CARLETTE S the THE STUDENT NEWSPAPER OF WEST LAFAYETTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL OCTOBER 8TH, 2010 VOLUME 68, ISSUE 2 NEWS 1 OPINIONS 3 FEATURES 5 A&E 9 SPORTS 10 STUDENT LIFE 12 Check Out What’s Inside: The referendum was passed last May to cheers by teachers, stu- dents, parents, and volunteers across the corporation who had eagerly awaited its success. The source of in- coming money from the referendum will be provided beginning January, when the tax raise of up to 43 cents per $100 assessed property, will be implemented. (Currently, 35-37 cents per $100 assessed property is the es- timated amount of the property tax raise, but could change depending on assessments of money being col- lected from the tax.) WLCSC busi- ness manager Ross Sloat stated early last month in the Journal and Courier that he expects a maximum amount of $3.2 million needed to be raised by the referendum over its seven-year implementation. Recently, the referendum yielded a few negative changes inevi- table to the nature of the money being directly paid for out of the pockets of property owners. At the beginning of school in August, some parents were required to pay hundreds more for their children’s school fees. Accord- ing to Superintendent Rocky Killion, the fee increase had been due to a cut in funding from the state along with the referendum. The only people af- fected were out-of-district parents who paid an average of $538 a year more than they did the previous year; and parents of children in all- day kindergarten, who paid an extra $600 Mr. Pugh, co-president of the West Lafayette Education Association, says that the hope of future money from the referendum is ensuring that the corporation can “spend all its funds” this school year. The referendum BY WANYOUNG KIM [email protected] SOME ELBOW ROOM, PLEASE? : It is hoped that small class sizes, such as the one in Biology AP, can be preserved. Photo by Wanyoung Kim Anime, Eco, Chinese, Theatre Arts, Science... these are a few of the many diverse clubs to which West La- fayette High School is a proud home. Hoping to add to this list are juniors Roberta Weiner and Dominik Mockus, formerly referred to as “Logistics Coor- dinator and Supervisor”. “I’ve always been interested in ballroom dance,” Roberta explains, “but I never actually saw people doing it. I thought it would be a cool idea.” Dominik states simply, “Kids at West Side need to have a ball- room dancing experience.” The club is still in its unborn stages while Roberta searches for a sponsor among the West Side staff. “It’s hard to find a sponsor, because it is a big commitment,” she says. Unknown to many students, the forming of a club is a rather grueling process. A significant amount of thought, money, planning and paperwork go into the creation of a new club. Roberta adds, “We even have to explain how it relates to the curriculum. It’s a lot more to do with bureaucracy than I thought.” Once the club gets off its feet, Ro- berta and Dominik plan on bringing in outside instructors from the Camelot Dance Club. Potentially, they may hold an extra, non-school-associated dance. Dominik hints at a Halloween-based masquerade ball. “I just want people to have fun,” Roberta shrugs. The Facebook group page for West Side Ballroom Dance Club, one of the ini- tiatives taken to advertise the progress of the club, reads “Dances we might dance are Waltz, Rumba, Foxtrot, Cha-cha, Tango, East Coast Swing, Hustle, Polka, Samba.” The club has high ambitions, but a lot of effort is be- ing put into ensuring its success. BY HARINI SURESH [email protected] Meet the fabulous Miriam Rollock, page 12. Popular shows return to the talking box with the start of new seasons, pages 6-7 Move over Brangelina, here come the internet celebrities, page 5 saved the positions of several faculty members across the corporation who might have otherwise been laid off. At the high school, this and the hir- ing of four new teachers has enabled smaller class sizes which can hope- fully continue with the help of the referendum money. The details about future uses of the ref- erendum are sketchy; espe- cially with the 2011 budget, currently adver- tised as $24.9 million, not be- ing finalized until October. According to the rough plans outlined at the Sep- tember 15 School Board Meeting, some of the money will most likely go towards helping preserve and main- tain the existing, wide range of art, music, physical education and sports programs previously imperiled by the possibility of the referendum failing to be passed.
