Schooley Mitchell: Business Solutions for the 21st Century By Mike Fickling

Our CommunityMagazine

line with dependable and ob-jective advice, guidance, and recommendations, saving you an average of 27%, with no out of pocket expense. In other words, you don’t pay unless you realize a signifi-cant savings on your bills.”

Any business that uses telephones, cell phones and other wireless devices, computers, or processes debit or credit cards can benefit from Schooley Mitchell’s expertise. Government legislation, vari-ous rate categories for different types, volumes, and sizes of transactions, errors in invoices, discretionary mark ups - all these things result in excess charges from your payment processing company. Jason Carmichael can fix it for you; again, with no out-of-of pocket cost to you.

The professionals at Schooley Mitchell don’t try to “sell” you anything; they just provide you professional advice. Consultants receive no kick-backs or incentives from service providers. The services are risk free, and clients incur no out-of-pocket expenses, as Schooley Mitchell’s fees are self-funded out of the savings generated.

The basic service, referred to as Existing Systems Review, is really quite simple. Schooley Mitchell will review all the services a client uses to com-municate, including cell phones and smart phones, local service, faxing, long distance, calling cards, toll-free service, merchant services, conferenc-ing, equipment, Internet, data services and more.

By using their specialized tools, they then prepare a report summarizing the services received and costs incurred by the clients, and provide them with solutions, advising them about how they can improve their costs. These documented savings are then used to determine the fees that are to be paid.

To find out more details about how Schooley Mitchell can save you money by enhancing your business technology with virtually no risk, visit their webpage at www.schooleymitchell.com/jcarmichael.

The rules of business have changed. Today’s rapidly changing marketplace requires

a critical new skillset and an overwhelming amount of tech savvy. Choosing the best tele-communications systems and merchant services provider are essential decisions that can made a difference in your business’ bottom line and may even determine the success or failure of today’s entrepreneurs. Without professional advice and recommendations, making these choices is simi-lar to getting a drink of water from an open fire hydrant.

When Jason Carmichael was laid off from his job, he knew it was time to strike out on his own. He also knew he wanted to interact with other businesses, to help them contain costs, and wanted to get involved in his community. That’s how Schooley Mitchell came to Flower Mound.

Carmichael is an Optimization Specialist, providing clients with a com-prehensive analysis and assessment of their existing telecommunications services and systems to identify billing errors and opportunities to reduce costs, while at the same time, maintaining or improving service. He has a diverse background, which enables him to understand the issues facing companies big and small.

Most businesses spend more than they should on telecom. In fact, up to 35% more! The Schooley Mitchell concept is simple. They improve your bottom line with independent and objective advice for all your telecom needs. The best part – they don’t charge any fees unless they save you mon-ey on technology solutions.

These days, the number or size of a company’s customers no longer de-fines success. Success is defined by your ability to get your product to the market more cost-effectively and efficiently than your competitors. In the current economy, where overhead costs matter more than ever, Schooley Mitchell delivers a competitive advantage to you via its telecommunica-tions management services.

“Our concept is simple,” said Carmichael, “We improve your bottom

care, or give up a pet because they are unable to afford unexpected expenses such as emergency medical care.

Another very impactful and innovative program start-ed by HSFM and joined by others is Love on Wheels transport program. Its mission is to reduce euthanasia of dogs in DFW area shelters by transporting them to areas where demand for adoptable dogs cannot cur-rently be met. In just 18 months HSFM has transported over 700 dogs through Love on Wheels. That’s 700 dogs who didn’t perish in a local shelter. 700 spaces opened up to give the dogs still there more time to find homes.

HSFM is a successful, local organization because of adopters, volunteers, and donors in this community. There are many opportunities to get involved in caring for animals, as a foster, or on the organization’s admin-istrative side. Someday, they aspire to have a location of their own and are looking for business partners and opportunities to make that happen…

Since 1997, the Humane Society of Flower Mound (HSFM) has given hope to thousands of homeless,

abused, and unwanted animals in Flower Mound, TX and the surrounding communities through its many animal welfare programs ranging from adoption pro-grams to education and outreach efforts. HSFM is fo-cused on creating and nurturing respectful, responsible, and compassionate relationships between animals and people.

