We are half way through 2014 already and it is hard to believe how fast time is going by! We have been busy providing summer promotional products, apparel and custom labeled bottle water for our amazing clients this summer.

This is golf tournament season and we are so enjoying our involvement with the

many tournaments and their fundraising efforts. We are so proud to be a part of a strong community that gives back.

TNT has developed a new division to our company to expand the opportunities for our customers that have more products that needs serviced. Within this division, customers that need to source several different items can benefit from bundling all

complicated. She believes in em-powering her patients to take care of themselves.

Dr. Amy Burton graduated from Newman Smith High School in Car-rollton, TX. She received her un-dergraduate degree at University of Texas at Dallas, where she was both an Anson L Clark Scholar as well as Silver Anniversary Scholar, gradu-ating in 2000 with a B.S. in Biology and an emphasis in Neuroscience.

She graduated from Medical School at Texas Tech University and spent her first 2 years in Lubbock and went through her clinical rotations in El Paso, Texas. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama to complete both her Pediatric Residency and Pedi-atric Endocrinology fellowship. While there she was an active volunteer in the community as well as at diabetes camps. Her research interests during Fellowship included training residents in Motivational Interviewing for Obesity Counseling and the Effects of Growth Hormone on Lipid Levels in Children.

Dr. Amy Burton also volunteers at local health fairs and Camp Sweeney, a diabetes camp in Whitesboro, TX. She enjoys the opportunity to speak about her passion: healthy eating habits and exercise for children.

For more details view her website: pentonline.com. Her office is located in the medical offices beside Presbyterian Hospital in Denton, TX.

Meet Dr. Amy Burton, a wom-an who is passionate about

helping children in our community. “We’ve lost that personal touch in medicine. Here at Pediatric Endocri-nology of North Texas, we see your child as an individual and not just a number.” This is her philosophy and the reason she opened her practice in Denton, TX. Although Dr. Burton had a successful practice at Children’s Medical Hospital, she wanted the freedom to treat her patients in a more personal environment, as well as spend quality time with her husband and two young sons. A woman who is compelled by her strong faith, she knew this was the right decision. She specializes in pediatric endocri-nology, which in laymen’s terms, deals with children’s hormonal issues. Obesity, diabetes, growth and developmental disorders are some of the areas in which Dr. Burton specializes. She be-lieves in having open conversations with the families and en-courages them to be well informed. As parents are much more knowledgeable today, she is helpful, directing them to reputable information sources via the internet and websites. She main-tains, ”Health is a mutual responsibility.”

Dr. Burton realized her strong desire to work with children when she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Children’s Medical Hospital in high school. In choosing her career path, she sur-mised that she could find great fulfillment helping and working with this age group. She is a first generation American AND a native Texan, growing up in Carrollton, TX. She was raised by hard-working parents who demonstrated that family is a pri-ority. Dr. Burton has built her business and family life accord-ing to these values. Amazingly, this is also her approach when treating her patients. She doesn’t believe in simply prescribing pills to “fix” the problem, finding that it is usually much more

Many Flower Mound resi-dents shared their personal stories as they came to support the event.

-- One woman begin to cry as we told her what we were raising money for because she had been in remission for 6 months. She gave a generous donation in hopes to help oth-ers in her own community sur-vive cancer just as she had.

-- A father talked about his daughter who had passed away from cancer a few years before. He mentioned how he wished

they had had the cancer center in Dallas sooner because it would have made her fight against cancer much easier being able to do it from her own home. He was grateful to see that we were able to help raise money and fund the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas to help prevent the hardship and loss he went through.

For more information about Swim Across America, please visit Dallas Home Page - Swim Across America.

Kwik Kar Wash is located at 2221 FM 3040 in Flower Mound, and more information can be found at www.gokwikkar.com.

At the Kwik Kar Flower Mound car wash benefit-ing the fourth annual Swim Across America on Saturday, May 10, more than 500 Flow-er Mound residents showed up in force to support cancer research and made generous donations. The total amount raised was $13,019. This amount exceeded the $10,000 goal for this year’s event.

Swim Across America vol-unteers accepted donations and explained how the money stays right here in Dallas and goes to the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center to fund clinical trials.

“We owe a big thank you to Kwik Kar Flower Mound for an incredi-ble day for our community, stated Andrea Dickson, co-chair of the Dal-las chapter of Swim Across America. “Each year, Bill Mitchell and the Kwik Kar team prove that giving back to charity can be a part of owning a business. Swim Across America Dallas is proud to be the recipient of their generosity.”

