Application Open for 2018-19 PASS Year!
“Kindness starts with one”, is the
slogan to Random Acts of Kind-
ness Week 2018. PASS Ameri-
Corps school sites celebrated a
week of kindness, committing to
doable, simple and meaningful
kind acts. Kindness really does
start with one—one person, one
act, one place, one city, one
county, and one movement with
one goal in mind: to make our
world a kinder place one act a
time.
Random Acts of Kindness Week Some of the acts of kindness that
our PASS students came up with
included helping a teacher with a
task, giving a compliment to a
peer, leaving school staff a kind
note, picking up litter around the
school, helping a peer with
homework, assisting the custodi-
an with cleaning up after lunch,
and much, much more.
Every single one of us can play a
part in making the world a little
kinder. What will you do?

We are looking forward to
meeting all our new applicants
and putting together our amazing
PASS AmeriCorps Team for the
next school year!
It’s recruitment time again! All
our service postings are up and
the application portal has been
opened. Each year, hundreds of
individuals from all over the
country apply to become Service
Members with the San Diego
County Office of Education’s
PASS AmeriCorps Program. We
begin accepting applications after
the new year to fill positions for
the next school year. We are
always so impressed by the won-
derful people we meet who are
interested in dedicating a year of
their lives to national service.
Our program, PASS AmeriCorps,
is highly competitive because of
the experience we offer, the
professional development and
networking opportunities, the
chance to make an impact, and
the southern California location!
We search for highly qualified
individuals who are interested in
making a difference in the lives of
the children in our San Diego
County communities. Our PASS
AmeriCorps Members must be
at least 22 years old, hold an
Associates Degree or higher,
have some past experience
working with youth, and have a
desire to make a difference. All
applicants go through a rigorous
interview process with a three-
hurdle step system before joining
our team.
Our Term of Service for next
school year is August 20, 2018 to
June 30, 2019. If selected to join
and become a service member
with us, our members are placed
individually or in pairs at elemen-
tary, middle, or high schools in
Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos,
Valley Center-Pauma, or San
Diego Unified schools. They
receive a stipend of $15,000 (1st
yr) or $16,000 (2nd yr) for a

February was
an exciting
month to be a
part of the
Laurel community. PASS stu-
dents tapped into their artistic
abilities during Random Acts of
Kindness Week, as they paint-
ed rocks with a positive word,
accompanied by a handwritten
letter for a special person.
PASS students took full ad-
vantage of the opportunity to
show gratitude and apprecia-
tion. It was sad to see the
week come to a close, but the
excitement for what was to
follow triumphed. Laurel Ele-
mentary Girls on the Run
(GOTR) team met for their
first practice of the year!
GOTR is a non-profit organiza-
tion dedicated to empowering
young girls through a curricu-
lum that promotes a healthy
mind, body and soul. As the
Assistant Coach, I am thrilled
to channel my passion for
female empowerment and
healthy living, alongside an
energetic group of young
ladies. I am so proud of PASS
student, Beyoncé, for her Stu-
dent of the Month Award for
showing integrity, no matter
what!
The motivation, confidence,
and accomplishments that
these kids gain throughout the
program gives me a fulfilling
experience. That said, just over
two weeks in Mission Elemen-
tary, I have already gained so
much knowledge as a PASS
AmeriCorps Service Member.
The students and staff have
been very welcoming and help-
ful. The school itself has an
amazing family environment

to write kind messages on the
posters of their teachers and
other important figures they
interact with on a regular ba-
sis, while also leaving many
hearts empty. After the post-
ers were completed, Samantha
and Danika C. helped put them
up on the classroom and office
doors around campus so eve-
ryone would be surprised
when they found them on the
morning of Valentine’s Day. Bella
made an announcement about Ran-
dom Acts of Kindness Week and
the project that morning so stu-
dents would know to share kind
messages on the posters. It was an
awesome surprise, and some teach-
ers even took their classes around
so their students could write on
the posters of their past teachers.
The week of Valentine’s
Day was also Random
Acts of Kindness week,
so PASS combined the
two for February’s Na-
tional Day of Service.
Many PASS students
spent their recesses mak-
ing a total of 40 posters
for the teachers and staff, all
covered in hearts. All of the
students in PASS took the time