Their adoption program has placed almost 6,000 pets in loving homes in the community.

In 2012, HSFM started a fund to help keep animals out of shelters in the first place and in their original home. Flower’s Fund was established to help pet owners faced with difficult choices when a pet requires unexpected, expensive care that the owner cannot afford. Flower’s Fund helps pet owners who find themselves facing the painful choice of having to euthanize, compromise on

1 12 oz package fresh cranberries1/4 C green onion, chopped1/4 C cilantro, chopped1 small jalapeno pepper1 1/4 C sugar1/4 t cumin2 T lemon juicedash salt2 8 oz packages cream cheese

1. Put your cranberries in a food processor. I used my mini chopper (one batch of Cran-berryWoodChipDelight was enough for me. The blender and I aren’t speaking to each other at this point….) You could also, just chop them up.2. Chop up your green onion, cilantro, and jalapeno pepper into small pieces. Careful of the seeds now. Throw on a pair of rubber gloves or something, please. The seeds are the hot part of the pepper. If you don’t like a lot of heat on the old pallet, just leave the jalapeno out.3. Add all ingredients (but the cream cheese and the wheat thins) into a bowl. Mix them all together, cover and store in the fridge for at least 4 hours. The sugar needs some time to soak in to the cranberries and break up their bitter taste. 4. When you are ready to serve, place your cream cheese bricks on a plate.5. Spread the cream cheese out as evenly as you can.6. Pour your cranberry mixture over the cream cheese.7. Spread it all around.8. Serve immediately with Wheat Thins, Ritz Crackers or Tortilla Chips.

Counseling and other services are provided free of charge to the children and non-offending family members. In 2013, CACDC conducted 810 forensic interviews of chil-dren and provided over 9,900 free counseling services for abused children and their non-offending family members.

In an effort to remain proactive and keeps kids safe, the agency offers a free child abuse prevention education curriculum to teachers, daycares, church staff and members, corporate employees and the general public. The curriculum teaches adults throughout Denton County how to recognize, react and report child abuse. For more information on how to support the agency or schedule a free class, visit www.cacdc.org or call (972) 317-2818.

The Children’s Advocacy Cen-ter for Denton County (CACDC) was a recipient of the 2014 J.C. Montgomery Child Safety Award on Friday, August 22nd for their outstanding work in child safety and injury prevention. The cer-

emony, sponsored by the Texas Office for the Prevention of Developmental Dis-abilities, took place at the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room at the Texas State Capitol in Austin.

CACDC was nominated because of its innovative, effective, and collabora-tive, community-driven advocacy for the protection of children. Child safety is extremely important but often overlooked. The 4th Annual J.C. Montgomery Award ceremony recognized the work of eight notable individual and organiza-tion leaders across the state that display immense qualities of leadership in the field of child safety and their efforts to build awareness around this issue.

It is that time of year when the school is in full swing, the leaves start to turn color and a different type of

bug comes around. Flu season is just around the corner, usually starting around Thanksgiving/Christmas and peaking in January/February. The best prevention is the flu shot. It is advised by the CDC (Center of Disease Con-trol and Prevention) to get your flu shot now. It takes 2 weeks to be fully effective. There is a misconception that you can get the “flu” from the flu shot. The shot is an “at-tenuated” or weakened dead virus. It can cause mild “flu like” symptoms such as mild body aches and a mild fe-ver, but the symptoms only last a few days and occur in a small percentage of those getting the immunization. It is our responsibility to our family and children to get im-munized, not only for the flu shot, but for other diseases such as pertussis. Immunity is a community thing. This means that if everyone in our community got the flu shot we have what is called “herd immunity” so the flu virus is more likely to stay away.

