SATCON Tutorial: Fundamentals of Satellite Communications Systems, Part 1 & 2This 2-hour seminar is addressed to government and enterprise professionals who need an introduction to satellite communications. The first hour will cover satellite basics including orbits, frequencies, digital transmission techniques and ground station technology for point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and full-mesh satellite communications networks. The second hour will discuss applications for communications satellites - including mission-critical private networks, disaster recovery, rural telephony and multicast. The seminar will conclude with an overview of recent and proposed communications satellite systems. This seminar will provide an understanding of when to use satellites and how satellites both compete and coexist with terrestrial communications. The attendee will obtain a knowledge of terminology and concepts that will be addressed in more detail during the two days of the SATCON Conference. Speaker: Burt H. Liebowitz, Principal Network Engineer, MITRE Corporation

RED Camera Tapeless Workflow in Adobe Video Tools Speaker: Dennis Radeke, Business Development Manager, AdobeThis session will demonstrate how you can edit and produce high-resolution raw digital cinematography on the desktop for faster, more affordable, and Hollywood-caliber results. Adobe® Creative Suite® 4 Production Premium software combined with the RED Digtal Cinema camera provides a truly native, color-rich, 4K tapeless camera workflow with no transcoding and no rewrapping.

Learn how you can import R3D files directly into Adobe Premiere® Pro, After Effects®, and Encore® without conversion, control the look when you edit, and dynamically change the resolution, applying color correction to the footage in full resolution, and then lowering the resolution on-the-fly to gain better performance from your hardware as you scrub through edits. Because Adobe Premiere Pro works directly with the sensor data, you can work with footage as close to what the lens saw as possible, opening up much richer, more powerful ways of working nondestructively on the color and look of your work.

HD Acquisition Choices and Equipment Quality: What are the Options? What are the trade offs among low cost HD acquisition systems, including cameras and lenses, versus high end systems? At first glance, pictures from cameras costing $10,000 and less can be impressive. But are these lasting impressions? What is the value of a high end camera with 2/3 inch imagers and a lens which alone can cost much more than a low cost camera and lens combination? With budgets particularly tight, equipment choices get tough. Before purchase decisions are completed, it is most important that expectations are managed and buyers fully understand the short and long term ramifications of their decisions.

This session will address:How the tradeoffs can impact the producer through the post production process. • The long term value of content produced with low cost equipment versus that acquired with high end equipment.•The technical and practical answers regarding the value of high cost, high performance equipment and compare this equipment to •low cost cameras and lenses.

Automatic Management of Aspect Ratio throughout the Television Delivery Chain using AFD.Speaker: Michel Proulx, CTO, Miranda

Now that the Analog shut down is finally behind us, 16x9 transmission has become the primary delivery format. But 4:3 will live on for some time both as legacy 4:3 content and delivery on basic cable and satellite platforms. For the foreseeable future, 4:3 and 16:9 will have to co-exist and careful management of aspect ratio translation remains an important challenge. This paper will provide an update on the use of AFD (advanced format descriptor) in broadcast and TV delivery plants and discuss where AFD is likely to play its next role: in the file based domain.

Optical Technologies and Advanced Workflows for Production and Broadcast OperationsSpeaker: Hugo Gaggioni, Chief Technology Officer & Vice President, Broadcast & Production Systems, Sony Electronics Inc.

In the current world of professional television the traditional practices of Audio/Video have, to a large extent, merged with those of the IT industry. Today, the use of file-based workflows, computer networks, asynchronous and non-linear operations along with tapeless media and acquisition devices have become key to improved data workflows, leading to much more efficient program production and lower operating costs. The Sony XDCAM family of tapeless products, have been widely accepted in applications, ranging from event videography and Electronic News Gathering to high-end television and cinema production. This talk will present a detailed description of the current and some future technologies in use in the implementation of these optical and memory-based products, their performance characteristics and the benefits of upcoming advanced workflows enabled by the capabilities of the XDCAM metadata system.
