Be Bear Aware From Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks http://fwp.mt.gov Being bear-friendly in Montana is a commitment. It may mean sacrificing the opportunity to see a bear or take pictures of it—for the welfare of the bear. It means taking steps to prevent bears from finding sources of food on your property or when you are out camping. Once a bear is food-trained, it is often impossible to un-train them. That is why biologists so often say a fed bear is a dead bear. Your vigilance in keeping your residence and outdoor camps "Bear Friendly" can make all the difference in helping keep Montana's grizzly and black bears wild and free. Montana is a place where a bear is not viewed as entertainment but as a wild animal that shares its habitat with hu-mans. Please make the commitment now to share bear country in a way that is respectful of bears and of the safety of other humans. Don't Feed Bears! It is unlawful to intentionally, or to inadvertently feed bears. Those who do will be warned and possibly cited under this important Montana Law.

Going-to-the-Sun Road Closed in Logan Pass Area for Season

West Glacier, MT – West Glacier, MT - Due to continued winter weather, Glacier National Park has closed

the Going-to-the-Sun Road in the Logan Pass Area for the winter season.

This section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road closed on

September 29 due to a snowstorm that affected multi-

ple park areas. The road typically closes between Ava-

lanche Creek and Jackson Glacier Overlook on or be-

fore the third Monday in October, weather conditions

dependent. Subsequent sections close as winter pro-

gresses.

Road crews successfully reopened Many Glacier Road,

Chief Mountain Road, and the portion of the Going-to-

the-Sun Road between the foot of St. Mary Lake and

Jackson Glacier Overlook following the late Septem-

ber storm. The Two Medicine Road remained closed

due to significant snow. Crews were also unable to re-

open the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road

due to significant ice and ongoing freezing tempera-

tures.

Today’s snowstorm has temporarily re-closed Many

Glacier Road, Chief Mountain Road, and the east side

of the Going-to-the-Sun Road at Rising Sun. The

weather forecast for the remainder of the week calls

for rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.

Current road conditions, including closures, can be found on the park’s Road Status Webpage.

Crews are waiting for a more favorable weather win-

dow to remove 463 log railing pieces along the Going-

to-the-Sun Road in advance of significant seasonal al-

pine avalanches. The steel backed 8-foot log sections

require 12 bolts each to attach to the roadway, and

must be removed by hand. Failure to remove them

could result in significant avalanche damage to the

railings or roadway. The railing removal project typi-

cally takes two or three weeks, however unfavorable

conditions including ice coating the bolts and railings

can extend that timeframe or make removal impracti-

cal. Portions of the Howe Ridge Fire area continue to smoke, and are expected to do so into December. However, winter weather has allowed the park to lift some fire related closures, including popular trails like Rocky Point Trail, Johns Lake Trail, and the connector trail from Johns Lake to Avalanche Creek. Other areas remain closed, including North McDonald Road and associated trails, the Inside North Fork Road (not the Outside North Fork Road leading to Polebridge), and the Camas drainage area. Current trail status infor-mation can be found on the park’s Trail Status Webpage.

Montana Department of Transportation Proposes Erosion Mitigation Project North of Emigrant on U.S. Highway 89

EMIGRANT - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to stabilize a section of roadway embankment with riprap between the Yellowstone River and U.S. Highway 89 (US-89). The project area is located in Park County along US-89 about 1.2 miles north of Emigrant. The project begins at reference post 32.0 and extends north 0.3 miles, ending at reference post 32.3. Proposed work includes excavation of the highway embankment, installation of riprap and geotextile, fencing, recontouring the embankment, and finishing with topsoil and seeding. The work is not expected to significantly impact roadway travelers as the proposed work will occur off the paved surface adjacent to US-89. Travelers should expect slower speeds and a work zone during construction. The purpose of the project is to stabilize a section of embankment on US-89 prior to river erosion destabilizing the embankment and impeding traffic flow. The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in late winter or early spring of 2019, depending on com-pletion of all project development activities and availability of funding. No new right-of-way or utility reloca-tions will be needed. For more information, please contact Butte District Administrator Jeff Ebert at (406) 494-9625 or Project De-sign Engineer Tyrel Murfitt at (406) 444 6227. Members of the public may submit written comments to the Montana Department of Transportation Butte office at P.O. Box 3068, Butte, MT 59702-3068, or online at: mdt.mt.gov/mdt/comment_form.shtml Please note that your comments are for project UPN 9673000. Alternative accessible formats of this infor-mation will be provided upon request by contacting Alice Flesch, Human Resources and Occupational Safety Division, P.O. Box 201001, Helena, MT 59620; (406) 444-9229; TTY (800) 335-7592; fax (406) 444-7243; or e-mail to [email protected].
