WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4 Congratulations to all TIGER supporters – that should keep you quiet for the next 29 years! I know I’ll regret that statement. I trust everyone had the opportunity for some quality family time over the holidays. I would like to welcome back our staff, students and com-munity members and wish all a fantastic Term 4. MAJOR WORKS UPDATE We are finally underway with fences installed around an extensive area including the site of our new gymnasium. Site sheds came next followed by the removal of some tress, which was complet-ed on Monday. We intend to replant following the completion of works. Excavation of the gym site commences today and will take several days to complete. Demolition work of half the old ad-ministration building will commence in early November. STAFFING NEWS On behalf of the school community we wish Kirsty Walsh and Callum a wonderful wedding next weekend and a great life ahead. Congratulations also to Marie-Claire Poulsen who announced this week, she is expecting a baby in late March 2018. We could not be happier for both of these lovely staff members. Colin Hartley sent this picture – as you can see he has made a new friend in the USA! DEPARTURES To assist our 2018 planning we would like to hear from families who are moving and their children not returning to The Basin PS. Please let us know as soon as possible. STUDENT PLACEMENT REQUESTS Determining class placements is a complex task where staff members undertake a considerable lengthy process to ensure the best possible placement is made to meet each student's educational needs. Factors that we take into consideration when making class placements include: academic achievement, personal / interpersonal development, friendship groups, learning styles, gender balance and other individual learning needs. It is important to understand that with so many factors to con-sider it is not possible to accommodate every request. Teachers discuss, reflect and review their decisions over several weeks. However, please be aware that each and every factor in the decision as to where a child is placed for next year is given our utmost attention. If you have any information based upon ‘education grounds’ that should be considered in relation to the placement of your child it needs to be sent to me in writing by no later than FRIDAY 10TH NO-VEMBER. As situations change, previous requests should be resubmitted if the reason still exists. After this date, new information will not be considered. Parents will be notified of placements in the last week of term. SUN SMART – APPROVED SCHOOL HATS MUST BE WORN BY ALL STUDENTS! As the weather gets warmer the sun’s damaging UV rays become more intense and dangerous. Be-cause we are a Sun Smart school all students are expected to wear a school approved hat, during all outside activities including recess and lunch breaks from October to April. Those students without a hat or without the correct hat will have to play in the undercover area at recess and lunchtime. 2018 CLASS STRUCTURE PLANNING Planning is now well underway for the 2018 school year including preliminary staffing arrangements and grade structure. Next year there will be an additional two classes – at the Grade 1 and Grade 2 level to cater for the big cohorts moving through the school. Class sizes in Prep to Grade 4 will re-main small from 18 to 23, which is a key reason for two additional grades.

PREP TRANSITION Next Tuesday 17th October, we begin the Transition process for our incoming 2018 Preps. The tran-sition program forms an important part in preparing the students to begin with us next year by ad-dressing anxieties and demystifying what a day at school is like. Three transitions sessions are scheduled in term four, with students spending a couple of hours with us each time. The program will culminate on December 12th where students will spend time with their 2018 classroom teacher and new classmates. Enrolled families have already been sent information directly about the transition sessions for this very important pathway in to school. PARKING I hope that with the warmer weather approaching, more families will be able to walk to and from school giving the car-parking situation a much-needed break. I would also request parents to continue to be patient and park appropriately. Could I ask that parents not reverse backwards into the angled spaces along the internal driveway? Thankyou for your continued understanding. BUSHFIRE SEASON - CODE RED DAYS We are getting closer to the Bushfire season and the safety of all our school community is para-mount. Please note that nothing has changed for Code Red days. The school will be closed, with prior notification, and parents are expected to make safe alternate arrangements for their children. It is important for all families to be prepared and enact their individual Bushfire action plan when they feel appropriate. INTERESTING FACT A friend contacted me yesterday informing me that on reading Bob Irwin’s autobiography - “The Last Crocodile Hunter” over the holidays that Bob Irwin grew up in this area and attended The Basin Pri-mary School. Bob Irwin is of course the father of the late Steve Irwin LAST DAY OF TERM 4 2017 An early reminder to parents is that the last school day for students, this year is Friday 22nd De-cember and the dismissal time will be 1:30pm following a final assembly of the year which will com-mence at 12:50pm. WALK TO SCHOOL OCTOBER

2017

Our students and families have the oppor-tunity to be a part of Walk to School Oc-tober 2017. Students who ride, scoot or skate to school are acknowledged for their active travel by being allowed to mark each trip on the grade charts. At the conclusion of October students will be awarded a certificate for their involve-ment in the program. We recommend that students walk with parents where possible. Where it is impractical for students to walk to school, alternatively they can walk 3 laps of the oval on arrival at school to register a “walk” for that morning.
