The book fills a serious gap in the literature considering the non-linear mass transfer effects and becomes a logical continuation of well-known ideas developed by Levich in “Physicochemical hydro- dynamics “ and Frank-Kamenetzki in “Diffusion and heat transfer in chemical kinetics” discuss the linear mass transfer theory only. In Part I of the book (Chr. Boyadjiev) the non- linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive inter- phase mass transfer in the gas (liquid) -solid sur- face, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is consid- ered. The diffusion boundary layer approximation as well as in flat channels taking the longitudinal diffusion into account is considered. The influence of the direction of the intensive interphase mass transfer on the heat transfer and the multi-compo- nent mass transfer is illustrated. Part II (based on the studies of V. Krylov) dis- cusses the non-linear mass transfer in electrochemi- cal systems with high current density on the examples of the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyte flow and the electro-separation of metals out of con- centrated solutions. The theory of the measured elec- trochemical treatment of metals and alloys, which is a method of a wide practical use, has been elabo- rated on this basis. In Part III (Chr. Babak) concerns the chemical reac- tion kinetics in stationary two-phase systems at an arbitrary contact time between phases. The large concentration gradients induce secondary flows at the phases interface, which, depending on the di- rection of the interphase mass transfer, represent suc- tion from or injection into the boundary layer, which enhances or lowers the hydrodynamic stability of the flow in the boundary layer. In Part V (Chr. Boyadjiev) these effects are con- sidered in the approximations of the linear theory of the hydrodynamic stability of almost parallel flows. In the systems with intensive interphase mass transfer besides the effect of non-linear mass trans- fer the Marangoni effect could also show up. The non-linear mass transfer theory is under an in-tensive development with serious contribution of theauthors. The book fills a serious gap in the literatureconsidering the non-linear mass transfer effects andbecomes a logical continuation of well-known ideasdeveloped by Levich in “Physicochemical hydro-dynamics “ and Frank-Kamenetzki in “Diffusion andheat transfer in chemical kinetics” discuss the linearmass transfer theory only.

In Part I of the book (Chr. Boyadjiev) the non-linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive inter-phase mass transfer in the gas (liquid) -solid sur-face, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is consid-ered. The diffusion boundary layer approximationas well as in flat channels taking the longitudinaldiffusion into account is considered. The influenceof the direction of the intensive interphase masstransfer on the heat transfer and the multi-compo-nent mass transfer is illustrated.

Part II (based on the studies of V. Krylov) dis-cusses the non-linear mass transfer in electrochemi-cal systems with high current density on the examplesof the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyteflow and the electro-separation of metals out of con-centrated solutions. The theory of the measured elec-trochemical treatment of metals and alloys, whichis a method of a wide practical use, has been elabo-rated on this basis.

In Part III (Chr. Boyadjiev) the non-linear masstransfer in the chemically reacting systems is con-

sidered in the cases of: non-linearity of the equa-tions of the chemical reaction’s kinetics and inten-sive interphase mass transfer or thermo-capillaryeffect due to chemical reactions. On this basis, themechanisms and the macro-kinetics of the chemicaltransformations in the gas-liquid systems are dis-cussed.

Part IV (V. Babak) concerns the chemical reac-tion kinetics in stationary two-phase systems at anarbitrary contact time between phases. Report on the 8th Italian National Heat Transfer ConferenceCernobbio, Italy

geometric design based on the CFD analysis results.In his lecture, Prof. Marrucci faced implications risenon heat transfer by viscoelastic fluids, inasmuch asmost of the industrial chemicals and many fluids inthe food processing and biochemical industries areviscoelastic and undergo heat exchange processeither during their preparation or in their applicationFinally, the last two lectures dealt with two-phaseflow. The former critically considered mesoscalevs. microscale phenomena in a diabatic bubbly flow,providing a computational framework to predict bothglobal and local characteristics, such as convectivecoefficients and CHF. The latter presented a detailedand very intersting analysis, supported by visualobservations by means of high speed mooviessupport and quantitative measurements, of eventsand mechanisms leading to CHF in subcooled flowboiling from the onset of thermal crisis up to heaterburnout.

The technical papers presented were 77 (41 inEnglish) and most of them showed a good scientificor engineering relevance. The papers wereconcerned with the conference themes as below

1. thermal-fluid dynamics of single-phase flowsystem (21 papers);

2. thermal-fluid dynamics of two- phase flowsystem (19 papers);

3. computational thermal-fluid dynamics (17papers);

4. heat transfer in high density power plants (9papers);

5. heat transfer in the enviromental control system(7 papers);

6. bio-fluid dynamics (4 papers).

Among the papers of the first session, 6 papersreported experimental results obtained by means ofnon-intrusive optical methods, ranging fromdynamic thermography to speckle photography,whereas thermal characteristics of enhanced surfaceswere the object of other 5 papers. In the two-phaseflow session, 5 papers faced boiling problems

The 18th Italian National Heat Transfer Conferencewas held in Cernobbio, Italy, and it was organisedby the Politecnico of Milan under the auspices ofUIT, the Italian society for thermal-fluid dynamics.Since UIT conferences were started in 1983, theyhave become established as a premier forum for theItalian researchers in thermal sciences and heattransfer where scientific and technical ideas may beexchanged.

Cernobbio is a charming town on Lake Comocoast, 5 chilometers from Como itself. For the beautyof the landscape and the richness of the historical-artistic patrimony, the Lake Como is a favorite placeof the international tourist in northern Italy.

The Conference followed broadly the samepattern as in the late UIT conferences, namely, with4 invited lectures and the technical papers presentedin 6 Poster Sessions. Each poster session wasintroduced by the chairman who gave a criticalpresentation of the contributed papers.

The invited lectures of this year were thefollowing:

• Pushing Back the limits for CFD, by Dr. MichaelEngelman, Fluent Inc.

