8 things students should know

Let’s face it: We won’t be living with ourparents forever. In fact, most of us cringe atthe idea and will be packing our bags assoon as we graduate. But what moststudents don’t realize is that independencecomes with a price: We’ll have to doeverything ourselves. And that meanseverything. I have compiled a list of the topeight things every student should learn howto do before they move out and ventureinto the real world, things that you will needto know when your parents aren’t there tocoddle your every need.1: Cooking - You may be able to live a life ofRamen noodles and soda in college, but itprobably isn’t the healthiest option. Youshould learn how to cook healthy deliciousmeals now. The next time you see one ofyour parents cooking, ask to help them. They’ll be more than happy to teach you.You should also compile a book of yourfavorite recipes and learn how to makethem. You and your stomach will thank youfor it later.2: Budgeting money - When the parentsare away, there are bills to pay. Learn nowapproximately how much an apartment coststo rent in college, along with food, water, electric, phone, and other expenses. Usethese numbers to determine what kind ofjob you will need to get and how much youwould be able to spend for enjoyment. Ifyou have a part-time job now, put a certainpercentage (I’d say at least 10 percent) ofyour paychecks into savings. You’ll never

know when an emergency will pop up. Ifyou are a habitual spender, try to break thehabit now. Money is always tight when youare a first-time college student, and now isthe time to learn when it’s okay to spendand when it’s not.3: Budgeting time – Hopefully, if you aredoing extracurricular activities or have a job, this should already be an acquired skill. Youneed to know how to spend your timestudying, at work, at sports, or during freetime. Get out of the habit of procrastinatingand learn to spend your free time wisely. Itwill only get worse when you move out ofthe house.4: Respect – If the students here treatedtheir future employers the way I’ve seenmost of them treat their teachers, they wouldprobably not have their job for very long. Itreally won’t kill you to say ‘please’ or ‘thankyou,’ or ‘yes sir.’ Learn that your boss isyour boss, and that he has experience andpower over you. Learn how to respect notjust them, but everyone around you, andyou will be a much more likeable person. Ipromise.5: Computer skills – Most of us alreadyknow how to use Microsoft Word andsearch engines on the Internet. But try tolearn how to use programs like MicrosoftExcel, Adobe Acrobat, and MicrosoftPowerPoint that most offices use andrequire of an employee. You also might needto refine your typing skills, if you feel likethey aren’t exactly up to snuff.6: Household chores – Nobody enjoysthem, but they have to get done. If you don’t

know already, learn how to clean the dishes, wash a toilet, and vacuum a floor.Cleanliness is happiness, and you and yourfuture roommates will appreciate a cleandorm or apartment. If you aren’t sure howto clean, ask your parents. Just a warning, though, as they might just faint if you askto help around the house.7: Organization - A clean and unclutteredhouse means more than just clean dishes. You’ll need somewhere to put those dishes.Learning organization skills is a must forwhen you have your own place. Buycabinets and cubbies and make sureeverything has a place. Remember that dormrooms are very small, so you will need anorganized place to put all your stuff.8: Laundry – I originally wasn’t going toinclude this, but I was surprised by howmany students in this school still don’tknow how to do their own laundry. Washingyour own clothes is simple: just throw somedetergent in the washer, and add theclothes. For colored clothes, use the warm/cold water option, and for whites, add somebleach and use hot/cold water. Simple asthat. To dry, just stick them in the dryer, select the options you want, and press “on.”Ask your parents if you have anyquestions.

This November, a very important issue thatstands aside from the national election isthe levy for the Loveland City SchoolDistrict. This levy will not raise taxes. Itspurpose is to keep our school one ofexcellence. It makes you wonder, whywouldn’t you vote YES? Sure, many Loveland students, alongwith myself, have noticed some of ourschool’s questionable spending in the past. The need for plasma screen televisions inthe cafeteria and personalized “Loveland”soap and paper towel dispensers is beyondme. Although, most do not understand thatour budget is divided, so that some moneycan only be spent in certain areas, such asthose accessories. Changes have alreadytaken place in our district that are affectingall of us. This funding is a vital part toencouraging growth in education andavoiding the opposite. Changes already taking place relating tostudents are everywhere. Classroom sizeshave increased from around twenty to thirtystudents in each class. This gives lesspersonal attention to the students who needit, and they often find themselves withunanswered questions. This situation willonly get worse, because if the levy fails, nonew teachers can be hired. Classes willcontinue to be cut in our curriculum. Bio-med, Engineering Drawing and several othercourses have already been dropped. The schedule will drastically change aswell. We have already noticed a split thirdand fourth block, which is a preview of the

