Wellfleet, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, has been considered the home

of one of the world’s great oyster beds for generations. This history

created a fertile environment for the Wellfleet OysterFest to emerge.

In its 19th year, the ‘Fest has become the premiere street festival on

Cape Cod, and one of the premiere fall events in New England.

The event attracts 20,000 attendees to experience Wellfleet’s coastal

culture and celebrate the town's famous oysters and clams. Locals

and visitors alike return year after year for a weekend full of

hometown flavor and big time fun!

Event programming and entertainment is focused on creating

awareness about the marine environment with the goal of uniquely

connecting attendees with the products, services and organizations

featured at the event; our programming is particularly focused on

connecting visitors with shellfish and promoting their

understanding of the environment and other issues facing our

shellfish harvesters.

Something for Everyone…The Wellfleet OysterFest is content rich offering something for everyone including fine art and craft exhibitors, non-profit and

community partner displays, regional food vendors including raw bars operated by Wellfleet shellfishermen, educational

programs such as lectures and films, culinary demonstrations featuring regional chefs, children's activities, shellfish farm tours,

live music and the annual Oyster Shuck Off competition.

The Culinary programs offer an opportunity for the wine partner to engage intimately with our food and wine loving audience.

These programs include the OysterFest kick-off event on Columbus Day weekend, the First Oyster: Art & Oyster Crawl, and

the signature event Taste of the Merroir & Terroir held during the OysterFest.

AudienceCore attendees are 60 and under and include young families, upper income second homeowners and highly educated seasonalvisitors and residents. Because of Wellfleet’s reputation for exceptional shellfish and high end art galleries, the event attracts foodenthusiasts and art appreciators.

Attendee geography spans Cape Cod and Massachusetts residents primarily but also reaches the greater New England region andbeyond. The ‘Fest is estimated to generate over $2 million dollars of income for the region and Cape Cod businesses (retail, restaurant and lodging industries).

Ideal partners include organizations or companies that look for like-minded, cause related exposure in line with their owncorporate mission or strategies; such entities may have environmental, cultural, and culinary attributes to their businesses.Consumer and packaged goods products such as food items and lifestyle brands are also an ideal match.

The Wellfleet OysterFest is a highly regarded brand. Visitors leave with an overwhelmingly positive impression of the brand and

its partners - that is in itself a huge word-of-mouth marketing benefit.

The ‘Fest Helps the Environment

The Wellfleet OysterFest strives to be a ‘green event’ by minimizing waste and recycling as much as possible including

the oyster and clam shells. Over 130,000 pieces of shellfish were shucked at last year’s event and 5.2 tons of the shells

were recycled. This effort reduced the solid waste stream by nearly half! These shells are then reintroduced to Wellfleet

Harbor to create habitat for shellfish and other marine species, improve water quality by filtering particles and

pollutants, and protecting the shoreline by creating a natural barrier from erosion.

The Shell Recycling program was developed in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA) and the Town of Wellfleet. To date approximately 40 tons of shells have been returned to the

harbor. For this effort, SPAT and its collaborators have received a state Municipal Innovation Award and a Clearwater

Award for Excellence on the waterfront from the Waterfront Center.

SPAT is committed to helping the environment and maintaining healthy, plastic-free waterways - the source of

Wellfleet’s tasty shellfish. This year, SPAT will take its recycling efforts one step further by eliminating the use of all

plastics at the event. Beverages will be served from cans or reusable branded stainless cups, water refilling stations will

keep attendees hydrated and food vendors will serve food items on backyard compostable products. A cleaner,

‘greener’ ‘Fest creates a cleaner environment and keeps our waterways healthy.

Founder

The ‘Fest is produced by Wellfleet SPAT, Shellfish

Promotion and Tasting, Inc. A non-profit organization

founded in 2002 in order to sustain the local shellfishing

and aquaculture industries. Even the name honors the

oyster. The acronym SPAT is also the name for a baby

oyster.

More than 150 wild commercial harvesters, 134 grant

lease holders and many more employees are involved in

the industry representing 30 percent of the town’s

population. Their oyster and clam sales generate more

than $6.8M for local shellfishermen, highlighting the

importance of the shellfish industry as an economic

engine for the town.

SPAT is committed to sustaining this industry for

generations to come.

Beneficiaries

Proceeds from the ‘Fest and other fundraising

activities support the organization’s mission

through a college scholarship program,

community grant awards and other initiatives to

support the shellfishing industry and the local

economy. To date, SPAT has awarded over

$514,000 between the high school scholarship

program and its community grants awards.
