With the new year starting Lincoln would like to reach out to the residents to see if there is any new interest in become an advisory member. Residents are invited to join us for a luncheon to discuss roles and responsibilities for the new 2017 season. For questions or more information please call your district office. Meet and greet will be at the Ocotillo Community Center from 12:00-2:00pm.

We are looking to commit at least 3 members to be involved in planning events sponsored by Lincoln and be a voice for the community.

LEAVING FOR THE HOLIDAYS? If you are planning on leaving the area to visit friends and family during the holiday, please stop by our office and fill out an extended absence form. This will let Lincoln know where you will be and your care takers information in case of an emergency. You never know what could happen while you are away. Give yourself the peace of mind knowing your home will be cared for.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS It is always fun to get into the spirit of the season by setting up festive decorations! Please keep in mind the safety rules for all base housing to ensure an enjoyable season for everyone:Make sure all lights hung outside the home are weather proof. Be sure to not overload outlets with too many plugs and extension cords. Be sure to always use surge protectors. Please review the guidelines in your combat center orders. Decorations are only allowed to be on from 1800-2200Ensure candles are not left unattended or that your tree is not placed near any sources of heat. Please keep in mind when placing your decorations that it is against Combat Center Orders to climb on your rooftops.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE INSPECTIONIf your home has not yet been inspected for preventative maintenance it will be completed before the end of December. Please be on the lookout for letters that are being passed out notifying residents when the preventative maintenance will be complete. If you have any questions, or to schedule please contact your district office.

HEATERIt’s that time of the year again, time to turn on that heater. With the weather cooling down please be sure to remember when turning on your heater for first time, there will be a slight burning smell. It should last no longer than 30 min. If your smoke detector goes off or you have any concerns, please call Lincoln at your Service immediately. Please remember you are still responsible for calling in a service ticket every 30 days to change out air filter.

DOG PARK REMINDERDogs are to be leashed at all times when not in designated dog park areas. It is a safety concern when they are running loose and can be considered a neighborhood nuisance. Please be courteous to your fellow dog owners when in the dog park. Pick up after your pet and please do not allow your dogs to dig in the dog park it creates an unsafe area for both owners and dogs alike. We ask that all residents follow the dog park rules posted. If you have any questions or concerns, please call your district office.

• Use real dishes and flatware, instead of serving food on paper or Styrofoam at holiday parties. If there aren’t enough to go around, use recycled paper products, or use plastic plates and cups, which can be washed and used over and over again. Cheap cloth napkins are also a great alternative and a bit fancier. Choose darker colors when buying for staining. This can become a year round ritual saving you green and living green. • Send an e-card with a photo of your family and a holiday wish, or an e-vite if you are hosting a party, instead of wasting paper (and stamps!) on traditional greeting cards. • Reduce wrapping by making it part of the present. Put gifts in a basket, terra cotta garden pot, or woven bag. Use ribbon to tie a bow on larger presents. • Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans throw away a million EXTRA tons [900,000 metric tons] of garbage each week, including holiday wrapping and packaging. • If every family reused just 2 feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. • According to one U.S. Department of Energy study, if everyone replaced their conventional holiday light strings with LEDs, at least two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity could be saved in a month. The savings would be enough to power 200,000 homes for a year.

DECEMBER: Going Green this Christmas

• In the winter, set your thermostat at 60 degrees Fahrenheit when you are sleeping or away. Set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you are at home. This will save 10 percent or more on your heating bills every winter. • The sun’s energy can have a noticeable effect on the temperature in your home, especially from windows facing south and west. Keep window shades and drapes open during winter months to let in the sun’s radiant heat. • Don’t depend on thermostat settings; go by your own comfort. Keep the temperature where you are comfortable wearing a light sweater. • When the house is cold, don’t “overset” the thermostat for temperature recovery. The house won’t heat any faster. • Use ceiling fans to circulate warm air - reversible ceiling fans are best, as they can circulate warm air without passing a breeze over your skin. • Lowering the thermostat by just one degree Fahrenheit can reduce energy use by 3 percent. • If you are going out of town for the holidays, please unplug your decorative lights and unplug any appliances you are not using. TVs and clocks are really the only things that need to remain plugged in.
