Prayer I prayed, and prudence was given me;

I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. Wis 7:7 One of the most beautiful images of prayer in the Bible is found in the books of Jeremiah and the Psalms. It says: “One who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper” (Jer 17:7-8; Ps 1:3). What a reassuring image! Those who trust in the Lord will never be disappointed. Good prayer life is a sign of trust and confidence in God. Conversely, poor prayer life is a sign of lack of trust and confidence in God. In fact, poor prayer life is a sign of lack of faith – we are implicitly saying to God: “I don’t trust you. I don’t believe that you care about me or hear me. I’d rather be on my own.” But if we obey Jesus and “pray always without becoming weary” (Lk 18:1), we will experience an outpouring of God’s grace and blessings in our lives. We will flourish like the palm tree and grow like a Lebanon cedar (Ps 92:13). Unfortunate, most of us don’t reap these benefits because we have no time for prayer. We are too busy for prayer and for God. And yet when things go wrong, we are quick to complain or express our anger and frustration against God. We easily forget the rule clearly stated by Jesus: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Mt 7:7). The rule does not say, “do nothing and God will give you what you want.” It says, ask, seek and knock. It doesn’t also say, “ask once a week at Mass or once in a while when we are in dire need.” On the contrary, Jesus wants us “to pray always without becoming weary.” He wants prayer to be our way of life. St. Francis de Sales once said, “We should pray at least thirty minutes every day, except when we are busy, then we should pray for one hour.” God yearns to lavish his blessings on us if we open up to him in prayer. Remember, the taste of the pudding is in the eating. If the Scripture says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Ps 34:8), then we can only know how good God is by constantly asking, seeking and knocking at his door. “For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Mt 7:8).

La Oración Supliqué y se me concedió la prudencia;

(Mt 7, 8).

Contrary to popular belief, I am actually an introvert. When I’m on retreats or at events where they want to do icebreaker activities I would prefer not to at first. I like to go out and do things but with a select few. But when it’s for Ministry things I am an extrovert. I like a balance to my life and for me this is a good way to do so. However, at those events where I first don’t want to share, once I do, I break out and my extrovert side comes out. I love this time of year when we are getting to know our year 1 teens because I get to see all their different personalities and how they interact with everyone. Whether we want to admit it or not, we all crave social interaction, even introverts. However, we crave it at different levels and that why some are shy versus those who are outgoing and have no problem sharing. Sometimes I wish we had icebreakers after or before church to get to know other parishioners. There are a lot of parishioners whose faces I know but I don’t know their name. I can tell you things about them like habits or demeanor, I can even tell you how certain people receive communion on Sundays, but I don’t really know these people by name. My challenge this week to our teens and to all of you is to get to know someone in the pews who you don’t know. I know it’s scary and pushes us out of our comfort zones, but this is the first step towards building community. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2018-2019 SCHOOL STUDENT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, national origin, and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single-sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student's emotional, academic, and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student's needs. This Catholic Elementary School publishes the above policy in the staff and parent/student handbooks, public ccrelations/recruitment brochures and in other publications such as the parish bulletin and school newspaper. The school also publishes applicable grievance procedures in the staff and parent/student handbooks.

Did You Know? Mutual Respect is Key for Friendships Published on 10/8/2018

Your child will make many friends throughout his lifetime. As children grow, their interests change and develop, and they meet many new people along the way. But as children make new friends, mutual respect should be the guiding principle of these relationships. Parents, talk to your children about how they should feel in a friendship — true friends care about each other and respect each other’s thoughts and feelings and personal boundaries. If your child isn’t receiving respect from her friends, she is learning to accept less than she deserves in a relationship. And if she is the one who doesn’t give respect to her friends, she is learning emotional power. For more information on teaching your children about true friendships, email [email protected].

Sacred Heart Memorial Mass

During the month of November, it is customary to honor our deceased relatives and friends. On Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the 10:30 Mass, we will be honoring our loved ones who have died during the year (after November 2017) in a special way. Their names will be read aloud and a family member will receive a candle in their memory. The names of our deceased will be displayed on scrolls during November in the church. You may bring a framed picture of your loved one - no larger than 8" x 10" - (with your name on the back) to be displayed on the altar during the Memorial Mass. Please remember to pick up the picture before you leave to go to the reception after mass. If you have a loved one who died this past year (after November of 2017) and their Memorial celebration was not held at Sacred Heart, you may submit his or her name to be included in our Memorial Mass and inscribed on our scroll. You must submit the name by October 15th so that it can be included in our Memorial celebration. Please call Michele Kipp at (805) 659-2416.
