Hughey & Phillips Obstruction Lighting Shines Brighter.
About Hughey & PhillipsFor more than 75 years, hughey & Phillips, LLc products have found their place atop some
of the world’s most monumental architectural achievements. At hughey & Phillips, we make
a complete line of cost-effective obstruction lighting and control solutions that are proven to
be highly efficient and reliable with improved maintainability and a longer operational life.
As either stand-alone fixtures or as part of an integrated system, hughey & Phillips’ low,
medium, and high intensity lighting solutions provide illumination for radio and television
transmission towers, communications and microwave antennas, wind turbines, grain
elevators, buildings, smokestacks, bridges, and other obstructions to aerial navigation as
specified by the FAA, Fcc, icAo, DgAc of Mexico and transport canada.
Advancements in LED-based obstruction lighting technologies have resulted in lighting
fixtures that extend our beacon service life up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs
with lower power consumption. Additionally, our strobes use unique parabolic reflectors/
linear strobetubes optics and integrated flashhead blocking strips to minimize ground scatter
light for more community friendly lighting systems.
APPLICATIONSAll low intensity lights are available as single or double lights. the low intensity and medium
intensity lighting are used to mark air traffic obstructions. Different lights are used for different
specific applications, all-round illuminated obstruction lights with a light intensity of 10 cd
(candela) or 32 cd, flashing medium intensity lights in red or white with 2,000 cd or 20,000
cd and even high-intensity lights in white with up to 270,000 cd. in the united States the
use of specific lighting is defined in the FAA Advisory circular 70/7460-1 on the marking of
obstructions. the icAo (international civil Aviation organization) or Local Aviation Authority
governs for national regulations.

LEd STrOBE SYSTEM dESCrIPTIONthe horizon™ Dual Medium intensity LED Strobe System provides daytime white and
nighttime red lights in one unit. its self-contained power supply, with available gPS sync and
day/night sensor, simplifies wiring but also accepts external signals if desired. Advanced
features include advanced LED modules, cutting edge optics, individual LED monitoring/
bypass, and active lightning protection (patent pending). the unit also monitors the system
and provides a no or nc alarm contact upon any system failure.
APPLICATIONMedium intensity obstruction lighting systems are typically used on structures between 150’
(45m) and 500’ (150m) above ground level to provide aviation safety. the use of a medium
intensity white strobe during the daytime typically eliminates the need to paint the structure
with aviation orange and white stripes. the use of a red flashing beacon at night provides
a “community friendly” light. Hughey & Phillips medium intensity obstruction lights are
designed for lighting tall structures such as communication, television and radio towers, wind
turbines, smokestacks, cooling towers, tall buildings, catenary river crossings and bridges.

APPLICATIONMedium intensity obstruction lighting systems are typically used on structures between 150’
(45M) and 500’ (150M) above ground level to provide aviation safety. the use of a medium
intensity white strobe during the daytime typically eliminates the need to paint the structure
with aviation orange and white stripes. the use of a white flashing strobe at night provides an
‘eye catching’ light for low flying aviators. hughey & Phillips’ medium intensity obstruction
lights are designed for lighting tall structures such as communication, television and radio
towers, chimneys, cooling towers, tall buildings, catenary river crossings and bridges. this
light is compatible with Enhanced Flight Vision Systems that use iR energy emissions for
imaging, including nVg goggles.

Lightning SuRgE PRotEction DEVicE - LSPD-3000b
APPLICATIONLSPD devices are designed to protect all the FlashguardtM medium intensity strobe lighting
systems. the LSPD provides both a grounding solution and surge suppression for these
installations. the LSPD minimizes exposure to lightning damage through tower light wiring,
a lightning path that is commonly overlooked at communications sites. Without the use of
a LSPD, the interconnecting cable between the strobe’s flashhead and the power supply
provides a direct path that can allow damaging surges and transients to enter the shelter.
Sites with LSPDs installed have proven reliability. Sites with previous lightning problems
have recorded hundreds of lightning strikes after LSPD installation, with no damage to the
power supply or communication equipment.
INSTALLATIONLSPD units are installed between the flashhead and the power supply, providing protection
for both the lighting power supply and the telecommunications equipment installed at
the site. the LSPD units are supplied in a fiberglass nEMA 4X outdoor enclosure. the
protectors should be mounted on the tower above the ice bridge, before the cable turns
to enter the shelter. the first level of protection forces any induced voltage on the cable’s
shield to tower ground. All lines then pass through a surge suppression device before
continuing to the power supply. Detailed installation instructions are included with each
unit and should be adhered to for optimum protection.