Local sponsors included Kohl’s Department Store, Cornerstone Staff-ing and Rapid Med Urgent Care.

The event included face painting and live music from three groups: The Creek Band, a duet of Matthew and Francis, and a father-son duo of Eric and Frankie Dorton. 6 7ourcommunitymagazine.com

He also co-authored House Bill 1206, which requires law enforcement to actively investigate the location of a child who has been missing for 48 hours and, after finding the child, assess whether child has been subjected to abuse.

“Representative Simmons and his family have a sincere passion for caring for abused children and for all the children of Texas,” says Daniel Leal, Executive Di-rector of the CACDC, “it was because of this genuine enthusiasm that the Board of Directors invited Representative Simmons to join our Advising Council.”

The Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County (CACDC) is a non-profit agency serving child victims of sexual or very serious physical abuse after a report is made to Child Protective Services or law enforcement. The agency works closely with law enforcement, Child Protective Services, the District At-torney’s Office, and sexual assault nurse examiners throughout the investigation and prosecution of severe child abuse cases. Counseling and other services are provided free of charge to the children and non-offending family members. For more information about the Children’s Advocacy Center, visit www.cacdc.org or call (972) 317-2818.

Texas State Representative Ron Simmons recently accepted an invitation from the Children’s Advocacy Center’s Board of Directors to join the Advisory Council. The Advisory Council consists of individuals whose association with the Children’s Advocacy Center promotes the agency mission and goals.

“I am honored to join the Children’s Advocacy Center’s Advisory Council,” said Rep. Simmons. “The organization is unique in the way it partners with various governmental, law enforcement, and medical organizations to provide services that would not otherwise be available. I look forward to working with my fellow advisory council members in promoting and continuing the excellent work done by the CACDC.”

It does seem a bit early to start thinking about school starting, but it is less than 8 weeks away.

With the start of school comes homework and study-ing. I realize that many parents take their children off their ADHD medications for the summer break and some are reluctant to restart them in the fall. It is crucial that behavioral conditions be treated ap-propriately in order for the child to learn and func-tion properly in school. Are stimulant medications such as Adderall or Concerta the only option? In some cases they are necessary, but there are natural vitamin and herbal supplements that have been very effective in either augmenting or replacing these drugs.

The thought is that in conditions such as ADD or ADHD, there is a deficiency of a neurotransmitter or signaling agent called norepinephrine. The medi-cations work by supplying this neurotransmitter in the brain. These drugs amphetamine based and can have side effects such as insomnia and decrease in appetite.

In some cases, the vitamin and herbal supple-ments have been shown to help improve conditions of ADHD. I have used supplements such as omega 3 fish oil, B vitamins, melatonin and Focus Factor safely and effectively in either replacing or reducing the exposure to medications. I would caution that not all supplements are the same and some may even be dangerous. Lower quality fish oil may contain mercury, PCB and rancid fish. At Flower Mound Pharmacy, we only carry the highest quality proven supplements. We have expert pharmacists that spe-cialize in working with local pediatricians to formu-late a medication or supplement plan that is custom-ized to your child’s needs.

Leadership Lewisville is proud to be kicking off its

27th year serving the Lewisville area. Leadership Lewisville is a professional leadership de-velopment program offered by the Lewisville Area Chamber

of Commerce. The course was established to identify, educate, de-velop, and inspire emerging leaders for community involvement by exposing them to the realities, opportunities, and challenges of our civic and business community. For the 2014-2015 year, the course and content have been significantly enhanced to enrich the experi-ence for participants and sponsors and to reflect the many changes throughout our communities.

The new and improved program will continue to educate partici-pants on important topics that pertain to the community, but it has added business acumen in professional development competencies, group decision making, servant leadership, communication skills, social media, and more. It has become the premier leadership de-

velopment program for a community serious about business today and its leaders who will make a difference in new and different ways. Cristina Rodriguez, VP of Program Development at the Chamber says “We are excited about the new leadership program. One added feature this year is the overnight retreat which will add to the team building experience.”

The Leadership Lewisville Program is a prestigious 9-month long interactive experience that begins with a 1.5 day retreat in Sep-tember and consists of 8 one-day monthly sessions. It provides the foundation of knowledge and the tools necessary to ensure that po-tential leaders develop and refine their leadership skills, as well as understand the issues and actively contribute to problem solving.

