Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s festival time! Didn’t we just complete one? The plan-ning never stops.

Man, did we have fun with the Rivals Radio guys when they were here broad-casting from Destin! It was a great two and a half days. It brought great publicity for the Destin area. It helped when the fi rst six or eight callers on Thursday morning all expressed their jeal-ousy that Rivals Radio was in town, while the callers wished they were here. On Friday, after discussing on air the fi shing trip with Capt. Kelly Windes (thanks, Kelly!), we received a call in our offi ce from Atlanta asking for Capt. Windes phone number be-cause they wanted to go fi sh-ing with him. Also on Friday, a caller from Anchorage, Alaska – that’s right, Anchor-age – said he was planning a vacation in the Bahamas, but because of all the Rivals guys were saying about Destin, he

had changed his mind and is coming here instead. Thank you to Mark Bellinger at the Okaloosa TDC, ResortQuest, Fisherman’s Wharf, Indian Bayou, and CenturyLink for your efforts in making the Ri-vals broadcast a reality. Also, thanks to Brian, Shaun, Bill, and Carey for taking a lot of time from your schedules to help with the entertaining.

College football is in full swing – hooray! I didn’t realize how much I missed it until it kicked off. The SEC STILL RULES!

Sen. Don Gaetz did a great job at our Chamber breakfast of explaining some of the amendments on the November ballot. The only amendment we offi cially have a position on is Amendment 4. The Chamber Board encourages you to vote NO ON 4! It will cripple our al-ready devastated economy. If it passes, there will be traffi c jams on I-95, I-75, and I-10 with businesses moving out of this state. Again, VOTE NO ON 4!

He also explained the need for passage of Amendment 8, the class size amendment adjust-ment. While the Chamber does not have a position on this amendment, it’s a good one. It gives some fl exibility

to the class size amendment passed a few years ago. It will base class sizes on averages for the school, rather than exact number of students. With the billions of dollars already spent in this state by school districts moving to compliance with the class size amendment, we don’t need to add any more expense to already strapped school dis-trict budgets. The teacher’s union opposes Amendment 8, which in my mind makes it worth passing. That’s MY opinion, not the Chamber’s, as our Board has not taken a position on Amendment 8.

Also at our September breakfast, Sen. Gaetz and Reps. Marti Coley and Matt Gaetz said they would not vote for drilling in Florida waters. We hope they never do. We’ll be watching closely, and we’ll keep you posted.

Remember, there is a difference in Florida waters and federal waters. Florida waters only go out nine miles, where the federal waters begin. We need to watch the federal government closely to see if they attempt to lift the current 125 mile ban on drilling off of Florida’s coast. And we’ll need to watch to see if anyone at the state level lobbies the federal govern-ment to lift that ban. The last

I saw and read, Marco Rubio supports offshore drilling. Watch it closely.

Should I be concerned that Harper calls Alex “Buddy” all the time, and when you ask her what his name is she replies with “I don’t know?”

The economic sum-mit, held on Sept. 9, went well. Thank you to the City of Destin, Greg Kisela, and especially Councilor Larry Hines, whose idea it was to hold the summit. There were around 40 people in attendance in eight different work groups. I look forward to working with the groups identifi ed during the session as playing key roles in shap-ing Destin’s future. I really hope this moves forward with great success. Thanks to the Chamber’s Executive Committee for its efforts as facilitators of the summit.

Well, here we go. We’re staring the festival dead in the eyes. I hope we survive! By the time you read this, you’ll know whether we did or not.

With wishes for contin-ued success, and until next month,

With the cooling of the air seems a warming of our local economy. An interesting bit of trivia regards economic recoveries. It seems that most people don’t realize or recognize an economic recovery – or fi nancial healing – until well into the recovery. As a 20-year veteran of the fi nancial services industry, I agree. Is it

possible that our local economy has begun to recover, despite the fi nancial diffi culties so many of our members still face? I believe so, and here’s why….

We have so many things happening in our area right now, with so much activity, that we are generating business. Between the Seafood Festival, the City’s Harbor Boardwalk project, the recent concerts on the beach, the joint chamber events, and Destin Economic Summit (which was entirely focused on generating new business for our area within 12 to 18 months), we are making prog-ress. Just take a look at what our CEO, Shane Moody, writes about on the opposite page. The recent social and economic activity that your Chamber has engaged in over the last couple of months is fren-zied. The physical presence of the

nationally aired ‘Rivals Radio’ out of Destin has already generated direct, tangible new business to our area.

Economic recoveries are often tied to consumer confi dence. In fact, consumer confi dence is often considered an economic leading in-dicator. Of course, we don’t have polls for consumer confi dence for our immediate Chamber area. However, many Chamber mem-bers mention to me that things are not as bad as they were and others stated that things are going well! Where are you in your business? Are things better - perhaps slightly?

Do you notice that some of your friends or peers are seeing an increase in their business? If the answer is at least a lukewarm ‘yes,’ then we just might be headed in the right direction.

Unfortunately, where consumer confi dence tends to be a lead-ing economic indicator, personal fi nancial healing tends to be a lag-ging indicator. So, while business for some might be ticking slightly upward, we may not see a return of the ‘roaring 90s’ anytime soon. But, we are making progress – hang in there.

