Page 1: Obfuscatory writing

“Sedulously eschew obfuscatory hyperverbosity or prolixity.”

OBFUSCATORY SENTENCES - Focus: recognizing lack of content: Ideally, if you can purposely write material without content, you can better recognize it when you are doing it just to add length to an assignment, or when it is found in other writing. The following is an example of obfuscatory writing:

Hopefully zircons which are used in place of diamonds will not become the

medium of exchange in such faraway places such as Zanzibar and Boleopolis

because Renfrew Wright hypothesized that the devour effect would render

entirely futile the exportation of poleological edifices which are rested solely upon

the framework of outmoded mutual reciprocity.

Analyze the above sentence and discuss its meaning. Obviously, the sentence

doesn't mean anything; it is obfuscatory. As a writer, your mind remembers word

patterns, but does not automatically organize content. The trick is to “keep the

style, but surrender the sense.”

Write 2 of your own obfuscatory sentences. Remember, when read, they need to “sound” as if you are relating meaningful content.
