THE OSAGE APPLE The Osage apple, sometimes called the hedge apple, horse apple, monkey ball, or the Osage orange, is a fruit that, while not poisonous, is also not especially edible, for humans or for animals. The latex juice it secretes is sticky and acidic, and can irritate skin. The woody meat inside the Osage apple resembles (in texture but not taste) a cross between a pineapple and a jackfruit, and reportedly tastes like the bitter rind of a melon or cucumber. The fruit is difficult to open, and does not germinate easily, although the seeds do sprout well in elephant dung, suggesting to some researchers that now-extinct animals like mastadons and mammoths may have played a role in the evolution of this fruit.

"The Osage Apple."

Pickleball photos provided by Tracy Sator.

Osage trees in the U.S. were grown not for their fruit, but for their wood, with Native Americans and early settlers valuing the strong, flexible, durable wood for their bows. Meriwether Lewis found the Osage tree and its fruit so novel that he sent some cuttings and samples back to President Thomas Jefferson from his expedition in 1804. Osage apples have been used as household decor since the mid-1800s with its pretty, bright green color and interesting bumpy texture making for a more appealing table centerpiece than a snack! Have you seen the Osage apple growing around Innsbrook?
