Pheasant Tasting

From October 22-27, 5100+ pheasants will be released on 40 sites, all within an hour’s drive from Taber. Here’s what you need to know:

• Release sites are not open to public hunting. Hunters must be selected in a draw to reserve a hunting time and location to ensure a quality experience.

• Up to four hunters are allowed on each release site for either a morning (sunrise until 1:00 pm) or an afternoon (1:00 pm until sunset).

• Hunting on these release sites is free; however, they are private properties (provided by local landowners). You must have permission, in the form of the Pheasant Festival permission slip, to enter the site.

• Before going hunting, you must pick up your Pheasant Festival permission slip and hunt package at the Taber Pheasant Festival Office.

ALL HUNTERS REQUIRE A GAME BIRD LICENCE AND A PHEASANT LICENCE and are required to follow all hunting regulations.

Novice Shoots: October 20–21New hunters learn gun safety, shoot clay targets, and receive shooting instruction from mentors. After instruction, novice hunters hunt pheasants with a mentor. Novice shoots are free. However, as space is limited, you must pre-register and pay a $20 deposit to reserve your spot. This deposit will be returned to you at the novice shoot.

The annual Taber Pheasant Festival is Canada’s biggest hunting festival. Entering its eighth year, the festival continues to grow in popularity with 100 novice hunters now coming out to receive mentored instruction, 700 regular hunters, over 5,000 pheasants released on reserved sites, and community events throughout the week, including a pheasant-tasting culinary evening. The festival brings attention and support to upland game bird habitat, fosters positive hunter/landowner relationships, and with limited hunting spots, is now a sought-after hunting event. Fundraising through sponsorships, raffles, festival merchandise sales, a silent auction, and banquet ticket sales are directed to continuing upland game bird research and conservation efforts.
