Meet Our Veterinary Staff Dog & Cat Pet First-Aid & CPR Class Available!

Dr. Amy Raines, Chief of Staff Celebrating one year as the Humane Society

of San Bernardino Valley’s Veterinary Clinic Chief of Staff, Dr. Amy Raines remembers how impressed she was with the facility when she first came on board as a relief veterinarian. “It was a great way to really be introduced to the facility. I was so impressed with the recov-ery area! Each kennel had a blanket and a per-son standing watching the pets as they woke up from surgery. It was immaculate too!”

A year later, Dr. Raines still loves the same things that first drew her to working here. She adds that she loves getting to know and working with the staff as well. “Thirty plus people, and we are all here for the right reasons,” she says.

Dr. Raines would like to remind members of the community that low cost does not mean low quality, especially here at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley!

Dr. Brandon BorenOur newest Veterinarian, Dr. Brandon

Boren, is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. During college he worked as a Veterinary Techni-cian at Banfield Pet Hospital. Following college he participated in a small animal rotating internship at the VCA Animal Re-ferral and Emergency Center of Arizona. Dr. Boren is no stranger to the HSSBV, as

Dr. Amy Raines was once his teacher at Western University! “I like that we are able to provide medical care and service to people at an affordable price and still be able to practice good medicine,” he says. In his spare time, Dr. Boren enjoys cooking and scuba diving. He is

also an avid traveler who has visited Australia, Kenya, Europe, and Jamaica.

Dr. James KroneDr. James Krone has been our vet-

erinarian for over ten years first work-ing on the Spay Mobile and then in our Veterinary Clinic. A resident of Las Vegas, Dr. Krone performs sur-gery here two days a week.

In 1996 Dr. Krone retired and sold his own practice after thirty-eight years. “I made a mistake, I retired too soon and I got bored,” he says. When he decided to come back to work, he

sent his resume to us and as he says, “the rest is history!”Dr. Krone’s father was a veterinarian. He credits his own inspira-

tion for becoming a veterinarian from the years he spent watching and working with his father. He has one dog, Gilda, and one cat, Cat Krone at home. When asked if there was a message he would like to give to the community, Dr. Krone says, “Have your pets spayed and neutered. Our purpose is to stop the over supply of unwanted pets. Having them spayed and neutered is a better alternative to eu-thanasia.”

In 2008 our Humane Officers received a call from Mr. Albert Himden of San Bernardino requesting assistance with dog food for his four dogs. When the Officers went to his home they found a man who loved his dogs and treated them as if they were his own children. Mr. Himden had terminal cancer and was having difficulties getting out of the house. They began frequent visits to the residence to assist Mr. Him-den and his animals.

As Mr. Himden’s health deteriorated over the next two years, our Officers, along with his neighbors, the Monroe family, continued to assist him with the care of his beloved pets. In September of 2010, Mr. Himden was put in hospice care. Sadly, one of the dogs, Rosie, became very ill and Mr. Himden did not want her to suffer. He wanted to be with Rosie for her last minutes and requested his regular veterinar-ian to put her to sleep. Between the Monroe family and the Humane Officers, Mr. Himden was able to be with Rosie at the end. The Monroe family helped Mr. Himden to the veteri-

narian’s office, while the Humane Officers transported Rosie one last time.

A few months later, a second dog, Nightmare, became ill. Since Mr. Himden was in such poor health, our Officers again provided assistance.

Mr. Himden passed away on April 27, 2011 from his six-teen year battle with cancer. Left behind were his two com-panions, Schub and Sinbad. With the help of Officer Ash-baker and Officer Padilla, Schub and Sinbad were adopted into a loving home. Their new owner was notified that Mr. Himden had set up a trust fund to ensure his animals were cared for when he was gone. He truly loved his “children.”

Schub and Sinbad visit the HSSBV Veterinary Clinic often! When they are here, they stop by to see their good friends, Officer Ashbaker and Officer Padilla. They are a constant reminder of the deep love between a pet and their family.

Humane Officers Receive A Visit From Some Old Friends

Dayleen Dutcher Helps HSSBV Raise Funds & Educate! After attending Critter Camp this year, Dayleen Dutcher approached our hu-

mane education teacher, Lynn Hildebrand, asking how she could help. After dis-cussing the program, Dayleen decided she would like to help raise funds to purchase What Is Animal Cruelty and What Can You Do About It? books for the Humane Education Program. The book introduces compassionate treatment of animals to children. Each fifth and sixth grade student who participates in our humane educa-tion program receives their own copy.

