10th Annual Diversity and Family Friendly Awards and Conference The 10th Annual Diversity and Family Friendly Awards and Conference was held on October 1st, 2009 at the Centre in Evans-ville, Indiana. Over 100 people attended this year’s event which was headlined by Dr. Gregory Howard Williams (“Life on the Color Line”). Dr. Williams also spoke at Bosse High School the evening of the event for the “One Book, One Community” pro-gram through the EVPL. A total of 12 awards were given out in the following areas: Diversity, Family Friendly Health and Bene-fits and Family Friendly Work Environment and Scheduling. Two individual awards were given which included the Mayor’s Award given to Frank Kanowski, SPHR and the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Diversity Month Scholarship which was given to UE student, Tera Walters. Other presentations for this year’s event included Dr. Mary-Frances Winters, “The Business Case: Why Diversity & Inclusion are good for Business,” Gary May, MSSW, “Inspirational, But Not Employable,” and Patrice Blanchard, “AARP—Aging Workforce.”

Mike Murphy “Takes the Cake” ongratulations to Mike Murphy for winning the 2009 Indiana State Conference Volunteer of the Year award. The Volun-teer of the Year award recognizes outstanding leadership,
motivation and organizational skills to the development of the Indi-ana State Council, the local chapter, or other SHRM programs. Mi-chael is a volunteer at both the local and national level of SHRM. He currently serves on SHRM’s Special Expertise Panel on Total Re-wards/Compensation and Benefits as well as the National Roundta-ble on Retirement. He also serves as a Mentor in the SHRM Mentor program. He is the former President of the Evansville Area Human Resource Association, as well as the Education Director for the Indi-ana State Council of SHRM. He has served as a volunteer for several years at the state conference as well as the WorldatWork’s national conference. He also serves as an Expert Reviewer for Worldat-Work’s Workspan magazine as well as the quarterly WorldatWork Journal publication. He serves on the Steering Committee for the Tri-State Benefits and Compensation Association and is an on-line instructor for the Human Resources and Compensation Manage-ment Course for the International Foundation of Employee Bene-fits. In addition to these activities, he is also actively involved in numerous community organizations. And in his spare time, he is the Director, Compensation and Benefits for Shoe Carnival. Girls in Bloom 2010 Girls in Bloom provides opportunities for fifth through eighth grade girls and their parents or guardians to participate in social activities such as art, writing, music and dance, and to seek ways to stimulate dialogue in our community about the challenges adolescent girls face. The EHRA has been invited to participate in the February 2010 event. Volun-teers from the EHRA are needed to create and present an interactive program. 2009 HR Professional of the Year The Evansville-Area Human Resource Association is now seeking candidates to repre-sent “the best” in the HR man-agement profession. They are individuals who serve as role models for the profession and who are leaders. These indi-viduals set the standards for others and the profession and apply their professional exper-tise outside the organization as well.
