Literacy KC is a non-profit organization providing no-cost, individualized tutoring services to adults in the great Kansas City area.
Our Mission To advance literacy within the Kansas City region through direct services, advocacy, and collaboration.
Our Vision Literacy For All
Literacy KC offers adults a welcoming community to improve their literacy skills, enhancing quality of life for them and
their families. With support from volunteers, donors, partners, and the community at large, Literacy KC invests in
Kansas City’s greatest asset – our people.
Each term, tutors, volunteers, and instructors build a collaborative learning environment where adult students expand
their reading, writing, math, and digital skills. With each term, a new group of students inspires a legacy of education
that results in a more positive and productive community.
Founded in 1985, Literacy KC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, the U.S. program division of ProLiteracy
Worldwide, and has grown to become the premiere area agency focused solely on adult literacy instruction through our
general program and hallmark method of one-to-one tutoring. Since its inception, Literacy KC has touched thousands
of what the United Way estimates as over 225,000 adults reading at or below the basic level of literacy- meaning
approximately fifth grade- throughout the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
Literacy KC has broadened the delivery of our literacy instruction to include innovative classroom-based programs
coupled with one-to-one tutoring, culminating in the GEARS Program – Guided Educational Access to Reading Skills –
in partnership with Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley. The GEARS program was established to address
the growing numbers of students in need of remediation prior to enrollment in credit- and tuition-bearing courses. In a
truly innovative opt-in approach that combines traditional classroom instruction with one-to-one tutoring, GEARS
provides an intensive focus on building reading skills.
The Family Reading Program is structured to combat the inter-generational cycle of illiteracy with a multi-generational
solution. This technology-driven approach to teaching literacy is in partnership with Mid-Continent Public Library,
Kansas City Public Library, and Connecting for Good. The program provides literacy instruction to metro parents and
their children, combining classroom instruction and one-on-one tutoring. The program includes digital literacy and life
skills instruction.
As supplementary instruction options, Literacy KC offers students in our literacy programs computer and math
instruction. We have a lab equipped with computers for students to use independently during our regular office hours,
and a number of tutors who can provide computer literacy instruction. There are also math tutors who work individually
with students, as well as a limited number of math classes offered at set times throughout the week.
These partners have joined forces with Literacy KC to establish satellite sites throughout the metro that extend our reach
into easily accessible locations where students take part in comprehensive literacy education. This instructor-led and
tutor-driven curriculum will include balanced literacy instruction, individualized lessons, family reading programs, digital
literacy, math, employment readiness, programming for English language learners, and more. To take part, students
must enroll through Literacy KC and participate in initial assessment and orientation, followed by program placement. For
specific enrollment information orientation dates, click the appropriate program link below.
Impact Initiative Programming
Literacy KC has developed a variety of programming geared toward serving specific client needs. These programs
include balanced literacy instruction, in combination with digital life skills classes, which include basic computer literacy,
smart phone usage, resume writing.
Ticket to Read
Students enrolled in the Ticket to Read Program will participate in a class that meets them where they are both
academically and geographically, in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library, the Mid-Continent Public Library,
Kansas City Parks & Recreation, and Reconciliation Services. The program combines small group instruction with
individualized tutoring with a specific focus on digital life skills.
The Family Reading Program
In partnership with the Kansas City, MO Public Schools, this program combines small group instruction with individualized
tutoring, serving the parents of elementary students in the district, with a specific focus on family literacy and digital life
skills. We believe that the parent is a child’s first and most important teacher; this program’s focus is on breaking the
cycle of multi-generational illiteracy.
Supplementary Instruction Opportunities
Students enrolled in any Literacy KC program have the opportunity to participate in elective courses, such as advanced
digital literacy courses (employment readiness, social media and smartphone integration) and Math instruction.
