From Father Doug Rituals and Catholic Funerals The easy, graphic, and dismissive presentation of death in contemporary entertainment is disheartening. Some character, in the course of a few hours, may end a number of lives as unimaginable horror may appear graphically, even dramatized in slow motion to assure our absorption. Such violence in the video game world seems to be generally accepted. The most troubling of all this is the dismissive nature of what has happened: a human being’s life has been ended – what about that person’s loved ones? Why do we not see the funeral? Where is the grief? Death is some-thing we fear, for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet, we are entertained by human death in denial of this fear and without acknowledgement of grief. I have seen advertisements from secular organizations proposing some sort of simplification of death as they encourage cremation without “ritual complications.” Loving rituals are behavioral patterns that make us truly human. People celebrate milestones of life with rituals: birthdays, baptisms, first Communions, Confirmations, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and promotions, to name a few. The avoidance of ritual at the end of life denies the importance of all that has happened during our time between conception and death. Funerals are a critical component of our Catholic culture of life. When a loved one dies, we need to remember the time we have shared – remembrance is at the essence of loving behavior. The loss of a loved one’s presence in our time is sorrow that we need to share as loving memories seal the book of life. Every life is important in the eyes of God. When we are baptized, we are baptized into the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. In baptism, we become adopted children of God; this is more important than any human achievement – this puts us in a personal relationship with the Creator of all things and makes us each singularly and individually important in the eyes of God, our Father. This is worthy of ritual! An important pre-funeral ritual is the Visitation (Wake, Vigil), where we focus our remembrance on the deceased. The reality of the present has us

remembering what we have lost. These are opportune times for eulogies. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection points us to the promised outcome of faith – redemption and eternal life with resurrected bodies (remaining who we are). The reality of the present has us hoping for that day when we will all be together again. This is about the hope of our faith in God. A hope centered on that final day when Christ will return and the bodies of the faithful will, through the merits of Christ, be resurrected and delivered from evil. Eulogies detract from this sacred space. If eulogies are desired, they should be at the luncheon following the funeral. Although cremation is permitted before a funeral, the Church prefers that cremation be delayed until after the funeral liturgy. We reverence the body as the housing for our spirit to grow in faith and love in God’s material creation. This body being buried is the body that will be resurrected in glory, very likely from ashes or dust. We prefer to reverence the body in its state as life ended rather than later in the process. Without undue delay, the body or complete cremains should be interred or buried. This puts us in the harsh present and universal reality of death. It is the punctuation mark of life going on after life is lost. It recognizes the finality of death; it is time to let this sacred life return to God as the grief process leads toward healing. End of life rituals acknowledge and emphasize our individual dignity as embodied spiritual beings. When love becomes bracketed by death, our faith is our hope. Our nature as integrated beings of spirit and flesh is all we know. We need faithful reassurance that this is also our promised eternal nature at the resurrection when we are reunited with our loved ones. Our religious rituals reflect to God our love of our gift of life. They reaffirm the promise of the resurrection that helps us through our grief. Our faithful rituals point to our hoped-for eternity, when suffering, death, and all our mortal fears and tears will be forever ended; when we trivialize this reality, we become dismissive of the fulfilling promise of faith.

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the departed, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office.

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. Godparents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by appointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… If you wish to receive an anointing please call the parish office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office.

