BAKED SESAME-GINGER SALMON IN PARCHMENT

Ingredients

1 teaspoon sesame oil

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger

1 teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons honey

Pinch of red-pepper flakes

2 large zucchini, halved lengthwise and

thinly sliced

1 red onion, halved and thinly sliced

1 lime, quartered

Four 6-ounce skinless salmon fillets

4 teaspoons sesame seeds

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare four pieces of parchment (about 15 by 17 inches). Fold

each piece in half to make a crease, then unfold and set aside.

2. In a small bowl, whisk the sesame oil with the soy sauce, ginger, garlic powder, honey and

red-pepper flakes to combine.

3. Build the parchment packets one at a time. One one side of a piece of parchment, place a

quarter of the zucchini in an even layer and top with a quarter of the red onion. Squeeze one of

the lime segments generously over the vegetables.

4. Place a salmon fillet on top of the vegetables. Brush the salmon generously with the soy sauce

mixture and top with 1 teaspoon sesame seeds.

5. Fold the empty side of the parchment over the salmon and then fold the two edges inward

toward the salmon, making several creases to fully seal the package.

6. Repeat with the remaining parchment and ingredients. Transfer the prepared packets to a

baking sheet and bake until the salmon is fully cooked, 16 to 18 minutes.

7. To serve, remove the fish and veggies from the packets and transfer to plates, or cut slits in

the top of the parchment and serve in the paper. Serve immediately.

WOCC will again host a health fair this year. OBI will be here for blood donations, the Car-

ing Van will give immunizations for children 18 months to 18 years, and Walgreens will give

flu vaccines. There will be approximately 25 health/wellness organizations here to benefit

our congregation and the surrounding community. You can help in promoting the health

fair by telling friends and neighbors.

Putnam City West Breakfast

“Once again, the summer school break is ending, and school will begin very soon in the Putnam City District. A tradition we have here at Western Oaks Christian Church is serving a breakfast to PC West High School teachers on their first day back before school begins. This year. The breakfast is August 16th, at 7:15 am. We serve breakfast casseroles, fruit, juice, coffee and water. We also serve up giant sized portions of support and hospitality! Please contact Pat Brown, 405-787-2416 or 405-833-2811 or [email protected], and let her know if you can bring a breakfast casserole, help set up, help serve, help clean up, and/or just show up at PC West to show your support. She can give you the details. Please help us to show our support to the teachers of PC West High School!”

Disciples Women had a great initial meeting on Thursday!!! The

group decided to make plastic sack mats as our mission project. The

mats, which will help protect bedding from the ground, will be given

to Homeless Alliance to distribute to those in need. In order to

make more mats, the women need plastic shopping bags. You can

leave bags in the office or give them to Julia. Thanks for your help.

WOCC WHIZ KIDS NEEDS YOUR HELP!

It’s again time to begin plans for our Whiz Kids program with Western Oaks Elementary School!

We are in DESPERATE need of tutors, administrative assistance, and helpers! This will be our third year

for this awesome program, and I hope we can continue for the coming 2017-2018 school year. PLEASE

prayerfully think about volunteering! I promise that you will be doing a GREAT service to these children

and you will feel honored and proud for what you give to the kids who REALLY need our help learning to

read, sharpening their manners and how to feel self-fulfilled! We meet every Monday (except when

school is out) from 3:00-5:15pm beginning in September and ending in May. Please spread the word to

your family and friends outside of our church! We need anyone who is available to help! A meeting will

be scheduled in late August for all volunteers to discuss our plans for the year. Please contact Cathy Rou-

ton, 405-641-4567 if you are willing to volunteer! Thank you for your consideration and participation!!!

ATTENTION CWF MEMBERS – September is fast approaching. Our first business/

luncheon meeting will be Tuesday, September 12 at 10am. Our speaker for the

meeting will be from Citizens Caring for Children, the organization that receives the

quilts we make. They will share with us the services they provide to the community

and how many children they presently serve each month. Invite a friend to attend

with you that day. We also would love to have some fresh faces at our Tuesday

morning meetings. You do NOT need to be a seamstress to work. You can mark

squares for cutting, cut squares for the quilt tops, tie quilt blocks (using needle and

embroidery floss ), or pour a cup of coffee or tea and visit for a while.

Thanks to Joshua Mars

and Edward for spending

a summer morning paint-

ing railing on the West

Side of the church! Now

the entrance to the office

is more inviting.

It was such a pleasure for me to be able to give the sermon on July 16, our date for Refugee Sunday. During the ser-

mon, I mentioned a few of the many efforts of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on behalf of refugees around

the world. In case you would like to look at some of the resources further and you have access to a computer, here are

some sites that might be helpful.

Disciples Home Ministries has a division called Refugee & Immigration Ministries, which identifies issues and helps

Disciples to how they can participate with the larger church to advocate for refugees and immigrants.

https://www.discipleshomemissions.org/missions-advocacy/refugee-immigration-ministries/whats-new/

Global Ministries is a partnership of the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The

“Child and Elder Sponsorship Program” I mentioned supports lots of groups, including Tibetan refugees in India.

http://www.globalministries.org/child_sponsorship

And, finally, if you would like the .pdf for the educational resource for kids about the Syrian refugee experience, send

me an email at [email protected], and I will get it to you.

How quickly things get busy!

I had some issues with not only email last week but also my calendar which was connected to the email. The nice thing about

such a problem was that I didn’t have countless emails to read through and also didn’t appear to have any appointments for a

week. The problem was, I didn’t get the emails I should have and didn’t see any appointments on my calendar! However, once

all that was fixed and I started looking at my calendar and realized that with school starting back up several other things are

popping up on the calendar as well as some new opportunities for us. In September we are doing an all Church retreat for long

range planning (see more info below), Gavin Griffin and Natalie Wicklund are getting married, we are going to do a dinner for

the Putnum City West Football team, we have the annual Health Fair, on September 12 we have the Neighbor’s night out event,

and on top of that I agreed to write an article for Homiletics, a journal on preaching due September 15th. There are so many

ways for you to be involved in the life of the church this month and reach our com-

munity. I hope that you will be involved in getting word out to the community and

continue to share God’s love with our neighbors.

Shalom,

Daniel

All Church Retreat

On September 10th we want you, yes you to attend after church that afternoon. We will have a lunch and then start a discussion

about the church. We need to take a look at where we are today and where do we see ourselves in 5-10 years? In the past cou-

ple of years I have heard story after story about churches diminishing in membership to the point that they close their doors and

sell their buildings or they join other congregations. Sometimes this happens when a church lives in the moment and forgets to

plan for the future and their purpose as a church. Whatever the reason, we need to begin some long range planning but we

want feedback from everyone, not a select few. So what are we going to do at this meeting? We are going to hear a brief mes-

sage on church growth but primarily we are going to have a table set up for each committee in Schwind Hall. At each of these

tables there will be information about the committee and a place if anyone wants to voice an interest in being a part of the com-

mittee. But then there will also be a large sheet of butcher paper where everyone will have the opportunity to write down what

they would like to see happen within that committee. Feel free to dream big, I know I will be writing on property new floor cov-

ering everywhere there are unsightly seams pulling apart. Then we can go through some of these ideas as a collective whole.

This gives us all the opportunity to really see some new ideas and communicate with one another possibilities or challenges

faced in accomplishing some ideas. This may lead to a new capital campaign, but it is my goal

that we derive a clear purpose for where we will be and what we will look like in 5-10 years so

that we can continue to thrive and grow in our relationship with God and in service to our com-

munity at Western Oaks Christian Church.

Please plan to attend Sunday Sept. 10th
