• From January 2014 the School of Health Professions and the School of Nursing and Midwifery will merge into a new school

• The name is currently being decided through consultation with students and staff and will be announced in November 2013

• The merger will not impact on your course and will facilitate further inter-professional collaboration within the school

Occupational therapists believe that:

You are what you do (Pierce 2003)

You fill your life with activities that are meaningful and important to you in your environment and that this enhances your well-being and quality of life(ACE, 997, Creek 2002, Duncan2006, CAOT 2007)

Occupational Therapists workwith people who have experienced a physical or mental health condition that prevents them from doing the activities that are meaningful and important to them

• Identify how their particular circumstance has affected what they need to and want to do

• Help them adapt to their new circumstances so that they can fill their lives with activities that are important and has meaning for them

The intervention is designed by the occupational therapist using the everyday activities that the client has identified. Therefore the occupation in occupational therapy is both a therapeutic means and aim of therapy

(Pierce 2001, 2003)

Through therapeutic intervention an occupational therapist will work with each client individually to:

Just as a trained dancer uniquely appreciates the patterns of his or he own dance, an occupational therapist must be a true connoisseur of the complexity, richness and beauty of the occupations that surround him or her in daily life.

• 4 year part-time course• Attendance for 34 weeks a year• 1 - 2 days attendance on campus a week plus 5 placements

• Option to graduate with a PG diploma or MSc; both provide qualification recognised by the Health Professions Council

• Not many holidays!

• Students need to cover practice areas in; community, in-patient, mental health, physical and older people (1000 hours)

• New diverse placement in area where no current OT service

• Placements usually in region (SE).

• Final placement negotiated with tutors

• All students have practice educator in setting

• If you are working in a health or social care setting you need the support of your manager

• You should have the equivalent of at least 1 A level, gained within the last 5 years

• Reports on visits to two occupational therapy settings one in physical health and one mental health
