Dear Westview Families, The 2013-2014 school year is off to a great beginning at Westview and I hope that the transition from summer to school was easy and smooth for you and your children. Our enrollment will top out at around 2450 and this is very close to where we were last year. What’s nice is that because of the passage of last spring’s Local Option Levy we have more teachers in our building than last year. Many staff that were moved during the summer shuffle of 2012 were able to return to Westview, too! Let’s just say there are a few more smiles around here! The District has some important changes this year regarding progress/grade reports and communication with parents/guardians. First, student Progress Reports will be mailed home at the six and twelve week mark of each semester. This timeline is new for all of us. In the past you received a 4 ½, 9, and 13½ week report before the final semester grade. The first Progress Report for each semester (October 11th and March 14 th ) simply does not allow most teachers the time to assess sufficient student work to appropriately determine a letter grade. In order for teachers to convey an appropriate message concerning a student’s progress six weeks into a semester, teachers are being encouraged to use the following marks: P = Passing P- = Progressing, but significant improvement is needed to earn a Passing mark at the end of the course F = Does not meet course targets Any student who receives an “F” on the October 11 th or March 14 th Progress Report will have five school days to improve the mark to a “P-“ or “P” to avoid becoming ineligible for athletics and activities sponsored by the Oregon Schools Athletics/Activities Association. Teachers also have the option of giving letter grades at the six-week reporting period. Remember, the “P” and “P-“ grading options exist for the six-week reporting period only. At twelve weeks, grades will be issued on the progress report. Yes, you do receive one less official report under this new schedule, but with the upgrades in ParentVue you can actually track student progress any time you would like during the semester. What is ParentVue? ParentVue is a web portal that allows parents and guardians access to realtime information related to their students. Parents/guardians can view their student's school calendars, attendance, schedules, grade book, report card, school information, emergency contacts and other information. An email explaining how to log into ParentVue was sent to all parents and guardians on Monday, September 23 rd . Hopefully this has reached you. If you did not receive this email, a letter was sent home on Wednesday, September 25 th explaining how to log into ParentVue. If you did not receive an email or letter by October 1st, you can call our main office number for help. I am sure there will be kinks to work out as we move to this new District wide system of communication and grade reporting. I am excited about the possibilities and hope that grades and student progress are no longer a mystery and surprise for you. Go Cats! The  Young  Entrepreneurs  Academy  (YEA!)  is  coming  to  Beaverton  High  Schools!

Start  as  a  student,  finish  as  the  CEO  of  your  own  company!

On  November  5th  2013,  high  school  students  in  Beaverton  will  have  the  unique  opportunity  to  start  and  launch  their  own  REAL  businesses  or  social  movements,  by  participating  in  the  Young  Entrepreneurs  Academy  (YEA!).      Over  the  course  of  the  year,  students  will  brainstorm  ideas,  write  business  plans,  pitch  their  plans  to  a  group  of  investors,  obtain  funding,  launch  their  enterprise  and  actually  sell  their  products  or  services.  Along  the  way  they  will  work  with  business  professionals,  build  a  brand  identity  and  create  a  website;  hear  from  local  business  owners;  and  participate  in  a  Trade  Show.        Applications  for  the  2014  YEA!  can  be  downloaded  from  www.beaverton.org/newsroom,    or  picked  up  at  the  high  schools.    Application  deadline  is  Oct  18th  or  when  the  cap  of  24  is  reached,  whatever  comes  first.        Classes  will  be  Tuesdays  4  –  7pm  at  the  Beaverton  High  School  Computer  Lab  beginning  November  5th,  2013  through  June  10th,  2014.            Questions,  please  contact  Evelyn  Orr  at  503  350  2004  or  [email protected].

