October Letter from the Clergy
Dear Friends
As I write this, it is more or less the thirtieth anniversary of
my ordination. I was ordained in Guildford Cathedral by the Bishop
of Guildford, the Rt Revd Michael Adie, on September 30th 1984.
This was the nearest Sunday to the feast of St Michael and All
Angels, Michaelmas, on September 29th. I was ordained at
Michaelmas because that feast day is one of the traditional days
for ordaining people. I can still remember the day. It was a
beautifully sunny Sunday. I, with the others who were being
ordained with me, had been away on silent retreat for four days
with a small community of elderly nuns in their convent overlooking
the very beautiful Devil’s Punchbowl in Surrey. We were only allowed
to start talking again as we left the convent to go together to the
Cathedral. When we processed into the Cathedral we found that it
was absolutely crammed full of family and friends and members of
the congregations of the churches where we were to serve. The
ordination service was truly inspiring and afterwards we all went off
to parties! It was a very grand day.
I began my life in the Church of England in a place called Cranleigh,
down on the border between Surrey and Sussex. The first thing I
had to realise was that I had not taken on a new job, instead I had
to come to terms with the fact that I had entered upon a
completely new way of life and maybe a unique way of life. I now see
that on that Sunday at the end of September in 1984 I had
absolutely no idea what the next thirty years as a priest in the
Church of England would bring. I still reckon that over those thirty
years I have seen more of life and been involved with a greater
diversity of things and people than I could ever have done in pretty
well any conventional career.
My life in the Church of England has taken me from comfortable
Surrey commuter land in Cranleigh and Godalming, to suburban
London, to the world of this country’s prisons and, through that
world, to involvement with an enormous variety of people and world
faiths. My life in the Church of England has taken me to the
University of Kent at Canterbury, where I did my doctorate, to
rural North Yorkshire and now to the city of Leeds. I have had
privileged access to the lives of many, many people – in good times
and bad - and I have had the opportunity to do all sorts of things
that I never expected to do. I have been involved in more than one
major building project. I have been on the board of a small company.
Involvement with diocesan boards and the ecumenical world has
taken me into parishes all over West and North Yorkshire and has
taken into the life of churches of different denominations. I have
been a school governor for most of those thirty years and I have
really enjoyed my close involvement the life of those schools, not
least St John’s school here. And finally my life in the Church of
England has brought me to Roundhay. I have stayed here far longer
than I originally thought and I have grown to like the place and its
people very much. And through it all there has been the life and
worship of the churches I have served.
And now all of this is coming to an end, for this month I retire. This
feels like the right time to make this move. But I am really grateful
that I have so much to look back on and I hope there will be new and
different things to look forward to.

Stop………………………………………
Are you bored and constantly staying that there is nothing on the telly!
Well we may have the answer.
Tuesday Guides urgently need an extra pair of hands to help with the
running of our unit. After 4 years our Unit helper Lorna Gill has
decided to leave guides and pursue other interests. This means that
there will only be Jeanette and myself to run the unit, along with our
YL (Young Leader) Victoria.
Can you spare 90 minutes on a Tuesday (7-8.30pm) and be that extra
pair of hands that we urgently need to help us continue to provide our
guides with a wide range of activities and outings.
Guiding is a great opportunity to give something back to the community
and more importantly the Guides that come to meetings each Tuesday.
No training is required, but you would be required to complete a CRB
check (no cost involved), as this is a requirement of Guiding for all
regular helpers.
If you would like any additional information, please speak to either
Jeanette or myself or contact me on the email address below.

They have runners, cyclists and trekkers who travel the world to raise money for much welcomed projects in MHA homes. One appeal is for music therapy which can unlock the memory of people with dementia others may be for the redevelopment of existing homes or new developments. That seems to be The all-important question That is aggravating me Oh, where have I put by spectacles? My confusion grows and grows, Til I look into the mirror And they’re there .... above my nose _________________________________________________________________

Thorner News
We seem no sooner to be writing about Summer
holidays than the first of the Autumn leaves are falling and
October is upon us once again !! We had a very successful coffee
morning held on Saturday September 13th for St Gemma’s
Hospice; apologies that I said it was AFC and MHA which we held
earlier in the year. However, many thanks to all who came and
supported us and made the event SO worthwhile. We raised
£300 in two hours ! for St. Gemma’s.
Our next coffee morning will take place on Sat November 22nd,
from 10am to 12 noon, so please make a date in your diaries now !!
This will be our Christmas Fayre where we will have our usual
cake stall including Christmas cakes, bric-a- brac stall, bacon
butties on sale etc. plus Christmas cards for sale and other
Christmas goodies; do come along and join us if you can. The
money raised at this event will be for our Chapel funds so we
hope you can support us.
The changes in Pastoral Oversight for Thorner has yet to be
decided as I prepare this article for the October publication.
Hopefully, we’ll have clarification by the November Broadcast.
However, our close ties with Oakwood will remain and a monthly
bulletin from Thorner will still appear in future Broadcasts.

