Directors Report It is with honour that I present this report to you. This was my first season as the Junior Activities Co-Ordinator and what a privilege it was to be able to see all the nippers and parents on Sundays at the beach learning new skills, making friends and having fun. We had over 160 nippers this season from U6 through to U14 and what a great bunch of kids to hang out with!
The one thing that really shines through with our club is the support that the kids show each other through the
junior program.
Nippers isn’t just about going down the beach to have some fun (which there was still plenty of), it’s a lifestyle
and an opportunity to develop our future lifesavers. Throughout the season, nippers were taught many skills
from our talented age managers and coaches – these are the skills that will stay with them for life – beach
safety, building on surf lifesaving skills and developing competition ability in a safe environment.
This season we followed the foundations of the junior program which has been developed in previous seasons
as well as introducing Seagull Nippers – an inclusion program for children with additional needs which was very
well received by all involved. Thank you to Shelley Smith & team!
Junior carnivals are a big part of nippers – carnivals can be a long and tiring day, but it is also very rewarding to
visit another beach and see what can be achieved – and not just in the medal count. Carnivals are an
opportunity to further support your club mates and to do your best. The sportsmanship which is always shown
by OB kids at carnivals is a credit to not only to the nippers themselves, but to their parents and families as well.
As a club, we were able to represent in all the events on offer, including all age board relay, all age sprint relay,
R&R, March Past, sprint relays, board relays, surf teams… not to mention all the individual events!! The club
came home with medals at all local carnivals – both teams and individual. Well done to everyone.
Competitors continued to improve in both their confidence and ability and many nippers were able to assist the
age group above by providing that extra person to make a team event.
As a club, we attended carnivals including:
U12-Open Beach Only Carnival
Newcastle Permanent Junior carnivals at Umina, Terrigal and Killcare and Junior Branch hosted by
Shelley Beach at Toowoon Bay
State Age championships at Swansea-Belmont
Newcastle Permanent Ironperson series at Wamberal, Soldiers Beach and North Avoca
Gardiner Ironperson at Wamberal
Nipper Nats at Manly
Open Branch Carnival at Macmasters Beach
Open State Championships at Swansea-Belmont
This season we also saw one of our Under 12 competitors, Ella Busch selected for the Central Coast Interbranch
team which is a huge achievement.
Aside from Sunday nippers, there were many training opportunities available to further develop skills, thanks
to:
Peter Lambeth and the R&R coaches have done an amazing job with the teams – the dedication that
you and the teams showed to training has certainly been shown with some amazing carnival results,
including having 2 teams in the Age State Championship final and medals at all local
carnivals. Peter also took his team to Maroubra earlier in the season to help showcase this traditional
event!
Beach coaches – Peter Quick, Jason Tucker, Darren Peters, Donna Hannell, Jason Smith - help from you
all was only a phone call away – and we have seen plenty of improvements in the kids who regularly
attended training and the age managers that were able to attend your training sessions on the beach
certainly picked up some tips to pass on!
Water Coaches – Shane Oakes, Matthew Smithers and Jarrod Mobberley - It was amazing to see kids
turning up for training in all sorts of weather and surf conditions and all your encouragement and
support that you all offered certainly helped with the level of confidence the kids developed over the
season.
A large amount of organisation goes into running the nipper program - the assistance provided by everyone
involved is truly appreciated and we wouldn’t be the club we are without your continued support.
Age Managers – Thank you for your dedication and commitment to your age groups, your continued
support is invaluable and the time that you commit to training and education the nippers is amazing –
without you we wouldn’t be training our future lifesavers!
Parent Helpers – from setting up & packing up Sunday nippers, recording attendance, cooking BBQs,
helping set up for carnivals, assisting the age managers, getting your kids to nippers, training & carnivals
– thank you.
Youth Group – Most of this amazing group of young adults finished nippers last season but still wanted
to be involved! Your amazing support with Sunday nippers and at training and for being great role
models for the nippers following behind you – it is truly appreciated, and we love having you all around.
Water Safety – Thank you for providing the safest environment possible.
Recorders – Barbara & Lorraine – Thank you for your continued support for point score.
