add to the excitement and atmosphere of the race, it will also add a unique dimension to
this race when compared to any other surf ski events around the world. Your family and
supporters will be able to see how your race unfolds.
As wind direction is fundamental to a successful race, one of four courses will be selected to
present the competitors with at least 80% down-wind paddling. The final course will be
determined by the wind direction 24 hours prior to the race.
We hope that each course will generate optimal conditions with exhilarating swells that can

History and Location:
According to legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his
death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea. The story goes that Aegeus,
anxiously looking out from Sounion, despaired when he saw a black sail on his son Theseus's
ship, returning from Crete. This led him to believe that his son had been killed in his contest
with the dreaded Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull. The Minotaur was
confined by its owner, King Minos of Crete, in a specially designed labyrinth. Every year, the
Athenians were forced to send 7 men and 7 women to Minos as tribute. These youths were
placed in the labyrinth to be devoured by the Minotaur. Theseus had volunteered to go with
the third tribute and attempt to slay the beast. He had agreed with his father that if he
survived the contest, he would hoist a white sail. In fact, Theseus had overcome and slain
the Minotaur, but tragically had simply forgotten about the white sail

December 2012
Dec 8 - Cape Town, South Africa
Series C/B Race
Location: Cape Town South Africa
Start time: ?
Distance: 22km
Skis available: Most makes, check with your manufacturer.
Prize money: Min $5k
One of Cape Town’s or possibly the worlds most talked about Downwind is the Famous
Millers run. www.surfski.info This run starts at Millers point and at Fish Hoek beach. Millers
Point is roughly half way between Cape Point and Fish Hoek. The distance is 11Kms. When
the South East picks up and paddlers who want to experience a longer downwind then head
for Buffels, about 4 km's from Cape Point. The distance from Buffels to Fish Hoek is close to
22Km’s. The race will start at Buffels route past Millers and finish at Fish Hoek on a
prevailing SE wind. Should the NW blow then we will simply reverse the route.
There have been only a hand full of races between Buffels and Fish Hoek; this is part of our
local Surf Ski Series. The Race organiser will choose a best downwind route. We have had
occasions when the NW blows which are perfect for a Reverse Buffels.
Our Prevailing wind in December is typically a SE and can blow anything from 10 to 30
Knots. These winds with a running sea create the perfect route for a World Series race, this
all in the safety of False Bay
I would like to propose that the race takes place on the 8th December 2012. This is the day
before the Memorial Peter Creese Light House race (10Km) from Fish Hoek to the Roman
Rock Light house (off Simons town) and back. This is the last race of the Surf Skis Series
calendar and is the lead up to the Fenn Cape Point Challenge a 50 Km race around Cape
Point, arguably the world most challenging endurance race.
www.fenncapepointchallenge.com The total prize money for this year is R 80,000 just over
$10,000 US
The is to host a surf Ski carnival at Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club, with 3 Main race events in
1 week. This will start with the Last World Series race of the year followed by the Peter
Creese Light House then the following Saturday the Famous CPC.
Our local Surf Ski series has a race every Sunday between October and December, in both
Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, with the occasional race in East London. This will give our
internationals a true South African Paddling experience starting up the coast and working
their way down to Cape Town.
Fish Hoek boasts one of the world’s largest and strongest paddling communities across all
categories Dawid & Nikki Mocke current Series World Champions , along with younger
brother Jasper, Sean Rice, Tom Schilperoort, Graeme Solomon, Paul Marias and Peter &
Alexa Cole to name but a few, along with a strong contingent of Juniors
Cape Town is a top tourist destination with our Wines, Table Mountain, Cape Point and
