Health Care Handbook for Person with Down Syndrome

Since 1993, our Association collaborated with the Princess Margaret Hospital to launch the

first Down Syndrome Special Clinic (aka Down’s Clinic below). This was an attempt to step

beyond the boundary, a model that connected medical service and social service together,

to support the families and children with Down Syndrome. Nowadays, there are four

Down’s Clinics in Hong Kong, located at the Caritas Medical Centre (Kowloon), Prince of

Wales Hospital (Shatin), Alice Ho Nethersole Hospital (Tai Po) and Tuen Mun Hospital (Tuen

Mun), providing one-stop medical and social services support for people with Down

Syndrome from new born to aged 18. However, please note that these hospitals only

accept patients under their geographical clusters, or cases referred by doctors. Thus,

self-application is not applicable.

Providing a systematic health recording for the children, a “Healthcare Handbook for

Persons with Down Syndrome” is jointly produced by our Association and Caritas Medical

Centre. Hence, the health conditions of people with Down Syndrome can be consistently

recorded after every clinical visit. Those record does help provide holistic information to

doctors for better following up, and also raise the awareness of parents on the health

issues of their children with Down Syndrome. We highly recommend you to keep this

Healthcare Handbook for better communication with the doctors, kindly contact us for

more information.

In order to review the effectiveness on the usage of the Healthcare Handbook, a “Parents

Group of Policy Address” will collect data from parents and understand their experience of

using the handbook by phone calls in November. The data will be analyzed by our

Association and Caritas Medical Centre for understanding the collective needs of persons

with Down Syndrome.

Promoting the ‘DS Members Artistic Talent Program’

Children with Down Syndrome have a gifted talent of art – painting, dancing, and

handicrafts, etc. In view of this, our Association is contacting companies to do media

promotion and fusion with those art for electronic greeting cards to show the artistic

talents of our children to the world. Our Association will collect and use the art work in

batches coincided with specific holidays such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas and

New Year. Please do not hesitate to send your children’s art works to our Shatin Head

Office, highlighting “Artistic Talent Program”, for our selection.

The 8th 4-City Conference on Services for People with Intellectual Disability

‘Focus – the Macau Exchange’

The 8th 4-City Conference was held in May 2016, and the theme of this year was

‘Togetherness, Focus, Progress, Creativity, and Value’. Our 10 parents participated in this

great event and they gained the opportunity to exchange their own ideas and experiences

with parents from Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland and Taiwan. The experts, scholars and

social workers shared their discoveries, experiences, lessons and studies in the

rehabilitative services. Their sharing helped parents obtain the latest news of rehabilitative

services. Indeed, our parents gained a lot of supports and encouragements!

Lastly, we had also visited the Macau Down Syndrome Association for exchanges, and that

brought the entire trip to a wonderful end because we believed that every parent can gain

mutual supports regardless of geography and distance. The 9th Conference will be held in

Taiwan in May 2018, and we are looking forward to more inspiring and new developments

in the rehabilitation services – parents should not miss this opportunity!