Carnival Officials & Water Safety – Without you we wouldn’t be able to send our teams away to
carnivals – thank you for making it possible to field our teams.
Belinda Thompson – thank you for all your help & assistance over the season – from registration,
carnival entries, communication for nippers, presentation, all my crazy questions…
Rookie Co-Ordinator – Jason Smith – Thank you for making sure our rookies made it to all the rookie
events available - those kids certainly kept you busy.
OB Executive – Thank you for your continued support.
Mums, Dads & Carers – thank you for bringing your kids to nippers, training and carnivals – I know
sometimes we feel like we are a never-ending taxi service but the support and encouragement you
provide to your kids is invaluable!
I have enjoyed the season – and hope that you all have as well. I look forward to seeing you all next season,
please, if you have friends who would also like to be involved, please bring them along with you.
Surf Lifesaving offers so many opportunities – if you would like to be more involved, I encourage you to speak
to other club members and find out what is available, there is something for everyone!
Finally, thank you to my family & village.
See you all next season
Kylie Falconer
Under 6
This year I had my first opportunity to manage a very keen and enthusiastic group of Under 6 Nippers. First off, a big thank-you to all the seasoned Age Managers that made themselves available for the many
questions I had and helping hands I needed. A particular thank-you to Miss Kate and Mr Chris who offered
their time and knowledge throughout the season, the team was very lucky to have you. We had the
opportunity this year to bring together the Under 6’s and 7’s on most Sundays and I am very grateful to
Nigel, our esteemed Under 7’s coach for helping make this happen.
We saw many new faces and families this year joining our Beach Club and it was also nice to see all the
returning Nippers moving up to Under 7’s. I was so happy to see all the parents really getting involved and
having fun volunteering as a line or holding hoops or helping all the kids with their boogie boards. I’m
looking forward to getting to know you all better next season!
It was great that we had pretty decent weather this year and we were really able to achieve all of our big
objectives for the season and have a lot of fun doing it. My main focus for this age group was beach/surf
education and awareness as well as introducing them to the many beach sport activities that the older age
groups participate in. It was nice to spend time with the Under 7 group as well as we benefitted from their
experience.
Some of the goals we achieved were:
Basic beach safety and what lifesavers do
Learning where and when it is safe to swim ie: between the flags
Learning basic flag signals - how to let someone know you need help, how to direct someone in the
water
Safe and not safe marine and beach life
How to look after our beach and our environment
Negotiating the different types of waves and learning to Dolphin and Rocket in the water
Lots of fun games and team activities as we all learned to work together
We did spend a considerable amount of time on the beach, as the Under 6’s do, and the kids took to
sprinting and flags enthusiastically giving it their best. I think our favourite part on the beach…besides
building sandcastles… was our games of Red light Green light, Duck Duck Goose and What’s the Time
Mr.Wolf. All of our running and practicing really paid off as everyone improved dramatically at flags and
relays. I think there will be a few keen competitors in the future.
Right from the very beginning there was a real eagerness to get in the water and most of these fearless
kids jumped straight in listening and practicing their wades, dolphin dives and rocket launches with
confidence. It was nice to watch the kids work as a team encouraging each other and sharing their noodles
and boards. The improvement in confidence and capability from the start of the year to the finish was
really fun to watch.
I’m so very proud of all the Under 6’s and their parents for putting in a great effort and making it down to
the beach each Sunday with smiles on their faces… even when the weather was a bit off! I’m really looking
forward to following this beautiful group of kids up to Under 7’s next season and if there are any parents
that would like to help me as an assistant Age Manager I would certainly welcome the help.
Another really big thanks again to everyone that pitched in to help make this season lots of fun for all!
Can’t wait to see you next season!
Jenn Couper
Under 7
It gives me great pleasure to present this report. This was my first year as an age manager, and I freely admit that I had no idea what I was getting myself
into. I joined the movement at 16 and never had the benefit of doing nippers, so this season has been an
eye-opener. I am much more comfortable with technical aspects of body surfing and baton handovers than
the rules of “duck duck goose” or the “traffic light” game.
As a result of my complete inexperience with children Jenn Couper and I decided to keep the U6’s & 7’s
combined as they had been for the last couple of seasons with Kylie Edwards. This worked really well
because Jenn was able to keep the kids focused and amused on land, while I felt I could contribute more in
the water.