THE CHARITY GIVING TEAM SUPPORTS
OUR HARVEST OF TALENTS
STARTED IN SEPTEMBER AND WILL FINISH
ON SUNDAY 12 OCTOBER
AT OUR CHURCH PARADE HARVEST SERVICE
The poster is now available for you to sign up to offer your talents - window cleaning - gardening - hair cutting - baking - baby sitting - shopping - driving - anything you are good at for everyone to bid for.
This is the time to think about your talents and what YOU can offer. You can then sit back and watch the offers come in.
This is a tried and tested way to raise money for Methodist Homes for the Aged who do marvellous work caring for thousands of older people (there are six projects in Leeds) and one of the most important fundraising events we hold for the charity each year.
Keep looking at the list to make sure you don't miss any new additions and bid for anything that takes your fancy. Keep an eye out though, to make sure no-one has gazumped you.
You'll be surprised at how much money we can raise for MHA.
2 October - Holy Communion
9 October - Quiet Prayer
16 October - Holy Communion
23 October - Quiet Prayer
30 October - Quiet Prayer
all from 09.15 to 09.45
Please join us on any or all of the above dates. For lots of us there are few
opportunities in the week when we can stop and be still to allow ourselves
to be aware of the presence of God. We will aim to encourage each other
to do this regularly on Thursdays.
The calming influence of prayer, that time when we consciously
contemplate our relationship with the universe and its Creator and when we
see ourselves as part of the Creator's harmonious plan, allows us to flow
with that plan rather than trying to make our own. Every moment in some
way begins to serve Him rather than ourselves. And this brings a peace and
harmony no plan of ours ever could.
Loving Creator God, We gaze in wonder
At the splendour of your creation. Rich carpeted fields of yellowing grain And overflowing baskets of ripe fruit. A banquet of fine wines and rich food, A feast spread out for all to share. Help us to learn from your generosity
How to share our bread with the hungry And to commit ourselves to preparing
A banquet for all peoples, A generous feast for all to share.
Amen
Nostalgia Meetings – Everyone Welcome 1.15pm on 2nd October 2014 – World War One and 1.15 on 16th October 2014 – To be decided
Since we began on 17th October 2013 we have had 11 very successful
meetings. Attendances have been as low as seven and as high as
sixteen, healthy numbers for this sort of group.
Our chats have covered a variety of subjects: First memories; History of
Roundhay Methodist Church; Blackburn Aircraft Factory; Shopping; The Lido and Children’s Day and Roundhay Park; Jack’s visits to Seacroft
Hospital with a 90 year interval; Christmas; Healthcare; The place I call
‘Home’; Pocket money and treats; Trams and Transport; Organisations
and Groups. We did slip in a session trying to date an old map of Leeds. We think we managed it – “just after the Second World War”. Who would
have thought looking at an old street map could be so interesting and
would trigger so many fond memories?
We are hoping to put together a very special display about World War
One in time for Remembrance Day. It all depends on how much information we are able to gather. You could help by looking through
your family archives, asking questions - even doing a little research if
you want to. I have prepared a hand-out with useful tips and internet sources which you might find helpful. You will find it at
www.oakwoodchurch.info/nostalgia.html .
Our memories aren’t restricted to those who fought. There were major
impacts on family life during World War One and lingering effects going
forward. We hope you will gather family stories, photographs, reports,
records, medals, and letters – anything that makes memories of World War One meaningful to your family.
My Grandfather fought. I am fortunate to have a copy of his service record, a photograph of him in his uniform and an unusual tale about his
younger brother. We don’t have Grandfather’s medals, they were stolen
from his home. What I do have is a better understanding of the effect it had on him as a person, and compassion for the difficult man I thought I
knew.
Many of you will have objects, stories, photographs that you would be
willing to share. If you do please bring them along on at 1.15pm on 2nd
October, or just come and listen.
At www.oakwoodchurch.info/roundhaystjohn.html you will find
information about the war dead remembered at Roundhay St John. I
have been trying to put together something of their lives – a more
personal view than gravestone or memorial – and am hoping to have this research completed by October.
It has been difficult emotionally to gather information about boys and
young men who lived or had connections here in Oakwood. The sense of loss of promising young life creeps into one’s emotions all too often. Their
stories deserve to be told. We are the people they fought and died for, so
please find whatever you can and share it with us.

2nd Roundhay Rainbows
We meet on Tuesday evenings 5.45 – 6.45 and work with girls age
5 – 7.
Currently we have 24 girls who come each week and they are a
wonderful group of girls to work with, we have a very supportive
group of parents as well who are helping each week. We offer a
variety of activities, including baking – crafts – badgework –
games – singing – drama – fundraising – outings/visits and
sometimes have visits from other people on various topics. If you
feel your daughter would like to become part of our Rainbow
group, speak to Debra (details below)
At the moment we are desperately struggling with leadership, 2
of our leaders have just, this week, stepped down leaving 1
leader and a helper, we also have someone else who comes to help
fitting it in around her working commitments. You will appreciate
this is not enough, we have a parents rota up and running and
currently relying on guiders from other units to help out, but we
really need 2 more people to come onto the staff team. If you
think you might be interested, do have a word with Debra
2400884 or any other guider, look forward to hearing from you.

Safeguarding Review: A message from the Methodist Church The Rev Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church has written an open letter to the Methodist people. Copies of the letter are displayed in the church. The letter reminds us that the Methodist Church has carried out a Review of safeguarding cases over the last 60 years involving children and/or vulnerable adults. If anyone has concerns about any historic incident, there still is time to bring it to the notice of the Review. Please see the letter and as soon as possible contact your minister or the Circuit Safeguarding Officer for guidance and support. If you want a personal copy of the letter contact the minister or the Circuit Safeguarding Officer.

The Ladies Evening Club
The Evening Club has 25 members with an average attendance of
21. We meet monthly in the New Room at 8pm on the 2nd
Wednesday. Our meetings begin with the notices followed by a
hymn, a reading and a prayer. Then the speaker is introduced
giving a talk which lasts from 30-45 minutes. We end with a hot
drink and a biscuit.
We have a wide variety of speakers. This coming year we have
The Rev. George Bailey, Deacon Sheila Dawson, Ann Johnson, a
speaker from the Sylvia Wright Trust, a slide show on Norway
(which is an open evening) and the history of hats. We also have
a very popular Christmas Evening and close the session with a
dinner.
Any lady can join us and you can be assured of a very warm
welcome when you do. So give us a try – you won’t regret it.