• Some implications of non-newtonian fluiddynamics on heat transfer, by Prof. GiuseppeMarrucci, University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

• Multi-scale analysis of diabatic bubbly flow, byProf. Iztok Zun , University of Ljubljana,Slovenia.

• Visual investigation of boiling phenomena inCHF subcooled flow boiling, by Dr. Gian PieroCelata, ENEA, Institute of Thermal-FluidDynamic, Rome, Italy.

The first lecture offered an important point ofview on the state-of-art of CFD technology andresearch activities. Report on 4th Minsk International Seminar “Heat Pipes, Heat Pumps, Refrigerators”4-7 September, 2000, Minsk, Belarus

4-7 September, 2000 in Minsk , Belarus was heldthe 4th Minsk International Seminar and Exhibition“Heat Pipes, Heat Pumps, Refigerators”. This is a Fourth biennial Minsk International Semi-nar and exhibition “HEAT PIPES, HEAT PUMPS,REFRIGERATORS” since 1993 under the auspicesof NIS Association “Heat Pipes”, Luikov Heat andMass Transfer Institute, National Academy of Sci-ences of Belarus, International Institute of Refrig-eration and some other Ministries and Institutions. The main goal of these meetings is still the same –to provide an opportunity for scientists and engi-neers particularly from the Former Soviet Union andits neighboring countries to meet the researchers andspecialists from western countries and the worldleading countries in the field of heat pipes, sorptionheat pumps and refrigerators. There are well knownmeetings all over the world in the field of heat pipesand sorption machines. Today International HeatPipe Conferences have a very good reputation since1973, the date of the First Heat pipe Conference inStuttgart ( Groll, 1973). The next Conferences werein Bologna (Busse, 1976), London (Reay, 1081),Tsukuba (Oshima, 1984),Grenoble (Curtilla, 1987),Minsk (Vasiliev, 1990), Beijing (Tongze Ma, 1992),Albuquerque (Merrigan, 1995), Stuttgart (Groll,1997), Tokyo (Maezawa, 1999). Heat pumps and refrigerators Conferences such,as Stockholm (Wettermark, 1980), Paris (CEC,1985), Tokyo (Watanabe, 1991), Paris (Meunier,1992), New Orleans (Redermacher, 1994),Montreal (Nikanpour, Hosatte, 1996), Munich(Ziegler, 1999). Minsk International Seminars ( 1993, 1995, 1997,2000) are a middle size designed scientific meet-ings oriented on beneficial application of heat pipesin sorption machines. The main goal of Minsk Semi-nar is to combine efforts of heat pipe specialists and

sorption machines specialists to solve the problemof heat and mass transfer enhancement in naturefriendly heat pumps, refrigerators, heat exchangersand to improve the ecology of our planet and re-duce the energy consumption. The second impor-tant problem to solve is the electronic equipmentthermal control (computers, Telecom systems, spaceenvironmental two-phase thermal control technol-ogy, et.). The first reason to this activity with Minsk Semi-nar foundation was a USSR patent pending No.174411 “Heat Pipe” ( B. I. 24, 30.06.1992). Thisdevice combines the enhanced heat and mass trans-fer in conventional heat pipes with sorption phe-nomena of sorbent bed inside it. It means, that thisdevice could be used as a sorption machine elementand be cooled and heated as a heat pipe. The 4th Minsk Seminar Proceedings incorporate50 papers, including 8 invited lectures. Approxi-mately 60 participants attended this Seminar , rep-resenting 17 countries, such as:Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, USA, France, Germany,Holland, Canada, South Africa, China, Korea, Ja-pan, India, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania. The contributions were presented as oral lectures,or as posters. If you compare the discussions fromthe meeting in 1993 (First Minsk Seminar) with to-day program you may be amazed how modest theprogress is: solid sorption machines still are said tobe at the edge of breakthrough and need to be com-petitive to mechanical vapor compression heatpumps and refrigerators. But heat pipe technologyprogress for today is evident - miniature heat pipesare used in 80% of Notebook Pcs produced in mil-lions in the world. Heat pipe technology in the near future will be agood opportunity to change the sorption chillerstechnology and improve its performance. The most

including bubble dynamics and electric-field effects,3 papers dealt with convective condensation withboth traditional and new refrigerants, and 4 paperswere concerned with adiabatic two-phase flows.Among 17 papers of the computational fluid-dynamics session, more than half ones (9) reportedon work performed by commercial code, furtherconfirming that CFD codes are a current tool in theengineering activities. Most papers of the session 4dealt with modelling of thermal-hydraulicphenomena in fission or fusion reactors. Thermalanalisys of building components were consideredin 5 papers of the session 5, whereas the other twowere concerned with heat transfer in porous media.Finally, in the bio-fluid dinamyc session twointeresting problems are faced, i.e., a fluid-structure

approach for the study of a pulsatile pump and anumerical investigation of transport and absorptionphenomena of blood solutes.

Finally, the Conference was attended by morethan 100 people, included about 20 foreigners. Forthe number of contributed papers and partecipants,this edition resulted particulary successful.

important change in this field is sorption machinesefficiency, compactness and reliability. Unfortu-nately till now sorption heat pumps and refrigera-tors are considered as a niche technology not so wellknown for the engineers. Therefore not only the in-dustry, but academia also is responsible of futureprogress in this area. We believe that such a way ofdealing with scientific matters will promote personalcontacts, extremely needed for scientists and engi-

Report on CHISA 2000 Congress, Symposium on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)

14th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering,

The CHISA 2000 congress was organizedby the Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. Thecongress was composed of 9 general topics and 10specialized symposia. One of these was Symposiumon Computational Fluid Dynamics whose aim wasto review the latest developments and to provide astimulating atmosphere for critical and research ini-tiatives.