This program welcomes participants who are already making a difference but want to sharpen their skills and are willing to develop new relationships in a fun, fast-paced, and hands-on atmosphere. If this sounds like you, please visit http://www.lewisvillechamber.org/programs/leadership-lewisville to learn more. The class size is limited, so get your application in before the August 1st deadline to be considered.

Many people want more for themselves, whether that means achieving more, getting healthier, or reaching a goal. Somehow though, the desire doesn’t always equate to accom-plishing the dream. It takes motivation to move from vision to reality, and while this can be difficult, there are steps that can make it easier.

1. Write out your plan: Put your goal down on paper. Write out what you want to accomplish, and brainstorm the steps it will take to get there. Break the steps down so there are achievements that can be made in the short-term.

2. Verbalize your plan: Whether you share it with the world or only a close friend, having someone to encourage and hold you accountable makes it harder to give up.

3. Start: Take a step, no matter how small. If you want to get in shape, take a ten minute walk. If you want to save mon-ey, open an account and put in the minimum deposit. Take the first step, and then, soon after, take another.

4. Give yourself some grace: Things won’t go perfectly throughout the process, so remind yourself that it takes time for actions to become habits, and do not let minor set-backs be an excuse to stop. Acknowledge the backslide, then start again.

5. Celebrate along the way: Look back at your writing plan often, so that you can recognize accomplishments along the way. The end objective may be far off in the distance, but there is much to celebrate on the journey. Be your own cheer-leader and be proud of the progress you’re making.

If you need further motivation, the counselors at Youth and Family Counseling are ready to help you work towards your goals. Contact us at (972)724-2005 to schedule an ap-pointment.

Welcome to our Summer & Back to School issue.

As we celebrate the slower pace of our summer months, we en-joy the long days and appreciate the cooler evenings. More time is spent with our families and close friends: many of us travel to new and familiar places. Finally, we allow ourselves the luxury to stop and breathe a little deeper, enjoy-

ing the beauty of family and relationships. As our area continues to grow, residents are now fortunate

to have a wide variety of activities nearby. We have festivals, parades, outdoor concerts and movies; or if air conditioning is a must, try some of our popular restaurants and shops. Some of my favorite community events this season are Flower Mound’s

Keep your toys to a manageable number (it starts with Legos, then moves to ATVs and Jet Skis in the later years). Houses, boats, and mo-torcycles all need maintenance, which drains your resources – the most important of which is time.

Expensive clothes, makeup, and hairdos won’t make you look half as great as a genuine smile and a healthy body. There’s a lot less drama in a fitness class than at the mall (usually).

Remember that it’s easy to create our own drama when we put off bills, doctor’s appointments, and chores. The feelings of dread are un-necessary, and usually things aren’t as bad as we thought they would be.

Lighten the load. When you’re on a shopping excursion or on a wil-derness hike, it helps to stop every once in a while and lighten your load, right? You pull the extra, unneeded items out of your bag and either set them aside for later use, or scrap them altogether. Now take a step back: how can you lighten your drama-load in other areas of your life? How about not worry about future problems that might not ever happen. Or not worry about others’ unkindness or negative opinions of you. Lightening the load of your thoughts can sure contribute to cutting the drama.

It’s a never-ending saga, isn’t it? The per-petual quest for self-improvement: how

to do things better, faster, smarter...whew! Exhausting. It’s easy to let drama creep into our lives – drama that keeps us from living peacefully, sapping our energy, and fogging our minds. Since when did we need so much instruction? Was it like this for our grandpar-ents?

Many of us are in the stage of life when we’re around a lot of young people including pre-teens and teenagers. It’s funny how the

advice heaped on them in their “formative years” is just as valuable for the rest of us (growing up is overrated anyway, right?). Here are a few reminders to help remove the drama-clutter from our lives:

Choose your friends carefully. It’s better to have a few quality friends than dozens of mere acquaintances. Spend time with people who bring minimal mood swings to the relationship, who make you laugh, don’t compete with you, and are reliable. Your friends’ habits, good or bad, eventually wear off on you.

The Best Kept Secretby Lori Fickling

endless. Through the power of social media, there’s no reason your business can’t be discovered by not only those in your own community, but by people any-where in the world. Social media marketing is the key to opening up a whole new world. And it’s there for the taking.

