framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate18 Framing of the images is decent on the cover and the contents though they arent edited too well. The image on the double page spread is very poorly taken and implemented into the magazine no relevance to genre or music.

using a variety of shot distances as appropriate28 The medium/longshots and angles used work well however they dont quite fit well with the rest of the piece. The image used on the front cover is placed at the right size and distance however the image on the contents page looks quite big and isnt of the level of importance needed to be the size that it is. The image used on the double page spread is very poor as it is not framed properly and doesnt look right as it has been left as an individual image, no editing or interesting features

shooting material appropriate to the task set28 The image used on the front cover is slightly relevant to the genre and can communicate the fact that it is a music magazine because of the headphones. However, the girl on the cover doesnt look like a music artist both in what shes wearing and the way she is positioned. On the contents page she is positioned on a piano which is a complete contrast to the photo on the cover page. This creates confusion as to the type of music that the magazine is selling and promoting. The image on the double page spread is completely irrelevant to the fact that it is a music magazine and it poorly shot and positioned.

selecting mise-en-scne including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting18 The colours used arent very appealing whilst they complement each other. They are consistent through the magazine but do not create a nice visual. The mise-en-scene is poor; especially in the image on the double page spread and the setting it completely inappropriate as she is in what seems like a classroom inappropriate for a music artist. Also the way the girl in the images is positioned looks unprofessional and irrelevant. She does not communicate music artist in where she is, the way she looks, is dressed or stood.

manipulating photographs as appropriate to the context for presentation, including cropping and resizing30 Whilst the images arent great, they have been cropped and resized to a decent standard In order to fit the magazine. However they havent been edited well if they have been edited at all. The image on the contents page looks very large and the image doesnt have enough importance in order to justify its size.

accurately using language and register28 The writing is of a very basic level and isnt very informative. The text on the front cover in particular is very vague and doesnt offer anything of interest. Also, on the front cover, Justin Biebers name has been cut off which is odd as he is a major star within the pop genre. There are also grammatical and spelling mistakes that are regular.

appropriately integrating illustration and text20 The text and images are placed in a decent way, however they dont really communicate the genre and the text offers no anchorage to the images therefore we dont really know why the image is there as it isnt really of any relevance in terms of the image.

showing understanding of conventions of layout and page design

26 The page layout and design is of a very basic standard with minimal understanding of layout options. The images and text are placed well enough so as not to obstruct each other, but they arent placed well enough to be considered eye catching to an audience. There are some elements that obstruct each other which make the magazine look messy and unattended to, such as the random classified graphic on the contents page.

showing awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size30 There are significant variations in font size on the contents page which distinguish the article from the brief description underneath it. Also in terms of mastheads and headlines, the text is in two different sizes so that it stands out as being different.

using ICT appropriately for the task set30 The programmes necessary have been used correctly here, though not to the best standard.

Summary Comment:In summary, I feel that this magazine is very poor indeed and hasnt really been thought out very well in terms of the images, colours or layout. The images dont adhere to the genre well and dont communicate what the genre is even supposed to be. The colours do not appeal to the eye and dont stay consistent throughout or make themselves clear as being the colour scheme. The text is clear but there are both spelling and grammatical errors throughout and overall it just looks unclean, unedited and unprofessional. MEDIA STUDIES AFL 2016