The title of the plenary lecture presented byProf. H. Van den Akker from Delft University ofTechnology, Netherlands was “Computational fluiddynamics: more than promise to chemical engineer-ing”. By virtue of recent dazzling growth in com-puter power, the description of chemical engineer-ing problems in local terms by means of Computa-tional Fluid Dynamics has become quite feasible.In the plenary lecture, the state of the art of CFDwas presented and illustrated with sample flow fieldsobtained via various types of CFD. The relevanceof such simulations for the chemical engineer wasdemonstrated for a number of cases (e.g., chemicalreactors, cyclones, crystallizers). The CFD is thusbecoming the essential tool of chemical engineer-ing.

More than 20 oral and a number of posterpresentations at the Symposium on CFD compro-mised the following main topics:· General papers· Mixing processes· Multiphase reactors· Heat and mass transport· Applications to reaction engineering· Microfluidics· Turbulence applications· Viscous flows

The lectures at the Symposium on CFD

raised a stimulating discussion on interesting prob-lems, for example:·Large eddy simulations for industrial flows,·Dynamic simulations of multiphase flows in

bubble column reactors,·Influence of dispersed solid phase on flow field

in jet loop reactors,·CFD calculations of two-phase flow on elements

of structured packing,·Application of the Euler/Lagrange approach to

liquid-solid flows in stirred vessels,·CFD simulations of particle distribution in an

unbafled high-aspect ratio stirred vessel,·Verification of CFD predictions by tracer experi-

ments,·Estimation of oxygen mass transfer in activated

sludge aeration tanks by CFD modeling,·Simulation of turbulent mixing in precipitation

reactors,·CFD predictions of gas explosions in a baffled,

vented enclosure,·Prediction of flow profiles in rotating basket re-

actor, etc.More than 1100 participants and more than

1200 papers have been registered at CHISA 2000.The full texts of all lectures and posters submittedto the CHISA 2000 congress were distributed toall participants on the CD-ROM. The next inter-national CHISA congress will be held in 2002 inPrague.

Report on the 1st JSMF Annual MeetingJuly 13-14, 2000, Sendai, Japan

The first JSMF Annual Meeting was held by theJapanese Society for Multiphase Flow, in Sendai,Japan, July 13-14, 2000. This national meeting wasfirst organized jointly with the 19th Multiphase FlowSymposium 2000 which has took place every yearunder the sponsorship of Science Council of Japan.The meeting gave multiphase flow scientists, engi-neers and students an opportunity to get togetherfor discussing the wide range of multiphase flowproblems and for promoting the interchange of re-cent information and new ideas.

The meeting was attended by 228 participants.

Total 122 oral presentations were made in 6 orga-nized sessions, 1 symposium session and 8 generalsessions. The 2nd JSMF Annual Meeting will beheld in July 12-13, 2001 and Prof. S. Yuu, KyushuInstitute of Technology, will organize it.

The fourth international conference onsupercomputing in nuclear applications (SNA2000)was held in Tokyo, Japan, on September 4-7. Theobjective of the conference was to present the new-est research results using numerical simulations in awide variety of scientific and engineering fields, andto promote and encourage the introduction of com-puting technologies to research and developmentfields. Twelve oral sessions and two poster sessionswere included in the conferece: High PerformanceComputing Infrastructre I,II,III, High PerformanceComputing Hardware, Reactor Engineering I,II,Material Science and Bioscience I,II, Fluid andStructural Engineering I,II, Environmental Science,and Radiation and Photon Science and Basic Re-search Fields. There were 16 invited talks, 30 oralpresentations, and nearly 40 poster presentations.Among them, 15 presentations were related to fluidengineering: 4 for the plant analyses, 3 for turbulentflows, 2 for CFD-code analyses, 2 for fluid-struc-ture interactions, 2 for basic two-phase flow analy-ses, 1 for sodium combustion, and 1 for reactiveflows. There were 5 oral presentations for fluid en-gineering as follows.

In the invited talk entitled “Overview of theSimulation System ‘IMPACT’ for Analysis ofNuclear Power Plant Thermal Hydraulics and Se-vere Accidents,” the development of the code sys-tem for analysing thermal-hydraulic phenomenaduring accidents of reactors was presented by Dr.Naitoh of NUPEC. In two presentations, the Star-CD code was used for detailed calculations in thecore: one was for sub-channel analyses of PWRentitled “High Fidelity Thermal-Hydraulic Analy-

sis Using CFD and Massively Paralle Computers”by the ANL group in US, and the other for designcalculations of the accelerator driven system entitled“Large scale numerical simulations for the designof the Energy Amplifier Demonstration Facility” byCRS4 group in Italy. The development of the codesystem for analyses of sodiumcombustion entitled“Numerical Methodology for Sodium CombustionEvaluation of Fast Reactor” was presented by Dr.Yamaguchi of JNCRI. The development of the ther-mal-hydraulic code was reported in two presenta-tions: one was for industrial large eddy simulationsentitled “PRICELES: A Development Platform forIndustrial Large Eddy Simulations” by the CEAgroup in France, and the other for reactive flowsolver codes entitled “Reactive Flow Simulationsin Complex Geometries with High-PerformanceSupercomputing” by the FZJ group in Germany.

In nuclear related fluid engineering fields, largescale numerical simulations using supercomputersor clusters are widely performed including parallelcomputations and graphics. The research area isranging from detailed flow structures in two-phaseand turbulent flows to complicated phenomena andplant dynamics during sever accidents. Numericalsimulations are already one of the important tech-nologies and will be more and more important forflow analyses in nuclear applications.

The 3rd International Symposium on Turbu-lence, Heat and Mass Transfer was held from April3 to 6, 2000, at the Nagoya Trade and Industry Cen-ter (Fukiage Hall), Nagoya, Japan. This triennialSymposium sought to continue the tradition estab-lished earlier in Lisbon, Portugal (1994) and Delft,The Netherlands (1997), in providing a forum forscientists and engineers from academia and indus-try who are active in the research of turbulence phe-nomena related to heat and mass transfer. The Sym-posium aimed to gather specialists in the field topresent the state-of-the-art and recent progress, toexchange ideas and to discuss current problems,future needs and prospects. Major topics and newtrends were introduced through the keynote lecturesgiven by internationally recognized authorities.

