framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate42 The framing and shots used are effective as they are visually pleasing and look good in terms of looking professional and as though the image shave been shot for a real music magazine. The graphics and elements used over the top are effective and work with the images. However, the image used on the contents page is oddly frames and positioned as the people arent at the same height therefore the image looks slightly wonky. As its a larger image its harder to ignore and the framing looks like the tops of the girls heads are almost cut off. This looks unprofessional and untidy.

using a variety of shot distances as appropriate43 The shot distances that have been used are appropriate and work very well in this magazine. The image on the front cover in particular works well as the medium shot gives us a clear view of the artist without them being to close or too far away. Also the artist is making direct eye contact with the camera which works well and draws us in as an audience. The medium long shot used on the contents age looks odd and doesnt make a lot of sense as the way the people are positioned looks odd and irrelevant.

shooting material appropriate to the task set45 The images used are very effective and the person on the cover looks very connected with the R&B genre as she adheres to the conventions through the way she is stood, the way she looks and what she is wearing. The image on the contents page does look slightly odd but is still relevant and representative of the genre. The third image however on the double page spread

selecting mise-en-scne including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting47 The mise-en-scene used in the front cover works well as the costume is consistent and relevant to the genre of R&B. Also, the colour scheme is relevant and works well as well as remaining consistent throughout the entire magazine. Whilst the photo on the contents page could have been shot and framed slightly better, it works well with the genre and the use of lighting and shadows is effective. The setting in the image on the double page spread isnt really relevant as it looks like she is in a ballet studio which has no relevance at all to the fact that she is an R&B artist. Also there is no use of lighting here.

manipulating photographs as appropriate to the context for presentation, including cropping and resizing40 The images are mostly resized well in relevance to what has been placed around them and where they are on the pages. However, the image on the contents page hasnt been cropped well as the shadows make it look as though the tops of the artists heads have been cut. Also, as the image isnt quite a midshot it looks slightly odd as it has been blown up to a large size which emphasises this. The text on the contents page should be the main focus rather than an image that doesnt hold much significance or anchorage. Also, the image on the double page spread looks like it has been made too big for what it is. The contents of the image arent significant enough for it to be blown up to that size.

accurately using language and register40 The language used across the whole magazine is consistent and relevant to the genre which will help to attract and audience that relate to the kind of language that has been used as it is the same sort of language that is used in the music that the magazine promotes.

appropriately integrating illustration and text40 The integration of text and images works well across the magazine, however I dont like the sizing and typography that has been used on the headline on the front cover as it is too small and doesnt stand out enough. There are also a couple of bits where the text looks really different and there is a lot of variation in the different sizes and font types which make it look slightly odd.

showing understanding of conventions of layout and page design

49 The understanding and use of the page designs and layout is good and conventional which creates a comfortable and familiar image for the audience to see. This gives the magazine a more professional feel.

showing awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size50 The use and understanding of variation in text sizes is used well and consistently throughout the magazine.

using ICT appropriately for the task set50 ICT has been used well and appropriately to complete the task set.

Summary Comment:Overall this magazine works well and has been made in such a way that it has a polished, professional feel to it. However I think that it might have been better if some of the images such as the ones on the double page spread had been thought out a little more. MEDIA STUDIES AFL 2016