Once Dayleen had her materials and was ready to get started she ran in to what she originally felt was an issue. Rather than donate, several members of the com-munity she spoke to became interested in purchasing the book for their own chil-dren! We were thrilled to hear that there was additional interest in the book and gave Dayleen a stack to keep with her during her efforts.

Dayleen ended up selling 9 books and raising a total of $93 for the Humane So-ciety to continue to purchase these books for school children.

We would like to thank Dayleen for her successful efforts in not only raising money to help purchase these books, but for also helping us pass on our message of compassion to animals to youth!

Casino Night & Dog House Auction A Success!

On August 27, 2011 friends of the Humane Society came together for a night of fun and gambling at our first Viva Las Vegas… Ante Up for Animals Casino Night & Dog House Auction. Over $16,000 was raised to help sup-port the Humane Society programs and services!

Guests enjoyed a night of great music, games, prizes, food, and drinks, while eagerly waiting to bid on seven uniquely decorated dog houses. As the evening ended, and chips were cashed in for raffle tickets, our gamblers patiently waited to hear their name called as a winner of one of the numerous raffle prizes. The event was such a success it has been requested by attendess to be an annual event!

Both doctors are licensed clinical psycholo-gists who also specialize in providing animal-assisted therapy to the patients they serve in their private practice, Future Generations- Di-agnostic, Treatment and Evaluation Center, in nearby Redlands. The class has been offered free of charge as a community service collabo-ration between the Humane Society and Future Generations Diagnostic, Treatment & Evalua-tion Center.

“We thought it a natural extension of what we do and who we are,” says Dr. Brian Chich-ester. “As people, we’re animal lovers and al-ways have been. As professionals, we’re doc-tors who treat a variety of conditions, including complicated grief and loss. We’re the only therapists in our area we know of who also pro-vide a scientific approach to utilizing animal-assisted therapy in our private practice.”

“We realized a need for this class existed as we treated patients struggling to cope with their own losses, but sadly very few pet-loss resources existed in our community,” Dr. Chichester says. “People can underestimate the impact of losing a beloved pet. Sometimes the loss of a companion animal triggers a flare-up of a mood disturbance that was lurking under the surface or exacerbates the poignancy of other losses, such as the loss of human rela-tions.”

Shortly after opening their own practice in 2008, the Chichesters approached the Humane Society about designing and presenting the course curriculum based on sound psychologi-

cal science pertaining to the treatment of com-plicated grief and supportive counseling for bereavement. Because they used animal-assist-ed therapy as part of their milieu of treatment options, the psychologists uniquely understand the animal-human bond and the intricacies of these relationships. The only nearby resources at that time for pet loss were in major metro-politan areas like Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Most of these resources also charged fees, sometimes hefty fees. The doc-tors felt the Inland Empire should have options that were free of charge to help de-stigmatize pet loss and provide the much needed emotion-al supports.

“Many people have a hard time thinking that pet loss is a significant loss,” says Dr. Hsinya Chichester. “There’s still a stigma re-garding someone grieving the loss of a pet. Our class explains some of the psychological and sociological reasons for this, as well as builds the case, empirically, that pet loss isn’t such a silly topic after all. There’s no reason to feel ashamed because the loss of a pet hits harder than you expected.”

The Humane Society is proud of the part-nership with Drs. Hsinya & Brian Chichester to provide this important resource to the com-munity. For more information on Future Gen-erations- Diagnostic, Treat-ment and Evaluation Center and their new location and expansion, please visit www.futuregenerationsdtec.com.

HSSBV Along with Drs. Hsinya & Brian Chichester Celebrate 3rd Year of Pet Loss Classes

Recently, our Humane Educa-tion teacher, Lynn Hildebrand, part-nered with the second grade teach-

ers at Cypress Elementary School in Highland. The goal of this partnership is to introduce a year long unit involving making de-cisions which benefit people, animals, and the Earth.

The second graders listened to the story, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. Students concluded that a bucket filler is one who is kind to others. On the other hand, a bucket dipper is a bully that says and does mean things to oth-ers. They decided they could be bucket fillers by holding a door open for someone, sharing, smiling, raising their hand, using kind words, helping someone who has fallen, carrying a teach-er’s books, behaving on the playground, completing homework and praising people. Creating this list of bucket filling activities prepared them for their first bucket filling project to honor Mrs. Pearle Ludwig.

Mrs. Ludwig had made a generous donation of eighty note-books for the students to use as their kindness journal. The stu-dents surprised Mrs. Ludwig by presenting her with a Bucket-filling certificate of appreciation, read written work from their journals, and sang a specially prepared bucketfilling song!

