God’s reconcil ing love.

“My beloved had a vine-yard on a very fertile hill. 2He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.” (Isaiah 5:1-2 NRS)

One of our texts for use in worship this week is from the book of Isaiah, chap-ter 5. In it the prophet talks about a garden. He picked out the per-fect space for this gar-den. The text says he chose “a very fertile hill” on which to plant it. Ap-parently he really put some time into his gar-den. This summer, all that changed. I planted a garden with the help of a friend. Actually, I think he really did all the work. He knew what he was doing. I bought the seed and the seedlings. He had the equipment to make things happen. Unlike the farmer in the passage of Isaiah, I did not plant any grapes and I am thankful not to have raised wild grapes. In the process, I learned a lot of things. I learned that sweet corn is ready when it is ready. learned that the leaves of a number of plants make my wife’s skin itchy and cov-ered with a rash. I learned that red potatoes grow pretty well here in North Da-kota. I learned that late in the season one needs to step on the green part of the onion that sticks out above the ground to pro-mote a nice large bulb. I learned that the radishes, I so love, at the supermarket are very, very mild com-pared to the ones that grew in my garden. Those that grew in my garden were able, seemingly effort-lessly, to bring tears to my eyes in one or two bites. Planting, caring for, and then harvesting from my garden was a lot of fun for me. Frankly, I think our en-tire family enjoyed it! But I was not expecting the learning curve to be as high as it was and I had no clue how much work it would re-quire! It’s a lot like ministry. I sus-

pect that is exactly why there are so many refer-ences and allusions to planting and sowing in the Bible. Gardening is hard work and we learn by ex-perience. We make plenty of mistakes along the way and yet, God is truly respon-sible in the end. Like the farmers, we can’t control many of the most important variables, like the weather. We learn to do our own parts and then we get out of the way and let God run with things. So what will be planting at St. Olaf in this coming year? I think we live in a fertile place, so how will we tend to the garden? Are we ready to dig in and roll up our sleeves? What kind of vision do we have for the future here at our church in Devils Lake. Please stop by my office and tell me what you have in mind. I am al-ways available to listen.

Peace, Pastor Jeff

The Stewardship Program for St. Olaf started on Septem-ber 25th and is entitled "Make It Simple". The Make It Simple theme will be our focus for worship through November 6th. There will be more arti-cles such as this one in SPIRE, bulletins, letters to each home, temple talks and sermons based on this stewardship theme. These opportunities will sup-port the information needed for the choices we make in our daily lives. When we look at the word stewardship we find it comes from Greek roots and means "to hold in trust". It stems from the un-derstanding of stewards in the gospel that were land-owners, house owners, or rich men who entrusted their property to stewards. Stewards' duties were to keep producing fruit, gen-erate a return on invest-ment, or tend to the up-keep of the house. Built into this concept is the sense that God is the owner of all, and we are simply entrusted with money, spiri-tual gifts, or the numbered days of our lives to invest what we have on behalf of

the kingdom of God. Paul talks in 1 Corinthians 3 about God reviewing the books of our lives and rewarding us for those actions that

were ordained by God for us to accomplish in this world. At the center of this con-cept, for followers of Jesus, is the awareness that we are all accountable for the great gifts we have been given. The wrong question to ask is: how much will I give, do, or dedicate to God? The right question is: how will I steward my gifts of time, treasure, and talent in the ways that God is ask-ing me to invest in God's work in the world? The Stewardship Committee

The first chapter of the Gospel of Mark Bible study was held for WELCA on Thursday, Sept. 11th. Rev Keith Zeh of the Eastern North Dakota Synod staff was here on August 15. St Olaf is in the process of becoming a host for future synod events. It would be exciting to have events come to the Devils Lake Conference rather than always having to travel. Rev Zeh was impressed with our facility and the possibilities. We may be able to in-crease attendance/participation from churches in this area. I met with the worship/music committee on Mon-day, Aug. 15th and had a conference call with Tricorne Audio. We discussed

possibilities and options related to up-grading the churches sound system and making changes to the sanctu-ary to be able to use screens and pro-jectors. Estimates have arrived and will be discussed further by the worship and music committee. Dan, Nica and I took Sarah back to Luther College on August 24th and returned late on the 28th. It was great to spend a few days in Iowa and connect with a few friends once again. On a sad note, one of those friends died unexpect-edly this past weekend. Christian Education Board: Present: Cara Mitzel, Brenda Langerud, Lori Stubbe, Anne Rasmusson and Kory Boehmer. Absent: Eric Berg and Tammy Riggin. Guest: None. Sunday School: Thank you to Brenda for orga-nizing the supply room. Cara will get supplies & curriculum to each room. Board ok’d $34.88 to Brenda for pur-chase of a table for the supply room. Rally Sunday is September 18th. Volun-teers are organized for registration. Suggested donation is $15.00 per child with a $45.00 maximum per family. Sunday teachers are in place. The Board is still deciding whether or not to combine 5-8 grades for better teacher time. Music will be provided by Sun-day School students @ 11:00 service on Rally Sunday. Oct 9 and Nov 13 will have Sunday School Choirs sing with Cherub Choir one day and Adult Choir the other. Wednesday School – no teachers available – the Board plans to contact families to see if they would like it later in the day. If not, we will not have Wednesday School. Dates to remember: Sept 21st: orienta-tion for 7-9 grade confirmation, Sept

The lefse will be served at the Lutefisk Sup-per in October. This was Bud & Kay’s last meeting with us, as they are mov-ing to Bismarck. We thank them for their service on our committee over the past 4 years. They will be missed. Our committee is in need of 2-4 new members. Our next meeting will be October 9th between services at 9:45. Meeting adjourned. Lay Ministry: Present: Florene Rogne, Deloris Johanson and Ray Sletteland. Communion was taken to two people from the church and visits were made at the nursing home. Men’s Club: Lute-fisk supper will be Sunday, Oct. 16th. 400 pounds of lutefisk have been or-dered. This is 25 pounds less than last year. WELCA: Miriam Circle met Au-gust 10th and assembled 21 hospice kits and 24 newborn kits for Global Health

Ministries. They have also contributed hand rolled bandages and medical devices. Many members attended the Ladies Night Out at Peace Lu-theran Church. Some of the quilters went to Red Willow Bible Camp for the appreciation supper and brought items for the auction. Kathy Benson, North Dakota Community Support Co-ordinator with the Army One Source, spoke at the September meeting. Quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief were shown and the fall rummage sale, scheduled for October 8th was discussed. Report submitted by Florene Rogne. Outreach & Evangelism: The board met at the Senior Center at 4:30 pm September 13th. Members present: Loretta Bloomquist, LaMae Bergan and Marlene Young. Old Business: We con-tinued discussion of our duties – under #1 “promote climate of Evangelism” it was decided to see about publishing articles in parish press and website by Pastor Evelyn Carlson addressing this topic, if the church council has no ob-jections. #5 – Re: “new members” – reviewed list of persons who have indi-cated interest in becoming members of St Olaf. New member’s orientation is set for October but no definite date set. We will host a “get acquainted evening” or “Sunday pot luck” for the whole congregation, time and scope still to be decided. We need further direction from Pastor Jeff. New Busi-ness: Joe Hoiberg would like to meet with us but our usual time does not work for him. It was decided to have our October meeting at 7:00pm at St Olaf. Loretta will contact Joe and in-vite him to this meeting. We will be sponsoring the United Blood Drive in November.
