Hello,
Wow, members, friends and family, it's October,
and the year is nearly ending and yet beginning
for many. The club is looking for members with
inspiration, motivation, and positive ambition
for fun and excitement! Please come forward or
help bring someone to the board of Officers or
the nominating committee to be an officer for
2018. We have all positions open, and we are
looking for volunteers to make the future of the
club be the best for the adults as well as the juniors.
The next big agenda item for this month is the live auction put in
place of the normal monthly meeting! This club received large dona-
tions of equipment and material for us to offer to the club, and to
give our members a special chance to purchase these donations for
their family to enjoy (see page 7 in this newsletter for a few pictures
to preview). These earnings will only go to the KMGS Scholarship
fund.
The month of October is our last chance to really prepare for the up-
coming Fall Festival of Gems, so keep working on those display cas-
es, as well as all the other preparations to make our fall show go off
without a hitch.
Thanks for supporting me supporting you. Keep up the great work.
-Tony Schackmann

Board Meetings
Board Meetings are held on the Wednesdays following the monthly meetings. This month the board
meeting will be Wednesday, October 18th, starting at 7pm at the Chico Alliance Church in the side room
in the basement. We discuss business with the chair persons and officers, but all members are welcome.
Year’s Schedule:
G thru H – Jan
I thru L - Feb
M – March
N thru R – April
S – May
T thru Z = June
A thru B – Sept
C thru D – Oct
E thru F – Nov
October Refreshment schedule:
For the month of October, if your
last name starts with “C” thru “D”
it is your turn to bring refresh-
ments! Finger foods are always
best as they can easily be placed
on a napkin. Please stay and help
out Karen in the kitchen with set-
up and clean-up.
Upcoming Field Trips:
November/December: There will be no field trips for the months of November and December due to the November
show and December potluck, as well as cold weather coming in. There are always museums to visit and local rock shows however, so save your energy
for digging in the springtime, and don’t miss our November Fall Festival of Gems.
Danielle and Eric Foss
I also want to let everyone know that due to continuing commitments and a busy family life, Eric and I will not be coordinating field trips next year. If coordinating trips is something you are inter-
ested in, please let us know. You do not have to lead every trip, you just need to help organize
them. Also, field trip leaders are always needed. If you know of a great spot where you could take the club, please let us know! Leading a trip does not require any special skills except that you know
the dig site well enough to show people what they are looking for and where to go, and you can commit to a specific day and time that can be advertised to the club! Please consider helping out the
club in this way.
Just a reminder, you must be a club member to attend official club field trips!
October program
The program for October will be a live auction! Due to a large donation made of vari-ous equipment and rocks, we will be selling these items off
to benefit the club. The proceeds will go to-wards benefitting the scholarship program. Thanks to Tony, our president, and Evah Summers for receiving and storing the items for a bit so that we could set up this auction.
Display table
There will be no display table due to the live auction.
Raffle and Silent Auction:
There will be no raffle and no silent auction this month due to the live auction scheduled.

Ruth and Marvin Butler, longtime members of KMGS, are saying hello to everyone from Kennewick, WA!
Workshops:
For the next several months, Vangie Mayton will not be hosting the wire wrapping group. However, ViQ’Tree, our Vice Presi-dent is working on securing a couple of time slots at Michael’s crafts to be able to hold a few wire wrapping and beading ac-
tivity days in their room in the back. More details to come!
From Viq’Tree: It was so nice to see such a good attendance at the September meeting. I want to express
thanks to Doug Merson for the wonderful program he presented at the September meeting. For October, I won't
have a program scheduled. Instead we will be having an auction to sell off estate items of lapidary equipment
and miscellaneous that was recently donated to the club by a dentist. The funds that are raised will be added to
the scholarship fund. (Below, Pat Fagan and his award winning painting! Also one of Doug’s great photos!)
$$$ REMINDER!! $$$
Membership dues should be paid up by January 1st! The November meeting is a good time to pay ear-ly, or even at the December potluck you can find Karen Demerick, or our treasurer, Carolyn Richter.
There will be a meeting in January on the second Friday, as usual, so don’t forget those checks or cash!
More News from the Fair: The Hard Rock Beaders, An-
nieLaurie Burke had four demonstrations at the fair this year. I
was also helping with two demonstrations in which I demonstrat-
ed beading around the cabochons. We ended up doing an extra 2
hour demonstration because of a cancellation from another de-
monstrator. This is a fun way to show off your creative skills and
promote the club activities. They give you free fair tickets and a
parking pass. The demonstrations are for 2 hours. The coordinator
will send me information for next year, and I hope we might get a
variety of talented members to take time to show off their talents
at the state fair next year. It gives you a chance to meet the other
lapidary club members that have their displays in the Hobby Hall.
I shared the information about our auction in October, and they
have flyers to share in regards to our Fall Festival Event in No-
vember. It is time for election of the officers and other positions.
Being an active volunteer in the club is a great way to get to know
the members and develop lapidary knowledge. -ViQ’Tree Keefer