We have published the monograph which cov-ers different facets of the broad field: (1) Experi-ments and theories which elucidate the role of tur-bulence and its structure in the mechanisms of heatand mass transfer; (2) New experimental techniquesfor turbulent flow and heat/mass transport measure-ments; (3) Turbulence, heat and mass transfer in stag-nation and recirculating regions, around separationand reattachment, and in rotating flows; (4) Un-steadiness and transients in turbulent heat and masstransfer; (5) Heat transfer augmentation by turbu-lence control; (6) Turbulence in two-phase flows:effects of turbulence in particulate, droplet and filmheat and mass transfer; (7) Turbulence, heat and masstransfer in combustion and other reacting flows; (8)Direct numerical simulation, and large eddies andsubgrid-scale modelling of turbulence, heat and masstransfer; (9) Turbulence modelling for forced andnatural turbulent convection; (10) Environmentalturbulence; and (11) Turbulence, heat and mass

transfer in special applications such as automobileand aircraft.

We received more than 150 abstracts. In viewof the scheduled time allowed for presentation ofpapers in the Symposium, we reluctantly limit thenumber of papers to 117, including five keynote lec-tures. All the submitted papers were reviewed bymembers of the Scientific Advisory Committee andOrganizing Committee, as well as by some otherexperts in the field, to whom we would like to ex-press our thanks and appreciation. The selection ofthe papers was made on the basis of quality and sci-entific impact, as well as the relevance of the topicto the Symposium themes. As in the previous Sym-posia, some interesting papers had to be declined tomeet the latter criterion.

This series of Symposia has been organized incooperation with the International Centre for Heatand Mass Transfer (ICHMT). The organization ofthe Symposium and publishing of this monographwere supported by the Nagoya Institute of Technol-ogy, Nagoya City and the Ministry of Education,Science, Sports and Culture of Japan. Report on the ASME-ZSITS International Thermal Science Seminar11 – 14 June, 2000, Bled, Slovenia

The ASME-ZSITS International Thermal ScienceSeminar (ITSS), co-sponsored by the AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and bythe Association of Mechanical Engineers and Tech-nicians of Slovenia (ZSITS), was held in Bled,Slovenia, 11 – 14 June, 2000. The seminar was alsoco-sponsored by the International Institute for Re-frigeration, Commission B1 (IIR/B1), and by the In-ternational Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer(ICHMT).

The ITSS offered an international exchange ofrecent advances in experimental work, theory, de-sign, applications and technology of thermal sci-ences. About 80 scientists from 30 countries pre-sented their work in two parallel sessions, performedon the following topics: Fundamentals; Numerical;Energy Systems; Phase Change; Measurement; En-hanced Heat Transfer; Equipment; Heating, Refrig-erating & Air Conditioning; and Environmental. 10keynote lectures were contributed by acknowledgedexperts in the field (C. Amon, A. Bejan, D. Didion,D. Gorenflo, D.B.R. Kenning, J. Meyer, R. A.Nelson, P. Novak, M. Ohadi and I. Zun). During theseminar a Round Table was organized on the Ther-mal sciences aspects of renovation and developmentof the south eastern European region (moderated byE. Ganic).

The ITSS was set up to confirm that thermal sci-ence is still of vital importance in this complex world.In some circles, thermal science, particularly heattransfer, is considered “mature”. The presented pa-pers indicated that, if anything, thermal science isstill on the upswing of the classical S-shaped curve.New knowledge is constantly being generated andapplied to problems ranging from absorption refrig-

eration systems to zeotropic mixture phase change.The ITSS came at a time when electronic pro-

ceedings and virtual meetings are becoming thenorm. The whole technical publishing situation isvery fluid. The co-chairs had elected to have an ac-tual meeting with paper proceedings – prepared be-fore the meeting. To defer to the new situation adisk containing all the material in the volume wasalso available. The success of this undertaking istested by approximately 80 papers. Further, the Stan-dard Nomenclature was specified, recently adoptedby the major worldwide thermal science journals.

Many papers were concerned with experimen-tal resolution of thermal science problems. Henceit is appropriate and in keeping with our view thatthe craft of experimentation must be maintained andselected papers on experimental studies will be pub-lished in a special issue of the Experimental Ther-mal and Fluid Science journal.

Report on 8th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-8)April 2-6, 2000, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A

The 8th International Conference on Nuclear Engi-neering (ICONE-8) co-sponsored by the AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Ja-pan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) andthe Societe Francaise Energie Nuclear (SFEN) washeld on April 2-6, 2000, at Hyatt Regency Hotel inBaltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. The number of theregistered participants in this big conference totaledabout 650 as shown in TABLE 1, almost the sameas the figure registered in the previous conference,ICONE-7, held in Tokyo (656). Of this total, ~340came from the U.S.A., ~132 from Japan, ~55 fromFrance, and others from 27 countries. The confer-ence was composed of 152 technical sessions, 16plenary sessions and invited speakers’ sessions, andfive student program sessions, as shown in TABLE2. Of about 70 plenary lectures and invited speak-ers’ lectures, 12 lectures were given by Japaneseparticipants.

The opening session was held with theme of“Nuclear Energy in the New Millennium,” whichwas also the keynote theme of the conference.