As always, we offer natural alternatives for those who cannot receive the flu shot because of allergies to eggs. Some of these alternatives are vitamin D, elderberry con-centrate and vitamin C. Of course, drinking plenty of flu-ids, getting your rest and washing your hands are always good measures to prevent the spread of any infection.

Bring this article in to the pharmacy and receive $5 off a flu shot.

Dennis Song RPh,CHC is a registered pharmacist who is certified in herbal and natural medicines. He has been in the Lewisville/Flower Mound com-munity for over 30 years and is the only integrative pharmacist in the area.

Easy Snowman MarshmallowsYou could always make homemade marshmallows, but I like store-bought because they keep things stress-free. To make simple snowman marshmallows you will need:

• One bag Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows• Black 20-second icing• Orange piping icing• Marshmallow coating {recipe below}

1. Begin by spreading the marshmallows on a parchment lined cookie sheet.2. Then, cut the marshmallows in half with kitchen scissors and lay them on the baking sheet sticky side up. If you

have trouble with them sticking to the scissors, dip the blade into marshmallow coating between snips.3. Once cut, dip the sticky sides of the marshmallows into a mixture of 3/4 cups confectioner’s sugar and 1/2 cup

cornstarch. I picked this recipe up from Shauna Server’s book, Marshmallow Madness. If you’re looking for a fun Christmas gift for the sweet lover in your life, I highly recommend it.

4. After dipping, use a kitchen strainer to shake off any excess coating . Try to remove as much as possible so the icing will stick to the marshmallow

5. Before decorating, you may want to pull out any “mooshed-mallows”. They don’t have to be perfectly round, but the really squished ones won’t look as nice.

6. Finally, add a little snowman face. Let the icing dry for a few hours and you’ll have a fleet of adorable little marshmallows to layer in your favorite hot cocoa mix or to drop into a sweet cup of hot chocolate

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow By Mike Fickling

If you’re a woman, you will un-derstand these questions: How

many hours do you spend shaving your legs? Tweezing your brows?

Getting a bikini wax? It’s estimated that women spend more than 72 days over the course of a lifetime just shaving their legs! (That translates to 1,728 hours!) In addition, women spend an average of 30 days tweez-ing their eyebrows. This can’t be how anyone wants to spend their time. According to surveys, shaving is one of women’s most hated beauty ritu-als, with 35 per cent saying they loathe it more than anything else in their beauty regimen.

At Hair Today Gone Tomorrow, their goal is to change that. You may feel like you’re alone in having unwanted hair, but believe it or not, your hair problems are probably typical. There are many reasons why people - both women and men - turn to electrolysis as the best way to remove hair. No matter what specific problem: area, age, gender, hair or skin type, hair color, or skin color, electrolysis can help. Electrolysis is a per-manent, safe, and effective solution.

Since 1875, electrolysis has been, and remains, the only 100% perma-nent hair removal method approved by the FDA. Electrolysis perma-nently destroys the germative cells responsible for hair growth by way of insertion of a fine probe in the hair follicle and the application of a current adjusted to each hair type and treatment area.

Permanent hair removal using electrolysis has come a long way since its beginnings. Today’s computer technology enables our electrologists to work with more speed and comfort. Epilators are much quicker, uti-lizing current timings of thousandths of a second over the longer cur-rent applications of the past, plus, intensity settings can now be modu-

lated to varying proportions. The instruments and equipment used in their offices are just part of the changes that have occurred in the elec-trolysis industry.

The electrologist technicians at Hair Today Gone Tomorrow begin their education with a vigorous apprenticeship program, which pro-vides them detailed knowledge in the fields of equipment, sterilization, hygiene, electricity, biology, chemistry, dermatology, and pharmacol-ogy. An extensive treatment training program is also included during their apprenticeship program, requiring them to complete 400 hours of treatment training before becoming a certified technician. Their techni-cians are trained in, and follow, strict OSHA standards of sterilization for all of our equipment.

