A Proud Past Fifty years of Head Start. Fifty years of growing and new ideas and better services to children. Fifty years of

improvements and higher standards and fifty years of dedicated service to our nation’s most vulnerable families. Fifty years of good work.

Head Start is seen as the indelible and sturdy multi-color threads that are woven into the fabric of our nation’s earliest education system and they make up the brightest part of the cloth!

Over 30 million children birth to five have gone through Head Start in the past fifty years and our nation has invested over $153 billion dollars in the program during that time frame. By contrast – the cost of the Iraq war has been estimated at $2 trillion – and a trillion is a thousand billion. If we invested just one-third of what we

spent in that war on the young children of this nation there is no limit to what we could do for those children and the future of this nation!

A Promising Future We must continue to ensure that our nation invests in these children and we must continue to ensure that Head

Start meets the challenges of being the gold standard for early childhood education in our nation. We must set the bar high and continue to attain the level of services that make

Head Start such a distinctive and noteworthy program. To do this we must continue our culture of learning. The culture of learning that we have developed over recent years must continue to grow in sophistication and quality so that we are always ready to meet the

challenges that will continue to confront us and the growth and changes our work brings us. Head Start leaders and staff must recognize that our future holds both promise and challenge, and that in order

to be ready to meet that promise, we must be prepared, informed and professionally dedicated to take on the accompanying challenges.

Our families depend on us to show them the way; our children rely on us to set them on the right and best course so that their future is assured.

This conference has been planned to address the promise and the challenges.

It will help build leadership skills at every level of the Head Start organization.

This event will provide intensive, practical and advanced level learning to enhance the professional development levels of Head Start Parents, Staff and Administrators.

The 2015 Region V Leadership and Professional Development Conference comes at a time when the need for outstanding leadership in Head Start and early childhood education is at an all time high, and when the need for high levels of professionalism and professional development in Head Start is anchored in national, regional and state initiatives and priorities.

The future of Head Start is in our hands and how we approach ensuring its success is a critical part of the leadership challenges we face.

This Conference will focus on these leadership challenges. We have partnered with both the Office of Head Start and the Regional Office to identify pressing issues related to program design and management; fiscal operations; component area

service delivery and parent involvement.

The Region V Conference will provide the unique opportunity for participants to engage with OHS and Regional Office staff to address

national, regional and state specific issues.