Vote yes!By Natalie Siddique

Well, Loveland High School, a lot ofthings have changed this year due to thefailure of the levy. One, for an example, isthe new bell schedule. I assume that duringschedule pick-up, many of you leaned yourhead to the side saying, “What the heck isgoing on? What is with this 3a and 4bstuff?” Well, this crazy bell schedule is dueto the levy not passing. This new bellschedule, as it seems to be making ourschool days much crazier, is actuallyhelping us. Since the levy failed, some ofthe teachers that left, due to the budgetcut, were not replaced. This actionincreased the class sizes. To relieve thelarge class sizes, the school created more45-minute classes. Some students have atotal of six classes in one semester. Talkabout workload. Now we all know what has beenbugging us at the end of the school day.Why in the world do we have to leave at2:22 p.m. and not just 2:20 p.m.? Well, here’sthe answer. In accordance to the 45-minuteclasses, some students have a two-minutemove from 4A to 4B. This two-minute moveconflicts with the total number of hours astudent has to be in school. Students haveto leave at 2:22 p.m. because the 2 minutemove has to be made up with two-minutesat the end of the day. This may sound really confusing rightnow, but in the end it is great to have smallerclass sizes, even though it stinks havingto wait till 2:22 p.m. We, as a school, canget through this predicament. On thebright side, seniors get to leave at 2:15 p.m.on Fridays! Sorry, underclassmen.

Crazy bellschedule

elimination of block scheduling. Instead oftwo sets of classes each semester, whereyou can get courses out of the way withless homework every night, we could haveseven classes every single day. I personallywouldn’t want that much of a course load.As of now, Loveland High School hasalready eliminated practically all field trips, including the Spanish III field trip. This takesthe fun out of experiencing the subject youare learning first hand. With a failing levy, there will be absolutely none. Prices for parking passes and other areashave been raised already. This year parkingpasses cost us $100 instead of $40. Athleticfees went from $25 to $100, and $150 forfootball. This discourages some athletesfrom playing because of the expense. Notonly the price to play, but the entry ticketsto events have gone up one dollar, even forstudent tickets. If the levy does not pass, prices could increase by more, and evensports programs could be cut fromLoveland. Extra activities, such as dances, will be affected. “Dances, especially promticket prices, will skyrocket,” claims studentcouncil member Emilee Kraus. Clearly, this levy could make a tremendousimpact on our school. We need this to passto avoid Loveland City Schools from fallingapart. As a junior, with just one more yearhere, I do not want our high school todrastically change for the worst. So to avoidthese changes, it’s important for everyoneto vote. For those of you that can, get outand vote YES on November 4th, andencourage your family and our communityto do the same.

Power outage: DOur world was rocked by a wind storm, and for many citizens the power was outand survival in the dark began.

No Homecoming parade:FThe Homecoming parade was cancelledthis year by the city of Loveland due tothe wind storm. Not only is this a hugesetback for Homecoming tradition, it hasdemoralized our school. THANKS, IKE!

Football vs. Kings: A+Loveland beat Kings for the first timesince 2000. The tigers scored 20 whichwon over Kings 13 points. GO TIGERS!

2:22 dismissal: C A 2:22 dismissal? Are those two minutesreally necessary? Okay, apparently theyare. Rats.

So you’re figuring out what to wear toschool. According to the weatherman, it’sgoing to be a beautiful day with a higharound eighty. You’ve got shorts andmini-skirts laid out, with cute graphic teesand flip-flops— and then it hits you. The“four inches above the knee” rule. Youcringe. There goes your adorable outfit. You know it isn’t fair, but you’ve got todeal with it. The school’s dress codehaunts you in your head. No tank-tops,no shorts or mini-skirts that fit you at justthe right spot. It doesn’t matter if you’retall and four inches above the knee looksridiculous. It feels like the school has putyou in a spot it has put all the rest of thegirls of the high school in. Wear a dress, skirt, or pair of shorts that you may thinkfit you well, and you risk being sent tothe office for violating the dress code. You risk being pulled out of class andtaken away from your education forsomething you choose to wear, even ifthe other students aren’t distracted by it.On the other hand, you may go unseenby luck. Either way you’re taking a riskwhen you really shouldn’t have to worryabout this at all, but should instead beworrying about your grades andeducation. While some students get away

with what they wear, others get sent to theoffice, for example- my best friend, Cara. Just the other day I walked into my 3B classto be told by Mr. Schmidt to go down to theattendance office with my car keys. I thought,Oh my gosh they’re taking my parking passaway! I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. So I went up the stairs and turned the cornerto find my best friend in the attendance office, reflecting the same worried look that was onmy face. She told me that if I didn’t have a pairof pants in my car, she would have to talk tothe principal, call her dad, and stay in the officethe rest of the day. The problem? Her shortswere too short. I was absolutely infuriated.Cara and I walked out to my car, I found a pairof sport shorts, and fifteen minutes into block3B, we finally got back to class. I understand that we can’t have studentswalking around the school with certain curveshanging or popping out, but I think that beingpulled out of class or lunch is, in a way, moredistracting, a waste of time, and taking awayfrom our education. Most students here at LHSbelieve that fashion should be the students’own affair. We are a public school, andgenerally public schools are less restrictingwith their dress codes. I understand the needfor restrictions and rules, but the main problemhere is the consistency at which these rulesare being enforced. The four inches above theknee rule is almost impossible to follow and