Maybe it’s just an unwelcome maintenance routine that takes a lot of time, but often, unwanted hair creates self-consciousness serious enough to impair relationships with other people. If unwanted hair gets in the way of your confidence, social life, work, sports, schedules, or even self-expression, the professionals at Hair Today Gone Tomorrow want to help you.

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow is excited to celebrate their one-year an-niversary on Tuesday, November 4! You are invited to stop by and help celebrate, and see how permanent hair removal can improve your life. www.htgtelectrolysis.com 3305 Long Prairie Rd, Flower Mound, (682) 593-1442.

What if we changed the image of empowerment? It is important that we main-tain the professionalism of yesteryear, but I argue that we must speak with a voice that reflects today’s culture. The image of a business suit may no longer reflect the culture of today’s business community in some instances. Imagine going to a conference executed by Apple, Southwest Airlines, Nike, Google, Ben & Jerry’s or Yelp. Are they adhering to the status quo or are they taking things to the next level? The cultures of these organizations are fluid and changing constantly. They do not prepare for the changing times. They are leading the change that drives our culture.

The Lewisville Area Chamber was recently awarded more state wide awards from the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives organization than any chamber in Denton County. Your Lewisville Area Chamber was also recently recognized as the Best Chamber in Denton County by Murray Media. I mention these accolades as a reminder to all our members and the community at large that we are focused on creating the best business advocacy organization in Texas. We are not there yet but with your ongoing commitment of time, talent, and treasure we will continue be the change you desire. Thank you for your trust in the Best Chamber of Com-merce in Denton County, Your Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce!

George Bernard Shaw said,” Progress is impos-sible without change, and those who cannot

change their minds cannot change anything.” It is true that like all things over the course of time, change will continue to knock at our doorstep. Stating that some-thing is new, different and innovative does not make it

so. We often hear in the media, in board rooms and in our own offices that we are making changes for the better. Our chamber industry has been a consistent pro-ponent of ensuring that our communities look down the road not just five to ten years but rather generations down the road. We’ve seen this movement in some of the larger projects where chambers have taken the lead.

Chambers have formed grassroots movements to build commuter rail, high-ways, community colleges and the like. These examples of change not only make a positive impact on the community today, but also will impact individuals, families and businesses long after we have passed on. At the culmination of these efforts, we celebrate by bringing out the ribbon, oversized scissors, and camera. We invite our elected officials, major investors, Ambassadors, chamber members and commu-nity members to join us as we stand shoulder to shoulder and smile as wide as the fictional character from a Kool-aid commercial. I can hear it now, “Hey Kool-aid, Man!” This is one segment of our history of how a chamber has made a difference in the communities we serve through change.

I believe that chambers also make an impact by keeping our programming fresh. Take, for example, the execution of a leadership conference. We can all picture the marketing for the program. Zig Ziglar flashes before our eyes and we see images of executives in business suits and the view from the corner office. The market-

Nutcracker. They have two performances only this year – performing at Marcus High school - Saturday November 29th at 7:30 PM and Sunday November 30th at 2:00 PM. I can’t wait to see Clara, the Mouse King, thehandsomePrince, theSugarPlumFairyandtheSnowQueenjusttomention a few!!! There is no better holiday tradition to share with your family!! And we are so excited that they are coming to perform for WOFM! There might even be a surprise visitor that evening.

And you MUST mark your calendars for Friday December 5th for WOFM’s Home for The Holidays Christmas Home tour. We have five wonderful homes to showcase this year!! We sold out last year so you want to make plans early with your BFF’s to buy your tickets. Further information can be found at www.womenofflowermound.org. The committee is planning a wonderful luncheon and there will be a silent auction with FABULOUS Christmas trees and centerpieces. You might go home with some great ideas or a new accessory to showcase your own homes!

