ASCENSION MUSIC MINISTRY A FOND FAREWELL Just a few months ago Ascension Parish celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Very few parishioners are aware that our multi-talented musician Jennifer Konzem has given her heart, soul, and talent to the Music Ministry from the very beginning days of our parish. It is with sadness that we see her leave us after October 2, and go to Holy Spirit Church to share her talent with that congregation. However, we are so very grateful for the musical inspiration she has given Ascension liturgies through her playing of piano and organ, accompanying (currently the Spirit and Song Ensemble and the Ascension Adult Choir), singing, and choir directing. We have been fortunate to have Jennifer with us for so long! Jennifer, we wish you much happiness and fulfillment in your new position. Thank you for your music, your loving generous spirit, and the devotion you have shown this parish. We will miss you dearly! Soli Deo Gloria

EDITH STEIN MOVIE October 18, 7:00PM Youth Ctr.

Edith Stein is a moving, artistic portrayal of the life of Jewish philosopher, Catholic convert and Carmelite martyr, Edith Stein, capturing the interior struggles of this extraordinary woman, as well as the great conflicts from her decision to convert to Catholicism. Deeply influenced by the writings of St. Teresa of Avila, she joined the Carmelites and took the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and was put to death in Auschwitz in 1942, and canonized by John Paul II in 1998. This film shows how two worlds were united within her, the Jew and the Christian, in absolute coherence in her search for truth. She has become one of the most beautiful symbols in a horrifying period of history who sought to transform her sufferings under the Nazis into a journey through the “interior castle” as the way to mystical union with God. One phrase, “Love Conquers Fear” embodies her philosophy of life. Please register using the form in the Ascent, there is no cost.

PRAYER WITH FR. ALESSANDRO October 12, 9:30AM or 7:00PM St. Matthew Rm.

Descriptions of prayer are abundant throughout Christian history. "True prayer," wrote St. Augustine, "is nothing but love." Prayer should arise from the heart. "Prayer," said St. John Vianney, "is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself." "Everyone of us needs half an hour of prayer each day," remarked St. Francis de Sales, "except when we are busy - then we need an hour." Definitions of prayer are important, but insufficient. There is a huge difference between knowing about prayer and praying. On this issue, the Rule of St. Benedict is clear, "If a man wants to pray, let him go and pray." Fr. Alessandro will take you through different kinds and ways to pray to help you find what works best for you in this one morning/night presentation. Please register using the form in the Ascent, there is no cost.

OVERVIEW OF SALVATION HISTORY October 19, 7:00PM (One Night Talk) St. Matthew Rm. Do you know the story? Come hear the story on the main events in Salvation History and understand how it all fits together. This short overview will show how the narrative thread weaves its way through scripture, how other books of the bible fit in the picture, and how the Great Adventure Bible Timeline Series really helps improve an overall understanding of scripture. We will build in time for answers; so come with your questions. Please register using the form in the Ascent, there is no cost. Bring your Bible.

ASCENSION BOOK CLUB October 12, 1:00PM Conference Rm.

Our book for October is Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. We will meet on October 12 at 1:00pm in the conference room. For details call Linda Cook at 913-897-3201. Come join our discussion!

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Taking Care of Business

When we were kids, my brothers and sisters and I thought that you were not supposed to say the blessing before meals in a restaurant. You were not supposed to flaunt your faith in public. It probably had more to do with fear of being embarrassed if non-believers saw us praying. I think of that when I hear St. Paul telling Timothy, "God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7). All three readings mention the difficulties that people of faith will encounter, and each reading has its own way of facing those hardships. Jesus gives the practical advice: Look at the difficulties of being a disciple as just part of your job. No servant expects to be praised by his master for doing his job. So if the Lord says I must forgive those who hurt me, or be patient with customers, or share what I have with the poor--no problem; it's part of the job of a disciple. If someone I know is in pain, I'm there to support them. Too tired to go to church after work on a holy day? Just taking care of business. So how do we get the strength and self-control to roll with the punches? Paul reminds us in the second reading to stir the gifts of the Spirit into flame. If you take time to pray every day, if you look for God in other people, if you see difficulties as your share of the cross--you'll find those gifts of faith, power, love, and self-control beginning to grow stronger inside. We can trust that this is more than just wishful thinking by going to the first reading. When the prophet cries out for help with the misery and violence in the world, he hears God's promise that the vision (of hope for deliverance) will be fulfilled even if it seems to be delayed. We too hear that promise when we start to get discouraged, for God's promise "will not disappoint" (Habakkuk 2:3).

MINISTRY OF CARE CarePortal is helping local churches meet local needs they never knew about, while fostering cross-congregational cooperation and building new relationships based on goodwill and increased understanding. They send out an email, with the needs of the family explained, and we can help by clicking on the email. For monetary requests, Social Concerns will provide the money. I will be emailing out the requests that I think we can help with, (for example some material requests, like beds, baby items, kitchen table, washer and dryer so far). I will be emailing different active ministries. If you have any household items and are in no hurry to get them out of your house, let me know. If you can help with transporting things to the needy families, I would love to have your name! Contact Jean in the office if you want to help or for more information at 913-681-3348 or [email protected].

MARRIAGE MINUTE October 2

Have you ever “tuned out” your spouse or said, “There he goes again, or she never listens to me.” While this is not uncommon, it can reveal a road block to greater intimacy in marriage and with God. The spousal relationship between husband and wife mirrors the relationship we have with God. If we take God for granted, we will tend to take our wife for granted. If we take our spouse for granted, we will tend to take God for granted. This week’s Psalm gives us great advice for either scenario, “If today you hear His voice, harden not your heart.” If you want to improve your relationship with God, start with more attentive listening to your spouse. Devote your entire attention to the one you love. To improve listening, remember: • Eye contact • Repeat back what you hear • Listening is different than waiting to talk • Turn off the phone or TV to avoid the temptation of distraction
