Background

Page 8: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

History of Food Heroes• This Food Heroes program is unique around the world in that it is the first

comprehensive yearlong curriculum to be based on new guidelines on what is a healthy and sustainable diet. These guidelines were developed in conjunction with leading experts from Harvard Public School of Health, The Lancet, World Food Programme, USC Cancer Institute, EAT Forum, Stockholm Resilience Institute, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and many more. Collectively, the global research expert network behind Food Heroes is incomparable.

• Before the start of Food Heroes in 2013, dialogue on health was very siloed. Doctors didn't talk to nutritionists who didn't work with climate change experts or farmers who didn't collaborate with chefs. Food Heroes' curriculum changed that.

• Food Heroes staff was involved in the breakthrough Rockefeller Lancet commission "Planetary Health" in 2015. Food Heroes staff is on the advisory board of the leading food systems transformation platform, the EAT Forum. Food Heroes staff is working along side the EAT Lancet commission on defining a healthy and sustainable diet, to be launched in April 2018.

The Program

Food Heroes is the first comprehensive behavior change system to fully integrate personal and planetary health into a new dietary

guideline, classroom curriculum, and home activities.

Games and kidspeak make knowledge actionable down to the level of every bite. Kids can bond over lovable characters. It is packaged to be easy to implement by teachers in extracurricular classes. Classroom curriculum is paired with home activities to change behavior of both

children and their parents.

Page 11: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

Program End GoalsThe vision is to have food curriculum adopted into mandatory school education - either core or at least extracurricular, from preschool to 3rd

grade.

A teacher certification program will enable nutritionists and teachers to teach good nutrition and sustainable food systems. Beyond the

classroom, the program’s narrative and characters will engage kids at home through media, books, toys, etc.

A sustainable revenue model from home product sales, namely through our subscription box “dining room adventure land” concept, and mobile in-app purchases will enable distribution of free classroom curriculum

throughout China and eventually globally.

Challenge I:

4 Hour Teacher Training Workshop

Page 15: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

Teacher Training BriefFood Heroes already has a great 7 week program for the

Kindergarteners, but in order to scale, we need to train the teachers to run the 7 week program enthusiastically in their schools.

We hope to have a combination of online and offline training for teachers around China to learn about Food Heroes and how they

can use it in their classrooms. This will start off with a 4 Hour Training Workshop for the teachers as the main experience but

ideally extend to motivation support during the 7 week program.

It's very important that after training completion, the teachers are motivated and committed to implementing the program in their

classroom. We want the teachers to deliver the whole Food Heroes program from start to finish.

Page 16: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

Teacher Training: Opening Questions

•How to get teachers excited about teaching Food Heroes. Make discovery phase more exciting.

•How to gamify the 4 hour workshop?

•What is the experience after the 4 hour workshop, while they are teaching over the year?

•How do we deliver the package of curriculum materials to the teachers? How do we best present the materials to teachers? Both training materials and students' in-classroom use materials.

•How to get teachers excited about taking the workshop, so they encourage other teachers do it?

•How can we turn teachers into advocates? How do teachers advocate to other teachers in other schools to use Food Heroes throughout the 7 week program, in a casual conversation? "Hey look at this video.”

Challenge II:

12 Month eCommerce Subscription Box

Page 26: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

12-Month Subscription BoxFood Heroes already has a great 7 week program for the Kindergarteners. But once the 7 week program ends, we want to make sure they continue to be excited about Food Heroes and live healthily throughout.

This also serves as an ongoing monetization strategy to keep the organization sustainable.

The Food Heroes Adventure Box is designed to engage the Kindergartners and involve the family. It will be a 12-month Subscription Model ordered online by the parents. These boxes can be used in any family scenario, independent of classroom use. In many cases, grandparents or parents might want to gift this item for birthdays.

Review the 7 Week Food Hero Program

You will see placeholder designs of the current planned collaterals, assets, printouts, card games for

the Food Hero 7 Week Program. The Subscription Model should be in a similar theme and enrich the gameplay especially if the kids have been through

the 7 Week Program.

Page 28: Octalysis Gamification Design Challenge - Food Heroes

The ChallengeDesign a 12 month program where the subscription box will be delivered to the households once or twice a month.

Creative

Some questions to answer: What do you get in each box? How to include elements that are fun for the whole family, and not just for the kid? What are the components, and how can these be developed in a cost-effective manner? Could the games double as dining area decor? Are flashcard products an option? Could you create a storybook and the characters within that narrative? Could you create puzzles to solve over time? What about bonus games that are downloadable online? What about birthday party gift boxes?

Marketing / Distribution

How will people discover it? Gamified marketing plan for selling subscription box. Potential website design for ordering. Upselling to other products online. Can we create a peer to peer design, where the box is more effective when bought together and played together with friends?
