OCEANSIDE SHUTTERBUG NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the newsletter of the Oceanside Photographers Club (OP). The OP meets on the first Wednesday of every month in the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre at 7:00 pm. Sometimes there is a computer program demonstration by a club member at 6:30 pm with the meeting proper following at 7:00 pm. The aim of the club is to promote learning, sharing and the enjoyment of photography in a convivial atmosphere. Membership is $24 per person per year (May to April incl.) and is open to anyone interested in photography. Guests are allowed to come to no more than two meetings for free after which they must pay a membership fee in order to continue attending. Election of officers is held at the annual general meeting on the first Wednesday of May each year.

A photographer from a well known national magazine was assigned to cover the fires at Yellowstone National Park. The magazine wanted to show some of the heroic work of the fire fighters as they battled the blaze. When the photographer arrived, he realized that the smoke was so thick that it would seriously impede or make it impossible for him to photograph anything from ground level. He requested permission to rent a plane and take photos from the air. His request was approved and arrangements were made. He was told to report to a nearby airport where a plane would be waiting for him. He arrived at the airport and saw a plane warming up near the gate. He jumped in with his bag and shouted, "Let's go!' The pilot swung the little plane into the wind, and within minutes they were in the air. The photographer said, "Fly over the park and make two or three low passes so I can take some pictures." "Why?" asked the pilot. "Because I am a photographer," he responded, "and photographers take photographs." The pilot was silent for a moment; finally he stammered, "You mean you're not the flight instructor?"

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face - the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited; and the wealth and confusion that man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man. - Edward Steichen Cover photo from “Adolescent” category - by Susan Lightburn

The Newsletter has changed its name.

Now that an OP web site has been created and the

newsletters placed on it, we have to be careful not to

use a copywrited name; “Shutterbug”

Sony Cyber-shot HX1 The Sony Cyber-shot HX1 is a powerful new point and shoot camera with an incredible spec list. Sony had the HX1 on display after it was announced at a press conference just before PMA 2009. The HX1 is yet another hybrid camera, which were very prevalent at this year’s PMA.At first blush, the HX1 looks like just another super zoom point and shoot camera. Dig a little deeper into the features though and you will find some unique and powerful specs. One of the biggest new features is the Sweep Panorama, which allows you to hand-hold the camera and pan from side to side. The HX1 captures a 7152 x 1080 panoramic image from a number of images captured and stitched in-camera.In addition to the Sweep Panorama, the HX1 is capable of capturing full-size 9.1 megapixel images at 10 frames per second. This is made possible by the mechanical shutter used by the HX1, which is a stark change from electronic shutters found on traditional point and shoot cameras. Not bad for $579.

EXHIBITION NEWS Remember the upcoming September exhibit at “The Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply”, which Dave Graham arranged for us! There will be plenty of room for all members to exhibit as we will have the whole gallery. All photographs are to be matted and framed under glass. There is no restriction on size of work, or frame style. In addition, those exhibiting will be able to market photo cards and utilize the 4 print racks to display unframed work (must have matte, backing and plastic sleeve). If you are interested in participating, please let me know at or before our July meeting, so we can figure out the number of framed works each can exhibit. An 8 1/2 x 11 ‘Artist Bio and Photo’ will be displayed with your work; the photo and wording is to be supplied by the artist. This info, plus the particulars of work submitted will need to be in well in advance of the show (i.e. at or before our August meeting), as Bill and Bonnie will need time to make all our labels, advertising posters, and postcard/invites for each artist. This is a great opportunity for each of us and our club, and could well become a recurring event. Your talent is needed, so don’t miss out! Lynn Bieber-Weir Exhibition Co-ordinator

This is the second half of the article on NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY from Robert Pratt who got it from a member of the Nanaimo photo club. (1st half was in V1 N2 newsletter) Stars: Two hours after sunset with no moon. For star scenes use ISO 200 or 400 with the lens, usually wide angle, set at f2.8 for two or four minutes. No longer because the stars begin to streak at about five minutes. For Star Trails use ISO 100 at f5.6 or f8 for 30 minutes or longer. For really long streak times film still works best. Moon: Since the moon is lit by the sun the sunny 16 rule*, with a one stop over exposure tweak applied due to the planet's atmosphere. To put it into a scene you need to expose the moon with a telephoto lens maybe a 200mm or 300mm or more depending on how big you want it and on the next frame, with whatever lens works, take the night shot as described above and combine them in the computer. The only time you can get the moon and a scene on a single frame with the same exposure is at moon rise on an evening when the sun is setting at the same time. This happens best on the day before the official full moon rise. Mark you calendar, pick your spot, check your compass setting and hope for an interesting sky. Northern Lights: With warm clothing, fresh batteries and a place out of town where there isn't any light polution from civilization. Using a lens which can open to f2.8 at ISO 100 try 120 seconds, at ISO 200 try 60 seconds and at ISO 400 30 seconds. ISO 100 should get the best results but the longer times will keep you out in the cold where your batteries might give up about the same time the chill gets to you. Fireworks: Fireworks around Canada Day are my favourite as you might just have some twilight in the sky. For ISO 100 try f5.6 or f8 and leave the shutter open for 8 or 15 seconds. You want five or so bursts since fewer don't look complete and more tend to get busy. Lightning: Use Extreme Caution - Photographing Lightning can get you killed or seriously injured. Shoot from a distance from the storm where it is not raining with a telephoto lens. Point your camera in the general direction of where you have seen strikes, using ISO 100 with an aperture of f8 hold the shutter open for 30 seconds and cross your fingers. This is litterly a hit and miss situation as you have no way of knowing where or when the next one will be. Good hunting.

Here are a few photo ideas.