WOFM is a non-profit 501c (3) organization whose primary goal is to raise money for graduating seniors. However we care deeply for other local charities. Each month we sponsor a local charity with members bringing supplies specifically requested for that organization. And please note that WOFM does not discrimi-nate members by zip code!! We welcome all women from the surrounding areas! So come join the fun! And remember that gifts of time and love are surely the basic in-gredients of a truly merry Christmas!

One of my all-time favorite Christmas Carols is Silver Bells with the lyrics - “city sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holi-day style, in the air there’s a feeling of Christmas”. It might be a little early, however the holidays are just around the corner!! I know, I know, it’s a tad difficult thinking of Christmas when it’s still 90 de-

grees outside. However, it’s not too early to mark your calendars for the Women of Flower Mound’s upcoming meetings. Our meetings are AL-WAYS the second Tuesday of the month, 6:30 PM at Bridlewood Club house. By the time you finish reading your favorite community maga-zine – OCM – our October 14th meeting will merely be a fond memory. We had the privilege of having Jo Pearson, judge on TLC Craft Wars design the fall project specifically for WOFM!! I heard lots of oohs, lots of aahs and much interaction among the ladies.

On November 11th our guest speaker is none other than local celeb-rity chef Phillip Smithwick with Seven Loaves Catering & Events. He has some fun, tasty and easy recipes in mind for us. With his boyish good looks and dashing personality he will have us eating right out of his hands in more ways than one!! It will be an informative fun filled evening with much audience participation!

You DO NOT want to miss our meeting on December 9th!! We are so excited to have the Lake Cities Ballet performing selections from The

Anger is a complex emotion –both to feel and to express. While some people with deep rooted anger issues need in-depth counseling, there are basic points that can help people gain control of their anger:

Anger is neither good nor bad. It is an emotion that signals that something in life is not going as you would like and needs your attention. When you first begin to anger, pay attention to your body’s response. Are you clenching your jaw? Do you heat up? Start sweating? Recognize these cues, and use them as a signal to take deep breaths and work on staying calm be-fore you respond to the situation.

Anger is considered a “cover emotion,” meaning there is quite often another feeling under the surface, such as hurt, fear or frustration. By identifying the underlying feelings and convey those instead, there is a better chance of a more posi-tive outcome.

Anger is also seen as a two-part process: experiencing pain and adding triggering thoughts. We feel wronged in some way, and then we have thoughts as to why this wrong has occurred. These thoughts can build and fuel the fire until an explosion of anger erupts. The goal is to replace trigger thoughts with coping thoughts –thoughts that counter the negative and calm instead of intensify the situation. With practice, this can help a person minimize their angry outbursts.

By paying attention to our feelings and making conscious choices in how we respond, we can control our anger and im-prove our relationships. Counseling has shown to be extreme-ly effective in this area, and Youth and Family Counseling can offer guidance with this and many other issues. gion, our vision is to bring a greater sense of commu-nity through our message and dis-tribution, carv-ing out a unique niche. As print is only one way of reaching today’s sophisticated consumer, we’ve expanded our magazine via the social media, internet, newsletters, while consis-tently increasing our distributorship of the print version of OCM. We’re proud of our contributors who share their talents with us, and we personally endorse our advertisers. They are hard-working people who passionately run their business. Service and reputa-tion define them as experts in their field. We encourage you to do business with them and tell your friends about them. Here at OCM, we wish you a happy holiday season, filled with the warmth and love of family and friendship.

