INTRODUCTION

The Tennessee Constitution sets forth under Article X, Section 1 as follows: “every person who shall be chosen or appointed to any office of trust under this constitution, or any law made in pursuance thereof, shall, before entering on the duties thereof, take an oath to support the constitution of this state, and of the United States, and an oath of office.” Tennessee Code Annotated Section 8-18-107 provides for the administration of oaths of office. Tennessee Code Annotated Section 8-18-108 sets forth the requirement that the filing of oaths of state and judicial officers “shall ... be filed ... in the office of the Secretary of State.” The collection of oaths of office contain a series of oaths of office of public officers for the period from 1972 - 1994. The oaths are arraigned alphabetically by the public office. This period of Tennessee history embraces the administration of Governors Winfield Dunn, Ray Blanton, Lamar Alexander, and Ned Ray McWherter. After filming, the original documents were destroyed according to State of Tennessee Records Disposition Authorization number 1718.

INTRODUCTION Record Group 144, Addition, Oaths of Office, 1969-2000, contains an addition to oaths that were processed and microfilmed in 1997. The original oaths span the years 1971-1994. This arrangement is alphabetical and the original order was maintained. Boxes 1 through 7 include the oaths of various regulatory board and commission members. Box 8 and 9 include the oaths of office and bond information, plus terminations, for railroad policemen. The Tennessee Acts of 1969 empowers the Governor, upon application by the railroad, to commission applicants to be railroad policemen. Before entering into the performance of his duties, every policeman must enter into a surety bond in the sum of $1000, payable to the State of Tennessee. A copy of the commission is filed with the Secretary of State. Railroad policemen have the authority to make arrests under the same conditions that apply to deputy sheriffs or other peace officers and by law can make arrests for violation of the law on a company's property. When a company no longer requires the services of a policeman so appointed, they file a notice to that effect with the Secretary of State. These records have been microfilmed and the originals disposed of according to RDA #1718. There are no restrictions on the use of these records.
