A s 2013 draws to a close, I present to you our final newsletter of the year. This

is the time of year that we can all sit back, take a well-deserved break and look at what we have achieved in the past year. 2013 has been a glorious year for our respective clubs, with increased membership and a wealth of events that have taken place over the months.

At this time we can now look forward to the future with a tingling anticipation of what is in store for 2014. When we have had what is really a superb year, and all is said and done, it is sometimes hard to imagine a more wonderful year ahead. Yet that is what awaits us.

The upcoming holidays are a time for family relaxation and also a time when we can give ourselves a pat on the back for the goals we achieved and still forgive ourselves for the ones we might have missed. There isn't anyone in the world who can honestly say that he or she hit every target every time, but celebrating those that we hit is an achievement in itself.

Then suddenly the New Year is upon us and it seems that once again the world is our oyster. It is like a new dawn with a vista open before us that gives hope and inspiration for love and friendship – probably the two most important things for every human being – success in our business activities as well as our leisure ones, and continued good health and fitness. Our relationships with our families and friends will continue to grow and expand.

2014 will be our best year ever. There is no doubt in our minds.

As we look forward to the year ahead with excitement and anticipation, I wish you all the peace of the holidays and every blessing and happiness that I wish myself.

It all began when Thomas Edison unveiled the first ever device capable of recording and reproducing sound – his famous phonograph – in the year 1877. Many years later, in the 1940s, the vinyl record was invented and became the first music player to reach the masses, and filled their lives with music. It was a development of the old gramophone, with a vinyl disc that was used for recording and reproducing sound.

With the passage of time, tape reels and then 8-track tapes came into existence in the late 1970s. This tape was made of ¼-inch magnetic tape housed in a plastic cartridge. It became the most popular and successful commercial music player of its time, and was a common sight in cars during the automobile boom of the 70s. Eventually, with the advancement of technology, compact cassettes were launched for music lovers. Such cassettes consisted of a comparatively small plastic case with magnetic tape inside them. They were easier to operate and served better than the previous media.

From vinyl records to cassettes to CDs to digital music players, the way

we listen to music has definitely been an evolution worth looking back on.

There is no denying the fact that music has always been one of the most important sources of entertainment. Music is so addictive that it is hard to imagine our lives without it. In fact, listening to music reduces stress levels and refreshes minds. This is why the invention of music players has completely revolutionised the world of entertainment.

The introduction of compact discs in the early 1990s was the next big step in the evolution of music players. A CD is a metal disc coated in clear plastic, which has digital data written onto it with a laser. Later on, CDs were also used to store pictures, computer documents and songs in digital file format. Their popularity soared because they could be played on computers, VCD and DVD players, besides the original CD players. CDs have really played a key role in entertaining innumerable people, and we all remember them fondly, don’t we?

Thereafter came the clearest and the best quality digital music players, which can really be credited for entertaining the world. Apple’s iPod was the next invention, introduced just eight years ago although it seems like ages, and created a big sensation in the world of music players. With a storage capacity of 1,000 songs, a compact size, and easy portability, the original iPod garnered worldwide fame in no time.

Nowadays, trendy smartphones have taken over iPods in serving people with their amazing capabilities. Along with features like memory, networking and processors, they have special file transfer properties wherein one can easily download and upload songs through the internet, in digital format. Additionally, personal computers, laptops and tablets with music software have also added to the charm of music in the lives of people everywhere.

Ever Seen An Archer Shooting Arrows Or A Jockey Riding A Horse?Or Both At The Same Time? That’s Horseback Archery!

Horseback archery is an interesting sport, as it is actually a combination of two sports. We are all well aware

of the sport of archery, where the archer shoots arrows from a bow. We have also seen the renowned sport of jockey horse riding. Both these sports are very popular and need tremendous skills and practice to be performed. But when performed together, they become the magnificent spectacle of horseback archery.

It originated during the period of the Eurasian nomads, Iranians and Indians in ancient times, as a method of warfare, and later became popular among the Mongols and the Turks in the Middle Ages. However, its popularity declined in the 16th century with the invention of firearms for horseback cavalry. But with the passage of time, horseback archery is now regaining popularity as a sport in various parts of the world.

