Te U.S. government shutdown is making it harderor the State Department to review the Keystone XLpipeline permit process, a State Department ocial saidthis past Tursday, which could delay President Barack Obama’s decision on the project.

Te State Department — which is in charge o thepipeline permit process because Keystone XL wouldcross the national border — had been expected toissue a nal environmental review in mid-Octoberor ransCanada Corp’s pipeline that would help link

Canada’s oil sands to reneries in exas.Te ocial would not say how long any delay on the

application process would last. ransCanada initially applied or a permit more than ve years ago.

Aer the environmental review is nalized, eight U.S. agencies will have 90 days to comment onwhether the pipeline is in the national interest. At thatpoint, the State Department will make a determinationon whether the pipeline should be approved.

Delays in that review could push back Obama’s naldecision on the pipeline, which had not been expecteduntil some time in early 2014.

he Keystone XL Pipeline Project is a proposed 1,179-mile, 36-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, beginningin Hardisty, Alberta, and extending south to Steele

City, Nebraska. Tis pipeline is a critical inrastructureproject or the energy security o the United States andor strengthening the American economy.

Along with transporting crude oil rom Canada, theKeystone XL Pipeline will also support the signicantgrowth o crude oil production in the United Statesrom producers in the Bakken region o Montana andNorth Dakota.

Why not complain that the House gym is gross anddoesn’t have enough towels?

Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) pointed out some “real”pain and suering in a recent interview, when he defectedcalls or the gym to be closed amid the shutdown by noting there weren’t even clean towels in it.

“Tere’s hardly anybody working down there.Tere’s no towel service, we’re doing our own laundry down there,” he said. “And we pay a ee to belong to theHouse gym. So this is no dierent than i you’re workingor an employer that oers a wellness program. You pay a ee to belong, that’s what we do there.”

Other lawmakers have also complained about thegyms getting disgusting with only a heavily depletedsta on hand.

Blood-sucking insects may be the bane o yoursummer picnics, but they’ve been around or ar, arlonger: according to new research, mosquitoes that eedon blood have been around or at least 46 million years.

Researchers led rom the Smithsonian’s NationalMuseum o Natural History made the discovery by studying ossilized mosquitoes. Eventually, they cameacross one that appeared to still be lled with its nalmeal o blood — though that may not sound like a rarephenomenon, it is. Te researchers write that such anding has never been described beore.

Te blood-engorged mosquito was ound innorthwestern Montana. Researchers say that its deathmust have been a quick one: it likely ed, was blown into apond or similar structure, and quickly sunk to the bottomwhere it was encased in sediment.

Te ancient insect died when the spectacularmountain ranges in Montana, where it was dug up, had

just nished orming. It was so well-preserved because ithad been trapped in shale — a type o mudstone in whichorganic remains decompose much more slowly — andthe so mud material that surrounded it compressed thecreature’s body without distorting it.

Te ne grain size o shale also preserves more detailsand the process o ossilisation is much like holding theossil fat and pressing it like a book protects a dried

fower. It was one o two mosquitoes discovered in theshale deposits that reveal just how remarkably little theparasites have changed in the last 46 million years.

It is the rst discovery o its kind despite themisconception o dinosaur DNA recovery rommosquitoes preserved in amber popularized by StevenSpielberg’s movie “Jurassic Park” released in 1993.

Although large and ragile molecules such as DNAgenerally do not survive ossilisation, the mosquitoproves certain complex organic molecules such as haemcan be preserved. Researchers don’t know what kind o animal the blood came rom, since hemoglobin-derivedporphyrins amongst dierent animals appear to beidentical.

Te discovery also shows that “blood-lledmosquitoes were already eeding at that time, suggesting

that they were around much earlier and could have ed ondinosaurs which rst appeared during the riassic period,231.4 million years ago, and were the dominant terrestrial

vertebrates or 135 million years, rom the beginning o theJurassic (about 201 million years ago) until the end o theCretaceous (66 million years ago), when the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event led to the extinction o mostdinosaur groups at the close o the Mesozoic Era.