I had 2 goals this year - lifesaving and competition
I primarily wanted the kids to feel comfortable & safely have fun in the water and also give them an idea
about what to expect at carnivals next year.
This included many visits to the lifesavers on patrol, examining aquatic creatures, danger signals, being sun
smart/well hydrated and expanding on their knowledge of “rockets and dolphins” (duck diving and body
surfing). We had heaps of fun, especially high fiving the parents around the wading course and beating the
U6’s at the tug-o-war. I also tried to show them the basics of relay baton handovers and flag racing starts
so they wouldn’t be overawed at their first carnivals when they move up to the U8’s.
I really hope that the kids had fun and learnt something. It would be great if we all come back next year
because I can see the makings of some exceptional lifesavers amongst them and I would love to play a part
in their development.
Thanks Kylie Falconer for giving me the opportunity to contribute, Jenn Couper for shouldering more than
her fair share of the load, Kate Mortimore for being the best assistant age manager ever, Chris Styant for
his advice and his strong back lugging the big bag down the beach, Kylie Edwards for all the hard work she
did last year and all the parents who helped along the way.
Yours in surfing
Nigel Fitzgibbon
Under 8 Lazy Sunday mornings became a thing of the past as we took on this energetic age group for the season. We were lucky to retain the majority of the under 7s from 2016/17 season and also had quite a few kids joining us for the first time, which was fantastic. Since this was the first year of competition in carnivals, we focused a lot on technique for flags, beach relay and the wade. Our training included many fun games that allowed for skill development without the kids actually realising this. It was very rewarding as age managers to see their improvement from week to week, whether or not they were competitive at carnivals.
A smaller group from the under 8s competed at the Umina, Terrigal, Killcare and Branch (Toowoon Bay)
carnivals. We had some excellent results at each carnival. For all carnivals excluding Branch, the kids raced
in heats only, and were awarded ribbons based on heat results. It was great to see the determination on
their faces when they were competing in team events, and they also had fun forming composite teams
with kids from other clubs… there may have even been a few sneaky club cap changes going on.
In the last few weeks of the season the kids got on the foam nipper boards in readiness for next season,
and we also went for some team swims a little further out than the normal wade depth to build confidence
for the surf race next season. We would like to thank the kids for an awesome season and for keeping us
entertained! Thank you also to the parents who helped out with the wade races, both on the warm days
and the ridiculously cold days! We would also like to thank the kids and parents who helped out with our
rostered duties. It is no secret that the under 8s put on the best feed at Bottles this season with our
Mexican fiesta!

Under 9
Wow, what a great year.
It was great to see so many returning faces and it was also great to see that we had some new faces as well.
This season we spent time improving on skills which we started to learn last season, sprints and sprint relays were a hit, as was boards and flags, with our main focus of having fun, working as a team and learning new skills.
This season we continued on local carnival circuit. We participated in 4 local carnivals; Umina, Terrigal, Killcare and Branch championships at Shelly Beach (well Toowoon Bay). We also made our debut at State this year would like to congratulate Ebony and Julia on the great effort they showed in the events they competed in. Although the carnivals were early starts and long days we always had a smile on our faces and our determined effort to give it a go. Well done to our carnival competitors, Kiara, Luca, Zef, Julia, Georgia, Ellie, Ebony, and Leilani. To all those who didn’t attend a carnival, I urge you to give it a shot next season!
We continued in our beach safety and education this year with the annual education night and sleepover. On the night we learnt more on how to identify a rip current, basic first aid and (another) grand tour of our clubhouse, followed by pizzas and movies. I think the kids had a great night (as well as the brave parents who also stayed).
On the beach, we kept up learn hand and flag signals as well as refreshing our learning on beach
As we sign off for another season, we would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone who has assisted this season – to the parents and caregivers for bringing your child each week and assisting with activities on the beach, water safety, carnival officials and club members, we couldn’t have done it without you.
Take care and see you next season!
