They even isolate you in a place called the “POSO” [the pit] which is a 2x2 meter room where you are alone and naked. In this prison there are people with mental illnesses, psychological and nervous problems, as well as epilepsy. This is the case with one immigrant named Y O with A number: who is a Citizen of . This person has been detained for 6 months without obtaining any kind of treatment for his condition. He constantly has nervous and epileptic attacks and it doesn’t matter to the officers of this detention center that his mental, emotional and physical health condition is very bad. He is 30 years old, but because of his illness he acts as if he were a nine year old boy. This is an injustice that is being done to this person, not making a record to even have a credible fear interview with ICE. His situation is so bad that he himself doesn’t have the capacity to request a deportation if that were the case. He tells us that he feels very sad and that he no longer wants to be locked up. What is happening to this person is a great injustice by the authorities of this detention center, ICE, and all those who deny the opportunity for parole to this person or to anyone else for humanitarian reasons. We believe that he deserves it; his family no longer knows what to do in order to reunite with him in this country.

FORMAL COMPLAINT

A cordial greeting from us.

By means of this letter, we wish to make a formal complaint, in the name of those

detainees at STEWART DETENTION CENTER, of abuses, atrocities, violations of Human

Rights, racism, and hate against all the immigrants in this detention center.

First of all, we denounce the unjust, unprofessional and unethical decisions by Judge Dan

Trimble. This judge makes decisions which are more personal than professional, since even

when the requirements to apply for parole or bond are met, he denies any possibility of such

benefit, denying political asylum among other requests, even with credible fear. He holds the

record for the most detainees held in this prison because of his acts of racism and hatred against

immigrants.

As a result of these decisions, a series of suicide attempts, hunger strikes, protests, and other

events have been unleashed. It should be noted that three weeks ago, 72 detainees held a protest

in the prison yard. But in less than 24 hours, special forces handcuffed them all and caused them

to disappear from the detention center. They cut off phone communications to keep us from

reporting anything about these events to our families, they restrict visits, and nothing at all comes

to light.

Likewise, in this prison when you say that you are sick or that you have problems with

depression, hopelessness, or anxiety, normal symptoms for being deprived of liberty, they

prescribe and make you take pills that keep you sedated. They even isolate you in a place called

the “POSO” [the pit] which is a 2x2 meter room where you are alone and naked.

In this prison there are people with mental illnesses, psychological and nervous problems, as well

as epilepsy. This is the case with one immigrant named Y O with A number:

who is a Citizen of . This person has been detained for 6 months without obtaining

any kind of treatment for his condition. He constantly has nervous and epileptic attacks and it

doesn’t matter to the officers of this detention center that his mental, emotional and physical

health condition is very bad. He is 30 years old, but because of his illness he acts as if he were a

nine year old boy. This is an injustice that is being done to this person, not making a record to

even have a credible fear interview with ICE. His situation is so bad that he himself doesn’t have

the capacity to request a deportation if that were the case. He tells us that he feels very sad and

that he no longer wants to be locked up. What is happening to this person is a great injustice by

the authorities of this detention center, ICE, and all those who deny the opportunity for parole to

this person or to anyone else for humanitarian reasons. We believe that he deserves it; his family

no longer knows what to do in order to reunite with him in this country.

Similarly, we denounce the ICE officers for their poor job performance. We never have

information from them about our cases or whatever other information we need. We ask the

detention officers and they say they don’t know, and that we should talk with the ICE officer.

And with that person the same thing happens, they say that they don’t know anything about it.

We are never able to talk personally with them. There are detainees who have been in this

detention center for 11 months without having committed any crime except having crossed the

river illegally in search of asylum, to have so much time without an answer just because of the

negligence of ICE.

We haven’t seen the sunlight for a week; they have taken away our right to recreation within this

prison. We are desperate. Many of us came in search of freedom, fleeing persecution and torture

by dictators in countries like VENEZUELA, NICARAGUA and CUBA. And we find all these

abuses that cause us to suffer even more. Many would rather be deported and die in their own

countries than die slowly with the mental torture that we live with here.

We want to be heard and we want your intervention in all the aforementioned. We are drowning.

We need help immediately, and we request that you take action on this matter. For these reasons

we dare to make this complaint and we hope that you will respect us and respect our Human

Rights.

With no more to add, we appreciate your attention and await your prompt response.

Very truly yours, from all the detainees at this detention center.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

GOD BLESS THE IMMIGRANTS!!

!! MUCHAS GRACIAS ii

!! DIOS BENDIGA LOS ENMIGRANTES ii