During the opening session, the chairperson C.H. Poindexter, Chairman, President & CEO, Con-stellation Energy Group, U.S.A., gave the openingaddress, in which he stated that the Calvert Cliffsnuclear power station is expected to be given a re-newed operation license for the first time in theU.S.A., and such cases are expected increase fromnow on, and that the electric utility industry in theU.S.A. is trying to maintain and increase its com-petitiveness by the advantage of economies of scalethrough consolidation and alliance, and selling andbuying of power plants. From Japan, the honorarychairperson Tomono, Senior Fellow of Tokyo Elec-tric Power Co., Inc., stated that nuclear power playsa significant role in Japan as it now accounts forone-third of the total electricity generated in thecountry. Commenting on the JCO criticality acci-dent, chairperson Tomono also said that it is neces-sary for engineers engaging in the nuclear world notonly to promote advance in technology but also tokeep their responsibility and contribution to the so-ciety in mind for their challenges in the New Mil-lennium, and that it is necessary to learn and makegood use of the lessons learned from the accident.

The speakers of France, H.Machenaud, the Con-struction Manager, EdF, stated that the energy self-sufficiency of France is now recovering largely be-cause of nuclear power generation and nuclear powergeneration continues to be an important energysource in the future, that it is necessary to alwayscontinue to trace the fields of research and develop-ment, construction and operation in order to pro-mote nuclear power generation in a sound manner,and that the EPR now being jointly developed bySiemens and FRAMATOME plays an important rolein making up for the fields of inadequate research

and development, and construction in recent years.During other plenary and invited panel sessions,speakers talked about cost reduction efforts relatedto operation, maintenance and construction of powerplants, deregulation, MOX utilization, low-levelradiation, PA, etc.

During the technical sessions in ten tracks, about700 presentation were given, including 35 studentprograms, and there were active discussions aboutoperation and maintenance, equipment reliability,materials, structures, quake-proof engineering, au-thorization and licensing renewals, decommission-ing and decontamination of reactors, safety assess-ment, next-generation reactors, thermal-hydraulics,fundamental technology, fuel cycles, technical stan-dards and criteria, regulations, etc. The next con-ference, ICONE-9, is scheduled to be held on April8-12, 2001 in Nice, France.

On the threshold of the new century the Forumhas been aimed at discussion and critical evaluationof the advances in the field of heat and mass trans-fer and determination of tasks for the future.

The Forum included the Opening and ClosingPlenary Sessions, the work of 11 sections with oraland poster papers, and round tables.

Of ten plenary reports of the highest interest were“Problems of Heat and Mass Transfer in AtomicPower Engineering in the 21st Century”, Self-Or-ganization and Dynamic Chaos. Problems andTasks”, “Heat and Mass Transfer in Capillary-Po-rous Bodies (Results and Problems)”.

The Program of the Forum covered 557 sectionreports and communications, including: 87 pertain-ing to the Section “Convective Heat and Mass Trans-

fer”, 36 to “Radiative and Combined Heat Trans-fer”, 78 to “Heat Conduction and Problems of HeatExchange Optimization”, 48 to “Heat and MassTransfer in Chemically Reactive Systems”, 73 to “Heat and Mass Transfer in Two-Phase Systems (in-cluding phase changes)”, 40 to “ Heat and MassTransfer in Disperse Systems”, 34 to “ Heat andMass Transfer in Rheological Systems”, 31 to “ Heatand Mass Transfer in Capillary-Porous Bodies”, 30to “ Heat and Mass Transfer in Drying Processes”,69 to “ Heat and Mass Transfer in Power Plants”,31 to “ Heat and Mass Transfer in Chemical-Tech-nological Apparatuses”.

In the course of the Forum four round tables tookplace, namely: “Combustion and Chemical Tech-nologies in the 21st Century”, “Heat Pumps”, “Heatand Mass Transfer in Biological Systems”, “Heat/Mass Exchange and Ecology”.

Report on DROP-SURFACE INTERACTIONS, Advanced School and WorkshopCoordinated by M. Rein, DLR, Germany

Drop-Surface Interactions was the topic of anAdvanced School and a Workshop held at the In-ternational Center for Mechanical Sciences(CISM) in Udine, Italy, from July 17-21, 2000.The lectures of the course were given by well-known experts, namely, M. Lesser (Royal Insti-tute of Technology, Sweden), H.N. Oguz (TheJohns Hopkins University, USA), D. Poulikakos(ETH Zürich, Switzerland), A. Prosperetti (TheJohns Hopkins University, USA and Universityof Twente, The Netherlands), M. Rein (DLR, Ger-many) and M. Vignes-Adler (LPMDI, Universityof Marne-la-Vallée, France). The participants werepostgraduates, postdocs, mechanical and chemi-cal engineers, and material scientists of universi-ties, research institutions and industrial develop-ment departments. The Advanced School on Drop-Surface Interactions was combined with a Work-shop which was held in the late afternoons. The

workshop provided a platform for presenting anddiscussing recent results of the participants in alively environment. In this manner an excellentexchange of ideas was attained.

Practically all aspects of drop-surface interac-tions were addressed within both the course andthe workshop. Initially, a thorough overview ofboth fluid mechanical and thermodynamic phe-nomena of drops interacting with liquid and solidsurfaces was provided. Emphasis was laid on dis-tinguishing between different impact scenarios andon the conditions under which certain phenomenasuch as splashing and spreading occur. The im-portance of scaling was stressed and characteris-tic non-dimensional numbers were introduced. Inaddition to the inertia of the approaching drop andto the surface tension of the liquid, also the com-pressibility, the viscosity and interfacial phenom-ena were shown to be of great importance. Fur-

thermore, heat transfer and phase change phenom-ena were extensively discussed. The physicalbackground of these aspects were introduced andmethods for modelling drop-surface interactionsboth theoretically and numerically, were presented.In particular, the formation of shock waves bothin liquids and solids, cavitation, vorticity genera-tion, sound emission and air entrainment by im-pinging drops were covered. Furthermore, physi-cochemical aspects such as the role of surfactantsfor the wetting behavior of drops and the hyster-esis of contact angles have been treated in detail.On the thermodynamic side the dynamicLeidenfrost phenomenon, non-equilibrium condi-tions during the solidification of drops and the heatflux singularity at molten contact lines were con-sidered. Finally, an overview of numerical algo-rithms for free-surface flows was presented with

a particular emphasis on boundary integral for-mulations and front tracking methods.

