The NH-4 is a project of national importance and strategic value and a basic facility for the general public of these Islands. To provide safe passage and carriageway of automobiles passing through the NH-4, NHIDCL is incorporating new techniques for slope stabilization in hilly areas. Stabilising the slope on the cut section of the road passing through mountains and hilly areas is a major challenge which confronts the road maintenance and construction agencies. Though the Andaman Islands do not have high mountains but the rolling terrain on ATR and some other portion of hilly areas require slope stabilization and regular maintenance, to ensure smooth passage through NH-4. Heavy rainfall and narrow width of formation available in the stretches passing through hillocks and dense forest further aggravates the problem of slope maintenance demanding special attention and precaution while constructing breast wall (a retaining wall built to hold back a bank of earth) and retaining walls to prevent landslides from eroding the formation width. This technology after vegetation allows stabilization ofeven steep slope with faces upto 70 degree-80 degree. Thetechnique and the vegetation together prevent the washout of the soil and provide stability to the slopes. Hydroseeding is also resorted to after the end of the construction. The slopes stabilized with this technique, is helping inmaintaining stability of slopes on NH-4 as also enhancingthe scenic beauty of the road in these stretches, a pressrelease from GM, (Project), NHIDCL said.
