car, I reached for my purse … which wasn’t there. Okay, so I left it on the ferry.

“No problem,” I said, countering his withering look with an expression that said: “This sort of thing happens all the time and I’m perfectly capable of handling it.”

I picked up his cell phone (the days before we each had a phone) and after some difficulty, I managed to connect with a person at B.C. Ferries, discovering, yes, my purse had been found. (I told you so.)

Shopping for “him” now on hold for lack of credit card, we loaded back into the car. I threw the cell phone onto the dash, rolled down all the windows and roared off toward the legislature. Then came a sharp, right-hand turn onto Blanshard just as the light changed and a city-block-full of cars came at us. Horrified, I watched the cell phone slide across the dash and fly into the path of oncoming steel and rubber. Dad leapt like Superman from the car and managed to guide traffic around the phone, until the very last truck rolled by and crushed it like a bug into the asphalt.

“It’s not mom’s fault!” chimed my cheering section from the back seat.

“It was that damn truck,” I agreed meekly.

The rest of the trip occurred without too much incident, although I mistakenly thought I’d locked the keys in the car. (I didn’t mention this to anyone; at that point I would have broken a window and feigned a robbery to get at those keys.) The next weekend, the girls and I were back in the van, puttering off to a swim meet, with – I swear – my capability fully restored.

Matthew Atkinson is a very active soon-to-be 12 year old who is looking forward to entering Grade 7 this fall at Dunsmuir middle school in Colwood. He loves playing all sports, including football, hockey, basketball and lacrosse with his friends.

In school, Matthew’s favourite subject is physical education. He also helped younger students at his school by being a Big Buddy.

He played football with the Westshore War-riors for a few seasons, winning the Gold Cup in 2010. He has recently taken up both box and field lacrosse. This past box lacrosse season, he played for the Juan de Fuca Whalers pee wee ‘A’ team. They had an incredibly successful season and capped it by winning the gold medal at the 2014 Provincial Championships in Richmond in July.

The AGU is recognized as the leading society of geophysicists, and Weaver’s recognition is based on his body of work with oceanography and his climate change work with the U.N.

Weaver is the only Canadian to be included this year, one of 62 elected to the Fellowship in 2014.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this honour and recognition from the American Geophysical Union.  It is profoundly humbling to be recognized by my peers for my contributions to climate science over the last two decades.” Weaver said. “Now, more than ever we need research and science to inform policy deliberations as we seek to address the great environmental challenges of today.”

Contrary to what people may think, Oak Bay and the Uplands still offer the possibility for new home builders to create their own piece of paradise. That’s good news for buyers who are looking to settle into the community.

While it’s true, vacant lots in the municipality are few and far between, realtor Cassie Kangas, of DFH Real Estate Ltd., maintains that should not be an obstacle when choosing the area you want to live in.

“The first thing that people need to do is think about the fact that they’re probably not going to find a vacant piece of land,” said Kangas. “There is the odd lot that comes up for sale, but not a lot. People are going to have to buy a house and tear it down.”

Born and raised in Oak Bay, Kangas uses her knowledge and experience of the area in her job and is aware of the misconception that building in Oak Bay is a difficult, tedious process.

“It’s really no different than any other

municipality,” she said. “There are certain rules. Before people go to buy a lot and build in Oak Bay, they need to think about what it is they want to build, and go to the municipality.”

The District of Oak Bay’s building and planning department, Kangas said, are very helpful in giving prospective buyers an idea of what they can and

cannot do on any street in any part of the municipality.

“If people do their homework and go to the municipality first,” she adds, “it will make their lives much easier when starting out.”

Kangas also advises getting a realtor who knows about looking for a tear-down house. She sees a lot of people trying to find what they are looking for by

using the internet, but adds there’s a lot of information the public can’t see that is available to realtors.

People also need to be aware about the rules and regulations concerning demolitions these days.

“You used to be able to tear down a house, and it wasn’t that expensive,” Kangas said.

Now, she says, with the new regulations on

hazardous materials (Hazmat) and the Worker’s Compensation Board, and because you’re likely dealing with older homes that may contain asbestos, the costs to take a house down have increased.

“The type of tear-down house you’re going to be dealing with can make a difference to your budget as well,” she [email protected]