CISM´s Palazzo del Torso served as an idealenvironment for both, the Advanced School andthe Workshop. Within the breaks lively discussionsamong the participants and the lecturers tookplace.The material presented in the course pro-vides a comprehensive picture of the present un-derstanding of drop-surface interactions. It will bepublished by CISM and distributed as a text bookby Springer-Verlag Wien New York.

Report on The 3rd Israeli Conference for Conveying and Handling of Particulate SolidsMay 29-June 1, 2000, Dead Sea, Israel

The conference took place at the Grand NirvanaHotel at the Dead Sea in Israel during May 29-June1, 2000 and was jointly organized with the 10th In-ternational Freight Pipeline Society Symposium. Theconference was chaired by Dr Haim Kalman andCo-chaired by Dr Avi Levy, both from the Depart-ment of Mechanical Engineering at the Ben-GurionUniversity of the Negev. They were assisted by anIsraeli based Organizing Committee representingIsraeli industry and academia and by an InternationalAdvisory Board with seventeen members from tencountries. An exhibition featuring Powder Technol-ogy instrumentation and equipment accompanied theconference. The main sponsors included the threemajor technical universities in Israel, Ben-GurionUniversity of the Negev, Technion-Israel Instituteof Technology and Tel-Aviv University, the USNational Science Foundation, five Powder Technol-ogy societies including the Powder TechnologyForum (PTF) of the AIChE and nine private corpo-rations.

The conference had more than 210 participantsfrom 21 countries. Most participants from abroadwere from Germany (19), USA (17), UK (14) andJapan (12). A total of 19 invited Plenary and Key-note lectures, 84 technical oral presentations and38 technical posters were presented during the threedays of the conference. In addition, four workshops,on several topics in the field of Powder Science andTechnology, were held during the forth day followedby an industrial tour to the Dead Sea Works, Ltd.

The proceedings of the conference were editedby Drs H. Kalman, A. Levy and M. Hubert and con-tain two volumes with about 1010 pages with 146full papers and eleven extended abstracts. Interestedpersons can obtain a copy of the proceedings or onlyindividual papers by requesting them directly from

the editor at E-mail [email protected] or byFax: (972)-7-647-2813. Selected papers from theproceedings will be published by Elsevier in a spe-cial volume.

The conference was opened by a plenary ses-sion in which Dr. Mike C. Roco, Program Directorof Particulate and Multiphase Systems at the Na-tional Science Foundation in the USA, presented athought provoking lecture on “Trends in ParticleScience and Technology@. This was followed byindustrial perspective presented by Dr. Karl V. Jacobfrom the Dow Chemical Company, President of thePowder Technology Forum of the AIChE. He spokeabout “Particle Technology Past, Present and Fu-ture: The industrial perspective”. Individual Sessionswere dedicated to all the important topics in Pow-der Science and Technology such as Powder Pro-cessing, Particle Characterization, Particle Break-age and Comminution, Mechanical and PneumaticConveying, Mixing and Segregation, Powder Stor-age, Size Enlargement and Agglomeration, SlurryTransport, Classification, Separation and Dust Con-trol, and Drying. Each topic was then covered by aninvited plenary or keynote speaker and several re-view and research papers. These topics are also re-flected in the chapters of the proceedings. There werefour parallel running sessions of 100 minutes eachduring all three days of the conference with postersessions organized during all three days.

Report on the Engineering Foundation Conference Boiling 2000:Phenomena & Emerging Applications

The United Engineering Foundation has organizedin the wonderful frame of Girdwood, Anchorage,Alaska, the fourth International Conference on Boil-ing, titled "Boiling 2000: Phenomena & EmergingApplications".

This Conference follows the first one held atSanta Barbara, USA, in March 1992 (Pool and Ex-ternal Flow Boiling), the second held at Banff,Canada, in May 1995 (Convective Flow Boiling)and the last one held at Irsee, Germany, in May 1997(Pool and Flow Boiling).

A total of 33 papers have been presented out ofthe scheduled 44, plus 7 keynote lectures, with afinal participation of about 60 people.

Although the participation has been less numer-ous than previous editions, both in papers presentedand in attendees (maybe the very long trip to thisvery far but beautiful location in Alaska has pre-vented a higher participation), the 'Boiling 2000'Conference has matched any expectations which aretypical of United Engineering Foundation Confer-ences: very specific topics, international leadingexperts attending, time available for discussion; highquality of the papers presented.

During the Conference participants had the pos-sibility to:•examine the scientific and technological state-of-the-art on pool and forced convective boiling;•discuss the recent advances in boiling phenomena(new models, recent experimental data, new corre-lations, mechanistic models, binary mixtures, etc.);•discuss the emerging applications in boiling (cool-ing of electronic components, microscale heat trans-fer, geothermal energy conversion, microgravity,fluoroinerts, etc.)•identify the phenomenological techniques to ex-trapolate the knowledge on boiling and on two-phaseflow towards new emerging applications.

Of special interest the keynote lectures, whichare briefly summarized hereunder.

Geoff Hewitt has presented, with the usualskillness, some research themes which still repre-sent challenges in boiling: he talked about entrain-ment and deposition rate in annular flow and multi-component mixture boiling.

James Klausner gave a very complete state-of-the-art on the modeling of bubble detachment fromthe heated wall and on the analysis on the forceswhich play a relevant role in the bubble growth anddetachment under various geometric and thermo-dynamic conditions.

Paolo Di Marco has presented an excellent sur-vey on pool boiling research in microgravity, show-ing also the activity of the research group (coordi-nated by Prof. Walter Grassi) at the University ofPisa, Department of Energetics; which is a fore-run-ning team in this advanced research topic.

Wataru Nakayama provided a survey of the cool-ing of electronic systems using boiling of fluids.