Originally, it was not a sport, but a skill used by ancient people to fight their enemies or to hunt for food. But now people have adopted it as a sport, and there are professional horseback archers who are highly passionate in honing their skills. Also, horseback archery competitions are organised in order to let the archers demonstrate their skills and entertain the audiences. This sport requires great attentiveness and presence of mind, as the archers need to take an angle and shoot the bows at the target – all while riding on horseback at galloping speed.

Now there are specialised academies with professional trainers available for those who are willing to learn this sport. They use advanced techniques, high quality horses and bows and arrows to teach modern forms of horseback archery. These modern forms are much more entertaining than past techniques and are worth learning by those who have the interest and resources. The experts also organise regular competitions to keep the learners enthusiastic and on their toes.

For beginners in horseback archery, one first needs to gain expertise in normal archery and horse riding, individually. Once that level is completed, one must start honing one’s skills of hitting a target from the bow while galloping on horseback. It’s no surprise that horseback archery is an intricate sport that requires a lot of both mental and physical strength. But it serves a person with the benefits of being very concentrated and dynamically agile, and is thus worth the effort.

What To Pack For Your Trip

Next to deciding on where you are going and how you will get there, choosing the type of luggage to bring for your trip is probably one of the most important things that you will need to

think about. With so many options to choose from, it can all become rather overwhelming. What type of suitcase do you need? Do you want one with or without wheels, do you need hard shell or soft sided bags? There are pros and cons for each of these.

HARD CASES, SOFT CASESSoft sided cases are reasonably flexible and easy to store, but can offer less protection and may not be as waterproof. It is no fun arriving home from your trip and opening your case to find all your souvenirs in little pieces! Hard shell cases tend to offer more protection, but may be heavier than their softer counterparts. And they can also be quite a bit trickier to store.

DUFFLE BAGS A large cylindrical bag usually made of strong cloth with a drawstring closure at its top, a duffel bag is extremely light yet holds quite a bit of stuff. HAND LUGGAGE Carry-on luggage is something that is able to be stowed either in the overhead locker or under your airplane seat. The maximum measurements for carry-on luggage, recommended by the International Air Travel Association, is 56 cm in length, 45 cm in width and 25 cm in depth. Ladies can take a handbag as well as their carry-on piece on board a flight with them. Remember that these are recommendations by the IATA, and may differ slightly from airline to airline.

Another dilemma can be what to take on an overseas trip. One would say, don’t take too much. Here are suggestions for the top 10 things to pack:

Copies of travel documentsMake sure that you have copies of your passports, itineraries, tickets and travellers cheques, just in case you find that these have been misplaced or worse. Also have a list of contact information and your credit card contact information with you.

Local moneyDon't forget to change your money to some local currency before you leave. Take a small money belt with you; this is handy, as it can be tucked under your clothes and you can keep your passport and other important documents with you, as well as your cash.

Sample size toiletriesNo matter where you are going, you will generally be able to pick up shampoo, conditioner and soap. There’s no need to bring your big bottles from home.

Reading materialTake some books, magazines and a pen on board so that you can be entertained for hours till you reach your destination.

Emergency repairTake a sewing kit, stain remover pads and a laundry bag.

A sleeping mask and earplugsMany a bleary eyed traveller has stumbled off the plane at their destination only to spend the next two days exhausted because the passenger next to them snored louder than a passing train.

KolamsKolam is a form of painting that is drawn using rice powder, chalk or chalk powder, as well as sandstone powder. This painting style originates from South India, and is also practiced in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia today. It is an art form traditionally practised by women and girls.

There are numerous types of kolam patterns, including mathematical and geometric line drawings formed around a matrix of dots. Free-form artwork such as animals as well as any closed shapes can also be drawn.

Christmas Trees On the other hand, a Christmas tree is a decorated tree that is traditionally associated with Christmas celebrations. There are different types of Christmas trees, usually evergreen conifers. These trees include spruce, fir as well as pine. You can also find artificial trees being sold in stores. These trees are usually made of PVC and can come in uncommon colours and even with built- in lighting.

