School’s back and so is football! The baseball playoffs are approaching and the leaves are trying to decide what to do. The corn says it’s time to be cut, and the deer are about to rut... the doves are flittering about and it’s time to hunt. September has always been a time of transition and harvest. The seasons are changing and nature is preparing for what is to come. The crops have been growing all summer. Summer vegetables are nearly gone while the cupboards and freezers are nearly full. Not too long ago when it was harvest time, the children would be excused from school to assist in the harvest of fields. Everyone was necessary to get the tobacco pulled, strung, and put in the barn for curing. Many years ago, Jesus said to open our eyes... “Look. The fields are white ready for the harvest.” As he looked at the fields, the picture that he saw was symbolic of the world of humanity that had sewn seed of depravity and sinfulness. It was in need of a transition of life. Although the population of the world has drastically changed, the world’s problems haven’t changed a whole lot in the last couple thousand years. Even today there is a great need for a harvest. The next several weeks around Oakland we will have several “harvest events.” Please be ready to encourage your friends and family to participate with us in our Revival-- “Beyond The Box” - September 9-12 with a BBQ lunch on Sunday the 12th; Field Day of the Past, September 21-23; Our Consignment Sale Ministry Event, October 4-6; Fall Festival, October 13; and our Trunk or Treat on October 27. During each of these events we will have folks coming to us. I challenge you to engage in spiritual conversation with the desire to introduce folks to our Savior. God is calling us to Gather in Worship; Grow in our Discipleship; Give of our Time, Talents, and Treasures; and, Go into all the world with God’s redemptive message of Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness. Let’s open our eyes in this season of transition and be ready to meet the needs of those around us.
It’s a joy to serve Jesus as your pastor... Rev Kev

NOTE OF THANKS to the Children’s Consignment Sale Ministry (CCSM) Team: Thank you so much for the donation of books. I was able to give every child that came to the Welcome Back Night books to take home and read. It was wonderful to see their faces light up when they realized that not only was the book theirs to keep, but that they did not have to bring it back like they do for the library books. The fact that the books did not cost them or their parents anything, except for the time to find a book that the children liked, was an added benefit. Again, thank you for this blessing. NOTES, MISSION OPPORTUNTIES and ANNOUNCEMENTS - continued
Have You Ever Asked - “Why Me, God?” Eli Tiller was born perfectly healthy. On January 9, 2003, at three-years-old, Eli pushed out the protective
screen of his second-story playroom window at his home in Powhatan, Virginia. He fell thirteen feet,
head-first to the asphalt driveway below. His mother discovered him moments later unconscious,
bleeding and barely breathing. He was med-flighted to a university hospital where he remained
comatose for three weeks as his life hung in the balance. Through twelve weeks of inpatient treatment
and many years of outpatient and intensive home-based therapy, his road to recovery continues today.
Come and listen as Eli’s father shares their story and addresses tough questions that we all ask when life
doesn’t go according to our plans. You will also meet Eli’s mother and hear Eli sing words that you will
never forget!
Come Hear Their Story and BRING A FRIEND!!

Excerpts from
News from the WMU, Goshen Baptist Association, & Virginia Baptist
The annual offering for Virginia missions was named for Alma
Hunt (1909-2008), a native Virginian who was known
worldwide for her missions service and her unswerving
dedication to the cause of Christ. Churches and individuals may
contribute at any time.
The offering provides funding for all WMUV missions and ministries and makes possible other special
ministries, outreach projects, and initiatives not funded through regular streams of giving (but uniquely
connected to Virginia Baptists).
Since 1976, this offering has been a joint venture of Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and
the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) and Virginia Baptist Mission Board (VBMB).
The annual goal and allocation of funds are directed by a committee composed of equal representation
from the WMUV Board of Trustees and the BGAV Executive Board.
When you give to the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions, you are
equipping those who seek to share with others how God has set them
free to live and serve.
Goal for Oakland--$500

URGENT: mops, brooms, dustpans, small kitchenettes, dressers, TWIN, FULL,
Queen mattresses (separates or sets – we’ll match), bed frames, pots and pans, electric stoves, washing
machines, refrigerators, good vehicles, etc. Please make sure all donations work properly and are clean.
We also NEED VOLUNTEERS for pick-ups and deliveries, and to help sort Tues. or Wed. mornings or
another day by appointment. REMINDER: Requests should come from the church to help meet the needs
in the community in the name of Jesus. Thus our motto “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” - meeting physical
needs, developing trust through relationships and ministering spiritually. PLEASE make sure to FOLLOW
UP with families after they have been helped. This is key to making the most of opportunities to
minister spiritually to families in crisis.