SERiES 800 Photocontroller & beacon FlasherAPPLICATIONthe hughey & Phillips SERiES 800 Photocontroller and beacon Flasher provides a low cost,
high reliability solution to your lighting needs. this unalarmed system allows for the user to
add an inline system to their conduit run on the tower to controller the installed FAA beacons
and sidelights. the systems are factory calibrated and never need adjustment. Each system
utilizes surge and transient components and additional input line protection. normally
closed solid state relay configuration assures “Lights ON” condition even if the circuitry fails.
Red LED provides quick visual verification of field operation. And with its modular design, it
allows for quick field installation or retrofit to existing system if ever damaged.

APPLICATIONcombining technology with ease-of-use, hughey & Phillips’ third-generation gPS unit
combines flash synchronization and day-night sensing, and can be installed with just one
plug-in cable. this eliminates the need to mount a separate gPS unit, antenna, junction
box and wiring. Reliable, glitch-free operation is assured, using a crystal and the 50/60hz
power line as a zero-drift timing reference if the satellite signal is momentarily lost. And
two different flash modes are provided: fixed 40FPM or bit-switch selectable 24, 30, 40
or 60 FPM. the unit easily mounts with four screws to any surface, or pole mount using
the optional bracket. installation interconnect cable with quick connect plugs from gPS
unit to controller unit. LEDs indicate Power, Sync and gPS Lock status. With rugged metal
weatherproof and a battery-free design, hughey & Phillips’ gPS unit will provide years of
reliable service for your wind farm.

APPLICATIONthe Lightning Rod Assembly, LRb58L7510M, is designed for, and
is widely used on antenna towers associated with microwave relay
installations, high-definition broadcast towers, and other structures
prone to lightning strikes. Consisting of a 7/8” diameter rod and a
base mounting ring designed for ready installation under existing
medium intensity lighting fixtures with a 13-1/4” bolt hole pattern.
the A6A0302Ab Lightning Rod extends approximately two feet
above a standard 300mm code beacon in order to reduce the
probability that lightning will strike the lighting fixture. this will
minimize the possibility of damage to the lighting fixture and the
wiring from cloud to ground lightning strikes
EASE Of INSTALLATIONthe base mounting ring is designed for installation underneath the base
of a medium intensity lighting fixture with a 13-1/4” bolt hole pattern
without requiring additional holes in the tower. it is only necessary to
remove two of the four mounting bolts in order to install the ring under
the existing fixture. the other two beacon mounting bolts must be
loosened sufficiently to enable the installer to slide the lightning rod
mounting ring under the fixture. Slotted holes are provided in the base
mounting ring in order that the ring may be rotated to avoid interference
with the tower bolts or details. the mounting ring should be positioned
so that the rod is located at either side of the fixture in order to avoid
interference during opening of the fixture for maintenance.
GENErALthe base mounting ring is an aluminum casting, tapped to accept
the threaded rod. The rod is fabricated from 7/8” diameter material
threaded at one end for insertion into the mounting ring. the rod is
specially treated after fabrication to withstand weathering