Gavin Falconer
Under 10 I have enjoyed my time as the Under 10s age manager this season. I need to thank all my parents who have been terrific at stepping up and helping out when required as well as being there for their children. On a weekly basis, I have seen improvements in the children’s skills and confidence, in and out of the water. At competition level, we had mixed results. The standouts included Emmerson achieving gold in flags, Isabel Hood making her first ever board final, Zara for making the semis in swim, as well as Jack making it through to the flags final at Nipper Nats and Zara making it to the semis at state for R&R. Hope to see you all again next season
Tanya
Under 11 As this season comes to a close I find myself looking back through carnival results and thinking about Sunday nippers at home. Doing this I realise it has been a very successful season. Our numbers grew, particularly our girls. Initially this season we had even numbers of girls and boys, the late inclusion of Noah edged the boys in front by 1, but the growth in girl numbers was awesome to see. At carnivals we usually had about 6-7 boys and 2 girls, with Marie joining Olivia and Lexi at the branch carnival and competing very well. Marie finished 5th in the sprint final and 12th in the flag final. Lexis best result of the year came at this same carnival finishing 7th in the flags final. Olivia was our only girl to compete in the water, she was amazing, always putting in 100% effort and achieving some fantastic results. I would love to see more girls come along to carnivals. The team events can be a great environment for all our competitors. Our boys also improved their carnival results this year, Ryan kicked the year off with a silver in flags, he continued to excel with very good results in flags and sprint all season. Will also picked up silver and bronze medals in sprint races throughout the season along with good performances in flags. Harry was again an all round competitor, not only swimming but achieving good results on the beach. Harry capped it off with a bronze medal at branch in the 1k run. Jacob had a break out season, regularly winning medals for swim board and iron person events, the highlight being a gold medal in the board at Killcare. These 4 boys combined to win a bronze medal in the swim teams at this same carnival. Jono came along this year and was a great competitor, always ready to back up if needed, but also became a regular in the board relay, Jono was another that always gave maximum effort and never gave up, taking on some tough race conditions that others would not. Dylan, Logan and Hugo also attended carnivals. Their highlights include Hugo 7th in flags final at branch, Dylan achieving a personal goal in flags at state and Logan being our last man standing at state flags. Our final carnival event this year was the state carnival. I must admit being a little disappointed not to make a final or 2. We did have some good efforts with both Jacob and Olivia making quarter finals. Jacob won his board heat and Olivia second in her heat. Our mixed relay also ran well to win their heat but fell in the semi-final. I am still extremely proud of all the kids who attended because they put their all into what is a very unforgiving and competitive arena This is where next season comes into play. We grew this year and I am sure if we continue this pattern we can improve again next year. My goal is to continue a high standard locally and improve our chances at state level. We introduced a few new training tools this season and as our under 11's turn into under 12's I hope to continue improving training methods to assist all kids in growing and achieving. Our other competitors that did not attend carnivals did very well at Sunday nippers. They all completed swims, board races and other events in different conditions. The guts and determination shown by these kids inspires me to continue age managing. It is great to see kids complete something they are not sure of, scared of or have never attempted before. Awesome work under 11's. We now have to decide on awards, as you can see from above, it is not going to be easy. I hope you all enjoyed the season, I hope you all learnt and grew through experiences this season, and I hope to see you all again next year, along with any new friends you might be able to encourage to join us.
The more the merrier. Thanks for a great year boys and girls.
Matt and Donna
Under 12 Wow, that’s another season done and dusted. We lost some old faces but gained some new ones. Firstly, we would like to start by thanking the kids for their efforts and showing much determination during the season. This was not just at nippers and training but at carnivals too. We came away with for beach medals, three in flags and another in the sprint relay. There have been some big efforts and improvements by individuals this year, Ella’s Central Coast inter-branch team selection, Oliver & Mikaela’s Gardiner Ironperson endeavours, Grace C and Bronte’s weekly battle in the swim, Emma’s effort on the board, Grace W’s sprints and the improvements that the boys, Yillen, Michael & Daniel made in the water. There is a lot to build on for next season. Some other achievements during the year were Oliver’s amazing ability to be late to the swim so he can have a warm shower, Grace W and Ella’s uncanny ability to avoid the water, Yillen’s extraordinary ability to keep talking whilst he is swimming (not quite underwater), Grace C’s determined ability to get out of the swim at carnivals and Grace W’s pony club. We will see how these go next season. Next season is a big year and filled with excitement and responsibility as they step up to be Rookies. This will include new activities like raising of the flags, rookie camp and the rookie challenge. They will be well on the way to becoming fully fledged custodians of the beach. It’s been a pleasure looking after a great group of kids and watching them grow and achieve their goals. We look forward to seeing everybody back for their Rookie season. Lifesavers on patrol

Under 13
The Under 13 age group had 9 members this season and completed the Surf Smart 2. We are all so proud
of the way they handled it. All the Nippers have improved in all areas and the new ones really picked it up
quickly and had fun doing it.