find within today’s selection of teenageclothing stores. This is easily seen bygoing out and looking through the racksof shorts and minis. It’s hard enough tofind shorts that don’t have an inseam ofonly one inch. If the school is going togive us the option to wear mini-skirts,shorts, and dresses, they need to see thata four-inches-above-the-knee restrictionis a difficult rule to go by. Students willwear mini-skirts shorter than this if theywant to, because you have given them theoption to wear mini-skirts. And finally, why, through confusion of rules andprinciples, should we be in trouble forloosely following a rule that is not solid tobegin with? There are certain things we can do toenforce the rules in a clearer way. Onesuggestion may be to check the studentsin the morning as they come into theschool, and if the students easily make itthrough the door in the morning, they donot have to risk being pulled out of classin the middle of the day. Taking steps likethese would make the dress code simplerto follow in the future, but for now manyof us are wondering why the dress codehasn’t gotten the little makeover that ittruly needs.

Gas prices are soaring, unemployment is rising, and college tuition is skyrocketing. 75 percent ofour nation is distraught by the status quo. However, John McCain stated in several of hisspeeches that the “fundamentals of our economyare strong.” His idea of prosperity is derivedfrom giving to the wealthy and hoping that theprosperity will trickle down to the middle class

and the poor. However, thismentality has beentested and failed

over the past eight years throughout the Bushadministration. The very rich have become richerand the middle class and poor have becomepoorer. Instead of focusing on the nationaleconomy, Bush spent trillions of dollars on thewar in Iraq, which is a big reason why our nationis $9.6 trillion in deficit, almost double what it wasonly a decade ago. And where is this moneygoing to come from? Our pockets. John McCainhas a record of voting 90% the same as GeorgeW. Bush. This is a very unpromising numberconsidering the unpopularity of our president’sdecisions. We need a president who will work forthe American people rather than for specialinterests and Barack Obama is just the man forthe job. He has always stayed true to the issues thatreally mattered to him and to this nation. He hasclear plans on how he is going to end the war inIraq and use our tax money to implement morejobs into the economy. His healthcare plan isalso very precise, explaining in detail how he willmake healthcare accessible to the 47 million whoare currently without. Another substantial issuetoday is the corruption of big business. McCainhas always supported de-regulation for bigbusinesses while recently, the Federal Reservegave AIG an $84 billion loan to prevent thecompany from going bankrupt. Our economy is

in dire need for some governmentintervention in our financial institutions andObama supports the action. On the otherhand, in his platform, McCain has beenstraddling the fence on this issue becausehe realizes that he was initially wrong inopposing interventions in the market.Obama has hit the bull’s eye on addressingthe problems and concerns of the commoncitizens such as jobs, healthcare, and houseforeclosures, and has presented each issuewith a specific plan of action. While the true views and positions ofMcCain’s running mate remain unknowndue to restricted talks with the media,“Thanks but no thanks on that bridge tonowhere” is Sarah Palin’s big campaign linethat won McCain several supporters. However, her statement is rather incomplete. What should follow is, “But I’ll still takehalf of the funds,” which is exactly whatshe did after she actually agreed on buildingthe bridge that ended up being turned downby the Congress. While Palin is a superstaron the rise for the GOP ticket, she might beput in a position that may leave her a heartbeat away from the presidency while shelacks the immense qualifications a vicepresident should possess. In thatsituation, can you see her negotiating globalissues with the world’s leading superpowers? Barack Obama is a man who began hiscampaign as an underdog candidate.Through strategic organizational skills, eloquent speaking, and genius ideas, heworked his way up the being the democraticnominee and has the vision to move thiscountry forward. On Nov. 4, I believe thatour country will see a much more promisingfuture for our generation with Barack Obamaas president of the United States.

This means that wemust stay in Iraq until the job is done.If we pull out now, then we wouldlose the war. America has never losta war. McCain hates war, but he wantsto put the country first before himself.McCain wants to preserve ournation’s freedom and protect ourcountry from future terrorist attacks. Even though McCainunexpectedly chose Governor SarahPalin as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, she shouldnot be underestimated. She hasserved on her city council; waselected mayor of her hometown, wasappointed ethics commissioner andchairman of the Alaska Oil and GasConservation Commission, and waselected governor of Alaska. McCainmay have made a wise choice tochoose Palin. In conclusion, I must say that Ihave not bashed Senator Obama orDemocrats in general. I have chosennot to make up stupid excuses tosupport my party. Incidences suchas creating lies about McCain andSarah Palin are unethical anddisrespectful towards what “to be anAmerican” really means. Come onAmerica! Do you really think that thepregnancy of Palin’s daughteraffects the way this government willbe run? Make the right choice andsupport John McCain, the nextpresident of the United States ofAmerica. NOBAMA!!!!!