LoAD bALAncE RESiStoRLb112120 – 120V, 1200WAPPLICATIONthe proper operation of electrical and electronic devices in general
is based on the availability of a relatively steady line voltage. this
condition is usually met without special precaution when the several
connected loads all consume a steady amount of power. if one
or more of the loads are of a varying or pulsating nature, then the
degree of steadiness of the line voltage (i.e. line voltage regulation)
will be dependent upon several factors – such as:
• The voltage regulation of the power service to the installation
(i.e. is the power service a firm-heavy source with adequate
capacity or a soft source at the end of a rural line).
• The size of the conductors between the power service and the
connected load. in many cases the size is not adequate for the
load, thus causing a large voltage drop.
• The size and voltage regulation of the standby generator.
• The relative size of the pulsating load as related to the total
connected load at site.
Also of prime importance is the relative sensitivity of the electronic
or radio equipment to the variations in the line voltage. the rules
of the Fcc and FAA require the 300mm beacon to flash on and
oFF at a rate between 20 and 40 flashes per minute. the beacon
normally uses two 620 watt lamps, thus a pulsating load of 1240
watts. Assuming a rate of 30 FPM, the 1240 watt load is on for
1-1/3 seconds and oFF for 2/3 seconds. Due to some inrush
current when the lamps are on, the effect on the line voltage may
be slightly more severe than flashing a resistive load of 1240 watts.
in some installations, the 1240 watt pulsating load may represent
a substantial portion of the total connected load. in these cases
the variations in the line voltage may be quite severe and some
corrective means must be considered. Fortunately, a relatively simple
and quite effective corrective means is available – a Load balance
Resistor. this consists of a 1200 watt resistive load which is switched
on as the beacon load is switched oFF and vice versa.
the hughey and Phillips Lb112120 and Lb212480 Load balance
Resistors (LbR) are designed for use with flashing beacons and will
minimize fluctuations in the beacon lighting load circuit, when used
is conjunction with our 9Lc Lighting controls. housed in a louvered
galvanized steel case, the LbR is suitable for outdoor installations.
the mounting brackets are movable in order to provide for mounting
against a vertical or horizontal surface. connection to the LbR is
made to a terminal strip mounted in a watertight cast junction box
which is tapped for ½” conduit or conduit fitting. The resistive
elements are of the strip type to provide uniform heat distribution
and are of steel-sheath construction with compressed insulation.
Siteguard® Wc-60 Wireless Monitoringhughey & Phillips’ Digital cellular communicators deliver secure,
reliable and complementary digital communications via the gSM
(global System for Mobile) network.
this groundbreaking communications solution offers full data
reporting and uploading/downloading with most hughey & Phillips
control panels. in addition, with onboard zone inputs and optional
dialer capture capability, we’re compatible with other manufacturers’
security panels as well. All signals are delivered to the Alarmnet
network control center, which routes the information to the
appropriate central station. the state-of-the-art Alarmnet network
control center is fully redundant and monitored 24/7. Alarmnet has
the ability to route messages using Alarmnet-i and
800 PLuS services, providing true redundancy and multi-path
message delivery.
Siteguard® monitoring services handles all of the time dependent
monitoring tasks without requiring your interaction: if a light “burns
out”, Hughey & Phillips’s system does the following:
• Dry contact output is read into the SiteGuard System
• SiteGuard initiates alarm call over a GSM wireless connection
• Alarm received at ProtectionNet Network operations center, with
operators providing around the clock, 365 days a year service
• ProtectionNet initiates an FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for any
appropriate lighting failure
• The client is notified of the failure via telephone, voicemail, pager,
fax or e-mail
• With the NOTAM in place, you can now work at your own schedule
to repair the light outage
• If after 14 days we have not heard from you, we will contact you to
determine the status of your tower
• We will file the NOTAM extension if necessary or we will remove
the notAM, with no additional work from you
Wind turbine Switchthe hughey & Phillips Wind turbine Switch (WtS)
is designed to operate the required obstruction
lighting from either the high voltage generated
by the wind turbine within the nacelle or from
the commercial power supplied at the base of
the tower. utilizing patent-pending technology,
the WtS senses the highest voltage present and
powers the obstruction lighting at either 120VAc
or 230VAc. the WtS harnesses the power of wind to power your
obstruction lighting requirements.