Mrs. Ludwig joyfully replied to the Super Second Grade Buck-etfillers at Cypress Elementary School in a letter:

Dear Cypress Elementary School Second Graders, Mrs. Waitman, Ms. Beyer, Mrs. Poole, and Mrs. Esco-bar,

Thank you boys and girls for the beautiful song you sang and for reading some of your personal writings from your note books. As a guest at your school, I enjoyed every minute. You are really great Bucket Fillers!

I am proud of you as you look for ways to become a better individual, student, and citizen by show-ing respect, responsibility, and kindness.

I retired from teaching after being a teacher for many years. My visit with you brought back many wonderful memories!

Keep up your superb job being Bucket Fillers. You are making an outstanding difference!

Sincerely, Mrs. Ludwig

Retired Teacher

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Val-ley celebrates three years hosting its Pet Loss Be-reavement Class. The class, designed and taught by Drs. Brian and Hsinya Chichester, has been providing an invaluable resource to pet owners grieving the loss of a companion animal. The class started in October 2008 and continues to be offered monthly at The Humane Society. Classes are held on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Interested parties are asked to preregister by calling 909-386-1400 ext. 218.

Volunteer of the 2nd Quarter: Peter Murray

Isabel Hanes is a volunteer you can always count on! Since February 2011, she has been here without fail every Tues-day and Saturday as a Volunteer Recep-tionist in our Veterinary Clinic.

“I was looking for work, so I thought with my extra time I would volunteer at the the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley and do something I enjoyed,” she says. Isabel’s background in human resources helps her with her interaction with clients. “I really enjoy the contact with the public and their animals. It is

nice to meet people you share a common bond with; a love for animals. I enjoy the more challenging, crazy days. It’s what I am used to.”

Isabel has five pets of her own, three dogs and two guinea pigs! Isabel uses the services pro-vided at the HSSBV as well, “Dr. Raines neutered my guinea pig, here. She did a great job!” In her spare

time she enjoys reading, racquet ball, and learning new things.

We would like to thank Isabel for her hard work and dedication!

“I really enjoy the contact with the public

and their animals.”

Approaching his one year anniver-sary volunteering at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley,

Peter Murray says he is just happy to “make a small difference in the community.” Peter first became interested in volunteer work with the HSSBV when he attended our e-Waste Recycle Day. Seeing the en-tire event staffed primarily by volunteers, he asked about our volunteer program. He had been looking for somewhere to volun-

teer and loves animals, so it was a perfect fit. Peter has since been volunteering two days a week in Recovery, and managing many loads of laundry. Peter is a very dependable, humble volun-teer who works hard. Upon hearing that he was named Volunteer of the Quarter, he responded by saying “I just do laundry! There are so many other deserving volun-teers. The girls in recovery work so hard.” Each and every volunteer makes a differ-

ence here at the Humane Society. Without our volunteers, those working in reception, the call center, Saturday Shot Clinic, recov-ery, laundry, and special events, we would not be able to continue our mission of pre-venting cruelty and neglect to animals. We would like to thank Peter for his hard work and dedication!

Volunteer of the 3rd Quarter: Isabel Hanes

Our humane education teacher goes out every day to teach children in

the San Bernardino School District about the humane treatment of animals. We have also had the pleasure of having students come to us to learn more about the HSSBV and the services we provide. Recently, thirteen year old Ashley Ledbetter, did just that!

When Ashley was given an assign-ment to write an argumentative essay she approached her Mom and asked her if she could visit the Humane Society of San Ber-nardino Valley to learn more about our cru-elty program. She intended to write a paper about why animal abusers should be sent to jail. During her tour, Ashley met Lynn Hil-debrand, our humane educator and Humane Officer Frank Padilla. They spoke with her

about how many people first need to be educated on how to properly care for their animals. She also learned about several

of the cruelty investigation cases that ended in prosecution of animal abusers.

In her paper, Ashley wrote, “Cruelty to an animal is a crime. California law states that domestic pets have the right to food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Animals are living beings, just like we are. When you were born, your parents gave you love and care. Animals need just as much love and care as we do. Animals feel pain and suffer when they get hurt. They feel afraid when someone yells at them. They feel hot, cold, tired, hungry, and thirsty, just like we do. I believe that people who abuse animals intentionally should go to jail because it is against the law and because animals are in-nocent, living creatures, just like us. Be a voice for animals.”

We want to thank Ashley for taking the time to learn more about the laws protecting animals and what we do here at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley!