What can you do? Keep an eye on what your Chamber is offer-ing for activities. We retain strong numbers for new member applica-tions, and I believe that is due to the networking opportunities and the directed, community-oriented, economic initiatives and political interactions. We are here to serve you – take advantage of it, it just may help your business!

Member Spotlight Marie BabinSouthern Resorts Vacation Rentals

Our October Member in the Spotlight is Marie Babin, chief operations officer for Southern Re-sorts Vacation Rentals.

Celebrating 15 years, Southern Resorts repre-

sents almost 700 vaca-tion properties along the beaches of Northwest Florida, including Destin, where it began. The com-pany now offers South-ern Perks, a free amenity

and activity program for guests.

“We are looking to continue to grow in this region and are accept-ing new properties,” said Babin. “We are a locally

owned business with roots here in Destin and offer the most competitive rates.”

For more information, please visit www.SouthernResorts.com.

“We are looking to continue to grow in this region”

90% of the population will need donated blood in their lifetime.

Less than 10% of the population actually donates blood.

It is a fact that people do not think about donating blood until they themselves are in need of it. Donating blood is easy, painless, free, and rewarding. Every pint of blood that is donated by you can help save the lives of three patients in our local community hospitals.

Northwest Florida Blood Services is your not-for-prof-it, community-based blood center, serving the needs of patients at every hospital in the Pensacola, Okaloosa, and Panama City areas, where one out of every seven patients will require blood transfusions. This blood can only come from volunteer donors, as there are no artifi -cial substitutes.

As I said before, donating blood is easy, painless, free,

and rewarding. All you need to donate blood is a picture ID. The process of donating blood takes about 30 minutes from start to fi nish. You have to fi ll out a quick ques-tionnaire and get a medical screening, which consists of a blood pressure check, temperature, pulse, and iron check. Once you fi nish with that, you head to a comfort-able donor bed and get ready to donate.

Once you are in the donor bed, you just relax, talk with your phlebotomist, the person drawing the blood, and have a good time. It takes about 10 minutes once the needle is in, and it doesn’t hurt a bit. After you are done, you get a delicious snack, some juice, and a free t-shirt.

After that, we ask that you relax for the rest of the day and feel inspired because you just helped to save three people’s lives!

Now you may be won-dering, how could my blood

save three people? Well your blood is made up of three different components: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

The red blood cells are used to carry oxygen to all your cells. They are given to surgery and trauma patients and those with blood dis-orders, such as anemia and sickle cell disease.

The platelets control blood clotting in your body and must be transfused within fi ve days of dona-tion. They are used to stop bleeding associated with cancer and surgery.

The plasma carries clot-ting factors and nutrients. It is given to trauma patients, burn victims, organ trans-plant recipients, newborns, and patients with clotting disorders.

Now that you know what your blood donation can do and who it can go to, we ask that you please come out and donate at your nearest blood

drive, or visit our center at 405 Racetrack Rd., in Fort Walton Beach.. Visit our website at www.fbsblood.org or call (850) 862-4384 to fi nd out where the blood drives are in your area.

For businesses, if you would like to help us out and donate something for us to give to our fabulous blood donors, please con-tact Jeanette Carder at (850) 598-0236. We would love to partner with you!

Thank you for being a lifesaver.

Five years ago, the Destin Area Chamber of Com-merce launched the Destin Area Summer Photo Contest to give area visitors and residents a forum to share their favorite Destin memories.

“So many people were already sharing their photos and stories with the Chamber,” said Vice President of Communications Elizabeth Spies. “We wanted a way to showcase those photos, which together tell a wonderful story of family traditions, children discovering the beach for the fi rst time, the activity along the harbor, and the natural beauty of the area.”

During the contest, which ran from Aug. 16 to Sept. 3, 45 photos were entered. One winner was chosen in each of three contest categories – Family, Beach, and Harbor/Bay – along with an overall winner. The winners are as follows:

• Overall Winner: Taryn Sciambra of Picayune, MS• Family Category Winner: Shira Gottier of Destin, FL• Beach Category Winner: Laura Martin• Harbor Category Winner: Eric Gan of Niceville, FL

All contest winners will receive a Destin prize package, which includes a print by watercolor artist Judy Shilling-burg, and will also be featured prominently in the Cham-ber’s 2011 membership directory. Winners were chosen by the Chamber’s Board of Directors and staff. The winners, along with all photos submitted, may be viewed at www.DestinChamber.com.

Family Photo Overall Winner in Destin Area Summer Photo Contest

Overall Winner: “This photo was taken on the last day of our annual Destin vacation outside of Pompano Joe’s. We had just fi nished eating dinner, and the kids wanted to go play on the beach and in the Gulf. The sun was setting, it was a beautiful evening.” Submitted by Taryn Sciambra of Picayune, MS

Family Category Winner: “I took this photo the week-end before the oil was reported to begin impacting our beautiful beaches. Unsure of what the future held, I wanted to capture a few photos of our shores. My daughter stands looking out, watching the approaching storm clouds as we wait and hope.” Submitted by Shira Gottier of Destin, FL

Harbor Category Winner: “A typical summer scene on Destin harbor taken from Norriego Point.” Submitted by Eric Gan of Niceville, FL

Beach Category Winner: “Double rainbow picture taken the evening of Aug. 21, on Holiday Isle.” Submitted by Laura Martin