McCain for President! As fellowAmericans, we must elect the next presidentof the United States of America on Nov. 4,2008. We have the obligation to elect aleader, a person with experience, and aperson that serves his/her country, not justhis/her party. Not everyone at LovelandHigh School will get the chance to vote onNov. 4. I, myself, will not get the chance toelect the next president, but I do have theright to support anyone who runs. Thenext president of the United States ofAmerica, in my opinion, should be JohnMcCain. McCain is the leader that we need inthis country. He is the leader that will bringsuccess. Many of you may think thatMcCain will just follow the footsteps ofPresident Bush, but actually he hasadmitted that this country needs to bereformed and reinvented. McCain has the

right leadershipskills, the rightexperience, andabove all, the

right dedication. While a soldier in the Vietnam War,McCain was taken prisoner by the NorthVietnamese. McCain remained a prisonerfor five years. When the North Vietnameseoffered him early release, he denied theoffer because other POWs before him werenot offered early release. McCain’sdecision exemplified true dedication andhonor to his country. McCain has set goals such as stoppinguncontrolled government spending, gaining independence from foreignsources of oil, lowering health care costsby putting the choice of health care into

There are many legends that maycome to mind when hearing the nameMichael. You might think of the singinglegend Michael Jackson, or maybe thebasketball legend Michael Jordan. Fordecades, these were the most commonlegends thought of when hearing thename, but now it seems that whenhearing this name, more and more of usare beginning to think of that six-foot,four-inch hero. Yes, the man that comesto mind is the U.S. Olympian andswimming god, Michael Phelps. Phelps was born on June 30, 1985, andby the time he was 10 years old it wasobvious that he had a God-given talent. It was at this time that he set his firstnational record. Five years later, he hadqualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics.Although this was a greataccomplishment, he was not able to bringhome any medals. In 2004, he attendedthe Summer Olympics and brought homesix gold medals and two bronze. Whilethis was the best Phelps had ever done,it wasn’t until the 2008 Summer Olympicsin Beijing when he started making history. It was here that Phelps did the

unimaginable. Breaking Mark Spitz’s 1972record, Phelps raked in eight gold medals. While doing this, he managed to break sevenworld records and one Olympic record. Of course, America is falling in love withhis work ethic and his inspirationalperformances, but even more people arefalling in love with his good heart and his“All-American boy” persona. After winningeight gold medals, Speedo gave Phelps anendorsement of $1 million. Instead ofspending this money selfishly, Phelpscreated a foundation for young swimmersto help promote water safety and help thembecome better swimmers. This foundationis called the Michael Phelps Foundation, and after donating most of his endorsementmoney, Speedo decided to help out anddonate an additional $200,000 to this cause.Phelps is also involved with the MADDfoundation and speaks to high schoolsabout drinking and driving. Whether he is competing in Olympics orhelping local children with their swimming,he continues to grab the hearts of peopleacross America. While it seems that thereis not much more this inspirational athletecould accomplish, there is no doubt thatthis is only the beginning of the story forthis chivalrous American swimmer, MichaelFred Phelps.

Last season the New England Patriotsfinished the regular season with a perfect16-0 record. It was the greatest regularseason in NFL history. They seemed tobe a shoo-in for a Super Bowlchampionship. Then a funny thinghappened when they reached the SuperBowl. They got beat by the New YorkGiants, and the Patriots, dream ofbecoming the best team in NFL historycame crashing to earth. The Patriots entered the 2008 seasononce again as one of the Super Bowlfavorites. They again had their eyes seton a perfect season. That all changed inthe first quarter of the opening game ofthe season. The Patriots were hosting theKansas City Chiefs. Patriots Pro-Bowlquarterback Tom Brady dropped back topass. As Brady released the ball, intendedfor Randy Moss, Chiefs safety BernardPollard reached out to tackle Brady.Pollard was on the ground and he grabbedBrady’s leg in an attempt to tackle him. Asa result, Brady’s knee buckled, causinghim to tear his anterior cruciate ligamentand medial collateral ligament.

