SAVINGOBUT ® PETANQUE 2 automatically saves your progress. The game is saved at key moments, during which the system must not be turned off.

INTRODUCTIONWelcome to OBUT® PETANQUE 2, the pétanque simulation reference.

Pétanque is a sport played between two teams of one to three players. Each player has three boules (pétanque balls), except in the case of a team of three where the players only have two.

At the beginning of a game, the jack (sometimes called the bouchon or cochonnet), is thrown between 6 and 10 metres away, at a minimum of one metre from all obstacles or pitch edges. One player from the team that throws the jack then throws the fi rst boule and places it as close as possible to the jack.

The team with the closest boule to the jack “leads” the game. The team that does not have the lead therefore continues to throw until they are closest.

When a team has no more boules to throw, it is automatically the opposing team’s turn, and they fi nish the game.

When all of the boules have been thrown, the points are counted. The number of points won is equal to the number of boules that the winning team has placed nearer the jack than any of the opposing team’s boules.

The team that wins the end begins a new one by throwing the jack from where it was played in the previous end. The game fi nishes when the total number of points required for a team to win the game is reached.

Three are two ways to throw the boules, each adapted to different game strategies and having a specifi c purpose.

POINTING

To pointer, the player (pointer) crouches and the boule fl ies through the air in a big arc. This kind of shot lets the player place the boule as close as possible to the jack, and it doesn’t roll too much on landing.

SHOOTING

To shoot, the player (shooter) stays upright and the boule is thrown fast at a low trajectory through the air. This kind of shot strikes and clears one of your opponent’s boules, leaving your boule in its place. If your boule remains in the exact spot where your opponent’s boule was, you have done what is called a carreau.

To use the KINECT™ system, wave your hand at the main menu in order to activate the movement recognition.

MOVEMENT RECOGNITION WITH KINECT™

To move and select an object using the Kinect™, stretch your arm out and move the on-screen cursor with your hand open until you reach the object in question. Then keep your hand closed on it in order to select it. To cancel a selection, quickly move your left hand in front of the screen (in a sweeping motion).

If you need help during the game, you can activate the Kinect™ Guide by stretching out your left hand towards the lower left corner to open the menu. Then select the option “Kinect™ Guide”.

ON-SCREEN DISPLAYThere are 6 parts to the on-screen display:

1 Recap of boules played: Shows the player how many boules have been played and what order they are in with respect to the jack.

2 Points, teams and remaining boules display: Shows the number of points each team has scored, their respective names and the boules they have not played.

3 Character portrait: Portrait of the character who is currently playing. His/her level of concentration and any concentration bonuses or penalties are also displayed.

4 Throw and deviation power gauge: Lets the player measure the power of his/her throw. The small white slides on the gauge display the ideal throwing power. If you are playing with a traditional controller, you must keep the circle in the centre of the disk using the left stick in order to minimise the deviation of the throw.

5 Trajectory button: Shows the player if his/her throw (to the point) will be a lob, medium arc or slide.

6 In-game help and tips display area.

Remember that for KINECT™, an icon in the form of a hand appears in the top right of the screen to tell the player if he/she is testing his/her force or if his/her next movement will be a throw.

CONCENTRATION

In career mode, each player has a concentration gauge.

This is located below the player portrait. When it turns red, that player’s characteristics are gradually diminishing. The lower the level of concentration, the less the player will be able to perform.

To regain concentration points, a player must rest.

EXPERIENCE POINTS

In order to win championships against stronger and stronger teams in career mode, you must gain experience points. These are obtained by making amazing shots, at the end of a season, and by winning championships.

To spend the points you gain, go to your team’s headquarters and select the player whose characteristics you want to upgrade from among the four available (shooting skill, pointing skill, accuracy, power).

APPENDICESBOULES AND GAME PITCHES

Over the course of their careers players can unlock new boules with specifi c characteristics adapted to different pitches.

There are four types of boules:

• hard boules, ideal for regular pitches;

• very soft boules, ideal for irregular pitches but with a shorter life-span;

• semi-soft boules, good for all pitch types;

• a-one boules, of superior quality and ideal for all pitches

There are several types of pitch (sand, clay, fi ne gravel, coarse gravel) each with different coeffi cients of elasticity and friction. Players must therefore pay close attention to the type of pitch and choose their set of boules accordingly.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In OBUT® PETANQUE 2, Achievements can be unlocked as rewards for the players’ different accomplishments. To view your list of unlocked Achievements, go to your character’s “headquarters” in career mode.