Por el Padre Doug Rituales y Funerales Catolicos La presentacion mas facil y grafica de la muerte es descorazonadora. Algun personaje, en el curso de unas pocas horas quiza finalice un numero de vidas con inimaginable horror y lo haga aparecer graficamente, aun dramatizando en camara lenta para asegurarse de nuestra absorcion. Esta violencia, en el mundo de los juegos de video parece haber sido aceptada en forma general. El problema mas grande de todo esto, es la forma natural en que ha sucedido: una vida hu-mana ha terminado - que sucede con los seres queridos de esa persona? Porque no vemos el funeral? Donde esta el do-lor? La muerte es algo a lo que tememos, por nosotros mismos y por nuestros seres queridos. Aun nos encontramos en-tretenidos en la muerte humana, sin aceptar el miedo y desconociendo el dolor. Yo he visto comerciales de organizaciones seculares, proponiendo algo como simplificacion de la muerte mientras el-los convencen y animan a una cremacion sin "rituales complicados". Los rituales de amor son cadenas de comportamiento que nos hacen verdaderamente humanos. La gente siempre ha celebrado la vida con rituales: los cumpleanos, bautismos, primeras comuniones, confirmaciones, bodas, aniversarios, graduaciones y promociones, por nombrar algunos. El evitar el ritual del fin de la vida, niega la importancia de todo lo que ha sucedido durante nuestro tiempo entre la concepcion y la muerte. Los funerales son un componente critico en nuestra cultura de vida. Cuando un ser querido muere, necesitamos recor-dar el tiempo en que compartimos - recordar es la escensia del comportamiento humano. La perdida de un ser querido hace presente nuestro tiempo de sufrimiento y es cuando necesitamos compartir las memorias de amor selladas en el li-bro de la vida. Toda vida es importante a los hojos de Dios. Cuando somos bautizados, somos bautizados a la vida, sufrimiento, muerte y resureccion de Cristo Jesus. En el bautismo, comenzamos a ser hijos adoptivos de Dios; esto es mas importante de cualquier logro humano, esto nos pone a nosotros en una relacion personal con el Creador de todas las cosas y nos hace singularmente e individualmente importante a los ojos de Dios, nuestro Padre. Esto es un ritual que vale la pena! Un ritual importante de un funeral es la Visitacion (velorio, vigilia), cuando enfocamos nuestros recuerdos en el fallecimiento. La realidad del presente es que nos deja recordar lo que hemos perdido. Este es un tiempo oportuno para elogios. La Misa de Funeral de la resureccion nos apunta a recibir las promesas de nuestra Fe- redencion y vida con cuerpos resucitados (recordandonos quienes somos). La realidad de el presente, nos hace tener esperanza de el dia en que estare-mos juntos otra vez. Esto es acerca de la esperanza que tenemos en nuestra fe en Dios. La esperanza centrada en ese dia final en que Cristo regresara y los cuerpos de los creyentes,estaran por los meritos de Cristo, resucitados y liberados del mal. Si se desean elogios, ellos deberan presentarse en el comedor seguido del funeral. Aunque la cremacion sea permitida antes del funeral, la Iglesia prefiere que la cremacion sea hasta despuers de la litur-gia del funeral. Hacemos reverencia al cuerpo que le dio cabida al espiritu, para crecer en Fe y amor en la creacion mate-rial de Dios. Este cuerpo ha sido sepultado como el cuerpo que sera resucitado en gloria, muy probable de la cenizas o del polvo. Preferimos darle reverencia al cuerpo, en el estado en que su vida ha terminado en lugar de mas tarde en el proceso. Sin mas tardanzas, el cuerpo o restos de creamacion debera ser enterrado o sepultado. Esto nos pone a nosotros en el presente de nuestra realidad universal de la muerte. Es el punto final de nuestra vida. Se reconoce la realidad de la muerte; es tiempo de dejar esta vida sagrada regresar a Dios, mientras el dolor nos guia hacia el alivio. Los rituales del fin de la vida, nos dan conocimiento y enfatiza nuestra dignidad individual, como seres humanos y espirituales. Cuando el amor se interrumpe por la muerte, nuestra fe es nuestra esperanza. Somos seres integrados por naturaleza, con espiritu y carne, es todo lo que sabemos. Necesitamos por fe tener la seguridad de que esto es tambien una promesa eterna de resureccion cuando nos reuniremos con nuestros seres queridos. Nuestros rituales religiosos refle-jan a Dios nuestro amor y nuestro amor al reglalo de la vida. Ellos reafirman la promesa de la resureccion que nos ayuda a travez de nuestro dolor. Nuestros rituales de fe, no apuntan a nuestra esperanza en la eternidad, cuando el sufrimiento, la muerte y todos nuestros temores mortales y lagrimas se terminaran para siempre.Cuando aceptemos esta realidad, comenzaremos a ser liberados y llenos de las promesas de fe.

Music Ministries at Guardian Angels Upcoming Angel’s Choir Mass

Angel’s Choir, comprised of 3rd through 5th graders from ANY school, will be singing for the

5 pm mass on Saturday, October 15. Rehearsal will be that day at 3:30 pm for 5:00 o’clock mass. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Teen Cantor Choir will be singing Sunday, October 16th for the 10 a.m. Mass! This choir is composed of 6th-12th grade cantors from any school. Guardian Angels Quilting Quilting will start October 20th at 8:00 a.m. in St. Francis Hall. Quilts will be made for Love INC & Bountiful Basket as well as anyone who would like to purchase a quilt during the year. We need stitchers and knitters.
