We strive to engage paleo-ecologists, climatologists, social scientists,
archaeologists, historians, ecologists, and biologists under the
unifying view of our oceans as social-ecological systems, wherein
people and the natural world are intrinsically coupled.
The Oceans Past Initiative (OPI) is a global network for
marine historical research. Our goal is to enhance
knowledge and understanding of how the diversity,
distribution and abundance of marine life in the world’s
oceans have changed over the long term to better
indicate future changes and possibilities.
OPI is connected with the COST Action Oceans Past Platform (2015-2018) that aims to
determine the socio-economic, political, cultural and ecological implications of human
impacts on marine life, and to develop historical descriptors and indicators for marine
and coastal management. Meetings to discuss the current research on the five OPP
Working Groups will be held in Sesimbra at May 19th 2017. More informations to