Traditionally, Christmas trees were decorated using edible items such as dates, apples and nuts. During the 18th Century, people started using candles to illuminate their Christmas trees. Below are several traditional items that you can use to decorate your Christmas tree.

The festival of lights, Diwali, is fast approaching, and it’s the time of the year to meet friends, share joyous moments and indulge in a never-ending feast filled with scrumptious delicacies specially made for the occasion.

Diwali is celebrated in India and also in other countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and even in the UK, these days. The grand festival marks the occasion when the evil lord Narakasura was destroyed by Lord Krishna and peace was restored in the land. Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate the five-day festival with oil lamps, flamboyant clothing and, most of all, dozens of sweets to sweeten the occasion.

An evocative spread of Diwali food brings back fond memories and is closely associated with the festival. The variety of items ranging

from Laddoos, Halwas to Mithai and Kheer will simply entice even non-lovers of these items to shed their inhibitions and take part in the festive occasion, tasting every delicacy prepared.

The huge variety of sweets and savory items prepared in the Indian subcontinent on this day will flabbergast anyone with its sheer number. A customary practice of visiting friends and family with decorated sweet boxes made at home prevails in India. The assorted boxes will be filled with all types of morsels and neatly packed to be given out. Sweets are accompanied with Mathiya, lentil flour discs, karanji or ghughra, sev, puris and chirote which are deep fried discs. Murukku, a crunchy side dish and Rava Adhirasam, an exclusive sweet made with Rava and ground sugar, are speciality South Indian delicacies

that are also popular in Malaysia.Sheera is another popular sweet made using cashew nuts, cardamom and raisins.

Monthly Pony Activities for Kids

Every month, the Club hosts an “Own A Pony Day” for the children, which usually falls on a middle Sunday of the month. Half a day of interactive fun with the ponies, the event is meant to familiarise children with the handling of ponies, to build up their confidence in equestrian activities.

Also happening monthly is the “Pony Club Rally”, which features learning via fun activities. The Rally, however, covers more in-depth topics with a bit more focus, for children who are further along the equestrian journey of discovery.

The new Hole 9 was opened on 29th August prior to the Merdeka holiday. Amidst the long Raya holiday, the team managed to complete the grow-in and the preparation on time. We hope this new addition to our Bukit Jalil course will enthral all members alike. So far this is the 7th complete hole being renovated.

Even though the hole was opened for play, please note that the turf is still under the grow-in process. Most of the grass is only two months old and still young. Players should be cautious and give more attention on golf etiquette, especially the kind about preserving the course. To repair the ball marks on greens, replace the divots in fairways, avoid taking divots on practice swings and avoid dragging shoes whilst walking, will help the young course to establish faster.

Keeping the buggies away from the grass also will tremendously help the course in maturing beautifully. If we help these juvenile grasses in their early days, they will mature into a golf course that we all can be proud of.

Currently, two holes are under renovation. The planting of par 4, Hole #12 is now under progress. We had just completed the stolonization (planting) of the fairway, rough and the river’s slope. The grow-in process will take about two months before play is permissible. At this hole, the left side green bunker was split into two to make room for a bigger putting area. A new fairway bunker is in place on the left of the landing area at about 200 metres from the blue tee. For the right side of the hole, all three bunkers remain. In total, Hole 12 will have six bunkers, the most of 18 holes to date.

We started closing Hole 5 for renovation at the end of August. Presently, our team is scrapping the old turf and cutting the mounds previously dumped on the right side of the fairway beside the small stream. We hope we can shape back the hole to its previous contour, giving more perspective of the water hazard.

Once again, the Club Championship was held successfully with 120 participants. The 2-day golf tournament was played over 36 holes of stroke play, with tee-off at 7:45am.

The Men Gross Champion crowned Eddy Loh with a score of 149, while the Ladies Gross Champion went to Stella Chau, the 7-time champion (2002 – 2006, 2010 and 2012 – 2013) with a score of 159 respectively. The annual healthy and exciting competition – Swimming Gala 2013 – was back with 50 participants categorised in Freestyle and Breaststroke under 12 years old. The swimming pool area was packed with parents and the audience showing their support towards the whole event. Participants as young as 7 years old had proven their skills by exhausting their strength through to the finishing point, carrying the value of sportsmanship as swimmers. The competition championship went to Ryan Lim Hun Sing (boys category) and Emilia Seng Sze Ying (girls category).