Brady will be out for the season. Sincecoming in for Drew Bledsoe in the 2001season, Brady has been the on field leaderof the Patriots’ dynasty. He is a three-timeSuper Bowl champion and a two-time SuperBowl MVP. Brady has also been a four-timetime Pro-Bowl selection and the NFL MVP in2007. The man who has the unenviable taskof taking over for Brady is Matt Cassel. Before starting in place of Brady in WeekTwo, Cassel had not started a football gameat any level since 1999. In that year he startedfor Chatsworth High School in California. Incollege he went to the University of SouthernCalifornia, where he was the backup behindCarson Palmer and Matt Leinart. With Brady out the Patriots do not seemto be as strong of a team. This opens thedoor for a number of teams to possiblybecome AFC Champions and make the SuperBowl. Of course, some traditional divisionalpowers are expected to be right therechallenging them for the Super Bowl spot. The Brady injury opens the door forIndianapolis, Pittsburgh, and San Diego tomake a run at the playoffs. The New YorkJets will be keen to take that run with theirnew quarterback, Brett Favre. Also, Buffalowill be looking to challenge in a suddenlywide-open AFC East division.

Sean Flaherty graduated this past Spring. He received a scholarship to play footballat Boston College. He is a very talentedplayer and is exciting to watch. But, thetransition from high school to collegewasn’t easy.

What’s the biggest difference betweencollege football and high school football? The amount of time we spendconditioning. We spend a lot more timepreparing for the season.

How’s the conditioning different? We wake up much earlier, at around 5:15in the morning. We walk for a half an hour.

Are the coaches more intense?Yes. There are a lot more meetings.

How are the games different? The night before games, we stay at TheRitz. There are about 45,000 more fans atour games.

What do you miss most about high schoolfootball?A lot of things. It was much more relaxedand we had better relationships with thecoaches.

As many of us have read at some pointin our lives, Harry Potter receives theincredible invisibility cloak while at themagical school of Hogwarts. We read whatJ.K. Unbelievable asit may seem, invisibility cloaksare real. Althoughthe cloak hasn’tbeen completelyp e r f e c t e d ,scientists aregetting closer andcloser every dayto this amazingfeat. The secret toinvisibility isnewly discoveredmetamater ia l s .These so-calledmetamaterials are almost like microscopicmirrors that bend light backwards. Basically, when looking at an object covered in aninvisibility cloak, the light from the oppositeside is reflected around the object and then

to your eyes, similar to how water flowsaround a boulder. However, this new technology hasmany uses other than making objectsinvisible. “[The studies] are about theability to engineer these material propertiesthat never exist in nature. With that abilityone can do many things, and cloaking isonly one of them,” said Xiang Zhang ofthe University of California, Berkely toNational Geographic. Other uses includethe ability to boost the power of antennasand microchips. Also, metamaterials may

Have you ever heard of face-recognitionsoftware? What about smile recognition? That’s right, smile-recognition software. This is Sony’s brand-new softwareintroduced to the camera industry. Thissoftware is very similar to face recognition, where it recognizes the face and makes itclearer; however, this new smile recognitionrecognizes smiles. This softwareautomatically takes the picture when it seesa smile. So no more deleting pictures with

no smiles, because all your pictures willhave bright shining smiles, right? Wrong. This software also has a sensitivity setting,so you can set it to the low setting and itwon’t take a picture unless it detects a bigsmile. However, you can set the sensitivityhigh and it will take a picture for somethinglike a non-hostile smirk. All in all, this newsoftware is easy to use and adaptive tothe kind of smile you are looking for. So ifthis new software is interesting to you,

Women complaining that their menhave roaming eyes may be surprised tolearn that these men simply can’t helpthemselves. A man’s willingness to committo a relationship may just be genetic. According to a new study by theKarolinska Institute in Stockholm, acertain type of gene in a male can helpdetermine if he’s husband material. “Our main finding was an associationbetween a variant of the vasopressinreceptor gene and how strong bonds men

This past summer, two Lovelandstudents, Trent Compton, a senior, andAnna Eltringham, a sophomore, went toNamibia, a small country on the south-western coast of Africa. They and six othertravelers were from around the area and allbelong to Epiphany United MethodistChurch. A woman came into the church andshowed a presentation on the Children ofZion Orphanage, a small orphanage of 55kids from infancy to 18, looking for a littlehelp. Anna, saying that she “always wantedto help those in poverty,” signed up alongwith Trent. The two week trip started the first day ofsummer. After a one hour flight to Atlanta, two separate eight hour flights toJohannesburg, South Africa, another onehour flight to Zambia, and finally a threehour car ride to the orphanage in Namibia, they were finally there. Did you get all that? The days were filled with different eventslike working in a feeding center, teachingthe kids, and playing with them. “We did alot of odd jobs; we even helped build aroad,” Trent said. But the thing they did themost was just spend time with the kids. Each student had a favorite child fromthe orphanage. Trent’s was a young boynamed Djolo; he played basketball andguitar with Trent. With a total of threeguitars at the orphanage, Trent and Djolowere able “to jam with each other,” Trent

