As I close out my final months as Chairman, I am continually impressed at the progress made by the Area Development Partnership and Greater Hattiesburg. My great grandparents settled in this area soon after Hattiesburg was founded because of the vision of the original founders. Our community has a storied history of community leaders who have paved the way for us and their past investments and hard work coupled with a vibrant business sector and eager labor force, has resulted in this vision becoming reality. The Cities of Hattiesburg and Petal, along with Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties, continue to have that vision for growth. Companies like Mar Jac Poultry and KOHLER Engines are expanding, new restaurants and retail businesses are increasingly calling Greater Hattiesburg home and a revitalized Midtown Hattiesburg is becoming a reality. I am grateful to have had a front row seat to witness this progress throughout the past year as ADP Chair and I am confident that the ADP will continue to build and strengthen this community for many years to come.

FIRED UPA Q&A with Annual Meeting Speaker John O’Leary

Throughout the year, the ADP has provided top notch programs for members with dynamic speakers and valuable instruction. This all culminates with the 2016 Annual Meeting, featuring New York Times best-selling author, John O’Leary.

After overcoming a childhood accident which left him with burns over 100% of his body, John now spends his life inspiring others to beat the odds and overcome their own trials and challenges. His book, On Fire, highlights “7 choices to ignite a radically inspired life.” The ADP is thrilled to welcome John to Hattiesburg on December 2nd for what is sure to be an inspiring program.

To preface his remarks in December, we asked John a few questions about himself.

ADP: AFTER DEALING WITH IMMENSE TRAGEDY AND SET-BACKS IN YOUR OWN LIFE, WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO INSPIRE OTHERS?John O’Leary: Almost 20 years after I was burned and their house was destroyed, my parents wrote a book about their experiences. Their book inspired me to finally realize that not only was I extremely fortunate to survive and thrive after being burned,

but I could not have done any of it without the outpouring of love and support. Today, I have the honor of being a speaker, writer and radio host encouraging others to wake up from accidental living and lead inspired lives.

YOU HAVE PERSEVERED AND OVERCOME INCREDIBLE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMA. WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR REMAINING POSITIVE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY?We all face adversity, trauma and pain on a daily basis; it’s just the degree that varies. What keeps me motivated during difficult times and humble during great times is the simple reminder that this too shall pass.

ARE THERE ANY ROUTINES OR ACTIVITIES YOU DO DAILY TO STAY ENERGIZED AND INSPIRED?I have a ritual of waking up early, making coffee, going outside and watching the sunrise. The miracle of the darkness fading into light ignites my heart every time I see it. While sipping on coffee and being bathed in sunlight, I’ll calm myself by reading a little scripture. Finally, I’ll journal for 60 seconds on the question: “Today I am grateful for: _____.” For me, it’s an awesome way to kick start my day with the right mind-set.

YOU SPEAK OFTEN ABOUT RENEWAL AND REIGNITING SPARKS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR A BUSINESS OWNER WHO IS LOOKING TO REIGNITE A SPARK IN HIS OR HER BUSINESS?Frequently we get so focused on WHAT we do that we forget the very reason WHY we do it in the first place. For me, I have extraordinary amounts of meetings, calls, emails, travel, nights away, speeches, writing deadlines and shows to produce. I have a team to lead, a community to serve and a growing family to support. This is the stuff that I have to do and it’s a lot to balance.

PAGE 6

BUT WHY DO IT?I have a very strong personal drive to wake up individuals and organizations to live inspired. It’s why I get up early and stay up late. It’s why I work like a dog when I am at the office, but also play like a puppy when I am home. The clarity around mission ignites our entire team to not only know the reason we’re in business, but the profound impact of their efforts.

So if business owners are missing that passion for what they do, I encourage them to ask themselves why they do what they do, why they strive to make a difference and why they choose, organizationally, to thrive? In answering those three questions, they’ll not only reignite the spark within their business, but most certainly breathe life into the bottom line, too.

BIO SOIL ENHANCERS, INC.Success Takes Root in Hattiesburg Facility

A homegrown Hattiesburg-based manufacturer is planting deep roots for success in the agricultural industry. Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc., the sole manufacturer of a product called SumaGrow, is taking strides in worldwide innovation with its revolutionary product. Poised to become the most widely used and recognized agricultural biological in the world, Bio Soil Enhancers is leaning into a fertile future with Mississippi roots.

Headquartered on James Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Bio Soil operates in a 27,000 square foot facility with 24 employees. From its humble beginnings of three staff members, the company has grown into a network of domestic and international licensees, investors and customers all over the world. With an increase of 187% in exports last year to over 50 countries worldwide, it’s safe to say that Bio Soil expects sustained growth in export activity looking ahead.

Bio Soil’s award-winning, innovative product SumaGrow is a fertilizer alternative that yields high quality crops with less irrigation and reduced inputs at competitive, stable pricing. With its blend of soil-borne microorganisms selected for their abilities to achieve higher yielding, higher quality plants and grasses by restoring and maintaining soil health and fertility, SumaGrow is an all natural, organically based solution to over-fertilization.