Sri Bayu Restaurant was flooded with 80 orphans from both Shelter Homes and Rumah Perlindungan Nur Qaseh respectively, to celebrate the Pre-Raya festivities. The annual charity event was held successfully with invited famous local artists such as Ani Mayuni, Halil Chik, Norsheila Amin, Norish Karman, just to name a few, who spiced up the event with performances and activities with the children.

The children also took this opportunity to show their talents by performing dances and songs that caught the eye and touched the heart of the audience. Liaison Committee members who attended contributed cash, which was given away as “Duit Raya”.

Both the charitable homes were happy to receive the contributions (in cash and kind) donated by the management, members and sponsors. Once again, we thank you for your kind generosity in making this event a successful one.

Before the school holidays ended, 40 participants got to polish themselves up with table manners and dining etiquette with accredited trainer Margaret Yap. Participants aged from 8 to 15 years old, dressed in casual formal, managed to upgrade themselves in sitting manners, using table napkins and dining utensils, then practised with a 3-course Western meal with real settings and real pace.

In fact, this event was again a success with raving reviews, where parents were happy to see their children learn and change in their eating habits. Dining Etiquette Workshop has carved out the learning skills that will last for a lifetime among these children, and they will be able to practice it either at home or in restaurants.

Refurbishment of the Indoor Arena

First of all, two backhoes began stripping the existing sand of the Indoor Arena. Then a back pusher loaded the sand onto two lorries that carted it away to the riding school arena and the sand storage yard. What was going on? It was the beginning of the refurbishment of our Indoor Arena!

The ground of the riding school needed levelling again. To do this, we brought in a backhoe to level the sand in the school area as the process of sand-removal continued in the Indoor Arena. A compactor and an installation rake arrived at the site, where they proceeded to compact the ground.

Just how massive is our arena? In total, 71 loads – an amazing 781 tons – of quarry dust was installed. On top of this, another tractor was brought in to finish the raking, whereupon sand-mixing commenced. By the end of the process, a matching 781 tons of sand had been laid in the Indoor Arena. Then new doors were designed and fabricated.

In preparation for opening those new doors to our members, came the process of clearing, cleaning and fixing up of the site before it was watered using a tanker. The Indoor Arena is now open for the inspection and enjoyment of our Club members!

Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort recently held a Pamper Yourself Day for all the members and guests at the main clubhouse. Providing services from body massages to hairdo, facials, waxing, henna tattoos, glitter tattoos, and manicures and pedicures, it received more than the expected crowd on that day. Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort together with The Saddle Coffeehouse celebrated the holy month of Ramadan with the theme of “Ala Kampung”. The celebration was held throughout the month with more than 100 traditional Malay dishes served every day to satisfy those cravings. There were also live Ghazal performances that kept everyone locked into the nostalgic mood while enjoying their food.

Batik Canting For Kids School Holiday Programme (2nd Jun 2013)

“Batik Canting” Demo On RTM 1’S “Selamat Pagi Malaysia” Segment (30th May 2013)

A fun and creative event! The kids of KDE enjoyed their school holidays with a chance to create “canting” batik during the Batik Canting Workshop for Kids on 2nd June 2013. The workshop, which was open to both members and non-members, was divided into two categories:

1. Colouring ready-made batik designs 2. “Canting” and colouring their own created batik designs

After all the creative fun, the kids got to walk away with their very own batik design collections.

The kids of KDE were invited to try their hand in a Batik Canting demonstration on 30th

May 2013, which aired on the popular “Selamat Pagi Malaysia” programme on RTM 1. The demonstration was part of the promotions for the kids’ school holiday event of Batik Canting, which was held on 2nd

June 2013 in KDE. A big thank you goes out to En Zakaria from PD Batik and also to En Abd Rahman Mat and his kids. We also thank Cik Siti Farah Abd Kudus and her kids for taking part in this programme.