How did this year speed by so quickly? In the midst of the hustle and bustle of this season, I would like to dedicate this issue to my Dad, Jay Schlichting. His entrepreneurial spirit was a core part of my upbringing. Support-ive of our magazine venture from the beginning, he was one of our first advertisers. In the midst of the changing dynamics of print as a media source, launching a

publication which is not a franchise, nor already in existence, at times seemed like an insurmountable task. On the occasions when I wondered how we were going to push through another issue (publishing is A LOT of work and our market very com-petitive), I’d remember that Dad started his most successful business, The Schlichting Group, in his fifties. So I would pray a little harder and God would show us the way, opening the right doors. Now we celebrate the anniversary of our fourth year. Our Community Magazine remains a beautiful, authentic, grass roots publication; highlighting so many of the amazing people, businesses and non-profits in our area. We’re commit-ted to connecting people together in a positive way. We aren’t the daily news and rather than isolating the communities by re-

It’s a wonderful life By Bob Weir

Do you have a favorite Christmas movie? Al-

though there are many good ones, the one that really puts the season and life in general in per-spective for me is, “It’s a Won-derful Life.” The 1946, Frank Capra classic, in addition to be-ing a marvelous love story with a dose of divine guidance, com-bines drama, pathos, humor, and a lesson for all those who lose sight of their individual value to the world. When George Bai-ley, played by James Stewart, at-tempts suicide because he fears

bankruptcy, a guardian angel is assigned to show him what the world would have been like without him. Bailey, a very respect-ed resident of the very respectable town of Bedford Falls, has sacrificed his dream of a future in a big city, in order to run the failing Building and Loan institution, founded by his deceased father.

Lionel Barrymore is at his best as the greedy banking tyrant Henry Potter. For years, Potter has tried unsuccessfully to de-stroy the B & L and become the only lending institution in town, thereby squeezing every penny from the residents with usurious loans. Bailey is the only thing standing in his way, until a mis-hap by a Bailey associate, gives Potter the edge he needs. When Bailey realizes that he might not only lose the B & L, but face embezzlement charges as well, he turns bitter and decides to end it all.

When Clarence, his guardian angel, grants his wish that he was never born, Bailey gets a view of Bedford Falls without his influence. The home that he and his wife restored, honeymooned in and raised a happy family in, is empty and dilapidated. Donna Reed, who plays his adorable wife, runs from him in terror when he claims to be married to her, and his three children don’t even exist. His mother doesn’t know him, and threatens to call the police if he doesn’t get away from her door. Bailey runs along the dark, snow covered streets of the town, now known at Pot-tersville, frantically trying to obtain recognition from family and friends who once revered him.

Residents, who used to be friendly and polite, have become hostile and cynical. The cozy, conservative taverns have become strip joints where prostitution flourishes. People, who once owned their own homes, providing the rural tapestry of the town, are no longer a part of the landscape. In addition, when Bailey was a youngster, he saved his kid brother from drowning. His brother grew up to be a hero in WW2, saving the lives of many other soldiers. Now, Bailey visits the cemetery in town and finds his brother’s headstone, indicating that he drowned when he was a child. The fear in Bailey’s eyes when he realizes that he had a wonderful life, but threw it away during a bout of self-pity, is, to me, one of the most gripping moments in movie history.

He begs to have his old life back; with the B&L problems, Potter’s incessant attempts to ruin him, and even the loose or-nament at the bottom of the banister that keeps coming off in his hand when he heads upstairs. When his wish is granted, he races through the streets screaming, “Merry Christmas,” as he basks in the glow of a second chance at life, while his family and friends contribute their savings and valuables to get him out of debt. The movie warms the heart, enriches the soul, and keeps the viewer’s attention, without ever resorting to sex, violence, or profanity. Furthermore, it provides a valuable lesson in how we perceive our circumstances. Moreover, we’re urged to consider the differences each life makes in the overall scheme of things.

Since we don’t live in a vacuum, in order for our lives to have any meaning at all, it must make an impact on the lives of oth-ers. What would the world be like if you were never born? How many people would be less than they are today, if not for your positive influence? There are George Baileys in every town and every country; people who work selflessly to improve the lives of those less fortunate. While you celebrate this holiday season, with all the stress that often accompanies it, remember how lucky you are to have family and friends that love you. The world would be a lonely and frightening place without them. The affec-tion you have for each other is what makes for a wonderful life.