District  Grading  and  Reporting  Update    Why  did  your  student  get  a  “B”  in  Algebra?    This  is  one  of  the  important  questions  raised  in  the  September  13th  editorial  by  The  Oregonian  Editorial  Board,  Mastery,  behavior  and  grades.    The  authors  addressed  the  issues  around  House  Bill  2220  and  the  requirement  to  establish  standards  and  “grade”  students  on  their  mastery  of  those  standards.    Oregon  House  Bill  2220  was  passed  in  2011  by  the  state  legislators  with  only  one  dissenting  vote  and  with  it  a  fundamental  change  in  how  we  report  student  learning.    In  order  to  make  this  bill  operational,  the  Beaverton  School  District  is  engaging  students,  parents,  teachers  and  others  to  do  this  well.        A  standards-‐based  system  is  built  around  one  simple  concept:  clear  standards  or  learning  targets  for  every  subject  at  every  grade  level.    Students,  parents,  and  teachers  all  deserve  a  clear  set  of  standards  that  will  be  taught  and  evaluated  in  each  class.    These  standards  should  be  consistent  and  aligned  throughout  the  system.    In  other  words,  the  writing  standards  in  a  Bethany  Elementary  School  4th  grade  classroom  should  be  the  same  as  in  a  Rock  Creek  Elementary  4th  grade  classroom.    The  Algebra  standards  in  a  Highland  Park  Middle  School  class  should  be  the  same  as  those  in  a  Stoller  Middle  School  Algebra  class.    The  Critical  Thinking–Analysis  standards  in  the  Sunset  High  School  sophomore  Social  Studies  course  should  be  the  same  as  in  the  Westview  High  School  sophomore  course.  Not  only  should  the  targets  be  consistent  they  must  be  aligned  to  ensure  students  are  prepared  for  the  targets  in  next  year’s  class.    The  controversy  starts  when  we  begin  talking  about  reporting  a  student’s  progress  or  level  of  mastery.    Even  if  we  all  agreed  upon  the  standards  and  the  levels  of  mastery  for  each,  we  have

yet  to  agree  upon  the  other  factors  that  should  be  considered  when  a  teacher  makes  his/her  judgment  and  places  a  grade  on  the  report  card.    Does  that  grade  tell  the  student  how  well  he/she  mastered  the  material,  how  well  he/she  followed  the  classroom  expectations,  or  some  combination  of  both?    If  the  answer  is  both,  how  much  did  each  play  into  the  decision?        A  standards-‐based  reporting  system  compels  the  teacher  to  provide  a  mark  limited  to  the  student’s  performance  on  a  single  standard,  allowing  them  to  be  very  accurate.    Limiting  judgment  and  a  mark  to  a  single  standard  also  means  the  teacher  must  provide  judgment  and  a  mark  for  each  of  the  standards  covered  in  the  course  to  provide  the  complete  picture  of  the  student’s  academic  learning.    In  addition,  a  standards-‐based  system  does  not  ignore  the  critical  non-‐academic  or  behavioral  learning  that  goes  on  in  every  classroom  from  kindergarten  through  graduation.    Work  completion,  timeliness,  ability  to  work  in  a  group,  etc.  are  all  critical  to  a  student’s  success,  and  we  have  developed  behavioral  standards  in  order  to  report  student  progress  in  these  areas  as  well.    The  bottom  line  for  reporting  student  progress  is  that  a  standards-‐based  system  accepts  that  we  must  have  multiple  marks  in  order  to  be  accurate,  honest  and  communicate  a  clear  picture  of  a  student’s  strengths  and  weaknesses  academically  and  behaviorally.    A  traditional  system  accepts  the  mystery  generated  when  multiple  truths  are  compressed  into  a  single  mark.    Our  high  schools  will  continue  to  convert  all  academic  information  into  a  single  mark,  a  letter  grade.    To  do  anything  different  would  be  risking  our  students’  post  high  school  options.    That  said,  let’s  not  fool  ourselves  into  believing  a  single  mark  at  the  end  of  a  course  can  ever  provide  us  with  the  critical  information  available  in  a  standards-‐based  system.    With  or  without  HB  2220,  the  Beaverton  School  District  and  Westview  High  School  owes  every  one  of  our  students  and  parents  a  clear  set  of  targets  being  taught  in  each  of  our  classes.    In  addition,  we  owe  every  student  and  every  parent  a  clear  picture  of  the  student’s  progress  in  each  of  these  targets.    This  is  a  significant  shift  in  the  way  schools  conduct  business,  and  it  won’t  happen  over  night.    We  welcome  your  comments  and  questions  as  we  develop  our  practice  and  policy  around  effective  grading  and  reporting.    We  also  thank  you  for  your  continued  support.    BSD Smartphone App now available for iOS and Android Stay connected with the Beaverton School District (BSD) anywhere and anytime! WESTVIEW THEATRE