I still meet people who hate Facebook, Twitter, and all the rest, but even they acknowledge that they need to be in the game. Let’s face it, it’s where people are. And if you have a business, you want to be where people are. The process can be overwhelming, and sometimes it’s difficult to even know where to start. But you’ll never get there if you don’t take that first step. And don’t hesi-tate to call a professional if you need help.

Don’t ignore the social media phenomenon. Be sure to include it in your marketing program. And what-ever you do, make sure your business is NOT the “best kept secret in town!”

How many times have you heard someone proud-ly declare, “We’re the best kept secret in town,”

as if it were a good thing? Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.

It was understandable a few years ago. I mean you pretty much had to depend on word of mouth and find that magic combination of advertising to draw atten-tion to your business. But talk about a limited market. Only the people in your community knew who you were - at least you hoped they did.

Today, your opportunities for exposure are literally

All in a day’s work for a cop By Bob Weir

One of the toughest jobs for any police officer is

the issuance of traffic tickets for minor violations. It’s one thing to stop someone traveling sev-eral miles per hour over the limit and remind him of the dangers of speeding as you cite him with a costly document that will rein-force the advice. But the idea of stopping some guy on his way to or from work, to hit him with a summons for not using his turn signal or for an expired inspec-tion tag, makes the officer ap-pear petty toward someone who

is not exactly a menace to society. Yes, even minor laws must be enforced, but it’s not the best public relations opportunity for cops.

Firefighters, equally important to public safety, generally have a better image, because whenever you see them they’re carrying a child out of a burning building or posing with local kids on a fire truck and letting the little tykes wear some of the uniform equip-ment. Although both jobs are service-oriented and should be viewed as necessary safeguards against life-threatening situations, many drivers will experience instant stress at the sight of a police cruiser, but experience no such trepidation when they notice that red engine heading back to the firehouse. That’s because cops have an additional responsibility associated with saving lives; issuing traffic tickets.

How often have you spied one of those marked units in your rearview mirror and not quickly glanced at your speed? If you no-tice that you’re a bit lead-footed, you’re reluctant to step on the brakes because the officer will notice the red warning lights in the rear. However, if you’re casually driving along and suddenly notice a unit coming your way or parked on the side of the road, you might have a sudden impulse to tap the brakes a little just in case you had been a bit heavy on the gas pedal. Then your eyes keep a close watch on the actions of the uniformed driver as you antici-pate your possible fate. Will those roof lights go on, signaling for you to pull over?

It’s a mental image that could ruin anyone’s day. Over the course

of twenty years as a cop in New York City, I don’t remember ever making a driver happy about getting a ticket. In fact, sometimes the motorist felt compelled to tell me what he thought about a public servant who has nothing better to do than to annoy decent, hardworking taxpayers when he could be locking up drug dealers. Well, most cops would rather lock up felons than chase after driv-ers who might have an inoperable taillight, but if that’s all they did, how long would it take before every car on the road looked like a reject from the demolition derby? How safe would you feel on the roadways if hot-footed speedsters had no fear of those public sentinels with their radar equipment?

It’s axiomatic in police work that nobody wants us around until they need us. And Heaven help us if we’re not around when they do. The guy whose home was burglarized while he was away on vacation is likely to wonder why the interlopers weren’t arrested. “I got five speeding tickets last year from you guys, but when my house was broken into, you cops were nowhere to be found,” he might say with biting sarcasm. Perhaps that’s because cops are kept busy with jerks that refuse to observe speed limits! I spent most of my police career doing detective work, but during those early days in uniform, I dedicated a lot of my time chasing the bad guys.

One hot summer day in Brooklyn, my partner and I were alert-ed to the sounds of a woman screaming about a block away. We pulled up to the scene of a bare-chested man holding a machete and moving stealthily toward the frightened young woman, who was lying on the sidewalk with her hands raised to ward off an imminent attack. While my partner got on the radio, I pointed my gun at the would-be butcher and gave him a warning.

His attention turned toward me and he took a few steps in my direction. I cocked my weapon, warned him again, and told him that his future didn’t include a third warning. After acknowledg-ing that my weapon was more formidable than his, he sneeringly put the long-bladed instrument on the ground. As was common in such close encounters with homicide, the guy had discovered that his girlfriend was less than faithful, so he had decided to dismem-ber her. He was arrested, and she was grateful to us for keeping her from going all to pieces over the guy.

Later that same day, I stopped a driver for zooming past a red light. As I wrote out the ticket, he exclaimed, “Why don’t you guys do some real police work instead of always harassing people?”