This year we had 5 carnivals (including State at Swansea Belmont). We had four regular competitors that
gave it their all in everything they went in. Those competitors were Reiley Squires, Hayley Doyle, Mercedes
Newton & Bryce Mobberley. We only attended 4 carnivals as the rescheduled Killcare carnival clashed with
our volunteering patrolling up at Pacific Palms.
This year’s nipper races were a lot closer and there has been so much improvement in swimming and
board paddling, some days it is anyone’s race. Ella Winter and Fin Lacey are the biggest improvers. Our
newest nippers Ana Stecko, Alex Fashka and Daniel Fashka have been going to board training during the
week and look out next year when they are on the racing mals as the small boards are way too small
except for Mercedes.
This year Hayley & Reiley were involved with the Youth Development Program. Mercedes, Hayley, Reiley,
Finn & Bryce helped out with ducks for bucks and two nipper training sessions at Wet & Wild.
The State Carnival was at Swansea Belmont. We had 1 boy and 3 girls attend. Bryce, Mercedes, Hayley &
Reiley. We all stayed at the same park and lots of fun was had. At the beach we put in a great effort and we
can hold our heads high. Well done for putting in the effort.
All the children have improved so much in the water and the long swim is not an issue for anyone, they just
kept going around and around those cans. The board races are getting so close now and if we ever get
some swell it will be anybody’s race.
We had a great year and hope to see everyone again in the Under 14’s.
Thanks to Jarrod Mobberley & all the parents for all your help and support with the kids this season. It is
really appreciated especially at carnivals.
To all the kids we are so proud of you, Well Done!
Brett Newton
Under 14
Under 14 Nippers had 10 competitors this year.
This year was when they attempted to achieve their SRC. 7 made it, Zara Smithers, Mikaela Kelly, Jenna
Styant, Montanna Godbee, Harry Mellross, Shaun Turnbull and Jamie Cairns. We are all so proud of the
way they handled it.
This year we had 5 carnivals (including State at Swansea Belmont). We had four -five regular competitors
that gave it their all in everything they went in. Those competitors were Zara, Mikaela, Jenna, Jamie &
Shaun (at Terrigal). We only attended 4 carnivals as the rescheduled Killcare carnival clashed with our
volunteering patrolling up at Pacific Palms.
This year Zara & Jenna were involved with the Youth Development Program. Zara, Mikaela, Jenna & Jamie
helped out with ducks for bucks.
The State Carnival was at Swansea Belmont. We had 1 boy and 3 girls attend. Jamie, Zara, Mikaela &
Jenna. Some stayed at the same park and lots of fun was had. At the beach we put in a great effort and we
can hold our heads high. Well done for putting in the effort.
All the Under 14’s have shown that they will make great patrolling members and future role models for the
younger nippers.
We had a great year and hope to see everyone again in the Under 15’s.
Thanks to Jarrod Mobberley & all the parents for all your help and support with the kids this season. It is
really appreciated especially at carnivals.
To all the kids we are so proud of you, Well Done!

Thank-you to Mercedes and Mikaela who despite not being able to compete due to age restrictions assisted at 2 Person training, passing on their knowledge and expertise.
Congratulations to the 5 person team – finished on 12 points at Age State Championships - a personal best for the team!
Well done to our newest team OB Lions, Lexi Smithers and Zara Tucker, for gaining a 3rd place at Branch at their very first carnival as well as 5th place at State on 8 points – 1 point away from placing.