Trent mentioned a young boynamed Goty who told a lot of jokes and hada high-pitched laugh. Trent said, “He justhad a strong personality.” When askedabout a memorable child at the orphanage,Anna replied “Jennifer, I remember Jenniferreally well, she followed me around everywhere I went.” The trip wasn’t just working with theorphanage; the travelers also got to go on

The day consisted of seeing elephants, giraffes, monkeys, zebras, “basicallyanything but lions,” Trent said. Story of Sarah Palin

By Chelsey SaatkampEditor-in-Chief

Over Labor Day weekend 2008,Republican presidential candidate, JohnMcCain, went public with his official runningmate for the upcoming election. From thenorth-western land of the country, AlaskanGovernor, Sarah Palin, became the pick forthe Republican Party. Being a young female, many people believe McCain “hit the nailon the head” with this choice by pleasingall his audiences. However, many worry shelacks experience and skill. Before her big break, Palin was thegovernor of Alaska since November 2006.Prior to that she was served on council forWasilla, Alaska and later became the mayorof the city for 6 years. Although the yearsshe spent in office do add up, many believethe positions she held were insignificant incomparison to the big job she was selectedfor- Vice President of the United States. Eventhough there is a so called learning curvethat comes with the job, Palin did not seemto possess enough experience with foreignpolicy and higher offices in general. On top of this slight dilemma, everyonealready knows about her teen daughter’s

pregnancy. It seems hard to hold this againsther; nevertheless, along with her own 7month- old with Down syndrome, she couldbe very busy with her home and family life. Not a very big deal for the usual middleaged mother, but a bit of a problem whenyou hold the vice presidency in your hands. It is not fair to judge Palin for things outof her power; she almost seems to haveunfortunate luck. On the other hand, manybelieve if she had trouble controlling herdaughter’s actions, she will have troublewith the assistance of running a nation.Perhaps that’s an unfair, yet accuratestatement. But in the steps she took to redeemherself, she was convincing, confident andstrong; her Sept. 3rd acceptance speechproved that. According to the media, SarahPalin gave a marvelous speech at the 2008Republican National Convention, whichmost likely gained her respect and faith fromher supporters. Even if you are not a fan ofthe Alaska governor and do not intend togive her party your vote this November, youshould respect the way she turned aroundan unfortunate situation.

Welcome back, students! Classes thisyear are in full force, and many of us arealready cramming in our homework and last-minute study sessions. One new classoffered this year is Chinese I. It is taught byMrs. Hou, a visiting teacher at LHS throughfunding by the College Board. When askedabout her experiences here so far, shereplied, “I like this school very much. Thereis a very good atmosphere and the teachersand students are great.” Mrs. Hou was born and raised in China. She taught English there and moved to

America this past summer. With 14 years ofteaching experience, she is a very qualifiedteacher. Currently, about 40 students are enrolledin Chinese I, the only class offered at thistime. Next semester, Chinese II will beoffered as an option for those alreadyenrolled in Chinese I. Everyone involvedin Chinese loves it. Forrest Behne says, “It’sa lot of fun. I love it.” Curious if the two or three years ofSpanish or French that you’ve already takenwill benefit you in Chinese? Nope! Whenasked about the relation between Europeanlanguages and Chinese, Mrs. Hou

confirmed that there is no correlation.Chinese is a language of its own. So nomatter how good or bad one is at otherlanguages, Chinese will be like starting fromscratch. The purpose of offering Chinese I is sothat students can become more connectedto Chinese culture and language. Games areplayed in class, and students even learnhow to use chopsticks. Mrs. Hou hopes thather students will be able to interact easilywith the Chinese if they ever go to thecountry, either for business or pleasure. Soif you’re looking for a new and exciting classin the future, Chinese may be for you!

The Dark Knight: This movie isobviously the sweetest movie of thesummer. The Dark Knight is worth seeingjust for Heath Ledger’s portrayal of theJoker. Anyone would love him licking hisred crusted makeup like a milk addled kitten.Christian Bale brings his “A” game as theCaped Crusader. Christopher Nolan (thedirector), holds nothing back on this one, flipping an entire semi truck in one scene, following up his work on Batman Beginstremendously. Although it definitely flirtswith an “R” rating (the pencil trick), thismovie is great for every one. If you haven’tseen it, SHAME ON YOU!

Tropic Thunder- Ben Stiller is a champ. The last movie he wrote and directed wasZoolander, which was a modern classic. Hefollows up tremendously with TropicThunder, a satire of show business. JackBlack and Robert Downey Jr. are hilarious,Black as the comedian who makes “fartmovies” and Downey Jr. as theoverachieving, overacting, over-the-topactor who “doesn’t leave character until theDVD commentary.” Make sure to watch forTom Cruise as the fat-suit wearing, foul-mouthed studio head; it’ll take you a coupleseconds but you’ll see it’s Tom Cruiseunderneath. Throw Steve Coogan in as thenew director and you’ll find that this movieis awesome.