Hello Cougar family! I hope every-
one had a fantastic month and a
great Valentine's day. For our Ran-
dom Acts of Kindness project,
PASS AmeriCorps collaborated
with the after school program to
create appreciation notes to our
teachers for their hard work and
dedication. PASS students helped
by drawing hearts on construction
paper where they and ARC stu-
dents wrote kind notes. Students
chose who they wanted to write to
and some took the challenge to write to every one of
their teachers. There is one student in particular who
went above and beyond, hand delivering his Valentine
note to his favorite instructor, Mr. Mora. It was heart-
warming to see how much they love their teachers and
wanted to thank them for being amazing. I am very proud
to see more of my students taking leadership roles,
knowing how to work as a group, and being proud of
their work. I am excited to see what March brings us and
to welcome Spring.

high marks as the 6-week grading
period comes to an end. We are
proud to announce that many stu-
dents have shown significant aca-
demic and behavioral improve-
ments since joining PASS. Along
with our continued focus on
providing academic support, this
month PASS mentors and students
are celebrating our wonderful
teachers by writing personalized
Greetings from Miss Leah and Mr.
Steven here at Lincoln Middle
School, and happy February! Did
you know January and February
used to be classified simply as “The
Dark Times” and were only estab-
lished as official months years after
March-December? That’s why there
are fewer days in February--we ran
out of days to give to it! Anyway,
back to the newsletter: we have
continued to focus on finishing
thank you cards. In this successful service project, students
wrote thank you cards not only to their teachers, but also for
other staff mem-
bers, family, friends,
and even pets.
Thanks, and see y’all

excited for graduation in a couple
months. This is helping keep our
motivation going. We are also talk-
ing about the transition into high
school, some changes they can
expect, and all the exciting oppor-
tunities high school brings! We
have been building our skills by
working on how to deal with con-
flict and express our disagreements
with each other in a positive re-
storative way. It has been a quick
month, but looking forward to
March, we are keeping our goals in
mind and creating a positive out-
look for our future.
Hello from Jefferson Middle School!
February has been a quick but busy
month. This month in PASS Ameri-
Corps, we made appreciation cards
for all the Jefferson Staff members.
Students were excited to make
something nice for staff members
and show them how important they
are to making Jefferson so great!
We have been working on staying
positive through the semester and
keeping our goals in mind. 8th

February
has been a
busy month
for the Li-
ons. All eighth grade students at-
tended El Camino High School for
the Wildcat Camp. Students partic-
ipated in fun contests and received
a tour of the campus. Seventh
grade students received an
invitation to attend Cal State
San Marcos on a field trip.
They spoke to current college
students and were able to ask
questions about careers. Also,
students received a tour of the
campus. Both seventh and
eighth grade students enjoyed
their respective events.
We are preparing for our Ran-
dom Acts of Kindness National
Day of Service. PASS students
will work on and decorate
their own inspirational stones.
We are hoping they enjoy this
activity. We want them to
promote kindness to all their
classmates and staff!

Hello on this chilly
February day from
Oceanside High
School! This month
we have been fo-
cusing on revisiting
students' goals that
they have set for
themselves. As
students reach
their goals, we add
new ones, celebrat-
their mailboxes so that the staff
can receive an uplifting message
when they least expect it! Stu-
dents have been truly enjoying
writing notes for their teachers!
As students return from Presi-
dents Week, we are looking for-
ward to hearing about their
break, and supporting and en-
couraging them to continue to
strive to become the best version
of themselves.
continues to remain a safe
place for everyone to come
spend time. As the 6-week
progress report approaching,
PASS AmeriCorps students
had been working extremely
hard trying to turn in all their
missing assignments and study-
ing for their exams. The PASS
mentors are excited to see
how dedicated the PASS stu-
dents have been to their edu-
cation and delighted to see
many students improving in
both academics and behaviors.
This month the PASS students
will be celebrating Random Acts
of Kindness by helping to keep
the campus clean or writing a
nice letter to someone. We hope
that this will empower the stu-
dents to live their lives in service.

February was quite a whirlwind. As
our shortest month is coming to a
close, students and staff are enjoy-
ing the bluster and crisp southern
California winter. We are halfway
through our second semester and
our students are
focused on complet-
ing credits in classes
and credit recovery.
Students are wel-
come to come to
the PASS room to
work with me one-
on-one to catch up
or keep up with class assignments
either before school, during class
with permission, lunch and/or after
school. In these turbulent times, it
is more important than ever to
appreciate those that we care
about in life. To spread a little love and kindness in the
world, during the last week of February, we practiced
Random Acts of Kindness throughout the school. During
lunch for the last few days of February and beginning of
March, myself and
student helpers had
tables set up to
encourage students
to write notes of
appreciation to the
important people in
their lives.
