Sensor TechnologyPIR (Passive Infrared) Passive Infrared (PIR) technology is the industry standard for detecting motion in a monitored space by detecting the difference in heat emitted from the human body and from the background space. PIR works well in smaller spaces with a high level of occupant movement. Relying on PIR for motion detection requires clean line of sight to the occupant. Due to the limitations of PIR and the need to have clear line of sight with the occupant, Dual Technology (DT) occupancy sensors have been developed using a number of secondary detection technologies.

UltrasonicUltrasonic technology measures the difference in frequency between the emitted and reflected waves. Ultrasonic technology does not require a direct line of sight to detect motion; however, it is sensitive to disruptions in airflow caused by HVAC systems, which can lead to false triggers.

MicrophonicMicrophonic technology is considered an improvement over ultrasonic technology and a reliable, robust secondary detection technology. Microphonic technology listens for sound rather than “looking” for movement thus not being confused by air movement or movement of plants and window blinds. This passive technology uses less power than ultrasonic sensors because it waits to hear sounds rather than actively sending out and receiving ultrasonic waves.

ADI-Voice® (Accurate Detection Intelligence)ADI-Voice is our proprietary microphonic technology that utilizes advanced digital signal processing for accurate detection of human vowel sounds from background noise. This minimizes the common causes of false triggers caused by non-human background noise such as HVAC systems, traffic, music, and vibrations.

ApplicationsLighting control systems suitable for a variety of applications.

Classroom or Open OfficeTo detect major and minor motion across a large area, dual technology recessed ceiling sensors (WOR series) provide the most complete coverage. For areas with plenty of natural light, adding photo sensors and dimming options can supplement natural lighting when needed while reducing electrical costs.

Hallway or StairwayFoot traffic can be frequent or infrequent depending on the time of day and traffic patterns. Ensure lights go on and stay on when needed by installing corner mount (WOW series) sensors that can be easily directed to specific areas or cover long narrow areas. Generally these are major motion areas so single technology sensors would work well.

Private OfficeTo identify occupancy in a small defined area, a wall switch with (WOS series) sensor can suffice, eliminating the need for running wire to a ceiling or corner mount sensor. Depending on the room layout and frequency of motion, a dual technology sensors may be the best solution to avoid false off actions.

Conference Rooms or LibraryTo detect major and minor motion across a large area that has obstructions such as partitions and room accessories, dual technology ceiling mounted sensors can provide the most complete coverage.

Lunch RoomsThese rooms are used intermittently throughout the day and as such are an easy place to save energy by turning the lights off when not occupied. When the room is occupied there tends to be less movement, but more conversations, so dual technology sensors would work well in this application.

  • 9

Reception AreasThese areas experience common patterns of traffic. Usually one person could be at the desk through the entire day but have little movement while having phone conversations. Diversa Dual Technology recessed ceiling (WOR series) sensors with ADI-Voice will pick up on human voices to avoid turning the lights off when the space is occupied.

Restroom (private)Private restrooms see infrequent use and have a clean line of sight across the small space. Diversa Single Technology wall switches (WOS series) work well in the application. The timer can be adjusted and 2-pole models can control lights and fans.

AtriumAtrium spaces can be large with very high ceilings, making the installation of sensor challenging. Corner mount (WOW series) sensors can be mounted around the perimeter of the area and directed to entry and walking spaces to monitor occupancy and control lights.

Restroom (partitioned)Public restroom will have partition walls and obstructed views to wall sensors, therefore a Dual Technology ceiling WOR series sensor would work well in these applications. 2-pole models are available to control lights and fans.

Storage Rooms/ClosetsThese types of spaces tend to be accessed infrequently, for short periods of time. People also find they may at times be carrying something in or out of the rooms so switching lights on and off can be a challenge. By using a PIR wall switch (WOS series), convenience and energy savings are instantly achieved.

  • 10

    Functionality

Smart SenseWhen occupancy is no longer detected and lights time out, PIR and ADI-Voice detection stay active for 30 seconds to immediately reactivate the lights through motion or voice. Once Smart Sense has expired, sensors would operate as configured (vacancy switches would require a manual light switch for switching lights ON; dual technology sensors would require motion to be detected by PIR to switch lights on and activate ADI-Voice).

Self-Adapting TechnologyDiversa sensors have an Auto Mode which learns vacancy tendencies rather than manually setting the vacancy timer for a predetermined period of time. This technology can save energy by understanding how long a time delay is needed.

Walk Through ModeLights are switched OFF after 3 minutes if occupancy notdetected after 30 seconds of initial detection (lights ON) saving energy by shortening the OFF delay when a quick entrance and exit occurs.

Sensor LinkSensor Link communication network for Diversa low voltage (24Vac) sensors. Sensor Link allows up to 10 sensors to communicate and coordinate their actions to act as a one cohesive zone. Sensor Link also provides additional control functions:•By using a low voltage diode pulse light switch connected

to the Sensor Link network, manual control over the lights can be achieved. Multi-level sequencing can be achieved by using 2-pole sensors.

•Maintained AC: Sensor control is disabled while AC is provided to the Sensor Link network (e.g. reception area remains lit during business hours, but after hours lights will only switch on when motion is detected - AC into Sensor Link network is managed through a time-of-day controller).

Restroom Mode (PIR 2-pole only)Allows pole delay timer to be synchronized for both pole or Offset (pole 2 OFF delay is extended 50% longer than pole 1 as set on time delay dial) e.g. - a room fan connected to pole 2 would stay on for 15 minutes if time delay for light (pole 1) set at 10 minutes.

Natural Daylight Mode (models with photo sensor)Natural light is used in a room until light level drops below Light Level dial set point. Lights are then activated to provide additional illumination.

Light Level Mode (models with photo sensor and dimming)Closed Loop Control of the light level. Lights come on and self-adjust to the light level set point when there is insufficient natural daylight.

Relay ControlDiversa low voltage sensors can control up to 4 relays through a diode pulse signal.