John Thome reported a very detailed updatingof two-phase heat transfer modelling based on flowpattern. The talk has been based on an original andeffective theoretical-experimental approach devel-oped at the Federal Polytechnic Institute ofLausanne.

Satish Kandlikar presented an updating of heresearch on subcooled boiling CHF, also on the ba-sis of what reported in the very recent Handbook ofPhase-Change: Boiling & Condensation, edited bythe speaker.

David Kenning talked on experimental methodsto get local information on bubble nucleation (tem-perature fluctuation analysis and thermal excursionsduring bubble growth and detachment, etc.)

Contributing papers presented at the Conferencehave dealt with typical problems associated with thewhole boiling process, from the onset on boiling upto the boiling crisis, and have been grouped in thefollowing sessions: evaporative heat transfer, bubblecharacteristics in nucleate boiling, pool boiling heat

industry, consulting and government from all overthe world. The conference is becoming one of the,if not the, major events in particle technology. Avery impressive job you have done!”

These are some excerpts of comments by sev-eral participants that largely represent the overallimpression: “I just want to express my sincere ap-preciation to everybody concerned for all your ef-forts in organizing such an excellent conference. Youwent to enormous trouble to ensure that everythingwas arranged superbly on both the technical andsocial sides. Although it was a huge amount of workfor you, I hope that you will keep on organizing this

series of conferences. It was one of the best-orga-nized that I have ever attended”. And “I wish to sayhow very much we enjoyed the conference at theDead Sea. It was an excellent conference and thehospitality was wonderful. Report on the 38th European Two-Phase Flow Group MeetingKarlsruhe, 29-31 May 2000

The 38th edition of the European Two-Phase FlowGroup Meeting has been organized at Karlsruhefrom May 29 to 31 by Prof. Ulrich Müller and Dr.Greet Jansenss-Maenhout, Institute für Kern-undEnergietechnik, Karlsruhe.

A total of 53 people attended the Meeting, withsome 30 papers presented. This is the standard sizeof this Meeting, which is characterized by the fol-lowing features:•informality: papers are brought in a sufficient num-ber of copies by participants at the registration, thusrepresenting the very last minute results of the re-search;•discussion: this is a very important aspect of theMeeting which is held in plenary session for all pre-sentations;•possibility to learn and redirect research: present-ing last minute results, it is possible from discus-sion with leading experts and other colleagues toget back with new information to possibly re-orientthe research program; this is usually not possible atformal Conferences where, because of the publica-tion of Proceedings, it is necessary to submit thepaper almost a year in advance.

The Meeting in Karlsruhe presented a very wellbalanced presence of people, in terms of young sci-entists and leading experts, and proved to be a verygood 'round table discussion' of works in progress,with an interesting mixing of basic background andnew enthusiasm.

The topics which papers presented have beengrouped in are: boiling, condensation, numericalsimulation, flow pattern transition, unsteady phasechange, bubbly flow.

cussion chaired by Dr. Gian Piero Celata, where thegeneral themes of the two-phase flow communityhave been debated. In particular, problems associ-ated with funding of research from the EuropeanUnion have been discussed, together with the inter-action between experimental and theoretical re-search. This latter, being characterized by the avail-ability of more and more powerful computers andlow costs of investment, is tending to deal with moreand more complex schematizations and calculationswhich require a more detailed and deepened experi-mentation for comparison and assessment. This,obviously, requires more funding and represents atechnical challenge.

The 39th Meeting of the European Two-PhaseFlow Group will be held at Aveiro, Portugal, from17 to 20 June, 2001.

During the Karlsruhe Meeting, a group of people(Besnard, Celata, Delhaye, Giot, Hewitt,Schulenberg and Sehgal) founded a new EuropeanScientific Institute, named EMSI (EuropeanMultiphase Systems Institute), which aims and ob-jectives are:

promotion and fostering, through research, dis-cussion and knowledge transfer, of multiphase sys-tems understanding for various applications;

to encourage the creation of co-operativeprojects throughout European Countries, with strongconnection with the European Union.

Report on 5TH International Symposium on Heat Transfer (ISHT)’ BEIJINGAugust 12-16, 2000, Beijing, China

The 1st and 2nd International Symposiums on HeatTransfer’ Beijing were held in 1985 and 1988. TheInternational Scientific Committee then decided tohold the symposiums termly once every four years.The 3rd, 4th and 5th symposiums were also organizedby Institute for Thermal Science and Engineering,Tsinghua University, and presided by Professor B.X.Wang in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The proceedings ofthe 1st and 2nd symposiums were published as HeatTransfer Science and Technology series by Hemi-sphere Publishing Corporation and the followingones published by Higher Education Press, Beijing.The series of ISHT’ Beijing provided a valuableforum for the international exchange of informationon new ideas, new methods and new developmentsin the field of heat transfer.

As we begin the new millenium, the rapid ad-vances in processing techniques, the rapid accumu-lation of new knowledge, the impressive improve-ments in research capabilities and the importanceof environmental factors have provided many op-portunities for the research community as they facethe challenges of the 21st century. It would be muchvaluable to have a new forum for exchanging infor-mation.

The 5th symposium, with the permission of Min-

istry of Education (MOE) and the financial support-ing of NSF of China, was held as scheduled duringAugust 12-16, 2000, at Xijiao Hotel in Beijing,where many universities and institutes such asTsinghua University, Peking University and ChineseAcademy of Sciences are located nearby. The pro-ceedings included 8 invited keynotes and 125 gen-eral papers carefully selected from 152 submittedabstracts. The attendants came from 13 countries,namely Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Ja-pan, Korea, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden,UK and USA as well as China, mostly from otherthan the mainland of China. Most papers are in-volved in the fundamentals on two-phase flow, flowboiling and condensation, fluid flow and heat trans-fer in porous media, and associated application de-velopments. Measuring and analyzing methods forheat transfer in microscale are also presented in thissymposium.