KDE Annual Men’s Club Championship 2013 (22nd & 23rd Jun 2013)

Kim Myong Kon totalled 152 to win the title at the KDE Annual Men’s Club Championship 2013. The one-handicapper beat runner-up Kim Oh Young (handicap 4) and second runner-up Idris Ngah (handicap 4) to emerge as the champion. All winners received TaylorMade golf bags and Isetan Vouchers presented by KDE Club Manager, Tunku Masuri. Meanwhile, Hasnul Bahari walked away with the RM1,145 Bull’s Eye prize.

31st July 2013 was the last day for Tunku Masuri Jaafar with KDE and the Berjaya Group, after serving for almost 7 years in Berjaya Clubs. A splendid farewell dinner cum buka-puasa event was held for her on 29th July 2013, by the staff and management. During the dinner, Tunku Masuri took the opportunity to give a farewell speech in which she shared her parting words and also welcomed our new Club Manager, Mr Siva Kangasu. Each Head of Department stepped up during the ceremonies to present farewell gifts from their respective departments. Tunku Masuri will be greatly missed within the Clubs and Group, and we wish her well in her future undertakings.

KDE Staff Represent Malaysia in Malaysian Food Festival held in Caracas, Venezuela (19th - 22nd Jun 2013)

Swimming Competition at Bukit Banang Golf (18th Aug 2013)

The Malaysian Food Festival 2013 was held at the Eurobuilding Hotel & Suites in Caracas from 19th – 22nd June 2013. Siti Fatimah, Chef de Partie from KDE, was among the Malaysian chefs who represented Malaysia in the cooking demonstration. The food festival was sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, with many of the special ingredients brought all the way from Malaysia. The chefs also prepared and gave demonstrations of cooking Malaysian dishes such as satay, char koey teow, mee mamak, nasi lemak, nasi ayam, rendang, dhalca, roti canai, rojak, cendol, sago gula Melaka and bubur kacang. The launching of the event was made even more glamorous by the attendance of the diplomatic corps, the media, travel agencies and the business community. Kudos to Siti Fatimah, who made us proud by representing Malaysia!

More than 10 swimming teams from throughout the state of Johor, comprising over 150 participants, took part in the MSNJ/PRAJ Swimming Circuit 1st Leg at BBGCC. All swimmers except those in the SUKMA team and the National Swimming Competition were eligible for this competition. There were 4 groups: 8 years and below, 9 & 10 years, 11 & 12 years, and 13 & 14 years old. The teams arrived as early as 7.30am and the participants reported themselves with great anticipation to the organiser, Persatuan Renang Amateur Johor.

Among the most promising swimmers was 9-year-old Gloria Gracia Wong Sze. Despite a handicap on her left arm, she demonstrated great determination and the spirit to compete with all the other swimmers. She swam with only her right hand and completed the 100m freestyle at last placing.

The competition began in the cool, breezy morning; but at about 10.30 am, the sun came out. Yet despite the heat, the parents took the opportunity to picnic and camp under the canopy provided. The crowd grew larger in the late morning as the competition intensified. And then, after an hour’s break for lunch at 12.00 noon, the event completed at 4.30pm with a rousing and emotional prize-giving ceremony.

Cultural Practices

Our golf course recently began a vertical-cutting programme to reduce the thatch on our fairways. What is it and why is it necessary? Vertical cutting is a remedial mechanical process utilised to remove excess thatch, reduce the turf canopy density and extract organic from the turf at or beneath the plant crown area. What this means is that excess organic matter is removed from the turf. If this is allowed to build up, it can affect the root development of the turf as well as breed pests. When the vertical cutting process is completed, our members will be treated to a healthier, more playable course. This programme is to be completed by the end of this year.

The Bukit Banang Golf & Sembawang Country Club Friendly Golf Tournament received a rousing response that saw 80 players taking part in the friendly match. When the results were announced, BBGCC emerged as Champions with 233 points. Following the prize-giving ceremony, our guests of honour enjoyed each other’s company with a sumptuous dinner featuring a free flow of beer.

It was a joyous occasion when 30 orphan children from Sek. Keb. Beranang joined us for a buka puasa event. In addition to a scrumptious meal to break fast together, our club contributed “duit raya” of RM70 to each child plus “baju raya”, school stationery and a mini pouch to hold their personal belongings.