Our R&R Teams who attended both a training day at Ocean Beach in September and an R&R Education Day at Maroubra. At both, events our teams generously assisted new teams from other clubs and by sharing their knowledge were commended by the organisers.
A big THANK-YOU to our parents for getting the R&Rers to training and carnivals, also for assisting at carnivals in Marshalling and Organising the event: Jen, Salina, Kath, Brett, Cheryl, Matt, Chris, Natalie, Tim, Karen, May and Brad. Thanks also to our Judges: Kath Styant, Drew Hayes, Dennis Fitzroy and Grant Hayes for their continued support of this traditional Surf Life Saving Event.
Well done R&Rers. You were always ready to train and compete no matter how early the start was. You are always polite and keen. Your dedicated attitude will serve you well throughout your lives in whatever you wish to do.
Peter W. Lambeth
Ocean Beach Junior R&R Coach.
Rookies
This year saw 19 keen individuals part take in the rookie program. The program is for those in U13’s and
U14’s. The design of the program is to enable a smoother transition into patrol life after the nipper
program has concluded. The Rookie program itself includes patrols, gaining lifesaving awards as well as a
wide variety of branch run activities.
This year the Rookie program continued with many returning members as well as some new faces which
was great to see. Lots of great memories have been made as well as ideas and experiences being shared
through the group. The group as a whole have achieved the following:
- 7th in the rookie challenge
- 9 rookies at ducks for bucks
- 4 rookies selected for the SLSCC development camp
- 9 rookies at the Rookie disco
- 6 rookies at raising of the flags
- Over 1000 patrol hours and counting
Over the course of the season the following rookies participated in the following activities:
Rookie camp
On the 11th & 12th November, Zara, Jenna, Reiley & Hayley attended a camp along with rookies from other
clubs from Central Coast branch. Rookies took part in various activities that challenged them as well as
having the opportunity to meet fellow rookies!
Rookie Disco
Every year the rookies are invited to the rookie disco. Like the last few years the theme of Halloween and
the venue of North Avoca haven't change but it was good to see all the rookies dress up and participate in
a signing and dancing competition. This was my first year in not attending, however, heard very good
reports from the organisers about how our rookies represented Ocean Beach and themselves. Thanks to
Chloe, Zara, Katie, Ella, Mikayla, Mercedes, Reiley, Hayley,
Rookie Challenge
This year we saw six people put their hands up for challenge at Terrigal – Jenna, Zara, Hayley, Reiley, Shaun
& Mercedes. The day was very hot and dry and filled with seaweed. Despite a clear disadvantage from the
draw, our best board paddler was our runner, our best runner was a board paddler and that was only in
the first race. It was always going to be hard to win but the aim is all about having fun and participating
and that is exactly what we did. As a team, we walked away with hooded towel!
Ducks for Bucks
On Australia Day, Mikaela, Mercedes, Zara, Hayley, Reiley, Jenna, Jamie, Fin and Bryce all headed up to The
Entrance assist with SLSCC’s main fundraiser. These rookies walked around The Entrance CBD and sold over
100 tickets collectively. Their politeness and attitude was well documented.
SLSCC Rookie of the month
This season has seen two of our rookies achieve Rookie Of The Month. This recognition program is
organized at a branch and each month, clubs may nominate a rookie member for recognition. What makes
this hard is that I only have 50 words to describe the amazing achievements of the Rookies. This year have
had numerous rookies go beyond what is required and have been fortunate enough to have Hayley Doyle
(October) and Zara Smithers (November) selected by the Board of Member Services for Rookie of the
month! Great job girls!
Junior Lifesaver of the Year
This year bought about change in the JLOTY. Unlike previous years we had the privilege of having one male
and one female apply for the club. Both Jamie and Zara were put through their paces over the course of 3
weeks. This process would not have been achieved if it wasn’t for Alan Moffitt, Richard Grimmond, Robyn
Carr, Mackenzie Squires and Hayden Doyle. From the first practice Jamie and Zara undertook until their
final mock interview they grew and grew into very fine young Lifesaver and showed us why they inspire the
younger nippers.
I wish the best of luck to all the Rookies as you begin to move into the senior ranks!
See you all around the beach.