Report on 8th International Conference on PRESSURE SURGESSafe Design and Operation of Industrial Pipe Systems

The 8th Conference in the Pressure Surges series,Safe Design and Operation of Industrial Pipe Sys-tems , was held in The Hague, The Netherlands. Inspite of a very full programme, with over 40 inter-national presentations, 3 new sessions were success-fully introduced to the programme.

The first was a panel session in which severalauthors were given just 5 minutes in which to presenttheir findings, all in a related field, followed by aquestion and answer session. Congratulations werein order to the speakers who not only managed toput across their message succinctly but kept to time.

The second new feature allowed delegates theopportunity to present ‘Work in Progress’. This in-troduced up to the minute data from on-going workwhich normally would not be included in theprogramme. Several delegates took the opportu-nity to present their findings.

The third innovation was an Open DiscussionForum where three controversial questions wereposed to the audience prior to the conference. BryanKarney from the University of Toronto led this lively

session in a very able and entertaining manner.A number of keynote speeches were given dur-

ing the 2½ day conference. Fred Locher of BechtelCorporation in the USA began the proceedings withhis speech entitled ‘Caution: Pressure Surges in Pro-cess and Industrial Systems May be Fatal’. Thisproved to be a very interesting and thought provok-ing presentation to open the Conference. Other key-note speeches given were: ‘Rapid Expulsion of En-trapped Air Through an Orifice’ by Sam Martin ofGeorgia Institute of Technology; ‘Celebrations andChallenges – Waterhammer at the Start of the 20thand 21st Centuries’ by Sandy Anderson, Universityof Newcastle upon Tyne; ‘The Simulation of TimeDependent Flows Within Building Utility ServicesSystems’ by John Swaffield, Heriot-Watt Univer-sity, ‘Advances in Unsteady Friction Modelling inTransient Pipe Flow’ by Angus Simpson, Univer-sity of Adelaide and ‘FSI Research in The Nether-lands’ by Arris Tijsseling of Eindhoven Universityof Technology.

University of Dresden gave a moving speech in cel-ebration of the life of Dr Harald Graze, formerly ofthe University of Melbourne. Dr Graze was wellknown and respected in the field of Surge Controland in particular by regular attendees of thisConfererence and will be sorely missed.

To complement the Technical sessions, the del-egates were able to enjoy some relaxation time, anopportunity to renew friendships and make new onesat the drinks reception (sponsored by GoodwinsInternational Limited) and at the conference dinner.

The highlight of the latter was the presentation oflight-hearted conference ‘awards’ after the meal.

The planning of the 9th Conference will soonbe underway and potential delegates and presentersshould contact BHR Group to ensure they receiveinformation in due course.

Report on the 2nd Japanese-European Two-Phase Flow Group MeetingSeptember 25-29, 2000, Tsukuba, Japan

The Second Japanese-European Two-Phase FlowGroup Meeting was held in Tsukuba, Japan, twoyears after the first meeting in Portoroz, Slovenia.The meeting attracted over 70 participants from 13different countries. The main aim of the meetingwas to promote the information exchange and/orcollaboration between European Two-Phase FlowGroup and Japanese two-phase flow scientists andengineers. The total number of invited contributionswas 51, 17 from Europe. Among those, there were5 joint European-Japanese or Japanese Europeanpapers. The following countries formally partici-pated at the Tsukuba Meeting: Austria, Czech Re-public, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal,Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and UK. The scien-tific content of the meeting was divided in the fol-lowing topics: Boiling and Heat Transfer (10 pa-pers), Measurement (10), Bubble and TurbulentDiffusion (3), Numerical Simulation (9), Flow Pat-tern (3), Dispersed Flow (8), Stratified Flow (2),Control and Environment (3) and Applications (3).The titles of papers suggest that two-phase flow re-search grows in new directions. The trends are re-markable in the fields of measurement, simulationand application. The abstract volume was distrib-uted in the meeting but the proceedings of the meet-ing are printed on CD-ROM after the meeting. Thetotal number of participants and contributions in-creased and the meeting was active and fruitful.Moreover, the useful interchange in various senseswas promoted during the meeting.

As the Chairman of ISTP-12, I am delighted to writethis Conference report.

13 keynote papers and nearly 200 technical pa-pers (including open forum presentations) from over35 countries contributed to this Symposium. Per-sonally, I feel that this Symposium was a great suc-cess, as it brought together researchers from differ-ent backgrounds and different countries, all of whomhave a common interest in transport phenomena.

I am confident that all keynote speakers andparticipants found this Symposium a very reward-ing experience from a technical and a social stand-point, and benefited from the exchange of ideas,information, problems and solutions with technicalexperts. The luncheons, banquet, receptions andother exciting social events provided an ample op-portunity to interact with the many diverse interna-tional attendees. I am also extremely happy that Ihad an opportunity to show you cordial Turkish hos-pitality and the stunning natural beauty in Istanbul.

As we are all aware, the efforts required in orga-nizing and holding such a Symposium are exten-sive. We put a tremendous amount of efforts to real-ize such a great Symposium. Therefore, I like tohighlight the following:

First, I would like to take this opportunity toexpress my sincere appreciation to Professor We-Jei Yang, President of the Pacific Center of Ther-mal Fluids-Engineering, and its executive boardmembers for giving me this chance to organize theISTP-12 first time in Europe, in Istanbul. Second, Igreatly appreciate our Organizing Committee Chair-man Dr. Ferhat Yardim’s excellent job in makinglocal preparations and arrangements under the tech-nical guidance of our Technical Chairmen, Profes-

sors Ekrem Ekinci and Hasancan Okutan whose theirefforts are higly appreciated. Third, I am very muchgrateful to Profesor Paul Marto for organizing sucha successfull Open Forum with a fruitful and friendlyatmosphere. Fourth, my sincere thanks go to ourOrganizing Committee Members for their help andassistance.