CJ Hindman, Director Westview Drama presents Beverly Cleary's RAMONA QUIMBY. Unpredictable. Exasperating. Boisterous and independent. That's Ramona Quimby for you. Always aggravating her older sister, Beezus, constantly getting into trouble and sometimes "making a big, noisy fuss" when things don't go her way. The characters and the material, adapted by Obie Award-winning playwright Len Jenkin, are as "today" as the morning newspaper. The problems facing the Quimbys, a middle-class Oregon family, are problems common to most families. General Admission seating is $8. Thursday, October 17th at 4pm, Friday, October 18th at 7pm and Saturday, October 19th at 2pm and 7pm. Purchase tickets online at westviewtheatre.org

ATTENDANCE Parents (not students) can call the Attendance Office (503-259-5234) prior to 7:20 am to report an absence for that day. The Attendance Line is available 24/7. Students who leave school during the school day must have parent permission and must sign out in the Attendance Office prior to leaving campus. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence. Parents are notified of every unexcused absence through the auto dialer system. Phone calls will be made on the day of the absence beginning at 1:00 pm. After ten consecutive days of absence, excused or unexcused, the student will be withdrawn and a letter will be delivered to notify parents.

BUDGET REDUCTION DAY There will be one less budget reduction day. Negotiations have been completed, and the agreement restores April 28, 2014 as a staff and student day. This day was selected because it provides staff and community time to plan for a calendar change.

 Westview  Career  Education  Overview

Oregon  requires  all  students  to  earn  .5  credits  of  career  education  in  order  to  graduate.    Westview  does  not  offer  a  career  ed  class.    Rather,  each  grade  level  has  a  set  of  career  related  activities.    Some  of  these  activities  happen  in  classes,  while  some  are  completed  independently.    On  the  first  day  of  school,  students  visited  all  their  classes  for  a  course  overview  and  a  mini-‐lesson  on  a  variety  of  school  topics,  including  the  career  education  requirements.    As  many  of  career  ed  activities  are  completed  independently,  it  is  important  for  families  to  check  in  with  their  students  to  ensure  that  they  have  a  plan  to  address  them.    Students  earn  .125  credits  per  year.    Progress  toward  completing  these  activities  is  reported  on  the  2nd  semester  report  cards.    Please  review  the  following  career  related  highlights  list  with  your  children.    9th  Grade:  .125  Credits

Most  of  the  9th  and  10th  grade  activities  are  completed  in  specific  classes.    A  complete  list  with  details  is  available  in  the  StEPP  at  a  Glance  document  on  the  Westview  Career  Center  website  (http://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/westview).  If  a  student  is  not  enrolled  in  the  class  where  the  activity  occurs,  they  may  complete  it  in  the  Career  Center  during  a  study  hall,  lunch,  or  after  school.  Most  11th  and  12th  grade  activities  are  completed  independently.    Junior  and  senior  project  packets  were  passed  out  during  lunches  and  are  available  in  the  Career  Center.    Support  will  be  provided  in  the  form  of  class  meetings  and  workshops  through  out  the  year.    Questions  about  career  education?    Please  contact  Melanie  Schloff  in  the  Career  Center  ([email protected]).