CRITTERS AND PAINTED ROCKS!!
I would like to thank the Reimers for their wonderful hospitality at the critter making rock
painting event at their home. We focused on painting rocks. A special thanks goes to
Lorene Leider for painting up sample rocks and showing how to paint mandalas. Bobby
and Del Sacks brought a bunch of fresh produce from their garden along with a bunch of
beautiful Dahlias to share. We had a good turn out, with good food and great fun in won-
derful surroundings. I highly recommend participating in the next critter making/rock
painting events that the Reimers host. It is a great way to get acquainted with the mem-
bers while having a fun creative social time. -ViQ’Tree Keefer
***The last Critter making party has been cancelled! We were so productive at
the first two, that we met our goal!***

Hey All,
Club elections are coming up in November, and people often shy away from serving in officers posi-
tions. It may be that they think it’s too much of a time commitment, or perhaps you don’t enjoy
getting up in front of people and speaking, but there are lots of ways you can help the club and do a
minimal amount of public speaking! All officer positions are open each year for elections, so if
there’s something you think you could do, please throw your name in the hat. This gives everyone
that has served in those positions for a year - or maybe a lot longer - a break!! This is also your
chance to shape the club and put your desires into action!
I’ve found it pretty handy on job applications, and my time as an officer putting in volunteer hours
has gotten me better jobs through the years, as well as allowed me to meet some wonderful people
along the way and form some long-lasting friendships. The great thing about a club like ours is
that we all have a lot in common! And even when you don’t feel comfortable speaking up there in
front of the club, most of us don’t either, and no one is going to judge you. In fact, we are all just go-
ing to listen and enjoy the interesting things you have to say! Show and Tell is one of my most fa-
vorite parts of the meeting because I get to hear from YOU! You have all found beautiful rocks and
fossils, and had great adventures along the way, and each and every member enjoys your story.
Keep that in mind when you consider volunteering for a position! YOU have great things to offer!
Below I have listed out a brief synopsis of what each position does in our club. Think about it, and
let us know what you can help with! -Editor
President: Keep the meeting running smoothly! You will lead board meetings as
well, and basically be the encouraging and leading voice for the club. You will write
a short blurb for the newsletter each month, and this can just be your thoughts
about the club and things to communicate to us. Sometimes people will call you
and ask about the club, or want to know how they can get involved. You will have
fun and get to know so many club members. This position is a great way to get that
CEO experience you have always wanted!
Vice President: You fill in for the president at meetings they cannot attend. Your
main job is to coordinate the programs each month! We don’t even have programs
12 months out of the year, so really there’s only about 7 meetings where you need to
find someone to give us a demonstration, or maybe have an educational movie for
us, or bring someone in to do a talk. You don’t have to do any of these presentations
yourself! You just find and coordinate others to do it, and very often these are club
members that come in to do a program!
Secretary: Take notes at meetings and pick up the mail! That’s about it. Taking
notes is pretty easy, especially if you know some shorthand or you can bring a lap-
top and type them up right there! These minutes get emailed to the newsletter edi-
tor each month to go into THIS newsletter. There are plenty of meetings where we
don’t need to take notes like the December potluck and the July picnic, and in Au-
gust we take a break and don’t hold a meeting.
Treasurer: This one is pretty self explanatory too, keeping track of the funds in
the club is important but pretty straight forward. The treasurer and a couple of
volunteers perform an audit on the books once a year. The annual auction is an im-
portant time for the treasurer as the auction funds have to be cataloged, but there
are many volunteers to help out each year! You won’t be alone!!

Brad Smith’s Bench Tips
LAYOUT TOOLS
Dimensions on some features of a
design can be fluid while others
must be accurate for the design to
work. When precision on a piece is
important, good layout techniques
are essential.
These are the tools that I rely up-
on to get holes in the right place,
to achieve correct angles, and to
cut pieces the correct length.
I like crisp sharp lines to follow,
so I often coat surfaces with a
dark marker and scribe my layout
lines onto the metal. A square
makes quick work of checking
right angles or marking where to
cut, and the thin center punch
helps me mark a place to drill
holes exactly where I want them.
Finally, a good set of dividers is
probably my favorite layout tool.
They let me quickly mark a strip
for cutting, swing an arc, and di-
vide a line or curve into as many
equal segments as I need. I keep
at least one set of dividers in eve-
ry toolbox.
