Master of Science in

Chemical and Materials Engineering

The profile of Process Technology aims at training engineers in process and biotechnology (e.g. inorganic bulk chemistry, petrochemical and polymer science, pharmaceutical science, food industry, extractive metallurgy, recycling). They can function both in production units (to operate and optimize production facilities) and in engineering groups (to develop new production units). Also in the environmental sector, these engineers are trained to identify, solve and avoid environmental problems (waste management, water, air and soil pollution). The integrated insights with materials’ technology give these engineers a unique combination of knowledge and skills enabling them to func t ion mos t e f f i c i en t l y and multidisciplinary.

The profile of Materials Science aims at training engineers in a broad field of materials and materials technology. These engineers can function both in production and in development sectors for the various types of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics and composites). They can (i) determine and modify the properties of materials tailored for the aspired applications; (ii) form and process materials into semi or full end products; (iii) develop environmentally friendly and safe production processes of materials; (iv) optimally integrate materials with other disciplines. Knowing the chemical build-up and nature of the materials results in a unique insight into the l ink between composition, production and functionality.

ObjectivesThe training to Master of Science in Chemical and Materials Engineering has as a general aim to educate and form skilled scientific engineers who can bring an added value to all fields and facets of our society.

These scientific engineers play a unique role in the context of sustainable development, where they must handle in a responsible and mindful way resources, energy and the environment in the ‘responsible care charter’ of the chemical industry. They are prepared for an international career with English as governing language.

A more specific aim of this master training is to form engineers who have the skills to face the wishes of the modern technological employment field, in particular related to process, chemical and environmental technology and to material science.

A Master of Science in Chemical and Materials Engineering can develop, execute and manage projects on these themes, with integrated and dedicated insight and attention for the interactions between the chemistry and the materials’ technology.

The Master of Science in Chemical and Materials Engineering program (120 ECTS) consists of two profiles:

‣ Process Technology, and‣ Materials Science.

Brussels Faculty of Engineering, BRUFACE is a joint initiative of the two universities in the center of Brussels. The Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel jointly offer an English taught Master of Science program in Chemical and Materials Engineering.