Pineapple Express- Everyone knows thetune to the song from the trailer of this film.(For those that don’t know the name, it’scalled “Paper Planes” by M.I.A.) But evenwithout a song with the best-used soundeffects ever, Pineapple Express is fantastic.Seth Rogen, post-Knocked Up andSuperbad, brings his offbeat humor back. The whiny rich kid from the Spider-Manmovies, James Franco, appears as well, andyou find yourself actually liking him, asopposed to Spider-Man. Together the twoteam up to find a bad man, (Gary Cole). Throwin Danny McBride as Red, Franco’s andRogen’s friend in the film, and one hashilarity.

lron Man- Okay, okay, so it came out inMay, but some people went and saw it overthe summer. Robert Downey Jr. is back, playing Tony Stark, the billionaire weaponsdesigner. After being kidnapped by a groupof terrorists he builds himself a suit to breakout of his captivity. You all know the storyline, but this movie is great. Jon Favreau isthe returning director which works great andhe even stars as Stark’s driver. Marvel

Comics has finally gotten their own studioand is releasing its own movies the way itwants to. Iron Man was the first, the secondwas The Incredible Hulk.

The Incredible Hulk- Remember back toa time when Eric Bana played TheIncredible Hulk in probably the worst

s u p e r h e r omovie sinceG e o r g eC l o o n e y ’ sBatman andRobin? Well,don’t worry,Fight Clubveteran EdwardNorton is onboard playingthe role of BruceBanner. It’s nota sequel to the

previous Hulk movie; it is a Hulk movie.Just act like the first one never happened. The movie doesn’t show the transformationinto the green giant for at least 40 minutesbut when it does it’s well worth the wait. The final battle between two gamma-radiated hulks is awesome just to observe. You’ll love it any time Bruce turns into theHulk, and it’ll make you wish you could tellsomeone “you wouldn’t like me when I’mangry.”

Hancock- Alright, this wasn’t one of themost critically acclaimed movies, but it’s the60th movie that Will Smith did that made agazillion dollars. Okay that’s anexaggeration, BUT it’s still a good movie.Although it was slightly overrated, it’s

interesting when people come up with anew premise for a superhero. Smith is funnyat times, but be sure to remember that thismovie isn’t a comedy. It’s a superhero/actionmovie with some funny parts. Don’t forgetit. It’s just a nice movie because we all knowthat Smith doesn’t have to work anymorebut he still does. After I am Legend, BadBoys 1 and 2, MIB 1 and 2, Wild Wild West, and Independence Day, all of which grossedmore than $100 million the first weekend,Will Smith still has it.

Drama department already on its feet

Loveland’s drama department is wastingno time this year. Though school has barelybegun, the first production is already on itsfeet. Starting off the year is the musicalBye, Bye Birdie. Through many excitingscenes, songs, and dances, Bye, Bye Birdieportrays the story of a teenage girl, KimMacAfee, who wins a contest. Her prize?A kiss fromheartthrob singingsensation ConradBirdie before heleaves for war. Incharge of gettingthis play up andrunning is CarolHadley. Thoughthis is Mrs.Hadley’s first yeardirecting at LHS,she is certainly notnew when it comesto the theatre. I hada chance to talkwith thisaccomplished director about the upcomingproduction. Q: What drew you to the position ofdirecting at Loveland? A: I wanted to become the drama directorat Loveland High School for multiplereasons. First and foremost, I did it for thestudents. There is so much talent atLoveland High School, and I wanted tomake sure they didn’t go by the wayside.Secondly, I love the theater and I loveworking with children by helping themdevelop their talents and bringing out thebest in them. Q: Have you acted or directed in anyplays before? A: I have been in plays and musicalssince I was 6 years old. While in middleschool and high school, I was on stage asmuch as time permitted, playing lead rolesas well as supporting roles. Being on stagewas my life during school. It wasn’t untilafter high school that I got my first taste ofdirecting. While in college, I was hired by a

church to direct and choreograph theirvacation bible school musical Noah and theLost Ark. It was a thrill for me, and I gotsuch a rush from it that I knew I was hookedon directing. Throughout the years I haveenjoyed directing as well as performing inplays and musicals across the Tri-state. Q: What do you like most, acting ordirecting? A: When asked which one do I like most,

I really mean it whenI say, I like bothequally the same.Because they canbe vastly differentfrom each other, I geta different sense ofaccompl i shmen twhether acting onstage or directing.Nerves come intoplay more when ons t a g ethough, without adoubt. Q: Why did you

choose Bye Bye Birdie? A: I chose Bye Bye Birdie as our fallmusical for several reasons. It is a greatshow which is a lot of fun to participate inand a wonderful show for the whole familyto see. Also, it has a large cast which givesopportunities to many students. Lastly, Iwanted to pick a show that the public atlarge would recognize and want tosee, giving our students in the cast a chanceat a full house every night.