Racking up awards and accolades galore, Bio Soil has set a high standard for making an impact with their product quality. The company was awarded the 2014 and 2016 Mississippi Governor’s Award for Excellence in Exporting based on their drastic increase in international sales. Their state-of-the-art

product also earned a Google “Moonshot” Award in 2015, as the company was recognized as one of four finalists selected by the Google Developer Group. In addition, Bio Soil was ranked 2nd and 4th consecutively on the 2013 and 2014 Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S. companies in manufacturing. Most recently the company was chosen by a star-studded panel of judges for the top award at “Pitch Tank” in Las Vegas, a competition of over 800 applicants from across the world. With a plethora of awards on global playing fields, Bio Soil Enhancers continues to break ground on continued evidence and exposure for their industry-changing product.

“I think we’re a part of a bigger picture,” says Aimee Murry, Public Relations and Marketing Communications Manager for Bio Soil Enhancers, in talking about the company’s vision. With close community synergies to the Hattiesburg area and The University of Southern Mississippi, Bio Soil is reaping a plentiful harvest of partnership and success. With some of the best and brightest researchers at Southern Miss, Bio Soil is capitalizing on opportunities to take their research and development efforts to the next level. Driven by the greater good of protecting our natural resources, Bio Soil is set on efficiency and sustainability of their product and process.

“Are we the total solution? No, but we’re part of it. We’re in this big picture. It’s about more than us…The definition of sustainability begins with recognizing that our resources are limited and acknowledging that they are for every generation,” said Murry. Bio Soil President Wayne Wade reiterated the company’s forward-thinking vision in looking ahead to the future of both Bio Soil, the Hattiesburg community and the agricultural industry at large. “We want to leave a legacy of good stewardship,” said Wade.

With over 10 awards and recognitions over the past seven years for their industry-changing product, it’s safe to say that Bio Soil Enhancers and SumaGrow are indeed leaving a legacy of innovation, collaboration and stewardship.

LEADERSHIP PINEBELTGenerating Awareness and Enriching the Quality of Life

The ADP’s Leadership Pinebelt class of 2016 is busy creating opportunities that’ll not only enhance the quality of life in Greater Hattiesburg, but bring your attention to causes that touch the heart. Each year, projects are developed with the sole purpose of enriching the region’s quality of life. Some of these projects are completed in one year while others are on-going. No matter the status, these community-based projects are developed to make the place we call home a great place to work, play and stay. The 2016 projects cover various ends of the spectrum. From providing services to special needs families, to raising dollars for an after school arts program, and illuminating the area’s longest trail, there’s a little something for everyone at the heart of each project.

An initiative of the Hattiesburg Arts Council, smART SPACE is a free after school arts program for all kids in the Hattiesburg area. Members of the Leadership Pinebelt class helped develop a supply and material contract between smART SPACE and area businesses for materials, developed marketing materials and hosted a fundraiser that will continue on an annual basis as a way to generate revenue for the program. Havana Nights Art Gala was held on August 29th at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center, and raised over $4,600 in ticket sales and silent auction items.

Person First Special Needs Expo connected over 100 families and individuals with special needs and their caregivers in the Pine Belt to a plethora of exhibitors from local and state organizations whose efforts assist individuals in achieving their maximum potential and attaining a rich quality of life. The 6-person small group is incredibly passionate about this project and believes every individual has a right to experience fullness of life and to be treated with respect, consideration and dignity. Person First Special Needs Expo was held on August 17th at Pearl River Community College.

Lighting Longleaf is a capital campaign to fund the purchase and installation of lights on the new extension of the Longleaf Trace from The University of Southern Mississippi Gateway to Downtown Hattiesburg. A goal of $50,000 has been set, and can be achieved through sponsorships, private donations and the 5K Glow Run and 1 Mile Walk that was held on September 15th. Upon selecting the project, the group stated that they recognized a need for improved safety along the Longleaf Trace, and saw this project as an opportunity for increased access to commerce and recreational use.

As a young professional, it can be difficult to walk into a room of more seasoned colleagues and start up conversation. Mingling at a Business After Hours or First Friday breakfasts with CEOs and top business leaders is an intimidating feat for those just starting their careers.

Thankfully, the Area Development Partnership offers a program for Young Professionals to hone their networking skills in a low-stress, casual environment. Pine Belt Young Professionals (PBYP) is committed to providing young professionals with opportunities to connect to each other and the community through service, networking and professional development.

PBYP meets monthly for either a Blue Plate Lunch (professional development) or Off the Clock (networking) event designed to help them connect. Events take place at various restaurants and venues throughout Greater Hattiesburg.

Not only does PBYP give young professionals a place to connect, it also provides leadership opportunities for those looking to progress personally and professionally. All events are planned and coordinated by the PBYP Committee, a group of volunteers dedicated to providing opportunities for YPs to connect, grow and serve. Committee members are selected based on leadership potential, community involvement and diversity. These leaders set the tone for the rest of the 100+ member organization.
