March I0,20t6 Dea r Commissioner Proctor, ln response to your request to the Florida Department of Education, the teachers of Oak Ridge Elementary would like to inform you of the following: Although we oppreciote your concern ond effort, it would have been more oppreciated ond beneficiol to the Oak Ridge community (administrotion, teochers, staff, porents, and students) if you hod consulted with the Ook Ridge community before your request to the Florido Deportment of Educotion. However, we the teachers of Oak Ridge Elementary would like to share with you how you con help our community (specifically our students) ond school progress acodemicolly and socially. ¡ Ask Leon County School Board and Superintendent for consistent school leadership. (ln the past L0 years Oak Ridge has had 4 principals, 6 assistant principals). o Ask Leon County School Board and Superintendent to increase funding to provide additional staff and other educational needs. o Create strategies to encourage parents to enroll pre-school children in Pre- K programs. r Create opportunities for daycares to provide extended hour for the working parents. (A single parent might be working two jobs or working hours that overlap or conflict with school hours and the child is at home alone or with a baby sitter that cannot provide home work help). o Create opportunities for more Pre-K providers. ¡ Create programs and opportunities for families that are over the income limit and do not qualify for supplemental daycare or families of children that do not qualify for programs for children that are developmentally delayed. (Some families cannot afford expensive child care and continue to pay their regular household expenses). ¡ Extend days and hours for the BL Perry Public Library and create opportunities for mentoring and tutoring. o Create strategies to bring library resources into the community to encourage reading. Example L.Bring the book mobile back into the community for residents that do not have transportation or supervision to get the public library. Example 2. Have the public library to come into the school and sign every child up for a library card. Example 3. Create a plan with the school to encourage summer reading. r Develop a plan to encourage churches and businesses to become business partners and mentors at school and in the community. o Encourage the Local Education Agency (Leon County Schools) to increase funding to provide additional staff and other educational needs. o Create strategies and opportunities to encourage and increase parent involvement. Go into the Oak Ridge communities (Briarwood, Wilson Green, Cascade Mobile Home Park, etc.) and have a Town Hall meeting on parent involvement, education, transportation, and other community concerns. (lnto the community means; a church in the neighborhood, a neighborhood clubhouse, or the yard of a house or provide transportation residents to your designated location and allow the community members to respond).