Q: What can students look forward toseeing? A: Students can look forward to seeing afun show. We have an awesome cast filledwith very talented students. Come andsupport some of your friends, andour leads, such as Steffen Whorton, LaurenMartinez, Beau Cybulski, Ashley Warner,Nathan Robbins, Josh Williams, HaleyMueller, Megan Leever, Lindsey Stalnaker,Suzanne Culbertson, Anna Dolan, BrandonHuber, Haley Nutter, Kees Henskens, andmany, many more. The show will havevery funny scenes with outstanding actingand singing, based on our final casting thispast Friday. Q: Who should audition for the upcomingshows? A: I would encourage anyone who isinterested in being in a play or musical tocome and audition. Whether you are a noviceat being in shows or not, it is always goodpractice to audition. You find out more aboutyourself when you are made to come out ofyour comfort zone. I always say “If you don’tat least try, how will you ever know if youwould have made it?” The auditions for thedrama will be Feb. 2, 3, and 4 and theperformances will be March 26, 27, and 28.Hope to see you there. Q: Is there any way that students couldhelp out with Bye Bye Birdie or other plays ifthey don’t want to be on stage? A: If being on stage is not your thing, thedrama department is always looking forpeople to help in other capacities. If you arethat person and you have time to volunteer, please contact me, Carol Hadley, [email protected] certainly sounds like Loveland’s Bye ByeBirdie will be a show that you don’t want tomiss. So, on Nov. 13th, 14th, and 15th, lets fillthe auditorium for the first play of the year.

Q: Tell us a little bit about the play. Whatis Bye Bye Birdie about? A: Agent and songwriter Albert Petersonfinds himself in trouble when hip-thrustingrock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie, fromAllentown, PA, is drafted into the Army.Albert’s secretary and sweetheart, RoseAlvarez, comes up with a last-ditch publicitystunt to have Conrad Birdie record andpremiere a song before he is sent overseas.

The influence of the internet andespecially YouTube has changed ordinarypeople around the world, and now, it iseven changing the music business. Therock band Journey is one of the mostknown bands throughout the world. It haspreformed in thousands of places and hassung many classics including “Don’t Stop

Believing,” “Faithfully,” and“Separate Ways.” Journeyrecently broke up in June of 2007when Jeff Scott Soto, the band’slead singer, left. So the rock bandturned to YouTube for help infinding a new member to start iton another golden streak. Whatthey found was truly spectacular.A Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda, had created several videos of hisband performing Journey classicssuch as the songs listed above.Pineda’s voice was eerily similarto Steve Perry, the Journeyvocalist who led the band in itsmost popular period in the 1980’s.Six weeks after the band looked atPineda, he was flown out to theUnited States for an audition tobe a member of Journey. Not onlydid the band like what they heard, but also what they saw. Pinedawas announced as the new leadsinger of Journey in December. Get your rock face on and preparefor Three Days Grace. This relativelynew band is on its way to becomingone of the most popularbands in America. It hasreleased three albums sofar: Three Days Grace,One-X and Live at thePalace. Its first album,Three Days Grace, divesdeep into each of theband members’ personalstruggles with addictionsand their hardshipsduring their lives at home.In One-X, the bandswitches from discussingits own problems to a broader topic ofdiscussing everyone’s problems. Intheir song Never Too Late a depressingstory is told, but it ends with a sliver ofhope remaining, which is what the band

was going for. In an interview with anEntertainment Weekly reporter regardingOne-X, the band’s lead singer Adam Gontiersaid, “From front to back, the lyrics of One-X explore the different problems I had. I felt

singled out. I wanted to benormal and I just wantedsomeone, anyone to helpme. At a point, I finally cameto realize that no matterhow singled out I felt, therewere so many others outthere like me. I realized,‘Okay, I’m not alone’.”Three Days Grace exploresmany types of sounds in itsalbums. They have a rock, metal, and alternative stylein all of their songs.

Despite the dark, almost emo appearance ofthis band, this is one of those groups youdefinitely have to check out. And that’swhy Three Days Grace is that band youought to know.

Chipotle vs. Moe’s

Although both restaurants specialize in Mexican cuisine, The Roar has chosen Chipotle over Moe’s.When we visited Moe’s we first noticed the cookies, which do not go with the theme of the restaurant…ittotally threw off the vibe of the restaurant. Also the chips, salsa and guacamole were not up to par withChipotle’s mouthwatering ingredients. It is a pretty clear choice: Chipotle over Moe’s any day! Chipotlewins the final tally 18 to 16.
